4 Parental Controls

5 Introduction
The year is 1865. Advances insteam technology have set thisworld on a different course from thatwhich you know. Here the dividerbetween history and literature hasalso been blurred; the heroes of warand the heroes from books are oneand the same.
It falls to you now to take commandof an elite unit made up of theseheroes, util izing the latest in steamtechnology and guiding your forcesin battle against an alien menacethat threatens the entire world.
6 Starting a New Game
Go to the main-menuscreen and chooseCampaign (page 9) orVersus (page 15). Forcampaigns, you caneither load a save file or start a newcampaign by selecting NewCampaign.
7 Saving and Erasing Data
To erase data, go to the file-selection screen and tap Delete.You can erase all files by holdingdown , , and whenlaunching the game from the HOMEMenu.
Erasing Data
The game will automatically savewhen you complete a map. In addition, you can save the gamemid-map by activating a save point.Save points can only be used once,but also enable you to spend somemedals to restore agents' health andsteam. During a mission, if you pause andchoose Return to Title Screen, you'llcreate a single-use quick-save filethat will be deleted after you load it.
Saving Data
◆ Be careful. Deleted data cannot berecovered.
● Data can be lost due to useraction, such as repeatedlypowering off and on the systemor removing a Game Card or SDCard while saving. Data lossmay also be caused by poorconnectivity due to dirt or dustin the system's ports. Please beaware that in these cases datacannot be restored.

At the start of your turn, eachcharacter receives a certain amountof steam depending on what boilerhe or she is equipped with. Mostactions cost steam to perform.

When your character is hit by anattack, he or she loses health. Whenthat character's health reaches zero,he or she is defeated and will beunable to fight until the map iscleared (if all characters' healthreaches zero, the mission fails). Youalso can spend a certain amount ofmedals at any save point to reviveany fallen characters.
Once per map, each character canuse a powerful move called aspecial. These can have variouseffects depending on the characterin question. You will unlock specialsearly in the game.

9 Campaign Mode
In Campaign mode, you'll follow thestory of Henry Fleming and theagents of S.T.E.A.M. as they fight torepel the alien invasion of Earth.
Once you complete a mission, youwill receive a score in medals. Yoursquad will receive promotions andunlock additional equipment basedon your cumulative score.
Score
The campaign is divided into 16missions, each of which comprisesone or more maps. On each map,you will need to complete anobjective (e.g., "reach the goal") tomove on to the next map orcomplete the mission. Betweenmaps, your agents will be healed ofall damage and you will have theopportunity to re-equip and/or swapin different agents.

11 The Flow of Battle
During the enemy's turn, you may ormay not be able to see what yourenemy is up to, depending on thecurrently selected character's line ofsight. You may switch betweencharacters to keep an eye on otherareas of the map.
Turns
Characters with certain weaponsequipped and enough steam leftover at the end of their turn wil l beplaced in overwatch mode. In thismode, a character will shoot at anyenemy that moves within his or herrange and field of view. Remember,where you're facing is important foroverwatch!

12 Weapons and Equipment
Your struggle with the alien invaderswill require a variety of weapons andequipment. Choosing the right toolfor the job can be the differencebetween success and failure!
To equip your characters, choose amission to play or replay. Fromthere, you can select which agentsto use and tap Play. This will takeyou to the Equip screen, where youcan select sub weapons and boilers.

Early in the game, you will receiveyour first two sub weapons, with twomore following shortly afterward.After that, you will unlock new subweapons at certain score thresholds.Additionally, there are three largegears on each map, often in out-of-the-way locations. Collect these tounlock new boilers for your agentsto use.

Like main weapons, sub weaponsvary widely from each other. Unlikemain weapons, you can change whatsub weapon a given character isequipped with.Tap Random to equip a randomlyselected sub weapon from theavailable options.
Select Random in the sub-weapon slot to randomly assignthat type of equipment to thecurrently selected agent.Select Shuffle to randomlyassign sub weapons to allagents.
13 Agents
Wars aren't fought by equipment;they're fought by soldiers. Eachmember of S.T.E.A.M. is a uniquelytalented individual, ready to do hisor her part against the alien menace.
Each character also has a specialthat can be used once per map. Notall of these are attacks, but all arevery powerful. Use them well.
Special
In terms of gameplay, the biggestdifference between agents comesfrom their main weapons. Theserange from the straightforwardlypowerful Eagle Rifle to the area-wide healing ability of the Medi-Mortar.
Main Weapon
Lastly, agents vary in their maximumhealth and their weight class. Theformer dictates how much damageagents can take before beingdefeated. The latter determineswhat kinds of boilers they can wear.
Stats
Every agent has an ability thatgrants either a bonus or an extracapability. A few characters haveabilities that give a bonus to theentire squad. These are called TeamEffects.

Crates labeled "S.T.E.A.M." containmedical kits, extra steam tanks, orother helpful items. Most damage-causing weapons can break openthese crates, as can an agent withthe Break ability.Metal boxes will contain medals.Only certain weapons can breakthem open.

Most enemy aliens have a weak spotsomewhere on their bodies. Examineyour foes carefully and try attackingfrom various angles to see if youcan find these weaknesses.

15 Versus Mode
Versus mode lets you battle againsta human opponent, with just a fewdifferences from the Campaignmode:
• There are three different types ofVersus match: Death Match, MedalBattle, and A.B.E. Battle (seeVersus Game Types below).
• Turns in Death Match and MedalBattle are on a time limit (A.B.E.Battles are real time).
• Each player controls his or her ownteam of S.T.E.A.M. agents,equipped with whatever weaponsand equipment he or she hasunlocked in the game thus far.
You will be able to choose from avariety of maps specifically createdfor multiplayer battles and customizeyour team with weapons, boilers,and characters.
Death Match: Defeat all fourmembers of your opponent's squadbefore he or she defeats yours.
Medal Battle: Collect more medals

Creating a Tournament
Players who place in a tournamentwill receive a title that will appear onthe results screen. These areestablished by the tournamentcreator and are awarded for first,second, and third place. A runner-up title is awarded for players whodon't place but are in the top 10%of players (this option will onlymatter for very large tournaments).
