THE PATH TO FREEDOM Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten Commandments” is a post‑biblical, phrase that developed along with an image of God as police officer that is not found in today’s passage from Exodus. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God’s freedom through Christ. IRISH SODA BREAD RECIPE … 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened, 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons sugar ,1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt ,1/3 cup raisins, if desired,¾ cup buttermilk … Heat oven to 375ºF. Grease cookie sheet. Cut butter into flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt in large bowl, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in raisins and just enough buttermilk so dough leaves side of bowl. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead 1 to 2 minutes or until smooth. Shape into round loaf, about 6 ½ inches in diameter. Place on cookie sheet. Cut an X shape about ½ inch deep through loaf with floured knife. Bake 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with butter or margarine, softened, if desired.

Last week, the Youth Group talked about self esteem and self confidence. Be-fore Ash Wednesday, some members of the group set goals for Lent to improve their "look." Thus, each member of the group

participated in an affirmation exercise. Kevin Talbot facilitated the making of the "Me Tree." Each student wrote things they liked about themselves on leaves, followed by every other member writing something nice about them too. Everyone left feeling good about themselves and their relationship with the other members. The activity provided perspective as to how Lenten goals do not solely need to be about eating right.

This week, our very own Fr. Raphael will walk the group through a series of activities and dis-cussion topics. We look forward to hearing many of his thoughts about his life that relate to our young people!

RECETA PARA EL PAN IRLANDÉS DE SODA ... 3 cucharas con mantequilla o margarina, ablandada, 2 ½ tazas de harina multiuso, 2 cucharas de azúcar, 1 cucharadita de bicarbonato de sodio, 1 cucharadita de levadura en polvo, ½ cucharadita de sal, 1/3 taza de pasas, si deseado,¾ taza de suero de mantequilla (buttermilk)… Calentar el horno a 375ºF. Engrasar la hoja de hornear. Agregar la mantequilla en la harina, el azúcar, el bicarbonato de sodio, el polvo de hornear y la sal en el tazón grande, utilizar la licuadora de pastel o 2 cuchillos entrecruzados, hasta que la mezcla se parezca a trozos finos. Agregar las pasas y suficiente suero de mantequilla así que la masa deja el lado del

tazón. Voltear masa en la superficie levemente enharinada. Amasar 1 a 2 minutos o hasta que suavice. Formar en barra redonda, cerca de 6 ½ pulgadas de diámetro. Colocar en la hoja de hornear. Cortar en una forma X acerca de ½ pulgada de barra profunda con cuchillo enharinado. Hornear 35 a 45 minutos o hasta dorado. Cepille con mantequilla o margarina, ablandada, si deseado. LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY “Nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado”. Estas palabras de san Pablo nos llegan hoy que nos encontramos en el punto medio de nuestro camino cuaresmal. Al escuchar las palabras desafiantes de las Escrituras de hoy recordemos

que la cruz de Cristo es la que revela la verdad central de nuestra fe cristiana, pues en esa cruz el Señor tomó sobre sí los pecados de todos, tomó sobre sí cada quebrantamiento de los mandamientos de Dios y ganó la salvación para todos los que se arrepintieran de sus pecados y llegaran a creer en el Evangelio.

CAMINO A LA LIBERTAD La mayoría de nosotros, si nos preguntaran “¿Aparece la frase ‘los Diez Mandamientos’ en la Biblia?” daríamos la respuesta errónea, pues la respuesta es “no”. “Los diez mandamientos” es una frase post‑bíblica, que se desarrolló junto con una imagen de Dios como ‘policía’ la cual no se encuentra en el pasaje de hoy del libro del Éxodo. La primera frase es clave: Dios es el que nos sacó de la esclavitud; cumplir las leyes o mandamientos de Dios es nuestro camino a la libertad. Los cambistas a quienes Jesús echó del templo no estaban violando ninguno de los mandamientos, pero tampoco estaban ayudando a la gente a encontrar el camino hacia la libertad de Dios cuando llegaban al Templo a rezar. Esta es una lección de la Cuaresma importante para nosotros. Tenemos que dejar de preguntarnos si estamos o no violando alguna regla o reglamento específico, y en cambio examinar nuestra vida para ver si verdaderamente estamos siguiendo un camino hacia la libertad de Dios por medio de Cristo.
