2015 Event Recap The 11th Annual U.S. Bank OC Marathon and Half Marathon saw perfect running weather, thousands of amazing stories and repeat winners from our 10th Anniversary event. Bonnie Keating repeated as winner in the full marathon and Ivan Medina moved up from 1st in last year’s half to win the full marathon. Overall, 21,000 plus were registered in the U.S Bank OC Marathon, Half Marathon, Wahoo’s OC 5k and the Kids Run the OC. Registration numbers pulled back slightly from our anniversary event in the adult races but again we saw an astonishing 13% growth in our Kids Run the OC, topping 6,300 children from 92 schools and agencies. Adding in children that are using the KROC curriculum as their schools preferred exercise program, KROC is serving over 10,000 OC children annually. The Allergan Health and Fitness Expo started off the weekend on Friday and the Kids Run the OC craziness began at 8:30 am on Saturday. On Sunday, the U.S. Bank OC Marathon and Half began with dignitaries from our host cities sending off the runners in Newport Beach heading for an exciting finish at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. The Nutrilite Finish Line Festival and the Ultimate Finish Party again had FlashBack on the main stage with special guest performers from 80’s headlining bands, Bow Wow Wow, When in Rome and the Romantics to name a few. Family members could watch for their runners on the giant 40’ hi-def screen and once finished, runners were greeted by the Erdinger crew to taste Erdinger Non-Alcoholic as a recovery drink and make their way to Wahoo’s Village to enjoy the festival. The UPS Personal Item Storage collected, sorted and returned 6,000 bags of runners’ gear and over 1,600 runners were able to get those sore muscles attended to by over 120 massage therapists from Massage Envy.

We want to thank all of the sponsors that participated and helped make the 11th annual event such an amazing success and a very special thank you to the more than 2,000 volunteers that helped during the weekend. We could not have done it without you.

U.S. Bank OC Marathon Charitable Contributions

The OC Marathon Charity Program The 2015 OC Marathon was a financial success from a charitable contribution standpoint as well. The event raised over $265,000.00 for many local charities. Also new in 2015, the OC Marathon released new charity program guidelines which allowed for the expansion of the OC Marathon’s charity program from 9 charities to 19 charities. Runners who run the OC Marathon have the option to run in support of a charity. Many run for a family member or loved one who is going through a difficult time. The charitable contribution adds to the many lives touched by the OC Marathon.

Each of the charities played a crucial role in the volunteer aspect of the OC Marathon, contributing many of their hours to help us put on our great event! The Charities that are involved are: aMAYZing Kids, FACT Alliance Inc, Girls on the Run Orange County, HD CARE, Illumination Foundation, Infinite Hero Foundation, Jewish Federation and Family Services Orange County, John Wayne Cancer FoundationMarketplace Ministries Worldwide, Music Saves Lives, OM Foundation, Outreach to the World Inc, Project Independence, Susan G Komen Orange County, The Junior League of Orange County CA, The Orange County Bar Foundation, The Salvation Army Orange County, Train 4 Autism, and We Run Orange Countys Kids, WeROCK.

The OC Marathon Foundation’s Kids Run the OC Program presented by Nutrilite

The Orange County Marathon was established in 2004 by community and civic leaders to create a world class event and raise money for children’s charities in Orange County. The OC Marathon’ Foundation (OCMF) supports the Kids Run the OC Program and our mission to “Inspire Kid’s to Fitness”. Partnering with youth physical education and sports experts from the Orange County Department of Education, OCMF created the Kids Run the OC youth running program to help kids ages 5-14 get fit and adopt an active, healthy lifestyle through running, all while having fun. The program has seen huge gains since its inception in 2004 with just 400 kids. In 2015, the program trained coaches from over 92 schools and agencies and had over 6,000 kids throughout Orange County training for their Final Mile all spring. A September 2013 Runner’s World Magazine article states, “Cash-Strapped school districts that eliminate physical education to focus on classroom learning might be doing students a disservice.” The article suggests a study showing better test performance by fit kids than their unfit peers.” Since the start of the program, Kids Run the OC program has trained over 30,000 kids to finish their own “Marathon” and taught them valuable lessons in fitness and nutrition. On behalf of the OC Marathon Foundation board, we want to thank you for your efforts and support in our mission to help the kids of Orange County.
