Parenting Tips
Issue 4 Nov 2018
The year 2018 has been such a wonderful year for our students in the middle primary. I am surestudents and teachers had a memorable year together. This year has been exceptionallyspecial having both FTs play such a huge role in the well-being of the students in the level. Ontop of that, we have our Peer Support Leaders (PSL) in every class to provide support to theirfellow peers. In this issue, we will continue to highlight the journey of our wonderful students. Dojoin the level or form class ClassDojo for ‘live’ updates by the teachers.
On behalf of all the P4 teachers, we would like to wish our P4 students all the very best as theymove on to the next block in Changkat Primary School. May you continue to demonstrate Gritand Empathy in your future endeavours.

9 Habits of Empathetic ChildrenDr Borba is a parenting expert and an educational
psychologist. In her recently published book, UnSelfie:
Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me
World, she offers a 9-step programme to help parentsand educators to cultivate empathy in children.
Empathy is a trait that is essential in being a Learner
with Passion and a Citizen of Honour.
These 9-step programme is divided into 3 parts:1. Developing Empathy
Parents, guardians and teachers are the best role
models to impart their beliefs and to nurture
empathy in our children.
2. Practicing Empathy
Practise makes perfect. Hence, it is crucial to
provide opportunities for our children to apply
the skills and knowledge that they have learnt
from their trusted adult.
3. Living Empathy
Once children have internalised the importance
of empathy and seen how it could improve their
relationships with people around them, they will
be able to make a difference in the lives of
others. They will then be able to lead change in
the future.

Art & Music Fiesta

Art is fun. I love to draw during my free time.
Through drawing, I am able to express my
creativity by creating my own design.
During the Art Fiesta, I was given the
opportunity to showcase my artworks. This
was the first time I saw my peers appreciate
my art. The medium that we used for
drawing and colouring was chalk. It was a
memorable experience as I am only used
to using crayon or colour pencil.
Abilene Buthor Seet Rui Si 3D
My friends and I made bottle shakers during
the Music Fiesta. I brought a bottle and some
beans. I had to make sure that the bottle has
been cleaned and dried at home. In class,
we were told to decorate the bottle using
markers that my form teacher brought for us
to share. We were allowed to use the shakers
during our interclass games. It was useful for
cheering for my friends who were playing.
Ngoh Jun Hao 3I
My favourite thing to draw is
fierce mythical creatures like
dinosaurs, dragons and also
phoenixes. Previously, I could
only draw these creatures on
paper. I was excited to be
able to draw on the wall! I
would like to do this activity
again.

It was fun running during the race
as I got to exercise. We did not
win but we were still happy as we
had a lot of fun. My classmates
had good teamwork. Although
we were tired after every race,
we continued to cheer for our
friends.

My friends and I felt really happy even though
we were not the champion. We won second
place! It was fun. I loved the scooter relay
because it was easy for me to move around. I
also had the opportunity to choose my own
buddy, Ivan. He is a good team player and
he is also a fast runner.

I loved the tele-match. I enjoyed myself as I
enjoy anything that involves running. When we
were playing, my classmates cheered for us
with the posters that they made. We did not win
but I was not upset because I enjoyed the
experience. It was not about winning. It was
about having fun and showing sportsmanship.

The Learning Fiesta was held in
the foyer and the canteen.
There were many students
trying on the police equipment.
They also took pictures. I feel
that it is important for the
police officers to come to
create awareness amongst the
students. Singapore needs the
Police Force to capture cyber
criminals. These criminals are
hackers and can affect the
lives of Singaporeans. They can
also track our whereabouts. It is
important to keep Singapore
safe.

MTL Fortnight & P3 Cultural Camp
T e r m 3
There were three activities
that we did in the hall.
One game involves
balancing of a string. It
was fun and we have to
take turns to play it.
Resilience is required to
complete the task. Without
it, we will not be able to
succeed. Integrity is also
needed so that we are fair
to other players. Although I
have seen it before, it was
the first time that I tried
playing it.
Jaython Tan Ze Bin 3R
I will never forget my experience
playing the angklung. It was very
challenging. We had to remember
the numbers that are used for the
different notes. However, after a few
tries, my friends and I managed
complete the song that was taught.
I was proud of myself because it was
the first time playing the angklung. I
wish that my parents can buy me an
angklung so that I can practise with
my brothers at home.

I did batik painting with my friends. The trainer taught us the way to
blend colours on our art piece. I
took about 20 minutes to complete
my artwork. I enjoyed the
experience as it was my first time. If I
am given another opportunity, I
would like to draw animals like
butterflies and birds as the design for
my batik painting.

The Tamil activities were held in the pal
room. We played many games. There
were two activities that were interesting.
The first was, pallangulli and second was
aaddu puli aatam. The first game is similar
to congkak, a Malay traditional game.
We played in pairs. It was interesting how
we are able to apply calculation in the
game. The second activity was based on
a story about a goat and a tiger. The
whole experience was memorable and I
love spending time with my friends in the
Tamil class. Tamil is after all one of my
favourite subjects. I also love the
language because of the way the letters
are written.

I like the pot painting. The designs were
pretty and there were gems around the pot.
I enjoyed painting with my friends.

I was tasked to design a piece of pottery
during MTL Fortnight. After a few minutes of
decorating the piece, I realised that there
were some empty spaces. I decided to add
my own creation into these spaces. I drew a
snake and a few dots. I chose a snake
because it is my favourite animal. It is a
vicious animal with great speed. I was
happy I was given a chance to draw it on
the pottery. I wish I can decorate a real pot.

Buddy Cleaning Program

P3
I like cleaning because its fun and it makes the
school cleaner. We should not make the
cleaners work so hard. Most of them are
elderly and may have back problems. We
must always try to demonstrate empathy
everywhere in school. If the classroom is dirty,
we will not be able to concentrate in our
studies. Cockroaches and flies will enter the
classrooms. I do not like that.
Fu Shijun, Ethan 3D
My friends and I cleaned the art room with
mops. It is important to mop a floor dry
because someone can slip and fall if it is
wet. I applied this experience at home. I
feel that I can now clean my home better.
Recently, I helped my mom to mop the
living room and bedroom. My mother
praised me because I keep my rooms
clean now.

Print Making
T e r m 3
I made two designs for my Print Making. The first
design I chose to draw was the airport and the
second was a flower. I enjoyed the activity
because my art pieces were colourful! My friends
saw my work and praised me. I was proud of
myself because I did not think I was able to do it.
It took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to complete
the art pieces.
Nurul Hasya Insyirah binte Ibrahim 4D
I was excited when I found out that our
MCCA is Print Making. I am quite familiar with
the process because I did it once in Malaysia.
It is similar to batik painting. It was fun. I hope
batik painting is a CCA in Changkat Primary
School. I liked painting with my friends as we
were able to exchange creative ideas to
improve our artwork.

On day 1, we visited Sentosa for a scavenger hunt.
We were tasked to draw a map for members from
the other group. We must ensure that our map is
accurate so that it helps the other group in their
hunt. At the same time, I’m proud of my team
because our map was creatively drawn. In this
activity, we learnt that striving for accuracy was
important. It was amazing!

I felt homesick after the campfire. It was my first time camping without my parents. I really missed
my bedroom. I had difficulty sleeping that night but I’m glad that I had supportive friends who
helped me survive the camp. It was also my first time cooking breakfast on my own. I got to cook
my favourite food, baked beans. I was proud of myself because at home, my mother would
normally be there to help me.
Md Haidil bin Md Hazli 4P
I have always loved archery tag. When I was small,
my ambition was to be a master shooter. It was a
dream come true during the camp. I hope to
represent Singapore in an archery competition in the
Olympics. I like it when I am able to aim at the target
and shoot it in a straight line. I need to apply
discipline in archery so that I can improve my skills.

I like it when we are grouped with students from other classes. I rarely see other students
besides my own classmates. I am thankful I am able to be friends with Robbie, Chloe and
Javier. Although i have seen them in school, we have never interacted. They are fun to
hang out with. We get along well because we joke and laugh together.
Ong Zi Juan, Dana 4I
The most memorable
experience during the camp
was when we created a
map of Sentosa. There was a
time limit. Our trainer, Flash,
informed us that we needed
to hide 3 pictures and
observe our surroundings.
We must transfer this
knowledge into our map!
We did not have enough
time to finish the map. Yet, I
am proud of my group
mates for not giving up
easily.
Jozadak Chan Tsong Kit 4E
It was a fun experience. We played many games and compete amongst each other. My
favourite is the Amazing Race. We had to collect stamps around Siloso Beach. We were
very motivated to get as many stamps as possible. Whenever we saw a pit-stop, we would
be very excited and run to it quickly. We wanted to be the best team in the camp. During
the camp, I learnt that it is important to show empathy. When our camp mate was not
well, we slowed our pace. I loved the camp as I was able to help others.

Archery tag was fun. We are given a
bow and arrow. Our target was a board
with 5 circles. We must hit all 5 circles or
we can shoot the opponents to win. My
group’s strategy was to focus on the
opponent. Althought we did not win, I
still enjoyed watching others play. I
learnt how to aim. I also understand that
team work is important. Without it, we
will continue arguing and have a lower
chance of winning. We will also have
lesser friends.
Kyson Khosasi 4I
The most memorable experience for me
was the campfire. One of the trainers
danced. It was funny looking at her
dancing. After that, we were all told to
stand and dance together with the
trainers. I was quite afraid to dance
because of the campfire in front of us.
However, I felt safe because the trainers
were between us and the fire. I trust that
they will take care of me. After all the
fun, we went to the canteen to have my
last supper with my group mates.
Because of all the excitement, I could
not sleep that night!

Science Centre Learning Journey2 7 J u n 2 0 1 8
One interesting fact
about light was that it
comes in three main
colours; red, blue and
green. This is different
from the primary colours
that we learn in Art –
red, blue and yellow.
Besides that, we also
learnt about how light
energy is being used to
power a solar panel. We
conducted experiments
to show how light travels
with the use of convex
and concave lenses.
Now, I have a clearer
understanding of the
differences between
reflection and refraction.
Koh Shin Robbie 4E
I like the interactive displays at the gallery. My friends and I had the opportunity to experiment
with these displays. My favourite was the display on optical illusion. I also enjoyed the Science
lesson. It was cool. I feel that experiments help me understand concepts easily. We learnt a new
topic; light and how light travels. We also learnt about the different kinds of light. We were
introduced to a special light that gives out heat. The purpose of that light is to simulate solar
power. The trainer was also good as she was clear in her explanation.
Teh Yu Cheng Dexter 4P
We learnt about heat. I
am thankful that heat
will be taught in school
in the following week. I
had a better
understanding of the
topic and was more
ready in class. An
experiement that we
did in Science Centre
was about a candle
and 3 nails. We had to
observe which nail will
drop first. It was not my
first time going to the
Science Centre but I
prefer it this year as we
were conducting
experiments instead of
looking out for plants in
the garden.

My buddy was Tonk Haw. She is a very quiet person but helpful. She assisted me in checking my
work. This experience also taught me to introduce people to our country. It feels nice to introduce
my school to Tonk Haw. I shared about our school values and school rules. One rule that she agrees
with was that dangling earings are dangerous. I am thankful that she spoke English. It made it easy to
communicate with her.
Yanamandra Rithika 4E
Her name was Bow. When I met her, she looked quiet but she was actually very helpful. She
attempted a few of the problem sums taught by my teacher. During PE, I taught her how to play

resilient. They always try their best even though they lost.
