The Amelia varsity boys basket-ball squad will be doing some seri-ous regrouping this season withthe return of just two lettermen.

Eight seniors graduated from ateam that was 5-15 regular seasonand 2-8 (fifth place) in theSouthern Buckeye ConferenceAmerican (SBC-A) Division ayear ago. One of the seniors wasTanner Owens, a conference all-star.

Craig Mazzaro returns as thehead coach at his alma mater afterseveral years away from the posi-tion of which he was very success-ful his first term as the head coach.

“We’re trying to establish agood work ethic especially withour defense and learning and will-ing to play hard,” he said.

“We’re very young and veryinexperienced. We are having a lotof competition for the startingpositions and playing time.”

Sophomore forward and centerTommy Hacker and sophomoreguard Trevor Simon are the mostexperienced Barons back in thefold. Others uniformed in Blueand White who are coming alongwell are junior forward MichaelCrowder, junior guard RickyMoeves, and junior forward DaleLuginbuhl.

“It’s going to be a challengingseason for us, but its good to beback working with a good groupof kids,” Mazzaro said.

In their second season of com-petition in the Southern BuckeyeConference American (SBC-A) Division, Amelia head coach

Tara Kaiser feels her charges willsurely advance from last year’s 8-12 overall regular season markand 4-7 (tied for fifth place) in theleague.The Barons return exactly one-

half of the eight players whoearned varsity letters from a sea-son ago. Among the returnees aresenior guard Kymmy Simon andsenior guard and forward MeganMentzel who earned all-confer-ence recognition last year.Kaiser pointed out her charges

have “speed, athleticism, desire,and effort.” But the Blue andWhite has a shortage of height.Amelia will get good perfor-

mances on the hardwood from“the experienced” Simon andMentzel. Kaiser noted the “goodinstinctive play” from junior for-ward Cassidy Bailey, junior for-ward Danielle Lehn, and the “spir-ited play” of senior forwardAlanna Whited as examples ofothers of her team she expects tohave good season.From the Amelia viewpoint,

Western Brown will be tough in itsdefense of the SBC-A crown itwon a year ago. “They’ll be reallycompetitive and Goshen will beone of the best teams in theleague. . . “We’ll be tough. I don’t think

anybody can compete with oursize. We have speed and good ath-leticism, too. We have a strongsenior class. We’re all going towork hard. The underclassmenwill play hard and keep the pres-sure to play hard on the seniors.”

It should be an interesting varsi-ty girls basketball season atBethel-Tate High School.The Tigers have quickness to

toughen their rugged defense forthis campaign, but good overallteam size does not really exist.Last year the Red and Gray was

13-7 overall regular season and 6-4 and second in the SouthernBuckeye Conference AmericanDivision (SBC-A) race.Head coach Dave Fallis wel-

comes the return of four of the sixplayers he lettered a year ago froma tough (SBC-A) championshipchase.“Definitely our defense will be

a strength and we have good over-all team speed,” he said. But headded that his charges are “under-sized. We are not a tall team. . . “We are going to need our speed

and defense to lead us to overcom-ing our lack of size.”The Red and Gray has two

guard play this year,” saidMcMonigle. “This team is a lotmore experience this year overall.They’re playing hard defensively,too. There’s a lot of pride in thisteam. . . “We’re going to have to work

on our play in the post, though.We have inexperience.”McMonigle, who was a former

basketball all-star at NewRichmond High and ClermontCollege, feels Amelia and WesternBrown will be the teams to beat inthe Southern Buckeye American.He feels he has some talented

record was 8-12 and the Blue andGold was 4-6 and in fourth placein the SBC-A.He sees the return of four letter

earners from a year ago. Six whoearned letters last year are notcoming back.Among the graduated players

are SBC-A all-star Alexis Schmidtand Cydney Hill.“We’ve got big girls down low

and that will make us strong underthe basket and can give us controlof the boards,” said Northeastern’shead coach.He added, “We lack experience.

We have only two players with alot of varsity experience.”The taller Rockets expected to

do well on the boards are juniorforward Carly Aselage, senior for-ward Emily Werring, junior for-ward Jessica Kirby, and senior for-ward Spanky Burdsall. Juniorguard Osborn is expected by hercoach to be the CNE mainstay inthe backcourt. “Western Brown has won the

league about the past three yearsso I expect them to be tough againand Bethel should be good, too.New Richmond will be good, too.They have that six (feet) five(inches tall) girl.“We have a tough schedule, but

we can definitely be an improvedteam. We will have to work ongaining experience,” Kreimersaid.

first season as the head coach ofthe Warriors.He said, “This team has a lot of

maturity among the seniors wehave. We have depth and goodguards and speed and quickness,but we have a lot of young playersand we don’t have much size.”The new head coach at Goshen

from last year’s Southern BuckeyeConference American (SBC-A)Division championship squad. Helost all 10 players he lettered.Among the 10 lost are his son,

Nick, Derek Koch, Anthony Voto,and James Achcraft who allearned Southern BuckeyeAmerican all-conference status.“Our team has some good ath-

letes this year and some goodheight, but we have no experience.I have four kids on this year’steam who didn’t even play lastyear,” said coach Wake who wasthe conference’s coach of the yearhaving guided the Warriors to a 9-

1 record in the SBC and a 17-3overall regular-season mark.Wake said, “Northeastern and

Bethel lost the most of the bestplayers of the other teams in theleague. From what I saw over thesummer, Amelia looked verygood. They should have a goodyear. After that everything is up inthe air in the league.“In our situation, as we get more

and more experience we’ll get bet-ter and better as the year goesalong,” Wake said.

Glen Este’s Lady Trojans havelost two key senior starters, butcoach Jeff Click expects theteam’s returning starters to be ableto step up and lead the team.Lost to graduation were Jackie

Young, a player Click says wasvery versatile, and Lakin Louiso,who was first team all-league andfinished as one of the best 3-pointshooters in school history.Click says that returning starters

Hannah Carson, Katie Gaskill,and Jessie Brenes will be a key tothe team’s success this season.“We’ve returned three good

starters, so that’s a good thing, butwe’ll have to have some peoplestep and replace them (Louiso andYoung).”Click expects Ashley Keith to

play a big role in this year’s team.“We’re looking for her to step

into the starting rotation and beable to fill the shoes of the peoplewho graduated,” he said.Coach Click said that the Lady

Trojans don’t have really tall play-ers to throw the ball to on theinside, so they will be workingtogether at half-court to createshooting opportunities.“We’re not big, but we have

some good shooters, so we don’tshy away from shooting the ball,”Click said. “The 3-point shot wasone of the things that we did real-ly well last year, and we’re look-ing to do that again.”

Click says that Wilmington isthe hands-down pick to win theleague this year.“They have good players and

good coaching, and they haveeverybody back from last year,”Click said.

Jason Kreimer, head coach ofthe Clermont Northeastern varsitygirls basketball team, expects hischarges to be competitive onceagain in the Southern BuckeyeConference American (SBC-A)Division race.Last year’s regular season

record was 8-12 and the Blue andGold was 4-6 and in fourth placein the SBC-A.He sees the return of four letter

earners from a year ago. Six whoearned letters last year are notcoming back.Among the graduated players

are SBC-A all-star Alexis Schmidtand Cydney Hill.“We’ve got big girls down low

and that will make us strong underthe basket and can give us controlof the boards,” said Northeastern’shead coach.He added, “We lack experience.

We have only two players with alot of varsity experience.”The taller Rockets expected to

do well on the boards are juniorforward Carly Aselage, senior for-ward Emily Werring, junior for-ward Jessica Kirby, and senior for-ward Spanky Burdsall. Juniorguard Osborn is expected by hercoach to be the CNE mainstay inthe backcourt. “Western Brown has won the

league about the past three yearsso I expect them to be tough againand Bethel should be good, too.New Richmond will be good, too.They have that six (feet) five(inches tall) girl.“We have a tough schedule, but

we can definitely be an improvedteam. We will have to work ongaining experience,” Kreimersaid.

The Amelia varsity boys basket-ball squad will be doing some seri-ous regrouping this season withthe return of just two lettermen.

Eight seniors graduated from ateam that was 5-15 regular seasonand 2-8 (fifth place) in theSouthern Buckeye ConferenceAmerican (SBC-A) Division ayear ago. One of the seniors wasTanner Owens, a conference all-star.

Craig Mazzaro returns as thehead coach at his alma mater afterseveral years away from the posi-tion of which he was very success-ful his first term as the head coach.

“We’re trying to establish agood work ethic especially withour defense and learning and will-ing to play hard,” he said.

“We’re very young and veryinexperienced. We are having a lotof competition for the startingpositions and playing time.”

Sophomore forward and centerTommy Hacker and sophomoreguard Trevor Simon are the mostexperienced Barons back in thefold. Others uniformed in Blueand White who are coming alongwell are junior forward MichaelCrowder, junior guard RickyMoeves, and junior forward DaleLuginbuhl.

“It’s going to be a challengingseason for us, but its good to beback working with a good groupof kids,” Mazzaro said.
