Our office continuously pressed this vital health issue with CEO of LG Health, Board and Minister of Health & Community Services. Echocardiograms are widely used diagnostic tests for cardiology services used to diagnose and manage patients with heart disease. A full-time Regional Echocardiography Technologist will be based in St. Anthony. Service commences this fall.
LG Health offers those between the ages of 50 and 74 who are at average risk for
colon cancer participation in program. A kit can be requested by calling 1-855-

PILOT PROJECT IS NEEDED:
I continue to raise with the Minister of Health & LG Health an opportunity to expand service at White Bay Central Health Centre by utilizing space to add up to six long-term care beds without having to build. I thank Town Councils for adding their voice to the lobby. Seniors requiring long-term care should access it closer to home.

District has Agriculture Potential
Fisheries Research
& Development
- Northern Lights Seafood Ltd. receive $39,000 to research and develop new scallop product.
There are a number of roadside gardens, greenhouses and even small-scale farms throughout the District. I’ve seen grapes, zucchini and a variety of herbs, spices and even teas being produced locally. We should also be a haven for sheep farming. There is opportunity for community gardens, community supported agriculture & farmer’s markets.
Wood Pellets Key
to Green Economy
Fire Dept’s get funds
More than $282,000 was disbursed to Straits Fire Dept (rescue pumper & 4 PPE) St. Lunaire-Griquet Fire Dept (6 pagers) & Roddickton-Bide Arm Fire Dept (4 SBCAs & 2 cylinders). At announcement Minister noted more funding would be revealed in coming weeks. Our office continues to support the efforts of all our volunteer departments.
CELL TOWERS
Bell Mobility has made a submission for support from Government to add 15 communities of the Northern Pen to service Cook’s Harbour-St. Lunaire-Griquet-L’Anse aux Meadows-St. Anthony Bight and areas. This would also include cell service to Route 430 between St. Anthony and Cook’s Harbour. Addition of this service would create opportunities for residential, business attraction/expansion, tourism marketing, local cottage industry and improve public safety.
$1.3 Million in Municipal Capital Works
Access to safe and clean drinking water must be a top priority for our communities. An investment of $434,000 will support the Town of St. Anthony with upgrades to the water intake system. Additionally an investment of $829,600 will be made in the Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm for lift station projects.
On-going water related-projects in chlorination systems for Towns of Conche & Main Brook.
CRTC Filing
7 communities in the District do not have/not slated for access to high-speed Internet via cable or wireless. Those with access to Internet service via satellite pay higher fees and are subject to caps. I have filed submission supporting fee reductions with Federal Regulator to the Inquiry Officer. A report on outcome is due in October 2014.
Broadband Slated for 2 More Communities
Communities of Pine’s Cove and Eddies Cove East will receive broadband Internet under current round of Rural Broadband Funding.
Continuing to seek solutions for remaining communities with providers, Feds & Province ($305 Million allocated under Industry Canada over next 5 years).
60,000 MT of wood pellet production could heat thousands of homes using pellet stoves or furnaces.
Rentech Inc. considering investment and business opportunities on Great Northern Peninsula
I’ve continued to press Government asking them to remain committed to forestry jobs & development on the Peninsula.
Current stability of industry and long-term sustainable forestry jobs will depend on investment in Green Economy.
Government should re-establish pellet re-bate program, establish incentives for heat pumps and conservation
Englee Harbour Authority receives special assistance grant for enhancements. MHA participates in recreational fishery. We need a plan for cod.
