Clicker Sentences - SEA Instructions
(Instructions as per App Version as of January 2014 and prior to the release of iOS 7)
With Clicker Sentences, you can quickly build a sentence
for numerous numbers of activities or reasons. With easy
editing the difficulty level on composing the model
sentence is easily modified to meet the student’s needs.
Clicker Sentences is an App that requires setup prior to the student
using it. In order to get the full benefit of the Clicker Sentences
becoming familiar with the App and its features of the App will require
spending time on it.
To get started there are about 10 example sentences that can be used.
As well there is the Learning Grids Online Resource with access to
another 70 pre-made grids.

Getting to Know the App
Locate and open App.
This is the file manager / home screen
showing. The files and folders for iPad
is selected and showing.
If this is not showing tap on
the “Folder” in the upper left
hand corner on all other
screens.
Open “Quick Start” file.
The “White” upper portion of the
screen is where the words (from the
grid) will appear. This is the Document
or Sentence Set.
The lower portion, “Sentence Grid,” is
the words needed to form the
sentences (max 12 words).
Tap on the words to form a sentence.
Then swipe through the 11 sentence
grids for explanations of the buttons.

Quick Starts
Before starting, it is recommended looking through the Quick Start file. As well,
familiarize yourself with the “Buttons, Bells and Whistles” section of this manual.
From Examples
Locate and open App.
Navigate to File Manager and open
Examples folder.
Choose one of the 10 files listed.
The file opens and is ready for the
student to use.
Tap on the grid editor, top
right hand corner, to edit
file.
Tap on Go, top right hand
corner, to return back to
composing mode for student.

From “LearningGrids” Online
Account needs to be set up prior to accessing online grids (see page 11).
Locate and open App.
Navigate to File Manager and select
“LearningGrids” from left hand pane.
Browse for file and select Run Now.
File opens into grid editor. Edit if
desired.
Tap “Go” from upper right hand corner
to enter student composing mode.
You are now in composing mode for the
student to build the sentence.
These dots indicate the number of grids
or sentences in this file.

From Scratch
Creating a sentence set from scratch does require knowledge of the App and the
features and functions. Without getting to know the App by looking through the
Quick Start file and Buttons, Bells and Whistles this quick start method will be
difficult to complete.
Locate and open App.
Navigate to file manager.
From bottom of screen select Add.
Select Sentence Set.
Rename set if desired and select done.
Tap on new set to open into grid editor.
Add sentences and choose model, word
and picture options.
Select Go to go to student composing
mode.

Buttons, Bells and Whistles...
Sentence Set, Grid and Tools
Document / Sentence Set.
Grid Tools.
Sentence Grid or QWERTY Keyboard.
One finger swipe left moves
to next Sentence Grid.
Number of sentecne grids is
indicated by the dots bottom centre of
screen (11 on this example, max 30ish).
This diagram shows the “arrows” to
change the grid (option under settings).
Delete Word – “Backspace” on any keyboard
New Line – “Enter” on any keyboard
Sound Shift – Tap to “pop up” to listen to words. Then tap on the
word to hear it. Tap twice (on word) to hear sentence, 3 times to
hear full document.
Show Grid Keyboard or Keyboard – Switch from Sentence Grid to
QWERTY Keyboard (shown below).
End of Sentence Punctuation – Sentence from that grid is read.

File Manager – Contains sentence sets and
grids on the iPad.
Favourites – Used to mark an unfinished
document or a frequently used sentence set.
Deleting is a quick swipe and tap on delete.
Recently used files can also be opened.
New Document – Create and name a
document.
Emailing and Printing is not setup on the
student’s iPad.
Title – Once created document or sentence
set can only be renamed from the file
manager.
Select edit (top right) and the
file to be renamed. Tap and hold on the
desired file until cursor appears.

Settings
Appearance - The font, font size, document
background and text colour can be changed.
Speech – The voice, speed (recommend slow),
highlighting colour and speak each word or
sentence can be changed.
Accessibility – Changes the way sentence
grids are changed, swipe or arrow buttons.
Show Touches produces a yellow circle to
appear whenever the screen is touched.
Sentence Grid Creator / Editor
Accessing Sentence Grid Editor To access
the editor tap on the icon located upper right
hand corner.
Sentence Grid Editor - The Sentence Grid is
the heart of creating and or editing
sentences. Each sentence can contain up to 12
words and to a maximum of about 30
separate sentences.
Sentence Grid
New Sentence – Type in desired sentence,
maximum 12 words. Include punctuation.
Model Sentence – Select how you would like the
model sentence to appear to the student. Select
from none, On Grid, In Pop-up or Spoken.

Word Order – The word order of the sentence
can also be modified with a simple tap. From
guided (word highlighted) to alphabetical.
Duplicate Words – If the same word is used two
or more times this option will show the word once
or as many times used.
Created Grid Example #1 – This diagram is
basically what the student will see and use. This
example models the sentence in the grid and in
alphabetical order.
Created Grid Example Example #2 – In this
grid the model sentence is in a pop-up, word
order is random and a picture has been added.
Adding Picture – A picture can be added from
taking a picture or the camera role of the iPad.
To delete the picture tap on the “X.”
Edit Sentence Sets – On the left pane you can
edit, delete and re-order sentences.
Delete Sentence - Tap on edit and swipe sentence
then delete it.
Re-Order – To re-order the sentences tap on
edit, select and hold sentence then move it to
desired order in set.
Apply to All – There is a setting, bottom left
hand side, which will apply all the settings to all
the grids.

Learning Grids
Creating Online Account
Registering is free and only needed to be done once.
When first selecting “LearningGrids”
from File Manager screen you will be
asked to sign in or register.
An account could be created using the
student’s email address or the
...speced@rcc... address. The same
account can be used to sign into multiple
devices.
Once singed in the iPad will remain
signed in.
Fill in the information.
An email will be sent to the email
address used. The password received is
to be used to sign in.

Learning Grids - Browse, Download and Run Grids
Once you have registered and signed in select
“LearningGrids” from left hand pane.
On the right displays the available grids. There
are presently 70 grids over 7 pages.
After browsing select Run Now to download
grid.
After downloading the grid opens to the grid
editor window.
Here you can quickly modify the model
sentence, word order, grid colour, picture etc...
Select Go from upper right hand corner.
After selecting Go you enter the composing
section that the student will use.
Select to create and title a new document.
The original document was called “Yes” and the
new document is called “My Animal Noises.”
From the file manager menu these files, the
document and the downloaded grid, are located
in a folder called LearningGrids Downloads.

Managing Files and Folders in File Manager
Editing – To rename, copy, delete etc... tap the
Edit button located in the top right corner.
Once selected Done appears in its place.
Renaming – Select edit then the file or folder.
Tap and hold on the name of file until cursor
appears. Type in desired name.
Deleting – Select edit and the file or folder, as shown
above. From the bottom select delete and confirm
deletion. Select Done from upper right corner when
finished.
Multiple files and or folders can be selected and
deleted at the same time.
Create Folder – Select Add, Folder, change folder name
then Done. See renaming, above, to rename at later
time.
As well folders can be created within folders.
Copy and Move Files – To move files into folders they
need to be copied, pasted in the folder and then delete
the old file.
Select Edit (top right), the file then Copy (from
bottom). Select the destination folder then Paste (from
bottom).
Remember to delete original file
The file Sentence Set 1 was copied and pasted into a
folder called Folder 1.
Select iPad to return to file manager.
