BUILDING ORIENTATION CONSIDERATIONSNoise: Coming nearly from Katipunan Ave., but with a 15m buffer zoneRoads: Quirino and Ma. Regidor Sts., are minor UP streets. These are mainly accesses by CHE students. Ma. Regidor St., can be a bypass to College of Science.

North: Quirino St., Narra Residence Hall

South: Institute of Chemistry, College of Science

East: Katipunan Ave., UP IS High

School

West: Ma. Regidor St., UPIS K-2

Terrain: Relatively flat with a gentle slope

Tropical Design Considerations• East-West orientation- longer face of the building

is shaded• Massing- designed to have a wind catch for the

NE and SW winds. NE and SW faces are maximized to cover a larger surface area so that natural ventilation may reach all spaces.

• Sun-shading devices- vertical and horizontal louvers are provided to minimize direct sunlight to the spaces.

SITE AND MASSING STUDIES• Linear and modular type - initial plan to utilize and maximize the space and be able to

fit in all the areas required by the Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design faculty and students.

• Areas and rooms were placed on one side of the space and a hallway was allotted. • In this way, the circulation and flow of air and use of daylight will be maximized as well.

• To break the monotony of a traditional school facility, the group introduced circular shapes and landscaping thus, integrating the semi-organic space concept- CocoPhony.

Design Rationale • The proposed CTID building

envisions a designers' hub enriching the capability and creativity of the future designers.

• Guided on a philosophy that architectural and interior design forms can excite people on having sustainable lifestyle, this brings nature back in everyday lives through nature-inspired contemporary spaces.

CocoPhony (Coconut + Symphony of

spaces)

• The concept challenged the notion of a traditional building form by merging the new school facility with the environment.

• Starting from a rectangular volume, the building design connects with each area where it is life sustaining.

• Symphony: integrating indoor/ outdoor spaces on dynamic patterns of light and shadow to contemporary yet sustainable inspired designers' hub.

Design Solution

Timeless design and sustainability less the cost

• Breaks the monotony of a traditional school building.

• The open areas draws day lighting down into the inner recesses of the building.

• Each floor is divided into public to private areas to provide safety and traffic control for faculty and students.

• Integrated internal and external areas, the use of balcony, hallways and large glazed windows allow every room space interaction with the landscape.

Project cost estimate: P20,00- 24,000/ sqm. (inclusive of labor and materials). Materials chosen for the design lasts long and of low maintenance.

Cocophony greenovation: Integrating sustainability in the proposed

CTID building• Rising and setting of the sun: The

building is oriented where the most of the facade experiences the morning sun

• Movement of the wind: Northeast and Southeast Monsoon for durability and strength of materials will be used for the building facade. Also, aspects on how hot and cold air moves and circulates throughout the building.

Greenovation

• Landscaping: Use of plants in the facade as it helps filter the direct sunlight before it reaches the interior spaces.

• Solar Panels: On roofing, located where the noon sun sets. Use of solar panels can be used and act as alternative source of energy aside from generators in case of brownouts.

• Water drainage: devising water drainage that will catch rainwater. Installation of pipes that can tap the toilet facilities that reduce water consumption by 50% through using collected rainwater.

• Location of stairs located on both ends of the building. As per Fire Code safety requirement, every 45-60m, a fire exit stairway should be located. In this building, it would suffice as the length is only 68meters provided with 2 exit stairways. A ramp and elevator is provided for the mobility impaired individuals.

• Space programming and designation of areas were categorized in terms of department, ease of access, safety and traffic control; and dividing areas on public to semi-public, to semi-private to private areas.
