Student Drop off / Pick up

Please remember that the pick up circle drive is a constantly

moving drive. Please DO NOT park or exit your car in the pick up line. If you must exit your car, please park in the lot.

Use the circle drive for children who can independently enter the vehicle on the curb side so that you can continue driving.

This helps most importantly with safety, but also improves the flow of traffic and the ability of busses to enter for pick

up.

Family Circles are Alive and Well!! Our Leonard Family Circles met in November to discuss one of our Leadership Habits called Being Proactive. This life skill asks children (and adults) to think calmly and act responsibly when faced with a situation. Thinking ahead prevents unwanted reactions. Students were shown a demonstration of a shaken pop can (reactive) vs a shaken water bottle (proactive). Our goal is to “be water bottles” as life presents us with different situations. December’s gathering brings us an opportunity to explore Sharpening the Saw, another one of the Leadership Habits. This focuses on maintaining healthy eating, sleeping and life style choices. We will also show our compassion for others by creating craft projects for senior citizens within the Troy community. Our goal is to be healthy on the inside and out.

News and Notes

Thank you to every family that participated in the Believe

Fundraiser last month! Together we exceeded our expectations and raised just over $4,000 for the PTO. This will be used to

provide field trip busing, assemblies, school supplies and much more for our little Leopards!

Just a reminder to keep clipping those Box Tops! Our current contest runs through December 4th. The top 5 classrooms will

win free popcorn and each classroom that collects at least 600 Box Tops will win a Pajama Day!

The next PTO meeting is our holiday potluck and will be held on

Tuesday, December 15th at noon in the LGI. All Leonard parents

are invited and encouraged to attend.

Bagels sales will continue every Wednesday morning for .75 cents each.

If you haven't done so already, please be sure to join the new Leonard PTO Facebook page to receive important updates and

messages so that you can be informed as to how you can help and how your fundraising dollars are being spent! The link to join is

Holiday Gift Shop December 7-11, 2015

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Your child is invited to attend our upcoming Holiday Gift Shop. It will be held from December 7-11, during school hours. Please see the

class schedules on the VolunteerSpot website to know when your child’s class will be attending. You may or may not want to be there

when they are picking out that special gift for you! We are very excited about this program. It is a great learning

experience and a service to the students and parents. The Holiday Gift Shop is an opportunity for your child to purchase their own

special holiday gifts for family and friends. The gifts will be moderately priced. There will be a selection of great items for everyone, such as popular jewelry, licensed sports and gift items.

Adult volunteers play a vital role in the success of the Holiday Gift

Shop. PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO HELP WITH THE SET UP AND OPERATION OF THE SHOP! We realize that the holiday season is a busy time for everyone, but we would appreciate your

support.

*All volunteers in the Troy School District are required to fill out a background check form prior to volunteering at school events. Please go to the office and fill out a form and give it

to the office staff if you have not already done so for the 2015/2016 school year.*

Please sign up for Holiday Gift Shop 2015!

Here's how it works in 3 easy steps: 1. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot:

http://vols.pt/rQDC5d

2. Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on VolunteerSpot)

3. Sign up! Choose your spots - VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Thank you for your help and hope to see you at the Holiday Gift Shop!

Wondrous Words--Exploring Words and Their Parts

We have been tuning into interesting words when we read, showing how they are

spelled, and discussing their meaning. Now it’s time to explore their parts. Even adults find pleasure in doing the following activities. So even if your child is a voracious reader

and writer, they can find joy in doing the following activities. The best part is that you can play these games whenever--in the car, waiting for dinner to cook, or when you are

waiting in line at the store! It’s easy once we get the hang of it. Basically, you are just saying words slowly to hear their parts and sounds. Have fun with words!

Clap syllables in words. Start with family names. Who has the most claps? Find

more words to match the number of claps.

o Sun = 1 clap

o Pizza = 2 claps

o Umbrella = 3 claps

o Watermelon = 4 claps

o Hippopotamus = 5 claps

Know that some words are made up of 2 smaller words. Practice finding

“compound words” in speech or when you read.

o Some examples are: flashlight, Batman, toothbrush, sailboat, somewhere,

into

Listen for the smaller sounds in words.

o Cow /c/ /ow/, me /m/ /ee/, up /u/ /p/, shoe /sh/ /oo/ all have 2 sounds

o Cat /c/ /a/ /t/, horse /h/ /or/ /s/, and ship /sh/ /i/ /p/ all have 3 sounds

o Baby /b/ /a/ /b/ /ee/, frog /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/, jump /j/ /u/ /m/ /p/ all have 4

sounds

Listen for similar parts in words. Talk about prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Find

big words when you read and look for the parts. Write words on cards, cut them

up by syllable, and see if you can put them back together or make new words.

o Prefixes: unhappy, unzip, unreal, undo

o Suffixes: happily, quickly, really, slowly

o Roots: television, teleport, telephone

Some large words to take apart: rectangular, temperature, worldliness, personality,

introduction, unimaginable, characterization, intermission, expression, imaginary
