EMERGENCY 111Te Awamutu Police have dealt with the following

matters since last week:

24 hour Victim Support is available in Te Awamutu byphoning 027 4711529.

Drug operationproves worth

Police credit their ability toreduce social harm caused bydrugs in the Waikato by around$18 Million to a combination ofsound investigative work andsupport from the rural commun-ity.

The Waikato phase of thenationwide cannabis recoveryprogramme known as OperationKristy took place last summer.

With 7439 plants recoveredPolice believe this operation hasput a significant dent in theWaikato’s illicit drug trade, deny-ing organised criminal groups notonly revenue but illegallyobtained property as well.

In addition to cannabis plants,$185,825 worth of stolen propertyand cash was recovered duringthe operation and 164 peoplearrested.

One clandestinemethamphetamine laboratorywas also discovered during theoperation.

With the illicit drug tradedominated by organised criminalgroups, Police were not surprised17 of those arrested were mem-bers or associates of variousgroups.

They warn such groups exer-cise a significant amount of con-trol over the illicit drug market soany operation operating at a sig-nificant level is going to be doing

so as part of, or with the sanctionof, an organised criminal organ-isation.

Though a not new factor,Police continue to be alarmed atthe correlation between the illicitdrug trade and the illegal marketfor firearms and the links toorganised crime.

There were 21 firearms recov-ered by the 20 officers engaged inthe operation in the Waikato.

With a cost for the Waikato of$30,000, Police believe the oper-ation was a huge success with theconservative estimated savings ofharm to the community from theamount of cannabis recovered$17,853,600.

To combat the risk of drugs,Police need the public’s assist-ance to carry out operations suchas the one earlier this year tolimit the harm caused to thecommunity.

Such operations serve as tang-ible evidence of the value of closerelationships between theWaikato’s rural community,Police and other agencies andeffective action can only be takenagainst the drug trade with theircontinuing support.

The Waikato Police encouragepeople with information on drugrelated activity to come forward— such information can be givenconfidentially if required.

Drummer beats out rivalsBY CATHY ASPLIN

TC270809CA04It’s not hard to locate Ollie

Knight when he’s practising for aconcert - just follow the noise.

The drums aren’t the easiestinstrument to find a suitable spotfor, but Ollie is lucky to have aroom to himself in his family’sPirongia home.

When the Courier called he waspreparing for a school concert inthe community hall.

It was former Pirongia Schoolteacher, Alison Derbyshire, whoinitially encouraged him to startplaying, while former New ZealandIdol finalist Jesse O’Brien helpedhim select a drum kit.

Ollie’s natural rhythm and co-ordination saw him take to drum-ming ‘like a duck to water’.

Just a couple of years later hisability has been recognised at therecent Pulse music competition forintermediate aged students, whenhe was named best drummer fromthe 20 bands who took part.

Ollie was part of the PirongiaSchool band ‘Radio Active’ and hisrendition of the Jet song ‘Are YouGonna Be My Girl’ saw him collectCDs and drumsticks.

Ollie is also a fan of Red HotChili Peppers, Pearl Jam andNirvana, but says he enjoys a widerange of music.

Recession turning believesTaranaki-King Country MPBY GRANT JOHNSTON

Taranaki-King Country MPShane Ardern is convinced thecurrent recession has ‘hit thebottom of the ditch’ and things areheading back up for New Zealand.

But he cautions that there isstill more pain to be workedthrough and economic recoverywill be slow and gradual.

It has come home to us in recentmonths how exposed our economyis to world events, but Mr Ardernbases his ‘worst is over’ opinion onhis discussions with farmers andrural leaders and with what he sawand heard on a recent visit toAustralia.

‘‘Although the effects of thepredicted lower dairy payout havenot truly been felt here yet, Ibelieve this is the ‘bottom of theditch’.

‘‘Australia has weathered thestorm better than most, and when Iwas in South Australia they weresaying there are real signs that areasonable recovery isunderway.’’

Mr Ardern says the National-led Government had held plenty ofdiscussions about ways to ‘softenthe blow on the way down’.

‘‘The announced infrastructurespending, and further measuresyet to be announced, are going tobe very beneficial to areas like theWaikato and Te Awamutu.

‘‘The eastern highway throughHamilton will have huge potentialspinoffs for Te Awamutu and Wai-kato, not only in the contractingand construction work required, but in freeing up what has been aclogged up transport ‘pipeline’.

Another important area ofspending will be in the rollout offibre optic cabling, with aBroadband investment of $1.5Million.

‘‘In places like Te Awamutu andthe Waikato, it will free up a wholelot of international and domesticbusiness that has been slow andunwilling to invest in the nextlevel of development, because of alack of that type of infrastructureto support what a modern businessis now like.’’

Mr Ardern says while theimpacts of the reduced dairypayout on rural service towns likeTe Awamutu will be felt for sometime, with farmers cutting pendingon items that do not keep theiroperation running, ultimatelybasic supplies still have to bepurchased.

‘‘Very few farmers will allowtheir farms to be run into the

ground,’’ he says.‘‘As farmers start to open their

chequebooks again, service indus-tries will start to enjoy the benefitsof that.

‘‘The shock/horror depressiontheme of the last six months islooking like easing, then thingswill incrementally improve.

‘‘At the end of the day, we arehigh quality, low cost food pro-ducers. The world’s population isgrowing and as some of the Asiancountries become westernised, there will be opportunities fordairy exporters to expand intothose economies.

‘‘Fonterra and other firms arepursuing those opportunitiesvigorously.’’

Intersection needs workCongratulations to Lloyd

Anderson for bringing theTeasdale Street intersection to thepublic notice through the Courierlast week.

I have raised this issue withboth the Council and the policewith no results.

Those of us who work in

Teasdale Street see it as an acci-dent waiting to happen.

All it would take is for theyellow lines to be repainted and abig ‘STOP’ painted just before thefootpath (and the police to dosome revenue gathering there fora week or two) and I’m sure thatmost of the offenders would

rethink their bad habits. The truck drivers are good, it’s

the local motorists that are theproblem.

Closing the access is not practi-cal as the trucks need the straightexit, but it could be made trucksonly.

DEBRA MORRISSEY

Hats off to Win Bryantfor her contributions

I would like to pay tribute toWin Bryant who recently died, who was Te Awamutu reporterfor the Waikato Times for manyyears.

Win was also a member ofthe festival committee, alongwith then editor of the TeAwamutu Courier, Fred Cobb, and the then Mayor of TeAwamutu, Ned Freeman whichrecognised the impact of the bi-annual ‘Te Awamutu Festivalof the Arts’ locally and in NewZealand.

Also the daring and genius of

myself and the Festival Com-mittee, in a New Zealand thatwas just waking up to thewonderful world we live in.

Commencing in November1965 were many exciting pre-sentations, including a 19-year-old Kiri Te Kanawa in her firstconcert recital, in a packedtown hall.

The festivals were excitingand stimulating, for which TeAwamutu Jaycee won topawards, running through to theearly 80s.

RAY HYAMS, QSM

Why not blocklane to cars?

Re Lloyd Anderson’s letter to theEditor. I too am very concerned re thelane from Fresh Choice that comes upand out onto Teasdale Street.

The cars do not stop at the stopsign, they just power on out toTeasdale Street, and walking downTeasdale Street by the chemist shop isan accident just waiting to happen.

A long time ago I rang the Councilconcerning this also.

Why do they need to drive up there- a short cut? I say cut the lane off justabove where the cars drive into the topshops so it would not disrupt thoseshops and leave the lane to pedes-trians, bikes and scooters.

Rally cars put pressure on‘Oparau central’ parking

TC270809SP7BONNETS UP and tyres off at Oparau on Saturday.

Oparau Roadhouse was a hiveof activity on Saturday when theMetalman Possum BourneMemorial Rally raced through thearea.

‘‘We were told to expect 50competitors’ cars parking here aswe were a ‘service park’ for thestage,’’ says Bill Rogers of OparauRoadhouse.

‘ ‘The organisers weredelighted when 76 competitors setoff from Hamilton on Saturdaymorning, but we were squeezingthem in everywhere here — allover the lawn and anywhere wecould make a space.’’

But Mr Rogers says it was agreat event with so many rallycars this year.

Service crews arrived atOparau at 7am, followed by therally cars two hours later. Afterheading to Waitomo, they wereback in to Oparau around 2pm ontheir way back to Raglan. Theycovered 200km of special stagesoverall.

Chris West of Christchurchwas the winner of the fourthrunning of the annual PukekoheCar Club event — organised as atribute to the late Possum Bourne.

West was competitive but notstunning over the first threestages of the event and thenlaunched his assault on SpecialStage 4, Waitomo, winning thestage by over 26 seconds toHamilton’s Stephen Barker, totake the lead from AndrewHawkeswood.

West controlled the field forthe rest of the day despite notwinning another stage. TheChristchurch driver was thrilledwith his first win since his Inter-national Rally of Whangareitriumph in 2008.

"It was a great event, withfantastic roads. We took a softer

tyre than everyone else for Wai-tomo and that was the difference,’’west says.

‘‘There was a lot of loose graveland lots of tyre issues. We didn’thave any more soft tyres left so wehad to hold on for the rest of theday. The rally was a good oppor-tunity to come and try the carafter our issues in Wairarapawith 200km of stages in one day. Itgave us good miles before RallyNelson."

The spectacular Hawkeswoodblamed a poor tyre choice for his47 second time loss in the Wai-tomo stage despite beating Weston several stages in the afternoon.

Surprise early leader NeilMarshall of Taranaki finishedfourth after being pipped in thelast stage by 20-year-old Barker.Who showed impressive pace, continuing his promising debutyear at this level.

Marshall, who has burst to thetop of Clubmans rallying this year

with wins in Taranaki and Wai-tomo, took the lead in theWhaanga Coast stage - a feat evenmore spectacular due to the factthat he had never rallied on thestage before and as a competitorin the Te Rapa AutomotiveRepairs Top Half Rally Series wasnot allowed to do pre-eventreconnaissance.

Marshall took overall andClass D honours in the Top HalfSeries however he remains pointsbehind Craig Stevens whose con-sistent class performances leavehim at the top of the Top Halfpoints.

Current New Zealand RallyChampion Hayden Paddon usedthe day as a test session for hisforthcoming assault on WRCRally Australia, as well as aimingto secure enough points in theRally New Zealand Rising StarsInternational Award, to be con-firmed for the November awardshootout.

Te Awamutu Marist celebratedtheir 60th reunion in greatfashion on Saturday with a largecrowd attending festivities at theclub.

The day had a sad note withMarist losing one of its favouritesons, life member Terry Bennett(‘Benny Hill’ to his many friends).

‘‘Benny had given over 50years service to the club and waslooking forward to the reunion, but missed it by one day, passingaway Friday afternoon,’’ reportsRichard McCandlish.

The day started with the tra-ditional past versus present rugbygame — in this case the pastplayed the club’s President’sgrade team.

For the record the past playerswon the game 32-29, with theirplayer of the day award going toAndrew Russ.

Cameron McKenzie was playerof the day for the Bushpigs (Presi-dent’s grade team).

This was followed by the for-mal part of the day with speeches, led by the club’s president Rich-

ard Gibbons-Goodhew and thecutting of the reunion cake.

Club member Johnny Nelsonentertained the crowd with hisband and a great night was had byall, with the Te Awamutu SeniorRep team bringing the Peace andFindlay Cups back to theclubrooms after their win overHamilton.

The night ended on a good notewith the members and supporterswatching the All Blacks on the bigscreen take a one point victoryover the Wallabies.

COGS well-oiled machineGaylene Dorssers’ team retain premier title

TC270809CT01BATTLE OF CENTRES: RSN Henry Morgan Builders’ Ngahuia Kopa (left)and COGS 1’s Mihiwhatara Hohepa dispute possession in the premier final.

BY COLIN THORSEN

COGS I retained theirTe Awamutu premiernetball crown with a49-43 win over RSNHenry Morgan Builders.

The finale to the localseason was played infront of the biggestcrowds seen at Te Awa-mutu Netball Centrecourts for a number ofyears.

Both teams had theirband of supporters andplacards, although themajority of the spectatorswere gunning for theunderdogs RSN to upsetthe 2008 champions.

COGS went to the firstquarter break ahead 14-9,having scored nine of thelast 14 goals.

RSN co-coach, TraceyPaekau says it was theslow start by her teamthat ultimately cost themthe match.

‘‘Full credit to COGS,once they establishedtheir early lead they weregood enough to preserveit and we were alwaysplaying catch-up.

‘‘Our game brokedown in mid-court withour young, inexperi-enced players strugglingto connect with TianaTuuta.’’

COGS increased theirlead to 28-22 by halftime, winning the second 15minute period 14-13.

The playing throughchampions then put their‘pedal to the metal’ in thecrucial third quarter, winning 11-6 to establishan almost unassailable 11goal, 39-28, lead.

A tactical change byRSN coaches Paekau andWendy Heta, moving theexperienced Tuuta togoal-attack, opened upthe play for them in thefinal quarter.

It proved to be theonly period of play RSNwon, prevailing 15-10 toclose within six goals atthe final whistle — animprovement on theirlosing margin of 14 goalsin the 2008 final, but theirsurge was too little, toolate.

Te Awamutu netballlife member Beryl Bell —whose St Pat’s premierteams including TraceyPaekau reigned supremein the 1980s and 1990s —was an interested spec-tator.

She singled out goal-shoot Kylie Chatfield,goal-defence Josie Brownand goal-keep JanForsythe as standoutplayers for COGS, whileheaping accolades onRSN goal-keep CindyTreanor, one of the starsof the game.

RSN’S goal-defenceChyna Hohepa showedglimpses of her brilliantaerial athleticism that

saw her make this year’sWaikato premier team.

RSN finished theseason with only twolosses, both to COGS overthe past fortnight.

They will look back ona season of what mighthave been had they notlost three members oftheir starting seventhrough injury at vari-ous stages of the season— WA Kelly Miringa andGD Maree Rata-Sergent(start of championshipround) both requiringknee reconstructions, and WD Dorothy Carrwith a ruptured Achillesa week before the final.

‘‘To their credit, theirreplacements filled indoing the job admir-ably,’’ says Paekau.

Further success wentCOGS I’s way at Te Awa-mutu Netball’s end-of-season prize-giving —held immediately afterthe final — taking out theLois Healey Trophy forpremier/premier reservegoaling average.

The South Pacific Tro-phy, for senior goalingaverage, went to RSN ICBand Te Awamutu Inter-mediate Golden Bullettsclaimed the Vaile Trophyfor junior goaling aver-age.

One of the big

improvers this seasonwas the newly-formedTAS ASB team. They con-tinued their giant killingrun beating ComradesSocial 28-26 in the A2final after qualifyingfourth for the playoffs.Their season was cappedby taking out the FairPlay/Good Conduct Tro-phy.

Te Awamutu College9A were another stand-out team. This talented, young side won the A3grade final against TASGuthrie Bowron 36-21.

It takes a large band ofhard working, dedicatedadministrators for anysporting organisation asbig as Te AwamutuNetball to operatesmoothly.

This year’s Presi-dent’s Trophy went toone of those tirelessworkers, RaewynMcDonnell.

Umpires are anothervital cog in the successstory of Te AwamutuNetball.

The ‘outstandingachievement’ umpiringaward went to Ceri Hills, one of Te Awamutu’sfour New Zealand quali-fied whistlers.

Most improved andmost dedicated umpireswere Kylie Edwards and

Corrina Heke respec-tively.

Top junior umpirewas Chicayla Scholes-Daysh.

‘‘It is a Speedway New Zealandinitiative to boost the ranks ofpossible world solo champions, building on the wonderful legacyestablished by the likes of IvanMauger, Barry Briggs and RonnieMoore in the 1960s and 1970s.’’

Barry Free, who started racingsolos at Kihikihi as a 16-year-oldin 1974, was one of three solo bikecompetitors at Sunday’s WinterSlam meeting.

The trio of Aucklanders wereinvited to check out the speciallybuilt bike track, yet to haveimprovements made to it.

Free, now in his 50s,commented that he couldn’t resistthe opportunity to once again dustthe cobwebs off his bike. He dulywent out and won the first race.

By the time he races again atKihikihi, concrete pole lines willhave been installed next month. Abrand new racing surface for thesolos and sidecars will have beenlaid, too, combining lime crusherdust and clay to provide thenecessary firm base for goodmotorcycle and sidecar racing.

Campbell reports that the clubis in for a bumper season, highlighted by staging the NewZealand Super Stocks on Anni-versary Weekend, late January

2010.The season opening meeting on

November 5 will again feature thecrowd pleasing fireworks display.

The Winter Slam meetingattracted six classes of machinery, plus a handful of demolition derbyvehicles.

Money raised will

help fund the purchase ofjunior readers forHangatiki School inOtorohanga.
