Lent A Season of Fasting

Last week I focused my article on the Lenten discipline of prayer As we enter the 2nd Week of Lent I will focus on the discipline of Fasting I must confess that the disci-pline of fasting is where I need the most work I like an occasional beer with some chips or pretzels and every year I seem to fall short of my Lenten fasting resolution Donrsquot get me wrong I recognize the importance of fasting Sacred Scripture is full of references to the discipline in both the Old and New Testaments Jesus Himself fasted and in the Gospel of Matthew our Lord teaches the disciples how to fast (ldquoDo not look gloomy like the hypocrites but look clean and refreshedrdquo Matt616-18) Feeling guilty I spoke to a priest friend about my fasting shortcomings He wisely advised me to change the way I look at fasting I was reminded that fasting is not spiritual dieting Fasting is a positive act he counseled that is meant to deepen my relationship with God If 40 days seems too long to give something up maybe you can fast from something for 1 week or even 1 day If you do make it intentional and offer that small sacrifice in praise and thanksgiving to God For example I will not have a glass or wine this week or even today Or I will refrain from a sweet treat or a snack between meals for a day Again offer that up in prayer for a special intention A question we can all ask ourselves this week is this ldquowhat is keeping me from deepening my relationship with Godrdquo Here is a thought for you is there too much noise in your life Does the noise prevent you from prayer and from listening to the Lord Noise and instant communication hits us from all directions So do you think you can fast from television radio the internet Facebook Snapchat or Instagram this week If not the whole week then maybe one day or even a few hours Can you en-courage your children to put down their phone and turn off the computer and television With the extra time from the silence of the noise you can pray a rosary join the Gospel Challenge or purchase a good spiritual book What is the purpose of your noise fast To deepen your relationship with God and to listen to the Lord Where is Jesus calling you How can you better serve Him How can you share His love How can you be a better person I pray that whatever type of fast you chose the discipline will lead you closer to Jesus God Bless you and your family

It is easy to say ldquoHere I am Lordrdquo when we are kneeling in church But how easy is it to say ldquoHere I am Lordrdquo when a neighbor needs our help when we are invited to join a parish ministry or when we are asked to provide financial support Often times we are called when itrsquos not convenient for us Stewardship is not always easy There will be times when it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable

Dear Sacred Heart Parish Family Ive been volunteering administering the Moderna Vaccine at my medical school in Stratford It is very well organized- offering another opportunity to receive the Covid Vaccina-tion The Center schedules appointments for a week at a time I want to encourage you all to seek appointments at this site if you are still having difficulty getting one The school is on Laurel Rd in Stratford just off the White Horse Pike Schedule at this website wwwrowanmedicinecomvaccine If you are having difficulty getting an appointment you can sign up for the daily Standby List If there are No Shows you will be called to come in that day to receive the vaccination Hope this information is useful Be patient and please con-tinue to follow the public health guidelines according to the CDC- wearing masks and social distancing-even after receiv-ing the vaccine At this point even though Im fully vaccinat-ed Im wearing two masks due to great concern about the Covid variants I also want to advise everyone that if you choose to dine inside or even outside please wear your mask as much as possible ie while ordering food or if you are not sipping on a beverage or eating food This is to protect your-self and others -especially your server Being seated at a res-taurant table inside or outdoors does not entitle us to not wear masks Thank you so much for your consideration of these im-portant matters Stay safe and well Peace Lesly DAmbola DO

Dear Sacred Heart Parish Family Ive been volunteering administering the Moderna Vaccine at my medical school in Stratford It is very well organized- offering another opportunity to receive the Covid Vaccina-tion The Center schedules appointments for a week at a time I want to encourage you all to seek appointments at this site if you are still having difficulty getting one The school is on Laurel Rd in Stratford just off the White Horse Pike Schedule at this website wwwrowanmedicinecomvaccine If you are having difficulty getting an appointment you can sign up for the daily Standby List If there are No Shows you will be called to come in that day to receive the vaccination Hope this information is useful Be patient and please con-tinue to follow the public health guidelines according to the CDC- wearing masks and social distancing-even after receiv-ing the vaccine At this point even though Im fully vaccinat-ed Im wearing two masks due to great concern about the Covid variants I also want to advise everyone that if you choose to dine inside or even outside please wear your mask as much as possible ie while ordering food or if you are not sipping on a beverage or eating food This is to protect your-self and others -especially your server Being seated at a res-taurant table inside or outdoors does not entitle us to not wear masks Thank you so much for your consideration of these im-portant matters Stay safe and well Peace Lesly DAmbola DO

Second Sunday of Lent Today as we hear the story of Jesusrsquo transfiguration we see

clearly the promise of our own transformation in Christ Our

baptism sets before us this glorious workhellipbringing ourselves

and all the world to its ultimate fulfillment

Ashes 2021 Ashes were given out from 730 am to 530 pm at Sacred

Heart Church Fr Vince celebrated the Ash Wednesday Mass

in the Church with 30 people in attendance and 85 people

came in for ashes and one child Fr Vince gave ashes to all

the 82 hybrid students of Sacred Heart School and 20 staff Fr

Vince kept up the tradition of the annual ldquoblack thumbrdquo but

this year it was thumb and finger in order to sprinkle $48680

collected

Thomas J Dunn (1931-2021) Known to us as Clarersquos Tom died on February 16 2021 Clare came home from the hospital on February 11th and Tom came home on February 15th and they were together when he died on the 16th He was 89 Tom was born to the late Anna and Thomas Dunn in Gloucester City NJ on May 16 1931 He lived in Gloucester City most of his life except when he was in the Korean Conflict as a US Marine He was a block operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad He married Clare Hirz 26 years ago Clare took very good care of him all these years Tomrsquos son Michael Timothy Dunn age 51 died on January 27 2014 Tomrsquos Mass of Resurrection was on Wednesday February 24th at St Maryrsquos Church in Gloucester City celebrated by Fr Vincent Guest Barbara and Shauna Dever sang He was bur-ied at Brigadier General William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery Wrightstown NJ Our deepest sympathy to Clare son Jimmy niece Patricia and her spouse Joe DiPietro and all their family May he rest in peace Many thanks to Kathy Hainsworth Michelle DeBernardino Carolyn Cabrera Susan Cedrone and Samaritan especially the IPU staff in Mt Holly

In Celebration of National Black History Month this week Sacred Heart Parish highlights

Venerable Pierre Toussaint Venerable Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853) was born in Haiti and brought to New York City as a slave He died a free man a renowned businessman and one of New York Cityrsquos most well-known Catholics credited by many with being the father of Catholic Charities in New York He generously assisted blacks and whites in need He took care of his salve masterrsquos widow during her illness until her death He and his wife opened their home to orphans and educated them When urged to retire and enjoy the wealth he had accumulat-ed Pierre responded ldquoI have enough for myself but if I stop working I have not enough for othersrdquo

Sister Thea Bowman

Born December 29 1937 in Yazoo City Mississip-pi Thea was reared as a Protestant until at age nine when she asked her parents if she could become Catholic Gifted with a brilliant mind beautiful voice and

dynamic personality Sister Thea shared the message of Godrsquos love through a teaching career After 16 years of teaching at the elementary secondary and university level the Bishop of Jack-son Mississippi invited her to become the consultant for inter-cultural awareness In her role as consultant Sister Thea an African American gave presentations across the country lively gatherings that combined singing gospel preaching prayer and storytelling Her programs were directed to break down racial and cultural barriers She encouraged people to communicate with one an-other so that they could understand other cultures and races In 1984 Sister Thea was diagnosed with breast cancer She prayed ldquoto live until I dierdquo Her prayer was answered and Thea continued her gatherings seated in a wheelchair In 1989 the US Bishops invited her to be a key speaker at their conference on Black Catholics At the end of the meeting at Thearsquos invitation the bishops stood and sang ldquoWe Shall Overcomerdquo with gusto Thea lived a full life She fought evil especially prejudice suspicion hatred and things that drive people apart She fought for God and Godrsquos people until her death in 1990

La semana pasada centreacute mi artiacuteculo en la disciplina de la oracioacuten en Cuaresma Al en-trar en la segunda semana de Cuaresma me enfocareacute en la disciplina del ayuno Debo confesar que la disciplina del ayuno es donde maacutes trabajo necesito Me gusta una cerve-za ocasional con algunas papas fritas o pretzels y cada antildeo parece que no cumplo con mi resolucioacuten de ayuno de Cuaresma No me malinterpretes reconozco la importancia del ayuno La Sagrada Escritura estaacute llena de referencias a la disciplina tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento Jesuacutes mismo ayunoacute y en el Evangelio de Mateo nuestro Sentildeor ensentildea a los disciacutepulos coacutemo ayunar (ldquoNo parezcas sombriacuteo como los hipoacutecritas sino luce limpio y renovadordquo Mateo 6 16-18) Sintieacutendome culpable hableacute con un amigo sacerdote sobre mis deficiencias en el ayuno Sabiamente me aconsejoacute que cam-biara mi forma de ver el ayuno iexclSe me recordoacute que el ayuno no es una dieta espiritual El ayuno es un acto positivo aconsejoacute que estaacute destinado a profundizar mi relacioacuten con Dios Si 40 diacuteas parece demasiado tiempo para renunciar a algo tal vez puedas ayunar de algo durante 1 semana o incluso 1 diacutea Si lo hace haacutegalo intencional y ofrezca ese pequentildeo sacrificio en alabanza y accioacuten de gracias a Dios Por ejemplo no tomareacute una copa de vino esta semana ni siquiera hoy O me abstendreacute de un dulce o un refrigerio entre comidas durante un diacutea Nuevamente ofrezca eso en oracioacuten por una intencioacuten es-pecial Una pregunta que todos podemos hacernos esta semana es esta ldquoiquestQueacute me impide pro-fundizar mi relacioacuten con Diosrdquo Aquiacute tienes un pensamiento iquesthay demasiado ruido en tu vida iquestEl ruido te impide orar y escuchar al Sentildeor El ruido y la comunicacioacuten instan-taacutenea nos llegan de todas direcciones Entonces iquestcrees que puedes ayunar de la tele-visioacuten del radio del internet de Facebook de Snapchat o de Instagram esta semana Si no toda la semana iquesttal vez un diacutea o incluso algunas horas iquestPuede animar a sus hijos a dejar el teleacutefono y apagar la computadora y la televisioacuten Con el tiempo extra del si-lencio del ruido puede rezar un rosario unirse al Desafiacuteo del Evangelio o comprar un buen libro espiritual iquestCuaacutel es el propoacutesito de tu ayuno de ruido Profundizar tu relacioacuten con Dios y escuchar al Sentildeor iquestA doacutende te estaacute llamando Jesuacutes iquestCoacutemo puedes servirle mejor iquestCoacutemo puedes compartir tu amor iquestCoacutemo puedes ser una mejor persona Oro para que cual sea el tipo de ayuno que elijas la disciplina te acercaraacute maacutes a Jesuacutes

La semana pasada centreacute mi artiacuteculo en la disciplina de la oracioacuten en Cuaresma Al en-trar en la segunda semana de Cuaresma me enfocareacute en la disciplina del ayuno Debo confesar que la disciplina del ayuno es donde maacutes trabajo necesito Me gusta una cerve-za ocasional con algunas papas fritas o pretzels y cada antildeo parece que no cumplo con mi resolucioacuten de ayuno de Cuaresma No me malinterpretes reconozco la importancia del ayuno La Sagrada Escritura estaacute llena de referencias a la disciplina tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento Jesuacutes mismo ayunoacute y en el Evangelio de Mateo nuestro Sentildeor ensentildea a los disciacutepulos coacutemo ayunar (ldquoNo parezcas sombriacuteo como los hipoacutecritas sino luce limpio y renovadordquo Mateo 6 16-18) Sintieacutendome culpable hableacute con un amigo sacerdote sobre mis deficiencias en el ayuno Sabiamente me aconsejoacute que cam-biara mi forma de ver el ayuno iexclSe me recordoacute que el ayuno no es una dieta espiritual El ayuno es un acto positivo aconsejoacute que estaacute destinado a profundizar mi relacioacuten con Dios Si 40 diacuteas parece demasiado tiempo para renunciar a algo tal vez puedas ayunar de algo durante 1 semana o incluso 1 diacutea Si lo hace haacutegalo intencional y ofrezca ese pequentildeo sacrificio en alabanza y accioacuten de gracias a Dios Por ejemplo no tomareacute una copa de vino esta semana ni siquiera hoy O me abstendreacute de un dulce o un refrigerio entre comidas durante un diacutea Nuevamente ofrezca eso en oracioacuten por una intencioacuten es-pecial Una pregunta que todos podemos hacernos esta semana es esta ldquoiquestQueacute me impide pro-fundizar mi relacioacuten con Diosrdquo Aquiacute tienes un pensamiento iquesthay demasiado ruido en tu vida iquestEl ruido te impide orar y escuchar al Sentildeor El ruido y la comunicacioacuten instan-taacutenea nos llegan de todas direcciones Entonces iquestcrees que puedes ayunar de la tele-visioacuten del radio del internet de Facebook de Snapchat o de Instagram esta semana Si no toda la semana iquesttal vez un diacutea o incluso algunas horas iquestPuede animar a sus hijos a dejar el teleacutefono y apagar la computadora y la televisioacuten Con el tiempo extra del si-lencio del ruido puede rezar un rosario unirse al Desafiacuteo del Evangelio o comprar un buen libro espiritual iquestCuaacutel es el propoacutesito de tu ayuno de ruido Profundizar tu relacioacuten con Dios y escuchar al Sentildeor iquestA doacutende te estaacute llamando Jesuacutes iquestCoacutemo puedes servirle mejor iquestCoacutemo puedes compartir tu amor iquestCoacutemo puedes ser una mejor persona Oro para que cual sea el tipo de ayuno que elijas la disciplina te acercaraacute maacutes a Jesuacutes
