Report from the Director of eLearning
Dear Parents , Students and
Community Members,
Certificate III in Media:
Game Design and
Animation
The beginning of 2016 saw the
introduction of two VET in Schools
programs offered at Mordialloc
College - Certificate IV in AVIATION
and a Certificate III in Media (Game
Design). We refurbished one of our
computer labs and outfitted it with
custom computers designed for
animation and graphic design.
The program is
taught at the
College, but also
operates under
the auspice of
the Academy of
I n t e r a c t i v e
Entertainment (AIE). Industry
professionals working with AIE visit
the school multiple times a year to
help teach and assess students, and
the class visits the AIE facilities for
workshops and training.
Students begin a
Certificate II in
C r e a t i v e
Industries in the
first year, which
then moves into a
Certificate III in
Media in the second year. The first
year of the course is designed to
introduce students to the many career
opportunities available for 3D artists,
animators and designers. This course
gives student an understanding of the
creative potential of the 3D animation
software used in the games, film and
visual effects industry. Students learn
skills in 3D modelling, rendering,
animation, lighting and short movie
production. In second year, students
learn how to develop a game from
initial concept to playable demo. Using
the Unity 3D game engine or Unreal
Engine, art, and scripts students
design gameplay mechanics and
refine them while learning the entire
development pipeline.
Numbers are capped at 20 students
per year of the course, so contact
Jane Jamieson and get in early if you
are interested in undertaking the
course in 2017.

Digital Safety and
Filtering
Mordialloc College had recently made
a significant upgrade to our network
and internet filtering by implementing
the specialised service, CyberHound.
This service not only provides an
unparalleled level of internet filtering,
ensuring safer access for students and
staff alike, but enables the College
maximise its use of technologies for
learning by offering smart caching
options, customisable filters for
classes and time periods, and fine
control over social media and
applications run through the College
network. It will enhance the College’s
bandwidth use as well as the
implementation of our learning
management systems.
As CyberHound will need to be
tweaked and adjusted for our unique
purposes and uses, we encourage
students and parents alike to let the
College know of any access issues it
may inadvertently cause. Please feel

Reminder: Tech-free Tuesdays and
Thursdays in the Hub
A reminder that the Hub is now a ‘tech-free’ zone on Tuesdays
and Thursdays. In an effort to help students establish healthy
attitudes towards technology, they will not be able to use
electronic devise in the Hub during recess and lunch on these
days. Instead, we encourage students to engage in social
activities, play board games, complete puzzles or simply read
books.

你好!(Hello!)
Last Friday the year 7 cohort was privileged enough to participate in an informative and entertaining incursion lead by guides from the Chinese Museum. We all participated in three varying activities to cater for and entertain all interests.
We partook in an artistic and creative activity which involved constructing an extravagant and colourful
Chinese dragon or 大龙. In the process we investigated
the origins of Melbourne's own celebratory dragon and explored the fascinating history surrounding it. By the end we had produced a fantastic dragon that seemed almost three dimensional, brought to life startlingly by the magnificent hues it exhibited.
The second activity we engaged in was thoroughly enjoyable for all those with and without kinaesthetic talent. The entire group was brought to their feet by the multicultural melodies that resounded throughout the Learning Centre. We mirrored the fun movements
of Tai chi or 太极拳 whilst reciting basic vocabulary.
The final activity we completed included a fascinating display of the most significant and revolutionary inventions throughout Chinese history. We investigated the four great inventions of Ancient China in particular which included paper, the compass, printing and gun powder. It was intriguing to discover the mythological legends that accompanied each momentous accomplishment.
On behalf of all the Year 7 students we would like to express our gratitude towards our activity guides from the Chinese Museum. It was an extremely fun and educational experience that we'd all be honoured to repeat someday. But for now...

PERSONAL BEST INTEGRITY RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY
Recently my Legal Studies class went to
both the Supreme and County Courts to
experience what it is like in the court system from
every point of view, including the Judge, the Judge's
Assistant, the accused and more. We were able to watch a
case in both the Supreme and County Courts. While we
were watching the Supreme Court case, we saw the
empanelment of the jury; starting with 50 potential jurors
until they had selected the final 13 as well as them being
sworn in. While we were in the County Court we had the
opportunity to talk with a Judge about her role and the
legal system. We also got to watch some of a case that
had already begun, so the jury was already selected and
the prosecutor and the defence lawyer were asking
questions of the police officer in charge of the
investigation. It was very interesting and informative to see
what it is like to be involved in the courts and how the jury
is selected.

A DAY AT THE MOVIES
SUNDAY 19 JUNE
Partners in Parenting is a new online parenting program that has been shown to help improve parent-child
communication and reduce family conflict. Through interactive online activities, parents can develop skills in
emotional intelligence, supporting their teenager through difficulties they face, and maintaining a close relationship
with their teen. This program was developed by
researchers at Monash University and the University of Melbourne, and is based on Parenting Guidelines that were
published in partnership with beyondblue, and have been
accessed and found helpful by thousands of parents worldwide.
Researchers are currently evaluating the longer-term
benefits of the program by offering parents in Australia the opportunity to try it for free. If you are a parent or
guardian of a child aged 12 to 15, you may be eligible to participate. Participation will take a few hours of yours and
your child’s time over 12 months. Both you and your child
will be reimbursed for your time.
Find out more or register at
www.partnersinparenting.net.au,

It has been brought to our attention that one of our residential neighbours is constantly having their parked car hit by cars backing out of the angle parking spots in Attenborough Street.
If you are parking in this area please be aware of parked cars and please be courteous if you happen to hit one.
Thank you for your consideration.

School Holiday Period, Police Increase Of
Patrols In Areas With High Public
Attendance
Victoria Police wish each and every student all the best with their study and pending exams this year. As the school holidays approach with the anticipation of a well-deserved break, I would urge students that for any activity planned, to consider how it may affect you, your future and others in the community.
Your safety and well-being is most important. Have a good time with friends but be mindful that certain
actions can leave a lasting legacy. Secure your personal property (mobile phones, wallets, purses and lap tops) and remind your parents not to leave valuables in their vehicles. You do not need the hassle in notifying people and replacing your personal identification cards. Do not be influenced by others into stealing or drug use. A criminal conviction can affect your chances for future overseas travel and employment. Think before you act.
It is well documented that shopping centres such as Westfield Southland attract a large number of youths, during the holiday period for various
reasons. The location has a number of appealing factors for example the Kingston Youth Centre, Village Cinemas and of course the shopping.
I would like to take this opportunity to advise students to be vigilant over the holiday break, having regard for your own safety, your property and belongings. Please ensure that you do not leave your bags unattended as this may assist a thief.
Be aware that Victoria Police target areas where there is an increase of public attendances over the school holiday period by increasing Uniform and Plain Clothes Police Patrols. We encourage young people to avoid situations where they may be
pressured to engage in poor decision making and ask that you consider the consequences of your actions. Avoid poor decision making by removing yourself from harm or from situations which may result in police involvement.
Victoria Police would like to ensure students and schools alike, return to the start of the new term happy and refreshed.
