2:00 – 4:00 PMScience Fiction / Technology FactCollection of Images From Maison d'Ailleurs/Agence Martienne with thesupport from the European Space Agency

Selected works from “Science Fiction / Technology Fact” (published by ESA, BR205]} a European Space Agency’s exhibition based on a study that was carriedout by Maison d’Ailleurs in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, which houses one ofthe world’s largest collections of science fiction literature in the world.

“Artwork has played an influential and central role in science fiction literature. Ithas partly defined the scope of the genre and has brought the startling andimaginative visions of outer space, exploration of other worlds, interplanetaryspaceflight and extraterrestrial beings into the minds and consciousness of thegeneral public.

In magazines and books, film and television, advertising and video, the artist’svision has transformed words into dazzling and compelling images that still lifethe spirits and brighten the soul.”

The presentation of stills from the collection juxtaposes images of what say thespace station actually looks like today compared with how artists many years agoimagined they might appear, long before they were on the drawing boards andeven before the first satellite had been launched. Exhibition componentfacilitated by David Raitt, Senior Technology Officer, European Space Agencyand Patrick Gyger of the Maison d’Ailleurs in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland

3:00 – 3:15 PMSpace Exploration In ArtWith Don Davis

A collection of paintings of space subjects and ideas are presented as a video'slide show', including the works of members of the International Association ofAstronomical Artists. Painters of space art 'bring to life' wonders beyond theexperience of most people using the visual language of naturalism as aconceptual ladder to obtain a cosmic overview. The sharing of an impression ofwhat fascinates the artist about the subject on a visual level is often combinedwith a working knowledge of the science involved.

6:00 – 6:20 PMForgotten Animals / Forgotten JunkWith Michael Ricciardi

A short 'imagined memoir' (video) of HAM, the first chimp in space, a short

slideshow tribute to other forgotten, animal space pioneers, and a power point

performance: 'Space Junk - What it is, what to do with it'.

On January 31, 1961, Ham (whose name was an acronym for Holloman Aero Med), becamethe first great ape (chimpanzee) in space, aboard a Mercury Redstone rocket on a sub-orbital flight very similar to Alan Shepard’s. Ham experienced a total of 6.6 minutes of

weightlessness during a 16.5-minute flight. A post-flight medical examination found Hamto be slightly fatigued and dehydrated, but in good shape otherwise.

7:15 – 7:20 PMRocket Science: Q Club In The 23rd Century

Rocket ScienceQ Club in the 23rd CenturyThis is a new film from the talented young artists attending an after school artclub managed by Derby QUAD ltd. Q Club has 10 members aged between 8 and13 years old from various social backgrounds. The influence for this particularfilm came from the young people themselves. They wanted to make, and be partof, a film and its production. Experienced artists worked closely with the group togive support and guidance through the different processes needed to make thefilm.

Green screening techniques were used to film the young people as astronauts, which were later superimposed onto their beautiful artwork which they hadcreated of planets and galaxies they would like explore. The group designed theirown space suits and logos for the suits. The commentary is from the youngpeople; giving their thoughts of what it would be like to be in space and to be anastronaut, which adds a poignant touch to their fabulous finished creation. Thisproject was made possible through support from Derby Children’s Fund.

Fluxions is an artwork / program written in Java language (Java3D API). It consists of03 poetic realms organized as sensorial 3D virtual worlds. They explore metaphors forimaginary configurations of outside space. Bots (autonomous robots) living inside theartificial system create realms: visual mathematical realities only possible insidecomputer graphics environments. They permit the exploration of unfathomable realitiesdue to the establishment of mathematical relations to achieve unpredicted poetic andaesthetic sensations. Fluxions utilizes Pulfrich effect to attain the illusion of deepness.

Scene from ‘HITEN Zero Gravity Dance' Ishiguro Setsuko – Ishiguro Dance Theatre

Proposed for flight on the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency 'KIBO'module, the dancers, shown during parabolic flight, employ references toDunhuang Cave Art while analyzing the physical characteristics and dancepostures of these figures of Hiten in microgravity space.

Hiten are flying deities in the Buddhist tradition have their origins in India fromwhere they were brought to Japan through China along the Silk Road.

The most beautiful ancient images of them are found in the grottoes of Dunhuangand Yungang (China) and the Ishiguro Dance Theatre presents videodocumentation of the Hiten while flying in parabolic flight.

10:10 – 10:20 PMEl Milagroso (The Miracle)Antonio Jose Guzman, Filmmaker, Netherlands

The film represents Dutch/Panamanian artist Antonio Jose Guzman dream aboutbuilding a giant glass sphere in which he can cross the Atlantic ocean. Hisproject is an ode to late Los Angeles based Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader. Aderdisappeared in an attempt to travel in a small boat from the US east coast toIreland. Ader's project the Miraculous became an urban legend for many artist onboth sides of the Atlantic. In his film Guzman tries the convince his friends andfamily of the possibility of such an attempt's success. Other main interpretationsfor Guzman are based on his fascination with gravity and diasphora.

SKY STUDIO Video Documentation includes some of the following projects:

MOMENTS IN THE INFINITE ABSOLUTEWith Lowry Burgess visiting Yuri’s Night Bay Area VirtuallyBurgess’s monumental work, ‘The Seed of the Infinite Absolute’ floated inmicrogravity above Los Angeles, generating brilliant flashes of light as it transitsfrom OG to 2Gs.

It is formed by an elaborate series of processes and distillations created, indifferent global climates, over the past 25 years. Its shell, a geometricallycomplex, hand size ‘seed’ is a fusion of the 12 ‘royal’ metals. It contains a unifiedemulsion of the essences of 44 trees, 52 flowers, 36 waters, 32 bloods and 120telepathic hopes representing, in essence, the entire Earth. All these elementsare unified into one essential, hand-held form to be ‘released’ by the artist at theedge of the absolute state of micro-gravity.

The concept for this artwork in micro-gravity is the simple gesture of release froma human hand of the hand-sized form of "the Seed of the Infinite Absolute" intorepeated moments of weightlessness (moments of 'equant' balance) and double-density/double-gravity weighted ness. (It is actually quite a dense and heavysmall pear sized object). At the moment of its weightlessness, it flashes withbright white stroboscopic light (the flashing brilliance of its approach to theAbsolute).

The Seed of the Infinite Absolute by Lowry Burgess, 2005

TIME PASSES WHILE READINGContinued with his interest in the ideas and methods of the Situationists, duringhis second parabolic flight in microgravity on May 4, 2006, Frank Pietronigroincorporated the technique of Flanerie as the artist imprinted into microgravityspace floating signs composed of cut-up pictographs appropriated from a page ina book written in 1950 by Lettrist Gabriel Pomerand titled ‘Saint ghetto des prets’.The pictographs represent a journey through the bohemian Left Bankneighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Pres in Paris.

By taking this action, Pietronigro actualized earlier space art project conceptswhere the artists desired to float signs, text, pictures in a communal space whereothers could also add signs, text, pictures of their own while collaboratingtogether on the creation of new form of microgravity poetics. The artist questionswhat benefits enjoying such leisure time activities in space will afford thosetraveling on long-term space journeys in the future and he contemplates whatnew forms of communication and language creation might evolve using suchtechniques in a space where the text is not fixed and static.

Page from book ‘Saint ghetto des prets’ [1] created in 1950 by Lettrist Gabriel Pomerandand appropriated by Pietronigro for ‘drifting’ during flight.

FLAGS IN SPACE! by Frank Pietronigro, 2006

10:40 – 11:00 PMSPACE ART: Exploring New Territories! The International @rt OutsidersJean-Luc Soret, CuratorDirect from Paris’s International @rt Outsiders Festival held at the MaisonEuropéenne de la Photographie, Paris / France.www.art-outsiders.com - [email protected]

In 2003, the International @rt Outsiders Festival, presented an historical eventbased on the "Space Art" theme, which was held at the Maison Européenne dela Photographie. This was the very first time a festival, exclusively dedicated tospace art, have been organized in France.

"Space Art" is all those contemporary artistic practices that are inspired by spaceresearch or space activity. It is, therefore, not an aesthetic current that imposesshared formal rules of presentation or representation, but rather an artisticcurrent defined by a subject: space, drawing on a community of passionate, livelyinterests by an infinite scope of investigation that is as yet little explored.

The panorama of the works which are shown here enables us toforcefully demonstrate the extraordinary vitality of contemporarycreation via the novelty and diversity of the fields of experimentationthat it covers: artistic experiments in weightlessness, collective andparticipatory works intended for space voyages, sub-orbital andenvironmental projects, multimedia installations based on radio-astronomy and radio-telescopy, cosmic representations, weightlesssculpture and architecture, digital creations concerning fantasy, esthetics or the history of the conquest of space.

These unique artists, painters, plastic artists, architects, sculptors, film makers, musicians and poets appropriate each in their own way the collective imaginationlinked to the exploration of space, providing us with fascinating works, that reveala particular awareness of the incomparable social-cultural changes that areassociated with technological progress.

This video program tries to illustrate to the prodigious force of evocationthat this Terra Incognita has always held for the human community.

Video shorts include:

“KEO”, Jean-Marc Philippe, (2001) Selected as the " Project for the 21st century" by Unesco, Keo is a satelliteprepared for launching by 2008 for a long journey around the planet Earth inorder to land in about 50 000 years later and deliver to our remote descendantsany message given nowadays by each of us. Once Keo on orbit, all ourmessages - which will remain strictly anonymous within the archives kept onEarth - are going to be analyzed by linguists and sociologists.

The content will be summarized by cartographers in order to set up a publicdebate, a scientific device which will enable us to answer a couple of mainquestions such as "who are we?" and what kind of world and society could webuild starting today in terms of human betterment?

“KEO”, Jean-Marc Philippe, (2001)

“COLLISION II”, Richard Clar, (2003) with Music by Marc Battierwww.arttechnologies.com

COLLISION II, an orbital debris constellation sculpture in low-Earth orbit, isrepresented in a multimedia video installation featuring music by the Frenchcomposer, Marc Battier. Attention is focused on the serious problem of orbitaldebris, particularly in low-Earth orbit.

Selected for COLLISION II, 192 orbital debris objects (color-coded by country oforigin) are shown in the installation video along with the remainder of the 10,000objects (small white dots) currently in the U.S. Space Command's catalog oftracked orbital debris objects.

Surrounding our planet Earth, the trajectories of all of this debris, which at firstmight appear to be chaotic, are in fact known and listed in the U.S. SpaceCommand's catalog of orbital debris objects in space. Using data from thiscatalog, and a super-computer, the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington,D.C., created the simulations seen in the COLLISION II presentation.

“COLLISION II”, Richard Clar, (2003)

“OPEN SKY”, Ewen Chardronnet and "RT32", Rasa Smite, Martins Ratkins,Raitis Smits, (2003)

"Open Sky" looks at how artists explore conversions from military to civilian inspace and sky arts. It presents a film that shows how to open the sky to stimulatepossible conversions and investigate orbital information systems in the context ofpost-Apollo to post-Cold War/Desert Storm esthetics and politics. “Open sky”shows also the background of the conversion for civil use of the "RT 32"telescope of Irbene in Latvia.http://acoustic.space.re-lab.nethttp://www.rixc.lvhttp://www.radioqualia.net

“SIGNATURE TERRE” + “PROGRAMME BIOSPACE” + “ZERO G. ART”,Pierre Comte, (2003)Visible from space, "Signature Terre" is a gigantic ground installation thatreaches its full significance with the satellite views presented.

"Biospace Program" a project that endeavors to prove that the idealarchitecture for weightlessness is a sphere. An original work that gives us aglimpse of tomorrow's space shuttle cockpit.

"Zero G. Art" thanks to backing by the CNES, ESA and NASA, Pierre Comtehas created very particular plastic works, in which the interest lies ó amongstother things ó in the way in which they move about in space.

“COSMIC DANCER”, Arthur Woods, (1993)On Friday, March 23, 2001: the MIR space station plunged into the south Pacificin flames. Along with the station, the "Cosmic Dancer," the first sculpture onboard the MIR since 1993, that was specifically created for the station and forweightlessness, disappeared into the ocean. With no attachment points, thissculpture offers viewers a multitude of perceptual points or rather position points, creating a three dimensional kinetic relationship with the cosmonauts.

A captivating video documentary that enables the public to observe the birth andrealization of this historical, yet ephemeral work.www.cosmicdancer.com

This video sent direct from Japan, documents Ayako Ono's work at ESA'sEuropean Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC). Environmentalimprovements such as increased natural stimulation are helpful for spacecrew to reduce stress levels and enhance their working capability. Art couldalso be a part of this environment. Ayako Ono will demonstrate the simulationof her ideas and will demonstrate some art 'experiments' in microgravityenvironments using ESA's parabolic flight and drop tower.

11:50 – 12:00 MidnightSo Negishi Works - Carillon Seed PLUS!Microgravity experiment using the drop tower at European Space AgencySo Neggishi, Japan

He made the work as a trial sculptural piece that makes sounds. Notonly producing sounds, but also enjoying its movement when the ballsas contents hit each other, like toys.
