PARK BOARD MINUTESJanuary 4, 2016
PRESENT: Jim Church, Josh Lydon, Kris Brieske, Kevin Schmitz, Carlos Holcomb, Tom BrownABSENT: Wil CalkinsAtso PRESENT: Brad Gilbertson, Mark sund, Ted Radde, Ryan Hutson, Ed Lukasek, John McDonald,Mayor Button, Renae Caldwell, Kevin Riley, pagee Finley,s fiance,
Chairman Jim Church called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m
A motion was made by Josh Lydon and seconded by Tom Brown to approve the consent Agendaconsisting of minutes from the December 7, 2ol5 meeting, park & Rec Director,s monthly report forJanuary and monthly bills for December. Motion carried 6-0.
Brad is requesting that the City break the contract with Pagee Finley, the gymnastic instructor. At thetime that the contract was set up, she was working 40 plus hours a week and was involved with a lot ofspecial events. Now she is asking others to fill in for her so she is able to do other things, has decreasedher number of hours and has had planned no specialevents. The contract states that there has to be a30 day notice to break the contract. Brad is looking for direction from the Board in case pagee decidesnot to continue the 30 days, would we need to hire out this position? Brad has been actively looking forcoaches at this time. A motion was made by Kevin schmitz and seconded by Josh Lydon to give pageFinley the 30 day notice to break the contract with the City. Motion carried 6-0.
The Board looked at more detailed figures for purchasing a fleet of 30 golf carts along with what type ofcarts they want and also the color. The two companies looked at were from Premier Golf & Utility andYamaha Golf & Utility. There currently are funds in the golf course fund for this purchase but we will stilltry to negotiate for a lower cost if we pay with cash. A motion was made by Kevin schmitz andseconded byTom Brown to approve the purchase of30 2016 club car carts in navy blue with beigetops and windshield for up to S90,000 after trade-ins. Motion carried 6-0.
Carlos wanted to discuss the parking situation in front ofthe Boy's and Girl's Club in regard to safety.lf parents are picking up their kids in front of the club instead of the parking spaces, kids could crossbetween the cars, people parked in front can't back out and it could be danBerous. Brad will approachthe boy's and girl's club directors to see if they can help in getting the word out regarding the parking. The City can paint yellow markings in the crossing area or put up some type of signage.
An item mentioned for future consideration was:The energy study done by Bill Bailey. By implementing some of the recommendations, we could see anapproximate $2,000 in savings per year
A motion was made by Kris Erieske and seconded byJosh Lydon to adjourn at 6:50 p.m, Motioncarried 6-0.
Respectfully Submitted,
Julie Ha nson
City Clerk
WrestlingWe are currentlyjust over 100 wrestlers in the program which is about the same number we had last year. .we held our annual Youth wrestlilg tournament on J att. 24 and had a great day of wrestling. we had amuch smaller turnout that we did last year. We feel much of this was bicause West Salem ilso hosted theirwrestling tournament the same weekend. we had 2l I wresters this year which is still a very goodtournament. We made the switch this year to TrackWrestling and had online registration. juJt about halfthe participants pre-registered online with us. We are hoping to eventually onlylllow pre-registration as itspeeds up the process in the morning with getting brackets done and posted foi participants. We have afew changes that we will make for next years tournament to make it iun smoother. Overall it was a greatday and we had a great group of volunteers to help make this event possible.
GymnasticsOur numbers have remained strong again with close to 100 girls participating again this season. We have77 participants in our recreational classes and 2l in our competitive program. The competitive team hasseveral meets in the next month. They have been working hard at practice to perfect thiir routines and wehope_to have a strong showing at the upcoming meets. We are stili looking for some additional gymnasticscoaches. We have found a coach that will be able to help with our competitive team on Wed.
"r,inings. She will not be able to start until March l't. She has coaches with Blue Angels, the YMCA and surnmergymnastics camps. We have had several of our old coaches' return to the team and have hired 3 newcoaches for the season. We should have all the classes covered and will be able to transition smoothlv onFeb. 4rr'when Pagee is done coaching with the program.
ArcheryOur beginning class is full again and we have a nearly I advanced class that is full and the second classwith several openings. I will look at offering 2 beginning classes during this time frame next year as thatseems to be the need for the program.
Parks & Recreation Director's ReportFebruary 1, 2016
Co-Ed Volleyball TournamentWe only received 3 registrations for the Co-Ed tournament this year so I cancelled the tournament.
Fitness Classesclasses are going well and we will staft working on a spring and sumrner sclredule soon. classregistrations remain very strong and the participants are very pleased with the instructors.
Senior ExerciseJoanie continues to lrave a group of around 20-30 seniors each week for class
Adult VolleyballThe adult volleyball season has been running srnooth this season. We are well over half way through theseason and several ofthe leagues have very close races for the top spot. I will be ordering first placeplaques and present them to the winning teams on the last night ofthe season. The officiil has irad a fewdays he missed because ofprior commitments. On those nights the teams have decided to play "call yourown" and we have not had to cancel any nights.
MISC.
The ice rinks have been flooded and we will continue to maintain them as long as the weather cooperates.
We are hiring for pool employees at this time.
We have been working with the Monroe County Extension office with a Strong Wornen course they areoffering. They are using our facility every Wed. and Friday for a class.
AARP will be doing tax preparation for seniors for the next couple months in the facility. They haveutilized our space for several years.
Golf Course
Ed has been servicing all the rough mowers and has started on the fairway and greens mowers.
We will be workitrg on the energy efficiency projects that were presented by Bill Bailey over the course ofthe winter with hopes of having the majority of thern finished before opening tbis year.
Ryan and I will continue with the marketing ideas we had from last year.
Summer rehire letters will go out within the next 2 weeks.
I will be working with Tom to reschedule his work duties to free up his time for golfcourse projects andhave seasonal workers perform some ofthe daily tasks that Tom doesn,t need to be doing.
