HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER IS AS

CLOSE AS YOUR LIBRARY

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, pro-duced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

NEW CAR TECHNOLOGY MAY TAKE THE WHEEL OUT

OF HUMAN HANDS

ONLINE RESOURCE FOR NEW DRIVERS (NAPS)—Most young people look forward to the day they get their driver’s license, but they should know that with the newfound freedom also comes the responsibility of caring for their car.

To help new drivers become more comfortable with the auto service and repair process, the Car Care Council, the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” campaign promoting regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair, has a variety of online resources including a video entitled “Auto Service and Repair: What to Expect.” It provides valuable information on such topics as finding the right auto repair facility, what happens at the shop and what ques-tions to ask. The video also covers consumer rights and the manufacturer’s warranty.

Also available at www.carcare.org/car-care-guide is a free 80-page booklet in English and in Spanish. The popular guide uses easy-to-understand language and includes descriptions of major vehicle systems, questions to ask a professional technician, and a checklist to remind drivers what vehicle systems need to be maintained and when service or repair should be performed. Special sections on fuel economy and environmental awareness show new driv-ers how to get better gas mileage and make their vehicle more environmentally friendly.

The Council’s online custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service can also help young people remember to include car care in their busy schedules. This free, easy-to-use re-source can be personalized to help make auto care more convenient and economical. There’s also a general service schedule that can be printed and followed. New drivers should be sure to consult their vehicle owner’s manual for specific recommendations by the carmaker.

“Before handing over the keys to new drivers, it’s a good idea to take some time to educate them on the importance of preventative maintenance and how proper vehicle care relates to the reliability and safety of their car,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council.

(NewsUSA) - Google has been making news in recent months for its work in a ground-breaking area: driverless automo-bile technology. A prototype of Google’s new self-driving car -- a two-passenger electric vehicle with buttons to turn the vehicle on and off, but no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal -- was unveiled in May. Without a driver at the wheel, the car is instead guided by a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) rotating sensor on the vehicle’s roof that scan the vehicle’s surroundings to determine its driving route as well as to identify such obstacles as pedestrians, bi-cyclists and other cars.

While Google is widely considered a front-runner in the de-velopment of such advanced automation technology, the major automakers are also getting into the race. Albeit at a more conservative pace, they’re introducing automated fea-tures that perform specific tasks -- such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and collision-avoidance braking -- to their new car models.

According to a recent report by Lux Research, cars with these so-called “Level 2” features are expected to account for 92 percent of a worldwide $87 billion-per-year autonomous car market by 2030. Only 8 percent of the market will go to “Lev-el 3” cars, which would be primarily driven autonomously, but would allow drivers to regain control of the vehicle in an emergency.

In addition, the research firm doesn’t expect any fully auto-mated vehicles on the road by 2030. “We consider that ulti-mate level, Level 4, to be full autonomy, where you just get in and you don’t interact with the car at all,” explained Cos-min Laslau, lead analyst at Lux Research. “And we don’t think that’s coming by 2030. The biggest opportunity that we see will be actually from the

Level 2 features, which are the more conventional advanc-es that we’re already starting to see come onto the mar-ket from higher-end developers.”Hermann Winner, direc-tor and professor of automotive engineering at Germany’s Technische Universit?t Darmstadt, agreed. “We will start with a partially automated car, then a highly automated one,” he said, adding that he doesn’t expect a completely autono-

mous car -- one with no specific limitations with respect to traffic environment or driving speed -- on the market for the next 40 years. “The big chalenge to total automation is get-ting safety approval. Even if you assume the system is ready by 2020, approval is going to be problematic.”

Winner is scheduled to address the challenges facing the development of the driverless car during the panel session “IT Meets the Automobile: Interactive Advanced Vehicle Tec-nologies and Self-Driving Cars” at the ASME AdvancedDesign and Manufacturing Impact Forum in Buffalo, New York.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organiza-tion that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move to-ward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with stu-dents on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while develop-ing a relationship that pro-vides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This pro-gram focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “en-courage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please con-tact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].
