eooo SHOW WANTCircus Vargas played here

at National City (Calif) April21-22 and Cliff Vargas has done aterrific job of improving hiscircus. Everything about the showis first class from the full co-lor program book, to the perform-ance, neat prop crew and the biggleaming concession wagon.

One of the big features onthe show is that 12 piece band, directed by Jim Gibson. It backseach act the way a band shouldand there's plenty of real circusmusic all the way through.

Lighting and costumes aretop notch and it's really greatat night, with lighted props andthe torches used as a finale inthe foot juggling number. Thisbrings oohs and ahhs from the au-dience.

Mike Gorman, who joined af-ter five years with RBBB, keepsthe show moving well and his an-nouncements are all "circus." Aninnovation this year is the useof cordless mikes by the Klemen-t^s, who keep up a running con-1 ersation during their bicyclenumber.

Although there are only two]clowns they do some excellentwork, which the audience enjoys.A special note should be made oftheir "slow motion" dog - that'sreal training!

TROUBLED TOUR (Continued)

heat. The disturbance took tenminutes to quell. The female wasremoved from the act. The nextday, a second female came in heatand after the four female laydowntrick, Magana had difficulty get-ting the cats back to their ped-estals. During this confusion Ar-lo charged. An ammonia stick wasignored by the enraged cat andthe chair knocked from the train-er's hand, who was then backedinto a corner away from the cagedoor. Poles pushed through thebars did nothing to halt the cat'sprogress and finally Nick Bengorgrabbed a gun, fired it, and EdRussell released the valve on afire extinguisher. "I practicallyshoved it down his throat," hesaid.

Magana*s only escape routewas up the side of the cage, which had no net, and over thetop. He started to climb, feltthe lion's mouth close over hisupper right thigh and bite in. Hewas pulled to the ground, but, ashe fell, the lion released itsjaws and men outside the cagewere able to push the cat backwith long poles and sticks. Ma-gana crawled to the door, washelped out, and immediately rush-ed to the hospital.

Magana's injuries are so se-vere it appears doubtful he willfinish the spring tour. A novice,.Jeff Wagner, is currently workingthe four females, and Rick Brownis working one of the three ele-

phants. Several men have attempt-ed to work the bulls, but havebeen knocked flat for their ef-forts.

The current program is high-lighted by the droll antics ofUncle Heavy's Pork Chop Revue, acomedy pig act that instantlyappeals to the audience, and bythe perennial Los Latinos wireact. The program's second half idthe strongest, bolstered by theFlying €egaras, the Latinos, anda good-looking three ring displayof roly boly.

Cliff's Moresi's band (fivemen) is impressive and soundsgood. Ed Russell, side show man-ager in the past, has turned thetask over to Jim Steinmetz. Onthe inside are a belly-dancer,anelephant skin boy, fire eater, sword box and electric chair.

Chapter Eight"Trapeze, Part Three"

THE BIG MOMENT in 'Trapeze" had come. It was the daythey were to shoot the Triple Somersault.

The picture was already behind schedule by severalmonths and way over its original budget of one and a half milliondollars. But worse than that, Cirque Bouglione was due to moveinto the building and this sequence could not be shot at the Par-is studios, where the company eventually moved to finish production

"Nerves were tight again,"says Fay. "It was like the "Fall"sequence all over and THAT made memore nervous than I would havebeen normally."

"And the lights!" Rosie ex-claims. 'XJod, but it was hot inthat building."

'The morning of the shootingthey moved the extras into the au-dience. The building was packed.

"That made it hotter," saysFay. "And it was warm outsidewhich didn't help."

They began to film. Fay mis-sed the first triple. They wipedhim off, fixed his make-up. Hewent up again. He missed thesecond.

Now the crew was getting ner-vous.

"I missed seven triples in arow," says Fay.

"Shall we call it a day,Fay?" asked Burt, Sir Carol Reedbehind him.

"No....let me try one more."

Fay climbed to the pedestalboard.

"Action!" called Reed.

Rosie crossed her fingers, sitting as part of the "audience."

Willie Kraus (as Gina) drop-ped the rise. Fay (as Tony) swungout and, on the eighth try, EddieWard (as Burt) caught the perfecttriple somersault.

"Cut and print!" shouted SirCarol Reed.

"And those Europeans, whohadn't seen a triple since thelate Alfredo Codona, rose in theirseats and gave me a standing ova-tion that lasted a FULL FIFTEENMINUTES!"

Fay, with tears streamingdown his cheeks, stood helplesslyon the pedestal board while theapplause grew and grew until itsounded like hundreds of wildstallions running on the old roofof Cirque- D'Hiver.

Chapter Eight

When Fay reached the groundBurt came up and shook his hand.

"I just want you to know," he said"that whatever success comes ofthis picture, we owe it all toyou."

Months later Burt said almostthe same words in a letter Fay re-ceived. TRAPEZE had been in gener-al release and had grossed wellover eleven million dollars bythat time.

"....we are so happy with theresults," wrote Burt Lancaster."But without you this picturecould never have been made."

While Fay was winding upTRAPEZE in Paris he heard from TedDeWayne. The much heralded Disney-land was opening in November inAnaheim, California. Would Fay beinterested in appearing in a spec-ial circus there?

He was, and he did.
