LWR/CLC Baby Care Kits Project 2017 Goal-500-Goal Achieved-6/6/2017 Kits Completed-840 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer As the LWR calendar year for 2017 ends on October 28, the project continues to gather and pack until that date. Final numbers for this year's contributions will be available in the December The Good News. For your information- once the kits are loaded on the LWR truck which comes to Christ Lutheran once a year, they are then transported to LWR warehouses to be checked in, quality controlled, and then shipped somewhere in the world where the need is the greatest including the United States. As natural disasters, poverty, and warring factions continue to displace people at an alarming rate, the LWR warehouses are emptied of their contents quickly. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE IN ANY WAY HELPED IN THE ASSEMBLING OF THE BABY CARE KITS THIS YEAR. With all of us working together, we have been able to respond to this crucial need and let those global neighbors know they are not forgotten. WINTER SEWING? Do you know of someone who is looking for something of value to do once winter is here? Join our diaper sewing group as we begin 2018. All diapers needed by this project are sewn by US. A person does not have to be a CLC member. We have CLC friends who have been a part of our group for years. The diapers are all cut and ready for sewing. No deadlines are given. Sew on your time and at your convenience. Just let me know if you or someone you know are available to sew. December Needs will be all our required items as we start over to gather and pack. Check out our weekly and monthly publications or pick up a card list from the white basket under the shelf in the Gathering Area as to our 14 specific items. Remember our clothing age is up to two years with an emphasis on six, twelve, eighteen, and twenty-four months. INCLUDE ONLY ITEMS ON THE LWR LIST. We can not add or subtract from that list. Only new or gently used clothing can be sent. Clothing with stains, holes, and rips is not usable. Please indicate if clothing has been laundered. All donated clothing is washed so it is clean and fresh smelling.

LWR/CLC Fabric Kit Project 2017 Goal-150 Achieved 7/24/2017

Kits Completed-160 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer

Watch for reduced, clearance, or fabric sales at retail stores, antique shops, Goodwill, and resale venues. Check with friends or family members who sew or did sew and who might be looking for a place that accepts fabric donations. This project needs cotton/cotton blend material that is 44-45 inch wide in three yard lengths. Fabric that is wider/narrower than 44-45 inches can be used also. Check out our specific measurements in our weekly and monthly publications. THANKS FOR ALL THE FABRIC THAT HAS BEEN DONATED. Use coupons to lower fabric price. December Need is cotton/cotton blend material. Any color or pattern can be used except for offensive sayings or symbols.

Beginning SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH @ 9:20 AM, please join Walter Wangerin, Jr. for a Bible study,

the book of Revelation.

CLC Social Ministry and Mission November 2017

As you do it for the least of these, you do it for Christ. (Matthew 25:40) Each month the Social Ministry Committee highlights a special giving opportunity. November’s specific emphasis is to provide support for the Lutheran Deaconess Association (LDA) www.thelda.org. Lutheran Deaconesses and Deacons wash the feet of the world. With towel and basin, they share food, clothing, medicine, love, and the gospel with those in need. Every church can see service as central to its identity and it’s calling as God’s people. The LDA trains and supports deaconesses and deacons for servant leadership. It also encourages the whole people of God in their diaconal life. It leads the church in recognizing its call to diakonia. LDA national headquarters are located adjacent to the Valparaiso University campus, and CLC has benefited from the work of deaconesses over the past several years. Our own members, Diana Iltzsche and Pastor Jane Aicher are consecrated Deaconesses. In prior years, CLC had deaconess students do their field work here. A number of CLC members have served on committees and the board of the LDA. On Sunday, November 12, Deaconess Kristin Lewis, the Co-Director of Education and Formation for the LDA will be our guest preacher, and Deaconess Lisa Polito, the LDA's Executive Director, will share the work of the LDA during the Faith Formation hour. Use your weekly worship service envelope and indicate “LDA” on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving. Thank you for your support of monthly social ministry emphasis needs this month.

Northwest Indiana Lutheran Food Pantries. Many Sunday School children bring food items for the Food Pantry each Sunday. Items are taken to several food pantries throughout Porter County. Adults and youth can also contribute by bringing items and leaving them in the box near the Youth area at the west entrance to the church. CLC Recycling Project. Dave Keammerer collects aluminum cans each Sunday morning. Cans can be placed in Dave’s red Ford truck in the church parking lot. The cans are collected, deposited, and then dollars obtained are given to social ministry needs. If you have any questions about the logistics of how you can contribute you can find Dave before and after Adult Forum time each Sunday. CLC Least Coin Jar. Unsure of what to do with those pennies, nickels, dimes collecting in various places around your home? Bring them to church and deposit them in the Least Coin Jar – when the jar is full these coins are added up and used to benefit a social ministry need (beneficiaries include local food pantries and Lutheran World Relief international hunger needs projects). Volunteer Opportunities. Look for upcoming volunteer opportunities in which to be involved this fall: Aluminum Can Recycling Project; Thrivent Activities; food donations to NWI Food Bank and other local food pantries; Youth, Sunday School, and LL Preschool service projects; CLC Women's’ and Men's’ Groups service activities; Lutheran World Relief quilt-making; Church World Service CROP Hunger Walk (Nov. 5); and Food Bank of Northwest Indiana food distribution from CLC (Dec. 9). See information about above activities in the Social Ministry Bulletin Board areas outside the sanctuary and in the East Link.

A Message from Pastor Erica

For All the Saints… Sometimes as Lutherans, we get hinky when conversation turns to the saints. Our Reformation roots make us suspicious of anything that might obscure our ability to see God’s grace in Jesus as the center of it all. And of course, our Reformation roots quickly got entwined with the sort of knee-jerk anti-Catholicism that uses “that’s too Catholic” as a filter instead of “does this help us hear the gospel clearly?” as a filter. So, we’ve got a 500 year tradition of throwing the baby out with the bathwater in any number of unhelpful ways! And the communion of saints is a prime example.

“We don’t pray to saints,” is what I was taught as a child – because in Jesus we are given a direct Word from God, and made children of God with no need for intermediaries. But even if I don’t need an intermediary, I sure do need company on this journey! We know that our children learn more by example than they ever do by “instruction” – that’s not something we grow out of. I’m sure you’ve heard Pr. Tim say it: “Faith is caught, not taught!” The saints are God’s people of every time and place who are saved by grace. They’re companions on the journey who can teach us what faith looks like. How faith prays. How faith struggles and doubts. How faith trusts. How faith listens for the Word. Saints are those next to us in the pews, and Christians across the world. Saints remind us we are never alone – no matter what our struggle is, we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who have walked a similar path in faith. In their living and in their dying, saints point us to Christ. We do not pray to the saints, but we do pray with the saints, held together in the love of God that is stronger than death.

Who are the saints that point to Christ for you? Parents or grandparents who showed you what it looks like to trust God? A young child with an openness to God that opens your heart as well? Those you meet whose hunger and thirst invite you to follow Jesus in caring for others? Do you resonate with Mary, the mother of Jesus? Augustine, the early North African Bishop, or Oscar Romero, a modern Salvadoran Bishop and martyr?

November is the month of Thanksgiving, but it starts with All Saints Day – the day we are given to give thanks for those who have gone ahead of us into the presence of God, and those who walk alongside us in faith. All through this month, we will take “children’s time” as a time for all of us to hear stories of the saints – the people who point us to Jesus. So, come to worship planning to overhear! Peace, Pastor Erica

Christ Lutheran Church Youth Ministries News from Clint Mullet

Two weeks ago, the Valparaiso High School community lost a freshman student,

Jazmin Clanton. This tragedy had an impact on the school, the community, and our own youth group. As an adult who helps look after and shape these young people, I have been so encouraged by the outpouring of support for our youth. Church members, parents, community members, VHS faculty and staff, and our Pastors have all been involved in providing support and care for the teen community. As a youth ministry, we will continue to listen to our teens and walk with them through this tragedy. We opened our doors to them when the news broke, with Pastor Tim and Pastor Erica adjusting their availability and assisting in preparing the sanctuary. Kyle Otten spoke to our youth group on grief, how to grieve in a healthy way, and how to help those who are grieving. I have met with youth one-on-one who have requested it.

Lastly, Christ Lutheran Church will be hosting a VHS Memorial Service for Jazmin Clanton on October 26th. Cicely Powell, the Director of Culture and Student Services at VHS, has been grateful for the way we have partnered with her department and the high school. We are grateful to help in any way we can. I have been encouraged that, in the midst of the darkness, Christ Lutheran Church has been a light for young people and their school. On the Lighter Side…

After two meetings with Campus Life staff, I agreed to host an experimental event as a partnership between our youth ministry and Campus Life at VHS. ‘Halftime Lunch Break’ was held on 9/29 after VHS finished their half day. We had between 50-60 VHS students in the Gathering Area, where they ate lunch and hung out for two hours. Only 5 of these students were CLC youth. This event was a huge success, exceeded our wildest expectations, and we will be planning the next event with a far bigger goal in mind. Early this month, the youth ministry made our annual trek to Guse’s Corn Maze in Wanatah, Indiana! We had a blast! Friendships were deepened, new jokes were made, and our bond as a group grew tighter. It’s a joy to spend time with teens. Amidst the sorrow and grief in the VHS community, it was a much needed break to laugh, smile, and have fun.

Little Lamb Preschool

Scholastic Book Fair We invite CLC members to stop by our Scholastic Book Fair in the Youth room, Monday, October 30th through Friday, November 3rd . The hours for the sale will be Monday – Thursday 8:30-9:15 and 2:30-3:15, and Friday 8:30-9:15. There will also be a small table of books available in the Church Narthex on Sunday, October 29th and November 5th. Please stop by at either location! LLP profit is about 25% of the sales. The Chair for this important fund-raiser is Mallory Raab. She is assisted by many LLP parents.

Thank You for Scholarships!! Little Lamb Preschool would like to thank the congregational members who have provided scholarships for our families in need. The school, and especially these families, feels very appreciative of your kindness, generosity and Christian love. May God richly bless you for what you have given these children! All of the scholarship needs at this time have been covered.

Service Projects

Our families collected 300 bars of soap for Lutheran World Relief. WOW! The children really enjoy helping other children in this important service project by providing the gift of cleanliness to families around the world. We are blessed with generous families with hearts for social ministry. We are now collecting items for Hilltop House. LLP Parents are in charge of all of our service projects. Thank you Christ Lutheran for joining with us as together we “shepherd God’s children!”

Christian Mission Statement Little Lamb Preschool, in union with Christ Lutheran Church, serves God by shepherding His children as we nurture the whole child in partnership with families.

Social Ministry Men’s Shelter Summary Greetings everyone:

Christ Lutheran Church provided 28 nights of shelter coverage this year to the men associated with the New Creations Men’s Shelter and the VMOS group. We had a full complement of seven churches this summer and we did not need to provide any additional nights this year for the program.

Our church hosted 461 men or client contacts during our summer 2017 shelter season. Our average number of men for each night was 16.46 men during the season. Our season maximum night was hosting 24 men on 5/6/2017 and our season lowest night was hosting ten men on 8/5/2017 and 8/19/2017. Ten nights of this year's shelter season experienced at least 20 men being provided shelter for the evening.

The takethemameal.com website was filled very quickly this season by the 28 groups listed on the website. Three of the listed groups served meals twice during the 2017 season and one family provided meals on three different nights. Unfortunately, all names of those individuals serving were not listed in our weekly submissions; however, we have added a few of missing names to the summary spreadsheet to provide an estimate of 146 meal volunteers. Those 146 meal providers and/or volunteers provided 474 meals for the men and another 265 meals for our shelter volunteers during this season (a total of 739 meals served this year at our site). Our coordinator and lead group made the decision to feed clients who arrived at our doors who did not or could not stay at our facility for the night for a variety of reasons. We experienced this need situation six times during our past season.

Our shelter pantry providers and meal providers assisted in serving 461 breakfast meals to our clients during their stay with us during the season. The same group of people provided another 422 brown bag lunches during the season for the men as they left the shelter each morning. Our Popcorn Festival Committee group (CLC Youth Group) provided another 5 - 6 lunch meals to the men during Popcorn Festival on 9/9/2017.

We are estimating approximately 2100 hours of volunteer commitment this 2017 shelter year by the various groups associated with the operation of the shelter. We would like to thank all volunteers who either worked the various shifts, provided or served a meal, provided items for our shelter pantry, washed bedding, or financially supported our shelter operation. We want to thank the congregation for providing an excellent building (including the additional building operation costs) for our guests remain safe during their time with the shelter program.

As you can see, it takes many people to run this ministry program. We feel very blessed and honored to work with the many volunteers and supporters of this ministry program. Again, thank you for your support of the men’s shelter program. May the peace of the LORD be with each of you. Respectfully submitted,

Irene Adams, Social Ministry Chairperson Mark Bartusch, Lead Diana Iltzsche, Coordinator and Lead Kathy Lundstrom, Laundry Coordinator Lisa Owen, Coordinator and Lead Tony Reinhold, Coordinator and Lead Stephanie Svetich, Meal Coordinator Tim Sutherland, Lead Laura Venstrom, Pantry Coordinator

Page 7: CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH The Good News 2017clcvalpo.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/TGN-NOVEMBER-2017.pdf · November 5—December 3—“Lutheranism 101” with Pastor Tim (Church Hall)

Personal Care Kits

Thank you to everyone who has helped with our project this past year. Whether you donated items or cash, procured Thrivent Action Team cards, or helped pack our boxes, your help was greatly appreciated. We are happy to report that 1,050 Personal Care Kits are on their way to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse to be shipped to places of need throughout the world.

Since we shipped our kits last year, people in Lebanon, Mauritania, Angola, and Burkina Faso have been helped by our efforts. We are looking forward to reports as to where this year's efforts will help those in need.

In this year, we have found new sources to purchase needed combs and nail clippers at a huge savings, allowing us to take greater advantage of cash donations and increase the number of people we can help. We continue to need towels, toothbrushes and soap. Please note, the towels need to be lightweight and dark colored and soap bars should weigh at least four ounces. We would prefer cash donations for clippers and combs, since buying in bulk gives us tremendous savings. We have found what are the best places to purchase any of the items. Check with me to find where the best buys are located. Any cash contributions may be placed in the church offering and labeled "Personal Care Kits". Donated items may be placed in the container in the gathering place.

Thank you to all who participate in this ministry of caring and helping those in need. Direct any questions you may have to Dave Keammerer, 462-8447 or [email protected].

Mark Your Calendar - Communion Conversations

In Holy Communion, we are given the treasure of Jesus' presence with us in a tangible way – his body and blood given for us for the forgiveness of sin. We gather at Christ’s invitation and in this ‘family meal’ he unites us with one another, with the church through all time and space. We are given a “foretaste” of the feast to come in the fullness of God’s kingdom, and we become what we receive – the body of Christ, given for the life of the world. At CLC, we treasure this gift, and the promises of God, recognizing that they are something too precious NOT to use. This is a gift we wouldn’t want to miss, a gift that belongs to all of God’s

people. So we celebrate it weekly, and we welcome children to the table as they are ready to join us. As families with younger children find that their children are hungry to receive Christ’s presence, we have Communion preparation for the whole family. We gather and talk about what this gift means, about Jesus' presence in his body and blood, about the forgiveness of sin that comes through his cross. We bake bread together and marvel at how God takes what is ordinary – bread from our hands, wine from nearby vineyards, and by his presence transforms it into something much more. A Communion Conversations event for families with Elementary-age and younger children will take place in the Spring. We encourage families to continue to talk about Holy Communion, since our understanding shifts as we grow. And in preaching, both pastors try to continue to lift up the gift and mystery of the sacrament as we all continue to grow in faith. At 5th grade, we continue our learning, gathering all the students and parents talk together about the sacrament, and welcome to the table those who have not joined us at a younger age. Communion Conversations for 5th graders and families will be Wednesdays, November 1 and 8, at 7:00 pm.
