1. purposeThe Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, including dashboards, views, alerts, and metrics that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of their Xen® resources.

2. introduction to the Management packThe Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop & XenApp is an embedded adapter for VMware vRealize Operations. It retrieves data from XenDesktop and XenApp to monitor, manage, and collect key performance metrics regarding Xen®-specific resources such as Applications, Desktops, and Delivery Groups.

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects Data

During each data collection cycle, the Management Pack queries the OpenData API of a Delivery Controller in a Site to obtain data regarding Xen® resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. For information about changing the collection interval, refer to the Configuring the Properties File section in the accompanying Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations Management Pack for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp Installation and Configuration Guide.

The Management Pack supports either Auto Discovery or manual discovery of resources. When you enable Auto Discovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vRealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vRealize Operations, the Management Pack creates the resource kind.

2.2 Data the Management Pack Collects

The Management Pack can collect performance, health, availability, and capacity data for a Xen® Site and its related resources.

2.3 Inventory Trees (Traversal Specs)

The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vROps allows you to easily navigate your XenDesktop/XenApp environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resource kinds and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues. The Management Pack provides the following traversal specs:

• Citrix XenDesktop Site to Microsoft SQL Server Database• Citrix XenDesktop VDA to EP Ops Agent (vROPs 6.1 only)

3. DashboardsDashboards are the primary user interface that allow the user to monitor and troubleshoot Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp data problems in vRealize Operations.

3.1 XenDesktop Overview

This dashboard displays heat maps depicting the overall health of each resource kind in your Xen® environment, enabling admins to efficiently monitor their environment at-a-glance. Figure 3: XenDesktop Overview Dashboard


3.2 Relationships Overview

This dashboard displays the relationships within your Xen® infrastructure. By selecting a Xen® resource within the XenDesktop Selector widget on the left, you can quickly view additional details about its interrelationships as well as key health and performance indicators.

3.3 Site Overview

This dashbord provides an overview of the selected Xen® Site, including top site alerts, KPIs, session metrics, and resource counts.

3.4 Application Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about each Xen® Application being utilized within your Xen® environment. Select an Application from the widget on the left to view summaries about its instances, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.5 Catalog Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about each Xen® Catalog resource. Select a Catalog from the widget on the left to view summaries of its average load indices, session counts, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.6 Delivery Group Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about each Xen® Delivery Group resource, including summaries of its average load indices, session counts, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.7 Desktop Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about the Desktop instances being utilized within specific delivery groups in your Xen® environment. Select a Desktop from the widget on the left to view summaries of its instances, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.8 Hypervisor Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about your Xen® Hypervisor resource(s), including summaries regarding its load indices, session counts, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.9 Site Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about your Xen® Site, including counts of all active resources within the site and summaries of its average load indices, session counts, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.10 VDA Machine Details

This dashboard provides details and KPIs about each VDA Machine resource in your Xen® environment. Select a VDA machine from the widget on the left to view summaries regarding each machine’s load indices, session counts, session connection state counts, and connections.

3.11 VDA VM Mashup

This dashboard enables a comparison view of VDA Machines and associated Virtual Machines and Datastores according to key performance metrics.

3.12 User and Session Details

This dashboard provides a detailed break-down of Users and Sessions along with the XenDesktop/XenApp and VMware resources they are related to.

NOTE: Session Latency metrics are only available from a Windows collector.

To populate the dashboard, you must run the Find Users and Sessions action as follows:

1. Select an adapter instance in the XenDesktop Adapter Selector widget.

2. Click the gear ( ) drop-down menu and select the Find Users and Sessions action.

3. In the dialog that appears, enter the number of hours in the past you’d like to search, along with any additional parameters.

NOTE: For the Inactive Users action, the resources that are returned are not be displayed in this (or any other) dashboard. They can be seen in the “Administration/Inventory Explorer.” In addition, be aware that when running XenDesktop Actions on a vROps 6.1 environment, it is possible that a crash will occur. Refer to section 9.4, Issues with Running XenDesktop Actions in vROps 6.1, for instructions on fixing this issue.

4. ViewsThe Management Pack creates custom views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics across an entire Xen® environment. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > Citrix XenDesktop > XenDesktop Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected.

5. reportsThe Management Pack contains contains the following custom report(s) that you can export and easily share with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > Citrix XenDesktop > XenDesktop Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

The available report for that resource are listed and can be selected. To run a selected report, click the Run Template icon ( ).

6. tagsTo further customize how your Management Pack dashboards are displayed, four tags are currently available for filtering by Xen® machines hosted on VMware VMs, Datastores, Host Systems, or Server OS Machines:

• VMware VMs hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

• VMware Datastores hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

• VMware Host Systems hosting: Citrix XenDesktop Machines

• XenDesktop Server OS Machines

To select a tag, perform the following steps:

NOTE: Depending on the dashboard, the steps for selecting a tag may vary slightly.

1. Click on the Content navigation shortcut ( ).2. Click on the Dashboards view in the navigation pane.3. Select Edit ( ) on the Citrix XenDesktop widget.4. Select Edit Widget ( ) for the widget you want to edit.5. Expand the XenDesktop Container option.6. Select the desired tag and click Save.

REPORT DESCRIPTION

Citrix XenDesktop Site Connection Summary by VDA

Provides a trend view that displays the Average Log On Duration for a given Site and a list view containing the Average Log On Duration and Average Authentication Duration by VDA

Citrix XenDesktop Users to Desktops Provides a list view of users and their associated desktops.


7. alertsThe Management Pack pulls events from XenDesktop/XenApp and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts. The critical levels of each alert are closely mapped from XenDesktop/XenApp to vROps.

9. troubleshooting the Management packKnown troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack. This section includes the following topics:

9.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance

Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vRealize Operations. Refer to section 9.2, Testing Connection Failures.

• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vRealize Operations.

• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section 9.3, Viewing System Log Files, for details.

9.2 Testing Connection Failures

When clicking on Test Connection, the following connection errors are possible.

9.2.1 Bad OData host name

Check to ensure the host name provided is correct.

9.2.2 Bad OData user name/password

Check to ensure the OData username and password was entered correctly.

9.2.3 Bad vRealize Operations user name/password

Check to ensure the vRealize Operations user name and password was entered correctly.

9.3 Viewing System Log Files

You can check for Management Pack errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in vRealize Operations, or in an external log viewer.

The log files are in the /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/user/log/adapters/XenDesktopAdapter folder. The collector log files are in the /usr/lib/vmware-vcops/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.

You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator -> Support -> Logs -> Select COLLECTOR folder -> Select Edit Properties icon -> Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.

9.4 Issues with Running XenDesktop Actions in vROps 6.1

When running XenDesktop Actions on a vROps 6.1 environment, it is possible that a crash will occur. The action(s) will show a “Failed” status and provide a log with a message similar to:

sun.reflect.annotation.TypeNotPresentExceptionProxy

If this happens, the user will have to modify a file on their vROps system. Below are instructions on how to modify the file for Windows and Linux operating systems.

Linux:1. SSH into the box as root.2. Navigate to $ALIVE_BASE/user/conf/collector.3. Open wrapper.conf in a text editor.4. Add this line: wrapper.java.classpath.37=%ALIVE_BASE%/common/lib/validation-api- 1.0.0.GA.jar to the bottom of the Java Class path section.5. Restart the box in order to reload java environment.

windows:1. Remote Desktop Into Box2. Navigate to C:\vmware\vrealize-operations\vmware-vcops\user\conf\collector3. Open wrapper.conf in a text editor4.
