Player Numbers and Organisation

We currently have 61 boys currently registered and playing regularly with us. We are net 6 players

down on this time last year (67) and are net 2 player down on those who registered last January (61).

Six new boys joined us during 2016. Two boys who joined came from Irish families returning from the

US, 2 came from foreign families moving to Dublin for 1-2 years and 2 came through personal contacts

with local rugby clubs. Some of the boys who left us went to play soccer or schools rugby (joined

Willow Park) and or lost interest. All players play football and we have 2 boys who do not play hurling.

Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due

to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams (3 teams in Cheetahs, 2 team in

Pumas). We streamed players on match day for the whole year – generally into A, B and C – but

sometimes into A & B/C mixed teams.

Organisation

We have a 6 person steering committee and around 15 mentors involved in overall training and player

development. Our steering committee meeting every 8 weeks to discuss finance, fund raising, training,

equipment. match performance and social activities. Meetings with our larger coaching team is much

less frequent and we need to improve on this.

We have one of our coaches (Michael Hogan) dedicated to leading the football training and

development and another coach (Donagh Healy) dedicated to hurling skills development. Each

develops the training program for the code that they are responsible for.

Eight of our mentors took the Award 1 Coaching course ran by Cuala in November 2015

Training & Go-Games

Our group hold our main training sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings and play Go Games

on Saturday. We generally train football for one complete week before a Saturday football Go-Game

and train hurling the following week. This year we added a third training session dedicated to hurling

– Wall Ball. We initially started this on Sunday evenings but due to low player numbers we moved it

to Friday evenings. Initially numbers were low (10-12) but we’ve been able to grow it to 20-40 players

with the help of special initiatives.

Our Go Games season went reasonably well with good player attendance, especially after we dropped

our sixth team. We were somewhat competitive in football but generally lacked in hurling. The Pumas

squad were very competitive in football winning the majority of their games, but fared less well in

hurling. The Cheetahs squad did reasonably well in football but lost most of their hurling fixtures.

Going by ability levels, our As were reasonably strong, our Bs a bit weak and our C’s improved

significantly during the year (losing many games narrowly).

We would like to thank Sean O'Dochraigh and Robert Flavin (two coaches, who train other teams but

with sons in our year), who supported Wall Ball nights.

Page 4: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

We would like to thank two Adult hurlers (Eddie Monaghan/Shaun McMahon) who supported a

couple of training sessions in Jan 16, during their off season. This was very helpful and is something

we would like to see expanded.

Finance, fund raising and Social

We ran two fund raisers during the year – a sponsored night walk and a bag pack. Between our player

subvention and the fund raising we expect to breakeven for the calendar year. We may try to arrange

an additional fund raising event before year end.

We had a number of social events for the players. We went on day trips to both Roscommon and

Kilkenny to play local teams and then onto watch the Dublin senior teams League match. We did a

few pizza nights in the bar to encourage attendance at Friday night Wall Ball. One of these events we

did a table quiz which was a good success. We also ran an event in Bray Bowl last January where we

presented certificates for hurling skills in our Cuala Can Skills challenges.

We made a big effort to arrange these events this year as we believe that fostering the social bonds

between the players is critical for player retention.

Additional Notes

There was a number of additional initiatives and events during the year:

Cuala Bualagh

This was an event jointly organized by the 2007 and 2006 boys. We invited a number of clubs in May

to Thomastown for a day of hurling matches and fun. The event ran flawlessly and was hugely

successful due to the excellent work done by the organizing committee. A big thanks is due to this

small committee of mentors from the 2007 and 2006 coaches, to the other mentors and parents who

helped on the day, to the kids who played and especially to the various sponsors who funded the

event. We look forward to arranging the event again in 2017 with the 2007s where we will play

football.

Cuala Can Skills and Pentathlon Superstars

We ran a special child-centric skills competition from December till early February orgainsed by

Donagh Healy and Bob Allen. A huge amount of time and effort from Donagh and Bob went into

designing the program, creating skills cards, teaching the skills and doing individual player

assessments. The program culminated in a morning in Bray Bowl where we presented the skills certs

to the players.

This was followed by and end of season (May/June) skills pentathlon - where 5 of the key hurling skills

were taught in Wall Ball (one per week), followed by a grand final competition & pizza night - where

the best and most improved players were recognised.

We would like to especially recognise and thank Peter Carroll who provided excellent printing services

(at no cost) to support both programmes.

Page 5: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

Wicklow Hurling Tournament

The 06 boys sent an 11 a-side team to play in a 6 week long U11 Wicklow hurling tournament. Games

were generally played on Sundays and we were also supported by players from the 2005 boys. These

additional games gave the boys who played additional hurling match time and a chance to further

improve on their skills and match ability.

One Off Tournaments

We participated in several one off invitations tournaments during the year. In particular, Paul Swan

brought players to Killkenny and Michael Hogan took teams to Blessington GAA for additional

matches.

Friday Floodlight League

This is an initiative ran by Donagh Healy and Alan Dunphy has just started and is designed to encourage

Friday night wall ball attendance. In parallel with the indoor wall ball hurling training we picked 8

teams to play hurling matches. The teams are picked based on the school that players attend. We

have only had 1 week of this so far where we doubled our usual Friday night attendance. We’ve a

great buzz with the players over it since its launch. “Forget County. Forget Club. This is school vs

school. Mate vs Mate”

We'd like to thank Ken Fitzgerald for leading the mentor coaching sessions for us during the year. Finally we'd like to thanks all the 2006 parents and mentors for their support and help with training, go-games, setting up pitches, fundraising and chauffeuring their boys to and from pitches all over Dublin during the year.

Page 6: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

2005 (U11)

We had 56 players registered this year in 2005 boys with some boys leaving during the year and some

new recruits we now have 51 boys involved. We had 4 teams playing hurling and football every

weekend in Go Games with teams in two, two team groupings.

The group have been competitive in both Hurling and Football winning and losing along the way,

teams were streamed each week in both groupings.

We remain frustrated yet again with winter training facilities and hope this issue will be sorted sooner

rather than later. We also have a number of mentors who are keen to do more courses and workshops

but with busy schedules they need reasonable notice of upcoming courses.

We have been training 2 nights a week for the year and have had good attendance by all the boys.

One of our highlights of the year was the weekly summer camaint competition and finals day in Parnell

Park where the boys won their match. Our Christmas trip to Carlow go to bowling in the morning and

for lunch and then on the Leinster hurling final to cheer on the boys in red was another great day out.

We also had a fun end of season event in Cabinteely Park in June which went very well, with thanks

to JP Byrne and the minors who acted as drill sergeants for the boy’s fun team building obstacle course

challenge race, it was a great night with chips and cake rounding off a perfect evening.

We had our annual sponsored walk which again was well attended and had a fun family bingo night

as our second fundraiser for the year which was good apart from the acoustic issues in the hall.

A special mention and thanks to Donal Murphy who has given so much time and his vast experience

to the 2005 boys. His help with training has brought the boy's hurling skill level up and has been a

benefit to all the coaches too. We look forward to him working with us again this coming year.

Thank you also to Maurice O'Callaghan who has now started working with the group

concentrating on football and here too we are seeing the benefits of his expertise.

Thanks to Aidan (chair), Michael (secretary), Denise (treasurer) and Mary (group registrar) and all the

Juvenile committee who helped during the year. Thanks to Gerry for keeping refs organised for the

matches and to Ken and Barry Club GPO's for their help.

One final thank you to our great group of parents, steering group, mentors, coaching subcommittee

and especially Aviv and Eimear for all their texting to sort teams each week and Ciara and Kela for

looking after fundraising and events.

2004 (U12)

We currently have a pool of around 46 players as we head towards the tail end of this year in 2004 boys. This year for the first time we entered competitive leagues at U12 in both Hurling and Football. We fielded 3 teams in each – we use Reds, Stripes and Whites as our team names. The year started with grading blitzes that are used to organise the teams into appropriate leagues. After the grading blitzes, in Football we were in Division 2, 6 and 11, and in Hurling we were in divisions 2, 6 and 10. Our Cuala Whites fared best, coming runners up in Division 11 which gives us medals to present now at the end of the year which is great. We did struggle in division 2. In many games we were competitive, but victories in the most part eluded us, and in some cases the opposition was just too strong. In division 6 we also competed well, but would have liked to get more points under our belts. There has been terrific improvement in the lads playing over the year, not just as individuals but also their playing as a team. We certainly finished the year much stronger than when we started, and we look forward to next year as a great chance for the lads to develop further. For most of the year we were able to field enough players for the 3 teams, though at times we did need to call on the 2005s to help us out, which they always did, so many thanks for their support. This year we also took part in the Summer Camaint competition, which runs throughout July, with a final in the GAA National Games Development Centre in August. It was good to have some extra hurling during the summer months, though at times we struggled to get enough players for teams. One of the highlights of the year would be when the Juveniles Boys and the Academy got together to organise U8, U10 and U12 teams to go down to a tournament in Ballinkillen in honour of Eoghan and Ruari Chada. For the U12 team, the 2004 and 2005 boys pooled together to make up an u12 team for the tournament. The lads played really well together and it was a great experience. We won all our matches leading up the final against clubs from Kilkenny, Carlow and Cork, but in the final we met a very strong Naas who won in the end. One of our players, Padraig Hogan, was awarded “player of the tournament” and Stephen Joyce did very well for us in the target shooting games on the day, joint winner of the wall ball target shooting, and second place in the crossbar challenge. In fundraising this year, we started with a successful 5k sponsored run of coaches (and parents) vs the boys. You won’t be surprised to hear that the boys certainly showed in no small measure who was quicker and fitter over the 5k. We also won a €500 community trust grant through Version 1. More recently we had a bag pack which also brought in some much needed funding. Many thanks to all our parents in the fundraising committee for bringing this all together. More events are being planned for next year. Thanks to Aidan (chair), Michael (secretary), Denise (treasurer) and Mary (group registrar and our year registrar) and all the Juvenile committee who helped during the year giving advice on what to expect as well as keeping the Juvenile section well organised. Thanks to Lorraine for all the organising done as club manager. A big thanks to our team bainisteoirs who have done a huge amount of work keeping the teams running through the year. Many thanks to all our coaches and mentors who keep our training sessions working and our matches in order, and to all the parents who help.

2003 (U13)

The 2003 group is finishing this 2016 season on a fairly positive note, with a marked improvement in both codes. During the 2016 season all of our teams (two football and two hurling) were competitive in their divisions, with second place being achieved by two teams, one football and one hurling team. The boys enjoyed themselves and continued to develop as players and friends. We fulfilled all our county fixtures, played extra challenge matches, and send a team to the Austin Stacks Lee Strand U13 tournament. We’re looking forward to 2017 and the new challenges of competing at U14 level, and to carry the positive momentum into next year. Support to the U14 Féile was a significant effort, but the effort was well worthwhile with the visiting teams being very happy with the now traditional Cuala Féile Hospitality. We hosted both football and hurling Féilte, so special thanks to all our 2003 parents for their help and generosity on both occasions!

Hurling The hurling league positions were determined by the teams’ performance in the U12 hurling leagues in 2015. Due to the increase in the size of teams and the reduction in the number of teams our second team dropped one division and they started 2016 in division 6. The first hurling team started the season in division 3, having narrowly missed an opportunity for promotion to division 2. For next year it is our hope that:

Our second team will continue to be solid in division 6.

Our first team will get the opportunity to play in division 2, having finished 2016 in second place in division 3.

A significant challenge for us in hurling is to maintain two hurling teams in 2017. Since before summer we have been depending on the support of the 2004 year group. Particular thanks to Ronan Flavin for helping out. Unfortunately, we continue to see a greater drop off in numbers playing hurling as compared to football, so we expect to continue to need support. While we do expect to enter two hurling teams next year, it will be a challenge!

Football The football teams went through a tough round of grading leagues at the beginning of the 2016 season. The first team were graded to division 4 and second in division 7. Both playing at competitive levels. Our first team finished in fifth place in division 4, we hope to improve on that position next year. Our second team fared very well in division 7, finishing in second place in the division. We now look forward to promotion to division 6 and the challenges that that represents.

Féile 2017 – Fundraising

The fundraising efforts for Féile 2017 started in January 2016, when we had a very successful bag pack in Dunnes Cornelscourt. We’ve had a few more bag packing events since then and the bag packs and other donations have helped to drive a good positive balance for the group. But we know that the demands the two Féilte will place on the group will be significant. We will continue our Féile fundraising efforts into 2017.

Page 9: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

Looking forward to 2017

Given that two of our teams have finished in second place, we expect:

Our first hurling team to be promoted to division 2, we do expect that this will be a significant challenge for the boys. But after two strong years in division 3 hurling, the opportunity to play in division 2 is really deserved.

Our second football team to be promoted to division 6. The team management are really excited by the prospect of playing at next level.

Up until May 2017 our thoughts will be turning to the Football and Hurling Féilte. The 2002 group applied to host one Hurling and one Football Féile, we would hope to do similar. This will allow for the greatest number of our boys to play in Féile at their “home ground” in Thomastown. As the year rolls on we’ll be aiming to be as competitive as we can in our divisions, and look forward to helping out the 2002s where we can and continuing to getting help from 2004s.

2002 (U14)

Below is reports from our managers outlining our success on the pitch and as a group. As a group, I believe our success this year was down to several things. The most important one being that we stuck together as a group regardless of team or code all the managers and parents worked together. We have shown our players that regardless of team and ability we are all in this together. The support in the last year from parents has been fantastic especially around Feile. I always say the 2002 boys are a lucky group we have a great management set up for all our teams, very supportive parents and most importantly a great group of players on and off the pitch. So, as we head off out of the Juvenile section into Minor, we are all excited about the challenges that are ahead of us next year. So, on that note I would like to sincerely thank the Juvenile committee for their support and hard work over the last few years. Hurling - Performance and results The team had an off day when opening against Na Fianna with players missing and opposition goals dropping in. They lost home and away to Plunketts and had a blip against Olaf’s with a weakened team. In between they played some great hurling with excellent performances at home to Na Fianna and away to Naomh Barrog and Raheny. They beat Plunketts comprehensively in the league final to atone for previous defeats. The standard of hurling and team discipline improved greatly as the league progressed. FEILE NA NGAEL Despite a great effort by the lads it was a tough day and it’s fair to say we left it behind us. A contentious umpiring decision at the group stage saw the team finish level top on points but narrowly missing out on point’s difference. The team lost by a point in the semi-final having fallen to a late goal. The team’s attitude and behaviour were exemplary on the day. League Performance Notes When the opening game result is removed, Cuala had an excellent "points difference". As the season progressed the defence really tightened up conceding only one goal in their last four games. The “points scored” was the best in the division and there is no doubt that the team were the best hurlers. The lads were encouraged the get the ball forward early, quickly and wide to a well spread forward line. This created space both for the midfielders and forwards coming onto the ball to score. There were team discipline concerns early on with some players playing as individuals to the detriment of the team effort. To their credit they overcame this as the season progressed, came together well, culminating in a great team performance in the final. Training Notes The 2002 group train mid-week in Thomastown light permitting and in the IADT and the hall/muga during the winter months. They also train on Sunday mornings. Attendance has been variable with a greater than anticipated fall off during the summer months, particularly on Sundays. This year, with the assistance of John Treacy, we focused on basic ball skills, ball striking, blocking and game play. What to do best in each situation and supporting good decision making on the ball.

Page 11: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

We are aware of the different challenges facing us in Division 1 and training will be focused on the need to up our speed, improve our skill levels and adapt our play to cope at a higher level. Improved fitness levels are critical. Additional activities to support the training schedule

Winter hurling league, challenge matches with Kilmacud Crokes, Ballyboden, and Thomas

Davis.

6 a-side tournaments over the Christmas holidays.

Team building activity.

“Buy in” from players and parents to agreed behavioural standards and team ethic.

Summary The objective this year was to qualify for Division 1 and this was achieved with the added bonus of winning the league also. The Feile was a great experience for the team albeit a hard one in the end. The skill levels and general standard of hurling improved as the year progressed and several players improved greatly as the season went on. Discipline and attitude was worked on and the team performances came together particularly in the final 4 games where the collective effort made them a real force. The 2002’s have two players on the Dublin A team and 5 in the Dublin Development squad which reflects their talent and efforts and can only help the team as a whole to progress further. Acknowledgements On behalf of the A hurling group I’d like to extend a special thanks to Lorraine Hayes for all her efforts in organising the logistics around the team, bringing up players where required and keeping all the admin in order. Without her fund-raising efforts and enthusiastic commitment to the group we would struggle for sure. Thanks also to John Treacy who came in this year to assist with coaching and match preparation. He has brought his experience and an attention to detail in technique and game play that has brought the team up a level and ready for Division 1. Thanks to Niall Malone, a key member of the coaching group, who keeps the group focused on the correct priorities and ensures they are prepped, fit and ready to play. Thanks also to Kevina Malone for her great work on core fitness and support of the lads plus her first aid work and encouragement on match days. Thanks also to Tim Carey who has consistently made himself available throughout the year as a support in training and doing the running around on match day and looking after the stats. Special thanks to the B coaches, Liam Breathnach and Keith Nevin for their great job in winning their Feile and supporting the A team by making their players available and supporting the lads at training. A mention also for Jake Malone whose input during the year, particularly the league final was much appreciated and valued. He really helped the lads perform on the day. Football A team 2016 was a very successful year for this panel with them returning straight back up to Division 1 on their first attempt. We used a panel of 22 players initially but were assisted by several players from the second team and 2003 group during the year when required. We endeavoured to give as much game time as possible to all the panel but this has been difficult due to the competitive nature of games at this level. This is an area we hope to address in 2017 by using players between both the first

Page 12: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

and second team as some players whilst wanting to travel with the first team would be better served playing full matches, developing their skills on the second team. Obviously as this was our Feile year much of the focus at the start of the year was directed towards the Feile and the build-up. The team looked great on the day and thank you to our sponsors BNP, Keith Nevin & Bourke. They performed excellently in the Feile winning 3 out 3 in their group stages and then narrowly losing their semi-final to St Sylvester’s after extra time. The boys showed the true character of the team the following week when they picked themselves up from the disappointment and beat Feile winners Lucan in the league who were unbeaten to that point in League and Feile. The team played 14 games in the league and won 10 thus finishing second in the league. This secured a place in the league final against Lucan which was again was a fantastic game with Cuala rounding off a great season with a league title . The team were represented by Conal O’Toole, Tiarnan Brennan & Aaron Carey at Dublin Under14 Football Development squads and we hope they will continue here as well as being joined by other Cuala players in the coming season Acknowledgements We would like to thank all the boys for their commitment throughout the year and the many hours of fun (and headaches) they have given us. Many thanks to all the parents who have been just as committed and who are always available to support/help the team in pitch set up, jersey cleaning, umpires, linesmen and crucially fundraising. Thanks to Lorraine Hayes who does the most difficult job of liaising with oppositions, refs as well as sending out all the match/training notices, to Kevina Malone who has assisted in the fitness training and first aid throughout the year, to Keith Nevin, Liam Breathnach & Paul Scully for their work supporting the first team when needs be with players from the second team. Overall the year has been an excellent year and we look forward to competing in Division 1 next year where we will have our first taste of playing with Size 5 footballs, dealing with kick outs from the ground and playing championship. Exciting times ahead which will require a huge effort and commitment from all the players who we know will rise to the challenge. Hurling & Football B team report 2015/16 Season Hurling League: 2016 was a good year for the U14 B Hurling Team with a very strong performance in the league. They were in contention for promotion all the way, making it to a semi-final spot but just missing out on a promotion place. We had a small panel of 17 players and depended a lot on support from the 2003 group for which we are very grateful to the 2003 players and management. We found it a struggle sometimes to get enough players to make up a team and even had to concede some matches for insufficient numbers. For 2017 it looks like we’ll continue to rely on support from the 2003 group.

Page 13: Coiste na nÓg · Our kids are divided into 2 squads – Cheetahs and Pumas. We started the year with 6 teams but due to difficulties with numbers on match day we dropped to 5 teams

Football League: 2016 was also a good year for the U14 B football Team. They were fighting for contention all the way and finished in 5th place in Division 7, just missing out on a play-off place for promotion. Féile: The U14 B hurlers put in an outstanding performance to win this year’s Division 7 Hurling Féile championship - they won all their matches very convincingly. In this, too, we were assisted by the 2003 group; thanks again to them. The football team was drawn in a very tough Division 8 group. They acquitted themselves very well and upped their game - they won their first group match but then lost their next two matches to the two teams who were the eventual finalists in the competition. Thanks to our sponsors, BNP, Keith Nevin & Niall Bourke – the teams looked great in their gear and the lads (and parents) were delighted with it. The club also won great praise for our hosting of the Division 7 Hurling Féile – well done to the 2003 group for that as well, headed by Séamus MacGiolla Phádraig. Acknowledgements: A big thanks to all the lads for their effort during the year as well as the parents for their continuing support. A special thanks to Lorraine Hayes for all her organising with a special mention for her fund raising for Féile. Thanks to the coaches Aedan Quinn, Niall Malone and John Treacy, Derek Dunne, Paul Brennan, Paddy Murdock and Peter Murray for all their hard work and effort in training the team and to Kevina Malone for fitness training. In general, it’s been a great pleasure working with the lads in training and matches and we’ve really enjoyed the year with them. The most impressive and enjoyable part was seeing them develop over the course of the year – their skill levels improved and they all came to compete much more and successfully for the ball. They also came to gel much more as a team. So, a big well done to the lads for all of that.

Treasurer Report

The Juvenile Boys finished the year with a small surplus of income over expenditure of €5,731.

The player subventions received by the Juvenile Boys from the annual subscriptions paid by

the members is for 2016 is €70 per player. This generates income of circa €21k for the section

each year and basically covers the cost of entry fees to the various leagues and championships

entered and winter training.

All other expenses related to the section have to be raised elsewhere. This covers the cost of

equipment (footballs, sliotars, nets, cones, jerseys, bibs etc), referees fees, and the odd social

event for the players etc. As a result the total cost of running the section has averaged €48k

per year over the last 3 years.

This year Juvenile Boys group raised over 17k through various fundraising activities during

the year. The big challenge for the Juvenile Boys group is to continue to organise successful

fundraising initiatives to raise sufficient funds to cover the expenses of running the section each

year. This requires the continued involvement and support of parents to organise fundraising

events and to support the events organised.
