ATTENDANCE & GRADES: Elementary courses are designed to enhance and enrich learning. During the summer program, teachers check and monitor attendance daily. Although we would like students to attend everyday, attendance is not mandatory. In addition, students will not receive an official grade in any of the courses.

CODE OF CONDUCT: During the summer session, all students are expected to adhere to Chandler Unified School District’s Code of Conduct.

REGISTRATION CLOSES MONDAY, JUNE 4TH AT 2 PM School’s almost out and summer fun is in! Check out the full-day summer camp experiences we have in store for elementary and junior high students. In addition to our other camp sites, Kids Express will offer a special camp site to accommodate elementary students attending Summer Academy. These camp offerings are sure to be a cool hit with the kids and a great way to avoid summer heat and boredom!

Kids Express – Grade K-6: Campers will enjoy fun weekly themes, tons of awesome projects, games, sports, water play, arts and crafts, swimming, movies and some of their favorite field trips at select sites! Each child receives a camp T-shirt and string backpack. Get ready for a fun-packed summer your kids won’t soon forget!! See specific locations, dates, and rates below.

Tween Zone – Ages 10-14: Looking for something a little different for your older student? This action-packed camp experience offers field trips galore, plus awesome on-site activities to keep your child engaged. Days are filled with team and individual sports, music, air hockey, arcade basketball, foosball, video games, movies, dance, active games, cooking, craft projects, and more. See proposed location, dates, and rates below.

Chandler Academy for the Performing Arts, Paula Jones & Curt Landon, Co-Coordinators: This is a performance-based music camp for any students entering 6th through 12th grades with an interest in theater, playing an instrument, or singing. The camp will include participation in a large group (Advanced Band, Beginning Band, Advanced Orchestra, Beginning Orchestra, Steel Drum Band, Chorus, or Theater: The Art of Improvisation) and electives where students will have daily instruction in additional areas such as Jazz Band, Beginning Guitar, World Drumming, Sketch Comedy, and/or Music Theory/Composition. Included in the registration fee, this year's CAPA summer camp will include a camp t-shirt and a field trip to a performance of THE WIZ by the Valley Youth Theatre at the Herberger Theater. Students will enjoy instruction and a variety of fun activities led by our team of professional music educators known throughout the Easy Valley. Beginning Band: This is a class for students in grades 6th-12th, who have never played an instrument before, or those who played in 5th grade and fell behind and need extra help before entering advanced band in 6th grade. If the student plays a band instrument other than snare drum and can play two scales and can read all the notes in those scales in music, they should sign up for advanced band. If the student plays snare drum and knows matched stick grip and at least four rudiments, then they should sign up for advanced band. Students will be required to provide their own instruments. Trombones and baritones may be available to rent for a $50 fee. Beginning Band students must choose TWO electives from this list: beginning guitar, world drumming, or music theory. Unfortunately, Beginning Band students will not be able to sign up for sketch comedy.

Chorus: This ensemble is for students in grades 6th-12th. There is no audition and there are no required singing skills. If you have a mouth and enjoy singing, you’re in! Students will sing from a variety of choral literature, ranging from classical to pop. Chorus students must choose TWO electives from this list: beginning guitar, world drumming, sketch comedy or music theory.

Theatre: The Art of Improvisation: This program is designed to bring out the humor in all children through the fun and excitement of improvisational comedy. Kids will build confidence, focus to learn and think on their feet; develop teamwork and listening skills as well as performance and comedic abilities. The class will include an interactive performance between audience and students. Students do not need any previous experience to sign up for this class. Improvisation students must choose TWO electives from this list: beginning guitar, world drumming, music theory, and sketch comedy.

Steel Drum Band: Students will learn how to play the Caribbean steel drum in an ensemble setting in an exciting hands-on method complete with lessons on Caribbean culture and food! Students in the Steel Drum Band will learn and perform songs in the style of calypso, reggae and rock music. No prior experience is needed. Instruments will be available on site for use at no extra fee. Steel Drum Band students must choose TWO electives from this list: beginning guitar, world drumming, sketch comedy or music theory.

Chandler Academy of Performing Arts Electives Jazz Band I & II: This elective is open to any Advanced Band student in grades 6th-12th who wants to play and learn how a jazz band creates and improvises music. Students need to be able to read music and be willing to learn how to improvise music. This elective requires the student to choose jazz band as BOTH electives. No other elective will be available. Beginning Guitar: This elective is open to beginning guitar students in grades 6th-12th. Students will learn to play a variety of strums and chords and will be taught how various combinations of chords are put together to create the foundation of a song. Student must provide his or her own instrument. (Electric guitars and amps are discouraged, but accepted.) World Drumming: This elective is open to any student who is interested in learning about the different rhythms and patterns associated with different cultures around the world. Various drums and instruments will be used during this exciting class. No previous musical experience is necessary. Instruments will be provided. Sketch Comedy: Come learn the art of Sketch Comedy with John Janezic. Students will learn the craft of writing and performing their own sketch comedy routine. Basic improvisation exercises will be utilized by the students as a fun, creative tool to brainstorm and develop sketch ideas. Ultimately, the course will help you discover what is unique about your own sense of humor and creativity. No previous experience is necessary. Music Theory / Composition: This class will instruct students on the various structures of which go into the building of any musical number. Students will learn the importance of scales, harmonies, melodies and rhythms. This elective is a requirement for any high school student participating in the camp for credit.

*CTA Spalding offerings are available to students presently enrolled in any CTA school. *If you are waiting on an open enrollment boundary exemption or have not secured enrollment at a CTA school, the CTA Spalding course offerings are NOT recommended. We DO NOT offer Spalding classes to students entering kindergarten.

Get on Stage!, Christina Vail, Teacher Hamilton High: This course has two sessions: K-3rd and 4th-6th. Let your little star learn the skills to take the stage! This class teaches acting, improvisation, pantomime, and speaking skills to students using fun, interactive games and activities. This class improves reading comprehension, public speaking skills, and exercises the body and the mind. Sharpen Your Reading and Writing, Paul Gaillard, Teacher Conley Elementary: This course is designed for students in the 1st grade. Using the literature lab, students will read, respond, and work on specific activities related to the daily story. Activities will include writing a response, comic strip and letter writing, story reflection, creating a word search, art, story sequencing, and story trioramas. FUN-ctional Text, Kelsey Deavers, Teacher Haley Elementary: This course is designed for students in grades 4th-6th. In this class students will learn all about functional text. What it is, where we see it, how it is used and why it is important. If your student has a difficult time understanding informational material, this class is for them! We will look at schedules, directions, recipes, menus, movie listings, ads and more!! Young Champions Karate: Karate classes teach self-defense and safety awareness presented by certified black belt instructors in an exciting format especially for students! Open to boys and girls ages 4-15, this program follows a unique curriculum beginning with release techniques, abduction prevention, respect and discipline. Beginner classes are held once a week for 40

minutes, and students have the opportunity to test for progressive belt ranks each semester, continuing through the rank of black belt. Students learn essential life skills in addition to

Young Champions Cheer: Cheerleading classes feature FUN and safety as students build skills preparing them for school tryouts! Open to ages 4-15, students learn cheers, chants, jumps, pom-dance routines and age-appropriate stunts with opportunities to perform in parades and competitions. Classes are held one night a week for 40 minutes (Jr. Varsity, ages 4-6 and Varsity, ages 7-8) or 60 minutes (All Stars, ages 9-15). Students can earn medals and trophies as they strengthen teamwork participation, physical fitness, self-confidence, and spirit! For
