The department, which is largely professional in its orientation, is one of 106 departments or schools of journalism in the United States with national accreditation and is among the leaders in its emphasis on ethics and quality writing. More than half of its classes are “writing-intensive,” and most call for more writing than that designation requires. Students are encouraged to work for Ka Leo O Hawai‘i, the campus newspaper, and to participate in the department’s extensive program of professional internships, many of which offer pay as well as valuable experience. The Academic ProgramFounded in 1965, the Library and Informa-tion Science (LIS) Program preparesprofessionals for work in libraries andother types of information-handlingagencies. It currently offers a master’s inlibrary and information science (MLISc)and a Certificate in Advanced Library andInformation Science and participates in anInterdisciplinary doctoral program incommunication and information sciences.The LIS program is aware of the opportu-nities and the responsibilities inherent inits Pacific setting and the unique culturalamalgam of Hawai’i. Its major goals are:

1. To furnish students with the knowl-edge, skills, and attitudes that are basicto professional competence and career-long professional growth in the field oflibrary and information services.

2. To expand the knowledge base of theprofession through research.

3. To share its resources by extendingservices to the University of Hawai’iand its academic units and to thepeople of Hawai’i and beyond.

Graduate StudyMaster’s DegreeThe MLISc degree program was firstaccredited by the American LibraryAssociation in 1967 and was reaccreditedin 1974, 1980, 1986, and 1996. Thecurriculum is subject to continuousreview and modification, and every effortis made in academic advising to ensurethat students plan programs of studysuited to their individual goals. Enteringstudents are expected to be computerliterate. Graduate standing is the normalprerequisite for all courses.

Plan A (Thesis)The normal requirement for the MLIScdegree under the thesis option is aminimum of 42 credit hours of approvedgraduate study. At least 27 credits must betaken in LIS courses or a combination ofLIS and approved Information andComputer Sciences courses. In addition, 3credit hours in LIS 695 Seminar inResearch in Librarianship and 6 credithours in LIS 700 Thesis Research must betaken. No directed reading credits areallowed as part of thesis research.

General examination is not requiredfor admission to candidacy. Aftercompleting 15 credits of course work,students are advanced to candidacyupon the recommendation of theprogram’s graduate faculty. The oralexamination is not required, butresearch results will be presented at astudent-faculty colloquium.

Plan B (Non-thesis)The normal requirement for the MLIScdegree under the non-thesis option is aminimum of 42 credit hours of approvedgraduate study. At least 36 credits must betaken in LIS courses or in a combinationof LIS and approved ICS courses. Up to 6credits may be taken in other schools orcolleges when the courses are relevant tothe individual student’s specialization andapproved by the LIS program chair andthe Graduate Division.

The maximum course load is 15 credithours per term. Therefore, 42 credithours would require at least two termsand a summer. A full load is a minimum of8 credit hours per term. The programmay be undertaken on a part-time basisbut must be completed within fiveyears (a two-year extension is allowedby the Graduate Division for a total ofseven years).

Students who were in MLISc-degreeprograms from other ALA-accreditedlibrary programs may, in special circum-stances, transfer up to 21 credit hourstoward their MLISc degree at UH Manoa,provided the work to be credited hasbeen completed within the time limitpreviously cited. Such requests must beincluded in the application.

Comprehensive ExaminationAll Plan B students are required to take anoral comprehensive examination as arequirement for the MLISc degree. Theexamination is taken during the semesterthe student expects to graduate.

Distance EducationThe MLISc program utilizes the Hawai’iInteractive Television System (HITS) todeliver courses to remote sites in the state.LIS has been one of the pioneers oncampus in using this innovative instruc-tional delivery system. It currently offersapproximately 35 percent of its coursesthrough HITS; at least two courses areavailable through HITS each fall and spring.

Summers–Only ProgramStudents may select to enroll in the MLIScprogram exclusively during the summersessions. There are four sessions in thesummer, each three weeks long. Only onecourse may be taken in each three-weeksession. Every effort is made to ensure abalanced selection of courses during thesummers. The deadline for the summers-only program is April 1 of each year. Thesummers-only program is not open tointernational students.

Doctoral DegreeInterdisciplinary Doctoral DegreeProgramLIS participates in an interdisciplinaryPhD program in communication andinformation sciences (CIS) integratingcomputer science, communication,library science, and management informa-tion systems. Because of the broadknowledge base required to support theinterdisciplinary approach, the programalso draws on political science, econom-ics, engineering, operations research, andbehavioral sciences. This unique programis sponsored by four academic faculties:communication, decision sciences,information and computer sciences, andlibrary and information science.

School Library Media SpecialistCertificationThe LIS program recommends graduatesto the Hawai’i Department of Educationfor certification as school library mediaspecialists. To be eligible, graduates mustmeet the MLISc degree program require-ments and the course requirementsapproved for certification by the Hawai’iDepartment of Education. The NationalAssociation of State Directors of TeacherEducation and Certification (NASDTEC)Standards for Advanced Programs areused in conducting periodic reviews ofthe program.

A student who enters the LIS programto earn this certification must havecompleted a state-approved teachereducation program. For more specific andcurrent information on prerequisites andrequired as well as recommended LIScourses, contact the LIS program chair.

Certificate ProgramThe Certificate in Advanced Library andInformation Science (CALIS) offers twooptions. Option A is available for those

who complete a successful, coherentprogram of specialized study and researchbeyond the MLISc degree. The programallows for specialization 1) applyingcomputer and information technologiesto information environments and 2)extending information management skillsin information system design, evaluation,and the development of user services.

Option B focuses on schoollibrarianship. It allows for specialization in1) applying computer and informationscience technologies in elementary andsecondary school libraries, and 2) extendingcurriculum planning skills in informationliteracy and general literacy instruction.

For both options, students mustcomplete a research paper that meets theapproval of the CALIS Committee andgive an oral presentation of their researchto students and faculty. Students areexpected to remain enrolled eachsemester until the requirements arecompleted. If it is necessary to withdrawtemporarily, students must reapply foradmission within application deadlinesbefore returning. Credits more than fiveyears old cannot be applied to thecertificate requirements; thus, theprogram must be completed in five years.For more specific information onprerequisite and elective courses, contactthe LIS program chair.

The Academic ProgramLinguistics (LING), also called linguisticscience or the science of language, is thestudy of human language, including itsorigin and development into attestedvarieties. Major subfields are grammar(including phonetics, phonology,morphology, syntax, semantics, discourseanalysis, pragmatics, and the relationbetween writing and speech), historicallinguistics, sociolinguistics and dialectol-ogy, psycholinguistics (including develop-mental psycholinguistics and neuro-linguistics), mathematical and computa-tional linguistics, ethnographic linguistics,stylistics, and poetics.

Because of the unique properties oflanguage among human capacities andinstitutions, students majoring in linguis-tics acquire a vantage point for formulat-ing and testing views about basic ques-tions that arise in one form or another inall of the human sciences, as well as themetalanguage used by all scholars dealingwith language. Major applications includelanguage planning, language teaching,speech synthesis and recognition,treatment of language disorders, repair ofcommunication breakdowns, andinformation technology. Our programpresents unique opportunities for thestudy of Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian)linguistics and for access to speakers ofPacific and Asian languages. It is alsoespecially strong in computationallexicography, ethnolinguistics, languageacquisition, and pidgin and creole studies.

The program is recognized as one ofthe top 25 in the United States.

AdvisingAll faculty in the department participatein the advising of students majoring inlinguistics. Undergraduates majoring inlinguistics under liberal studies areadvised initially by the department chair.Graduate majors are advised by the chairof the graduate field of study. Students arelater assigned to other faculty members asadvisers according to their special interests.

Undergraduate StudyBachelor’s DegreeStudents may major in linguistics for theBA degree at the University through theLiberal Studies Program. In this program,students create for themselves a majorequivalent with the guidance of a facultyadviser. The major equivalent maycombine the study of linguistics with thatof one or more foreign languages or withrelated disciplines, such as anthropologyor psychology. Students majoring inlinguistics in this way may include someor all of the MA core of courses in theirBA programs and are thus able to do moreadvanced work in their later MA program.

Graduate StudyThe faculty represents a variety oftheoretical viewpoints. The variousfaculty members are especially qualifiedto direct research on languages of thePacific and parts of Asia. Fields of specialcompetence include descriptive andcomparative linguistics, general linguistictheory, language contact and variation,ethnolinguistics, language development,and language data processing. In addition,the department faculty and cooperatingfaculty in fields such as Asian languagesand literature, English, English as a secondlanguage, and European languages andliterature supervise work in appliedlinguistics. Research, upon approval bythe student’s dissertation committee, mayalso include studies of language use ineducation, law, or other institutions ofsociety; social and cultural influences onlanguage acquisition and use; bilingual-ism, multilingualism, foreign accent, andtranslation; and the interrelations oflanguage and literacy.

Although the Department of Linguis-tics is primarily a graduate departmentand is thus focused mainly on research, itrecognizes that many graduates willeventually seek teaching positions and

would be more likely to obtain one if theycan provide evidence of teachingexperience in linguistics or a language-related field.

Accordingly, the department requireseach student enrolled in either the MA orPhD program, in addition to the 30 and 33credits required, respectively, for thecompletion of those degrees, to have atleast 1 credit of LING 699 (DirectedResearch) or 799 (Apprenticeship inTeaching Linguistics) that involves teachinga linguistics or language-related course(such as a foreign language course) underthe supervision of a faculty member eitherat the University or, by special arrange-ment, at another institution.

Students may be excused from thisrequirement if they have already had anequivalent teaching experience beforecoming into the program. In addition, thechair of the graduate field of study maywaive this requirement if it is determinedthat the student was unable to obtain anappropriate teaching appointmentthrough no fault of his or her own andthat no suitable alternative was available.

Students admitted to graduate pro-grams in linguistics normally have abackground in at least one foreignlanguage. Some background in mathemat-ics or one of the sciences is also useful.Students without a course equivalent toLING 320 are required to take this courseto make up for this deficiency in theirpreparation for graduate work.

The GRE General Test is required of allapplicants.

The MA program provides a basicintroduction to the subject matter andskills of the discipline. The PhD programprovides full professional training forcareers in research and teaching. Employ-ment opportunities for graduates of bothprograms today often require additionalknowledge of one or more relateddisciplines. For example, there areopenings in anthropology and ESLdepartments for persons trained inlinguistics and anthropology. Students are,therefore, encouraged to broaden theirtraining in linguistics by including work inother disciplines. Such programs, andthose that include many of the specializa-tions previously listed, will involve theinclusion of faculty members from otherfields of study on students’ programcommittees. Students should make knowntheir interests to the chair as early aspossible so that appropriate advisers canbe chosen to direct students to courses,and any key prerequisite courses, that will

help them explore their interests further.It is also possible for students to includeconcentrations in linguistics in theirprograms for the MA degree in Asianstudies or Pacific Islands studies.

The courses listed below are offered toguide students in their preparation for thevarious examinations, although individualstudy must be done in areas not coveredby course offerings. Linguistics coursesbearing 700-level numbers are seminars,and various sections of these seminars aretypically offered in a given semester,depending on the interests of the residentfaculty and students. Each semester thereare normally a number of seminarsdealing with geographical areas, particularlanguage families, the structures ofindividual languages, and particulartheoretical problems. A major portion ofthe work done beyond the MA level is inseminars and in directed research.

Master’s DegreeRequirementsStudents must complete LING 410, 420,421, 422, 615, 645 (or their equivalents),and at least one 700-level seminar.

The department offers the MA Plan A,Plan B, and Plan C programs. In additionto the University-wide residence require-ment of a minimum of two semesters offull-time work, all three programs requirethat students demonstrate competence inone language other than their nativelanguage.

Plan A requires a thesis (12 credithours) and a minimum of 18 credit hoursof course work. A final oral examinationcovering the thesis and related areas isalso required.

Plan B requires a minimum of 30 credithours and a final seminar presentationnear the end of the course work. Thetopic and format of the seminar must beapproved in advance by the graduate chair.

Plan C requires a final examinationwith both written and oral portions. PlanC is open to selected students with someprevious work in linguistics who showboth high potential for scholarly develop-ment and the motivation and disciplinenecessary for an independent course ofstudy. A committee of faculty is appointedfor each prospective student for Plan C.The committee administers a generalexamination during the student’s firstsemester of study to determine theappropriateness of Plan C, advises thestudent in developing a program of study,and administers the final examination.

Doctoral DegreeRequirementsStudents in the PhD program are requiredto complete a minimum of 33 credit hoursof course and seminar work at theUniversity of Hawai‘i (exclusive of LING800) beyond those counted toward theirMA degrees (or, for students not holding anMA, beyond those specified for the MA asabove). Courses in field methods (LING630), phonology (LING 621), and grammar(LING 622) are required of all PhD students.

PhD students must pass a preliminaryexamination, a comprehensive examina-tion, and a final oral examination indefense of the dissertation. The prelimi-nary examination is normally taken at apoint soon after the completion of thecore of courses required for the MA. Itconsists of two parts, the first of which isa written examination. Students areencouraged to form their PhD programcommittees in consultation with thegraduate chair as soon as possible afterthey have completed this part. Thesecond part of the PhD preliminaryexamination is fulfilled by having a paperwritten by the student accepted fordissemination in the departmentalWorking Papers series or published in anacceptable form elsewhere. Both parts ofthe preliminary examination are waivedfor those students receiving the MA underPlan A who also have their thesesaccepted for publication in an outletagreed to beforehand by the linguisticsfaculty. Students hoping to have theirtheses published under this latterprovision are required, before submittingtheir theses for publication, to identify thepublication outlet (or sequence of outlets)to which they plan to submit their thesesand, for each outlet, to provide as muchbackground information as possible,including the names of the editorial board,stated review policies, a list of recentlypublished titles, and other relevantbibliographic information. The faculty willreview the proposed outlets and indicatewhich, if any, it finds acceptable.

The preliminary examination is offeredonce each semester, in August andJanuary. The exam consists of foursections: general linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, phonology, andgrammar-syntax. Students must take allfour sections when they first take theexam. They are given the advantage ofaveraging among the four to achieve anaverage pass. Students who do not pass allfour sections need retake only thosesections they did not pass; their best

scores on each section will be averaged toachieve an average pass. This examinationmust be passed within two attempts.

Students must also demonstratecompetence in two languages other thantheir native language. One of the languagesmust be in the “research tool” category.

A “research-tool language” should beone of the major languages of the worldin which there is ample publishedmaterial on linguistic topics: Chinese,English, French, German, Japanese,Russian, or Spanish. Students shoulddemonstrate their ability to read linguisticmaterials in one of these languages. Theywill be expected to take the usualreading/translation test in the chosenlanguage. (Foreign students may useEnglish if it is not their native language,and they will be considered as havingsatisfied this requirement when the EnglishLanguage Institute certifies them as exemptfrom taking any further ELI courses.)

If a student can demonstrate thatanother language would be an appropri-ate language as his or her research-tool,that language may be approved by thechair of the graduate field as a “research-tool language” for that student. Forexample, Dutch may be an appropriate“research tool language” for a studentwho is working with Dutch materialsdealing with the languages of Indonesia.

The other language may be anylanguage, including any of the designatedresearch languages. It may also beAmerican Sign Language or any otherlanguage for which a qualified examinercan be found in Hawai‘i. The additionallanguage is required of doctoral candi-dates in linguistics to encourage someincreased breadth of language back-ground beyond that provided by theresearch-tool requirement and as suchdoes not include the same reading/translation requirement. Accordingly,students may satisfy the second languagerequirement by demonstrating a certaindegree of speaking proficiency andknowledge of the structure of thelanguage. Passing a fourth semesterforeign language course (e.g., Japanese202) with a grade of B or better will bedeemed sufficient to satisfy this require-ment. Alternatively, students may take aplacement test to demonstrate that theyhave the equivalent of four semesters ofthe language.

Students are admitted to candidacyafter demonstrating competence in bothlanguages and performing successfully onthe comprehensive examination.

The comprehensive examination isboth written and oral. Students areexpected to demonstrate expertise inthree areas of specialization chosen fromamong the following: phonologicaltheory, syntactic theory, phonetics,semantics, morphology, language in itssocial and cultural context, pragmatics,psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics,discourse analysis, computationallinguistics, language acquisition, languagelearning and teaching, language planning,multilingualism, pidgin and creole studies,translation, typology and universals,lexicography, or the linguistics of any ofthe following areal or genetic groupings:Austroasiatic, Austronesian, Chinese,English, Indo-European, Japanese, Korean,Sino-Tibetan, or Tai. Related disciplinesmay also be designated as areas ofspecialization. These particulars aredetermined when a student’s doctoralcommittee is formed, after the preliminaryexamination has been passed.

To gain approval of dissertation topics,students are expected to develop detailedwritten proposals and defend themsuccessfully in oral examinations con-ducted by their committees. In addition totraditional dissertation topics of a theoreti-cal, descriptive, or historical nature, thefaculty is open to topics in appliedlinguistics, when it can be demonstratedthat the project will add to the knowledgeof language, broadly conceived. Researchmay include studies of language use ineducation, law, or other institutions ofsociety; social and cultural influences onlanguage acquisition and use; bilingualism,multilingualism, foreign accent, andtranslation; the interrelations of languageand literacy; etc. Although many suchtopics can also be treated within disci-plines such as anthropology, psychology,literature, and pedagogy, when presentedfor the PhD in linguistics they areexpected to have a linguistic perspectiveand to make a distinctive linguisticcontribution. The decision as to whethersuch expectations are met is here, aselsewhere, made by the student’sdissertation committee. Committees forapplied topics will include members drawnfrom the faculties of closely related andcooperating fields of study such as Asianlanguages and literatures, English, Englishas a second language, and Europeanlanguages and literature. Students wishingto explore such areas are encouraged toinclude relevant courses beyond thoserequired for the MA as electives early intheir program.

The Academic ProgramThe mathematics (MATH) program offerspreparation in the full spectrum ofmathematical sciences, including algebra,geometry, differential equations, real andcomplex analysis, logic, number theory,and probability and statistics, as well asvarious topics in applied mathematics.Mathematics majors begin with the study

of calculus and linear algebra. Aftercompletion of these fundamental courses,students may choose to specialize. Thedepartment advises each prospectivemajor on requirements and course optionsto meet his or her needs and interests.Departmental advisers are also availableevery day to all students.

Depending upon individual interest,students of mathematics may pursuecareers in a variety of fields such asteaching, computer science, operationsresearch, statistics, business, and econom-ics. Graduate StudyProspective graduate students areexpected to have adequate undergraduatepreparation in linear algebra, advancedcalculus, and abstract algebra. Applicantsmust submit to the department theirscores for the GRE General Test; appli-cants for the graduate assistant positionsare strongly encouraged to submit scoresfor the subject test in mathematics aswell. The department requires a score ofat least 650 on the quantitative section ofthe GRE General Test for admittance as aregular student. The department requires ageneral examination of all incominggraduate students for course placementpurposes. This diagnostic examinationconsists of two parts, algebra and analysis,and is designed to evaluate the student’scommand of undergraduate mathematicsin the areas of linear algebra, advancedcalculus, and abstract algebra.

Master’s DegreeRequirements

The department does not have a thesisoption (Plan A) for the MA, and moststudents will select Plan B. An exceptionalstudent may be admitted to Plan C at thediscretion of the graduate chair. Plan Cdoes not require a specific number of

credit hours, but Plan C students arerequired to pass an oral examination inaddition to the written master’s exam.

Doctoral DegreeRequirements

For the PhD degree, the departmentrequires that the student show proficiencyin two of the following languages: French,German, Russian, or a computer language.Teaching experience is required of all PhDstudents. To be admitted to PhD candidacy,the student must satisfy the languagerequirements and pass three writtenexaminations: (a) linear algebra andabstract algebra; (b) real analysis and thebasic facts of complex analysis and generaltopology; and (c) a third field chosen bythe student with the approval of thegraduate chair. All new students in thePhD program shall complete a minimumof five mathematics department coursesnumbered between 600 and 690, otherthan 611, 612, 621, 631, 632, 644, 645,649. These five courses may be takenunder the CR/NC option. Exceptions: Upto two 3-credit 649 (alpha) seminars(meeting three hours/week) may besubstituted for (up to) two of theserequired five courses, with the writtenapproval of the graduate chair. Also, withthe written approval of the graduatechair, credit may be given for equivalentcourses taken in another mathematicsdepartment or for graduate-level coursestaken in another department that arerecommended by the student’s thesisadviser and directly related to thedissertation topic; such credit forgraduate courses taken in anotherdepartment is limited to a total of nomore than two courses.

The Academic ProgramMicrobiology (MICR) deals with micro-scopic forms of life and their activities.Bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa, and virusesare included in this discipline. The field isdiverse and concerns the nature ofmicroorganisms, as well as their interac-tions—both advantageous and adverse—with other organisms and with theenvironment. Entire academic disciplinesand commercial enterprises are based onwhat microorganisms do. For example, thevery forms that may cause infectiousdiseases and epidemics may also supportindustries that produce vaccines orantimicrobial agents. Microorganisms playan essential role in the cycling of thelimited supply of nutrients available onEarth’s surface by decomposing plantresidues and animal remains and by beingprimary producers of food in the oceans.Many microorganisms or their productsmay be eaten, drunk, used as fuel, orcarefully disposed of as undesirable. Theymay be used to clean up the environmentor controlled only with great effort toprevent corrosive, obnoxious, or destruc-tive activities that they may bring about.Microbiology also deals with the physiol-ogy, biochemistry, genetics, and molecularbiology of microorganisms. Many of theadvances in DNA technology are mediatedthrough bacteria, yeasts, and viruses; muchof what we know about metabolism ingeneral comes from their study.

Graduate StudyThe department offers programs leadingto the MS and PhD in microbiology withareas of specialization in microbialecology, biochemistry, physiology,genetics, and ultrastructure; metabolicregulation and the regulation of geneexpression; medical microbiology; animaland environmental virology and viralpathobiology; and immunology, immuno-genetics, and immunochemistry. Inaddition, an option is offered in cellbiology that leads to the MS and PhD inmicrobiology. Research programs ininterdisciplinary fields are possible.

Applicants for advanced degreeprograms in the department mustsupplement the forms and transcriptsrequired by the Graduate Division withthree letters of recommendation and theofficial scores from the GRE General Testand the subject test in biology. Thesesupplementary items should be sentdirectly to the department.

Courses for the graduate programs areto be selected from the list below andfrom other graduate offerings in relateddisciplines as directed by the student’sadviser or advising committee. Thefollowing courses may be repeated: MICR625, 632, 661, 671, 680, 681, 690, 699, 700,795, and 800. However, repeated coursesother than MICR 690, 699, 700, 795, and800 may only be used for credit once perdegree. MICR 690 is a required course.

Required courses for the cell biologyemphasis (MS) are MICR 461, 641, 690,and 699, plus courses in biochemistry andbiophysics.

Potential degree candidates are requiredto take a diagnostic exam (MS) or a quali-fying exam (PhD). Course deficiencies shallbe made up before admission to candidacy.

Master’s DegreeIntended candidates for the MS degreeshould present a minimum undergraduatepreparation in biological and physical

sciences including biology, genetics,microbiology, organic chemistry, physics,and calculus. Deficiencies in some ofthese areas do not preclude admission.Qualified students with undergraduatemajors in fields other than microbiologyare welcome.

RequirementsThe prospective MS candidate may selecteither the Plan A or Plan B program.Under Plan A, 30 credit hours must becompleted. These comprise 14 credithours of course work in classes above the600 level (including no more than 2 credithours of MICR 699), 1 credit hour ofseminar (MICR 690), at least 9 credithours in classes 400 level and above, andup to 6 credit hours for thesis(MICR 700). For a detailed explanation,refer to the department bulletin.

Under Plan B the 30 credit hourscomprise at least 18 credit hours at the600 level, including one seminar andexcluding directed research. A minimumof 6 credit hours of directed research(MICR 699) is also required. In Plan B, sixof eight areas of a comprehensiveexamination must be passed. Areascovered in the exam include generalmicrobiology, medical microbiology,microbial physiology, microbial ecology,genetics, virology, immunology, andultrastructure. Doctoral DegreeThe doctoral degree (PhD) is offered inmicrobiology in the various areas ofinterest represented by research programsof the department’s graduate faculty. Inaddition, the doctorate may be obtainedjointly through microbiology and the cell,molecular, and neurosciences (CMNS)program or the marine biology (graduate)program.

Intended candidates for the PhDdegree are expected to possess the MSdegree in microbiology or to be able topass at least four sections of the MScomprehensive examination.

RequirementsThe PhD candidate must demonstrate theability to do original experimentalresearch and to produce an acceptabledissertation. A comprehensive examina-tion, written and oral, is required, and thedissertation must be successfully de-fended before the faculty. At least oneyear of experience in teaching in alaboratory course is considered part of thetraining of the PhD candidate. The

Admission RequirementsApplicants for admission to the master’sdegree program must have an undergraduatedegree with a major in music or a bachelor’sdegree and evidence of an equivalentmusical background; three letters ofrecommendation; and, for non-nativespeakers of English, a TOEFL score of 500minimum for performance or 540 for otherconcentrations. Two copies of all transcriptsshould be sent with the application. In thefollowing concentrations, these additionalrequirements must be met:

1. Ethnomusicology—Background incultural anthropology is desirable and,depending on the thesis research, maybe required.

2. Music Education—Minimum of one yearof full-time music teaching experience ina public or private school.

3. Composition—Three original scoresrepresentative of various forms and media.

4. Performance—An audition of worksrepresentative of various musical styles.An applicant not residing in Hawai‘imust submit an unedited tape recordingcomparable in scope and length to anin-person audition and, if admitted, willaudition before the departmentadmissions faculty before registering forthe first semester of residency toascertain appropriate placement in thecurriculum sequence. A recentUniversity of Hawai‘i at Manoa graduatemay be admitted without a hearing ifthe BMus senior recital is considered tobe of high enough quality by themajority of the department admissionsfaculty.

Prior to enrolling for the first semesterof study, each classified graduate studentwill take a diagnostic examination inmusic history (part I) and theory (part II).Students in ethnomusicology and perfor-mance are also tested in their area ofconcentration (part III). The content of thediagnostic examination consists of materialnormally included in the work required fora bachelor’s degree. The purpose of thisexamination is twofold: (a) to assess thestudent’s background and determine ifthere are deficiencies that should beremedied and (b) to assist the adviser andthe student in planning a program of study.Detailed information about the examina-tion is available on request.

Before being admitted to candidacy fora degree, each graduate student must passthe department’s general examination,which consists of three parts: musichistory, theory, and the student’s area ofconcentration. Successful performance onspecific parts of the diagnostic examina-tion exempts the student from theequivalent parts of the general examina-tion. Parts I and II of the general examina-tion must be taken prior to enrolling forthe second semester of study. All parts ofthe general examination must be passedbefore the student earns 18 credit hourstoward the degree. Credits earned inexcess of this limit will not be counted ifthey are earned before all three parts ofthe general examination are passed.When any part of the general examinationis not passed, the student must take thatpart again the next time it is offered. Ifthe examination is not taken, a failure willbe reported; students failing the examina-tion a second time will be dropped fromthe program. Any exceptions to theseprocedures must receive prior approvalby petition to the graduate faculty.

When all portions of the generalexamination have been passed, thestudent will be advanced to candidacy.

Some concentrations require languagecompetence:

1. Ethnomusicology—A reading orspeaking knowledge of a foreignlanguage relevant to the thesisresearch (or equivalent competence inlinguistics).

2. Musicology—A reading knowledge ofFrench or German.

3. Theory—A reading knowledge ofFrench, German, or Latin.

4. Music Education—Language appropri-ate to the area of research or researchstatistics.

Degree RequirementsPlan A requires a minimum of 30 credithours, 22 in course work and 8 of thesis,and is taken by candidates concentratingin ethnomusicology, music education,musicology, theory, and composition.(Candidates in music education maychoose either Plan A or Plan B, describedbelow.) An ethnomusicology thesis isusually based on fieldwork. Compositionstudents must compose an original workin one of the larger forms, plus write adetailed essay on the background andproblems involved or a detailed theoreti-cal analysis of the work.

Plan B also requires a minimum of 30credit hours but does not include a thesis.This plan is taken by candidates inperformance and is an option for candi-dates in music education.

Plan B students in music education willbe required to fulfill the followingrequirements:

1. A comprehensive three-hour examina-tion, exhibiting strength in writtenexpression and a grasp of the essen-tials of the broad field of musiceducation; and

2. A project or paper about some specificaspect of music education whose sizeand scope will be determined by thestudent and the faculty memberdirecting the project.

Under Plan A, the oral final examina-tion is arranged by the student inconsultation with the thesis committee,usually during the semester in which allcourse work has been completed andafter the student has completed the thesisdocument. Copies of the document mustbe presented to the committee at leasttwo weeks prior to the examination. Atthe examination, the student’s knowledgeand understanding of the field of concen-tration are examined with emphasis onthe content of the thesis.

Candidates concentrating in perfor-mance are required to give a publicrecital. Additionally, in the recitalsemester and before the recital date, thestudent will meet with the recitalcommittee for a one-hour oral examina-tion to discuss historical and analyticalaspects of the works to be performed inthe graduate recital.

Doctoral ProgramThe department offers programs leadingto the PhD in music with concentrationsin composition, music education,ethnomusicology, and musicology.

Admission RequirementsApplicants for admission to the PhDprogram must present a master’s degree inmusic (in the area of emphasis) orequivalent, an excellent academic record(two copies of all college transcripts),three confidential letters of recommenda-tion on forms provided by the musicdepartment, a sample of academic writingproficiency such as recent term papers, aGRE General Test score, and, for non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL scoreof 560 or better. Application forms areavailable at the music department or theGraduate Division. The completed formsshould be submitted with two copies of alltranscripts by February 1 for the followingfall semester and by September 1 for thefollowing spring semester.

In the following concentrations, theseadditional requirements must be met:

1. Composition—A master’s degree incomposition or the equivalent in termsof course work and original composi-tion; a score of one large-scale work;scores of two shorter works; and a tapeof at least one of the above.

2. Ethnomusicology—A major researchpaper in ethnomusicology as evidenceof extensive background in musicaltraditions other than Western art music.

3. Musicology—A master’s degree inmusicology or a minimum of fourgraduate seminars in musicology, and a7,500-word research paper in Englishon a subject in historical musicology.

4. Music Education—A minimum of twoyears full-time music teaching in apublic or private school; three lettersof recommendation on the applicant’steaching ability, at least two of whichmust be written by the applicant’s jobsupervisor (principal or other supervi-sor); and one of the following: (a) avideotape of a teaching demonstration(or actual teaching), or (b) an in-personteaching demonstration.

If a student laterwishes to change to another concentra-tion, the student must petition thegraduate faculty in music for approval.Each student will have a principal adviserwho must be a member of the musicdepartment’s graduate faculty. Anapplication will be denied if it isdetermined that no principal adviser inthe applicant’s area of interest isavailable on the music department’sgraduate faculty.

Degree RequirementsThis degree requires an emphasis onethnomusicology courses for studentswho are not concentrating in the area ofethnomusicology. This emphasis ensuresthat all PhD graduates will be able toteach introductory courses in worldmusic. Requirements for music PhDstudents also include MUS 659 Seminar inCollege Music Teaching, followed bysupervised college teaching experiences.

The PhD student must spend threesemesters in residence (full-time work orthe equivalent in credit hours) at UHManoa and must complete the degreewithin seven years.

Language Requirements. Beforeadvancing to candidacy, reading profi-ciency must be satisfactorily demon-strated as follows:

1. Ethnomusicology—One dissertationresearch language and one libraryresearch language.

2. Music Education—Language appropri-ate to the areas of research or researchstatistics.

3. Musicology—Two European lan-guages: German and one otherlanguage, preferably French.

Diagnostic and Qualifying Exams.Prior to enrolling for the first semester ofstudy, each PhD applicant will take adiagnostic exam in music history, theory,and the major area of research (if it isethnomusicology) to determine whether ornot proficiency equivalent to that of amaster’s level is met in each of these areas.A successful diagnostic exam will count asthe qualifying exam in that area. Deficien-cies can be made up either by retesting or,in musicology and ethnomusicology, bycompleting specified courses with a gradeof B or better. Only one failure of thequalifying exam is allowed. A retest isnormally taken the next time the exam isscheduled. Deferral of the retest mustreceive prior approval by the graduate

chair. (The student submits a petition tothe graduate chair no less than five weeksbefore the exam date.) All deficiencies mustbe made up by the end of the first year.

An advisory committee, made up ofthree graduate music faculty membersand approved by the graduate chair, willconsider the test results in advising thestudent to begin the program. Thestudent’s principal adviser, appointed bythe graduate chair, serves as the chair ofthis committee.

Comprehensive Exam and Advanc-ing to Candidacy. This exam is given tomeasure the student’s readiness to beginsignificant research in the selected majorarea of research. It is given only aftersuccessful completion of course work,fulfillment of residency requirements,successful completion of all languagerequirements, and notice from the advisorycommittee that the student is judged to besufficiently prepared to pass this examina-tion. This is a two-part exam consisting of awritten portion and a two-hour oralportion, passed or failed as a whole. Astudent failing this exam may retake theexam once, but this must be done withinone year. Passing this exam enables thestudent to begin the dissertation processand receive a certificate from the Univer-sity indicating that all requirements of thedoctorate except for the dissertation havebeen completed. Following the compre-hensive exam, the formation of a five-member doctoral committee, and submis-sion and approval of a dissertation proposal,the student is advanced to candidacy.

After this occurs, all that remains isfieldwork (for ethnomusicology majorsonly), writing of the dissertation, and theoral defense of the dissertation.

Final Oral Examination. Basically adefense of the dissertation, this exam isconducted by the five-member doctoralcommittee, made up of graduate facultymembers appointed by the musicgraduate chair and approved by theGraduate Division dean. The chair of thestudent’s advisory committee normallyserves as the chair of the student’s doctoralcommittee. At least one member must befrom outside the music department, butmusic department members make up themajority. All committee members must bepresent at the exam. (Dissertation propos-als must be approved by this committee.)This exam is subject to other regulationsdetailed in the “Graduate Education”section in this Catalog.

The date of the final oral exam isarranged by the student in consultationwith the doctoral committee; usually, it isduring the semester in which the student

has completed the dissertation document.Copies of the document must be presentedto the committee at least two weeks priorto the examination. At the examination, thestudent’s knowledge and understanding ofthe field of concentration is examinedbased on the content of the dissertation.

The Academic ProgramPeace and conflict education (PACE)studies examines the causes of war andother forms of violence, the nonviolentways to resolve destructive conflicts andengage in peacemaking, and the condi-tions necessary for creating a positivepeace. As an interdisciplinary field, PACEfinds its center in the social sciences, butit also extends to the humanities and thenatural and physical sciences. PACEstudents learn critical thinking related toissues of justice, conflict resolution,security and peace, and steps to effectthese goals, including the making andevaluating of policies.

PACE is an individually designedinterdisciplinary program that is coordi-nated by the Spark M. Matsunaga Institutefor Peace. Students may either complete aBA degree with a major equivalent inpeace and conflict studies through theLiberal Studies Program, or they may earna peace certificate that is available toundergraduate and graduate studentsprior to their graduation from UH Manoa.Both the certificate and major can bedesigned to accommodate the student’spersonal goals and interests.

Students taking these courses go on tocareers in diplomacy (including the UNand its affiliates), Third World aid anddevelopment (research, administration,and fieldwork), mediation services, publicrelations, defense planning, managementoperations, industrial relations, education(teaching and administration), welfareand public interest work, journalism,service industries, and, of course, thefields of peace and conflict research,peace education, and peace advocacy.The development of perspectives andskills in peace, justice, and conflictresolution are relevant in the generalareas of private business, the arts, nationaland international nongovernmentalorganizations, and national, regional andinternational government bodies.

The heads of private and publicbodies, including UH officials, areincreasingly calling for people expert inthe management of conflict. A risingbacklog of court cases, the cost and delayof justice, crime in the streets, domesticviolence, disorder in the schools, ongoingconflict in various workplace settings, andpeople generally unable to cope with thestress of modern living, all contribute to a

pressing need for more peacemakers,mediators, and facilitators capable ofresolving conflict with justice.

An appreciation of the diverse culturalperspectives that Asians and PacificIslanders bring to the study of peace andconflict is featured throughout the PACEprogram. The island of O‘ahu (meaning“the gathering place”) nurtures a richethnic and cultural pluralism thatprovides a unique setting for the studyand practice of peacemaking and thenonviolent resolution of conflict.

The Academic ProgramPhilosophy (PHIL) is an open inquiry thatinvolves the disciplined examination of ourmost comprehensive goals, standards, andcriteria. For example: how should weconduct ourselves in our relations with one

another? (ethics); what standards shouldwe use to assess our institutions? (socialand political theory); how may we achieveknowledge and understanding of the worldaround us? (epistemology, philosophy ofscience); what are the most generalstructures of thought and reality? (philoso-phy of logic and language, metaphysics);and what place does art have, or whatplace should it have, in human life?(aesthetics). In pursuing these questions,philosophy is often led to confront issuesabout the ultimate nature of reality andvalue or to consider possible limitations onour ability to answer or even to ask suchquestions. Philosophy proceeds with itstask in part through contributing toongoing discussions and debates withindisciplines and traditions and also by cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural comparisons.

Students majoring in philosophy workto develop for themselves a comprehen-sive view of the aspirations and achieve-ments of human culture and in theprocess are encouraged to acquire theskills of careful reading and interpretationof texts, of writing that conveys clearlytheir understanding of some issue, and ofresponding critically to ideas that otherpeople advance. The Department ofPhilosophy’s faculty has expertise in anunusually diverse range of philosophictraditions. The faculty includes specialistsin Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Buddhist,and Islamic thought, as well as in many ofthe important Western traditions. Thedepartment as a whole has long beenrecognized internationally for its compara-tive work between philosophic traditions.

Whatever their field of specialization,graduate students in philosophy mustacquire a thorough knowledge of the historyand problems of Western philosophy. Onthe basis of this foundation, students mayfurther specialize in one of three areas ofstudy: Western philosophy, Asian philoso-phy, or comparative philosophy.

Although the Western philosophicaltradition remains the fundamental frameof reference for the department, theopportunity provided for specialization inthe area of Asian philosophy is unique inthat the University of Hawai‘i is the onlyinstitution of higher learning in the UnitedStates with a regular program leading tothe PhD degree with areas of specializa-tion in Indian, Buddhist, Chinese,Japanese, and comparative philosophy.The area of comparative philosophy is themost demanding; at the PhD level itsrequirements include proficiency in boththe Western and Asian fields. Thecandidate is expected to gain a mastery ofsome specific topic that can be ap-proached through the contexts of two ormore philosophic traditions.

All graduate students shall developtheir course of study in consultation withthe chair of the graduate program.

Doctoral DegreeThe doctoral program consists of two stages.The first stage is that leading to admission tocandidacy; the second, to the awarding ofthe degree. Normally the first involves atleast two years of course work beyond theMA in preparation for departmental andlanguage examinations. The second stageinvolves writing a dissertation and passingan oral examination in its defense. Studentsmust attain certification for PhD candi-dacy—that is, fulfill all the requirements forthe PhD except for the writing and oraldefense of the dissertation—within fouryears of admission to the PhD program.

Students are required todemonstrate competence in each of threegeneral areas: history of philosophy, meta-physics, epistemology, logic, and philosophyof science; ethics, aesthetics, social andpolitical philosophy, and philosophy of law.Course listings made available each semesterwill indicate the general area or areas withinwhich each course fits. Students are requiredto pass two examinations in an area related tothe subject matter of their prospectivedissertation, to complete an original disserta-tion, and to pass a final oral dissertationdefense. The Academic ProgramPhysics (PHYS) is the study of matter andenergy and how they interact at the mostbasic levels. Areas include mechanics, opticsand lasers, thermodynamics, electricity,magnetism, nuclear phenomena, condensedmatter, and elementary particles. Physics iswidely regarded as the most basic of all thesciences. The University of Hawai‘i atM¯anoa offers both the bachelor of arts andbachelor of science degrees in physics. Thefaculty members teaching the courses are atthe forefront of research in physics both inexperiment and theory. In the field ofelementary particles, some faculty membersare doing experiments in Japan to detectneutrino oscillations and studying high-energy gamma rays coming from the stars.Others are involved in experiments at theBeijing (China) accelerator and the KEKaccelerator in Japan. In condensed-matterphysics, they investigate novel materials,study electrical noise in composites, probethe exotic phases of liquid crystals, and use ascanning tunneling microscope to takepictures of individual atoms. A new researcheffort in free electron laser (FEL) physics hasbegun, capable of working at the forefront ofmedical research, chemistry, materialscience, or basic physics. Often, theundergraduate physics majors work on theseprojects along with graduate students andthe faculty.

Graduate StudyThis program offers opportunities forstudy and research leading to the MS andPhD degrees in physics. The staff andfacilities are especially aimed towardexperimental and theoretical work inelementary particles, electronic structure ofsolids, liquid crystals, composite materials,low-temperature physics, scanning tunnelingmicroscopy and spectroscopy, and surfacescience.

Intended candidates for the MS or PhD inphysics must present a minimum of 35undergraduate credit hours in physics,including atomic and nuclear physics,

electromagnetism, mechanics, quantummechanics, and thermodynamics. Courses ingeneral chemistry and differential equationsare also required. Official scores of the GREGeneral Test and the subject test in physicsmust be submitted prior to admission.

At least one year of experience as a teach-ing assistant is required of all MS or PhD can-didates. All graduate students are required toattend the weekly departmental seminar.

Master’s DegreeStudents wishing to terminate their formaleducation with the MS degree generallyselect Plan A (thesis) so as to gain someresearch experience, as well as formalclass work. These students are preparedto enter teaching positions at the commu-nity college level or industrial and civilservice positions at the junior scientistand engineer level.

Students planning advanced graduatework generally complete the Plan B (non-thesis) or Plan C (examination) require-ments for the MS degree. At this pointmost of their formal class work has beencompleted and further work consistsmainly of seminars, directed research, andthe dissertation.

RequirementsFor the MS Plan A, students must com-plete 30 credit hours of course work,including (a) a minimum of 18 credithours of physics courses numbered 600 to798, including PHYS 610, 650, 670, and690; (b) minimum of 6 credit hours ofthesis; and (c) approved electives, whichmay be selected from PHYS 699 for amaximum of 2 credit hours and courses inmathematics, chemistry, meteorology,engineering, and philosophy. Othercourses can be included on a case-by-casebasis at the discretion of the departmentchair. A final oral examination covers thethesis and related areas and completes thePlan A requirements.

For the MS Plan B, students mustcomplete 30 credit hours of course work,including (a) a minimum of 18 credithours of physics courses numbered 600 to798, including PHYS 610, 650, 670, and690; and (b) approved electives, as in PlanA. A written qualifying examinationcompletes the Plan B requirements.

For the MS Plan C, only the minimumresidency requirement must be satisfied.Admission to Plan C requires the approvalof the physics graduate program advisorycommittee. A written qualifying examina-tion and a final oral examination completethe requirements for Plan C.

Doctoral DegreeThe PhD degree is essentially a researchdegree. Students complete an original andsignificant piece of research and are at theforefront of one area of physics. Studentsare expected to enter the academic worldin a teaching and research capacity orindustrial and government researchlaboratories as senior scientists.

RequirementsTo be admitted to the PhD program,students must perform satisfactorily on awritten qualifying examination followedby an oral comprehensive examination.The qualifying examination must be takenduring the students’ first five semesters asregular classified graduate students.Students who fail to perform satisfactorilyon the written or oral examinations mayrepeat them the following year. Studentswho fail twice cannot continue in thegraduate program.

In addition to the courses required forthe MS degree, students are responsiblefor the material covered in PHYS 651 and671. A scholarly dissertation must bewritten, and a final oral examination indefense of the dissertation completes therequirements for the PhD.

The Academic ProgramPolitical science (POLS) examines politicsnot only in government and among nationsbut also in private organizations, businesses,universities, families, language, and daily life.Various methods are used to do this, rangingfrom the interpretive and historical to thequantitative and statistical.

Political science graduates enternumerous professions: journalism, foreignservice, social services, government, law,law enforcement, teaching, civil service,business, librarianship, and research.Undergraduate majors have done all of theseand more. So have the department’sgraduate students, many of whom comefrom abroad and return to their homecountries to become leaders in their fields.The Department of Political Scienceprovides a sound undergraduate educationthat helps prepare people to think critically

specializations in alternative futures, Asianand Pacific politics, comparative politics,international relations, political behavior,political theory, and public policy.

A completed application includes astatement of purpose from the applicant,three letters of recommendation, transcripts,and scores from the GRE General Test. The Academic ProgramPopulation Studies (PPST) is an interdisci-plinary graduate certificate programwhose faculty come from University ofHawai‘i departments in the College ofSocial Sciences and the School of Public

Health, from the Program on Population,East-West Center, and from the Depart-ment of Health, State of Hawai‘i. ThePopulation Studies Program serves bothindependent graduate study and degreecandidates in other University units whowish to understand population processesand to develop special competence inapplying the concepts and tools ofdemography and of their discipline to thestudy of human populations. The programfocuses on the links between populationprocesses and their variable contexts(historical, environmental, cultural, social,economic, and political) in the contempo-rary world, especially Asia and the Pacific,as well as on the concepts and tools ofdemographic analysis.

Population Studies consists of a core ofbasic information and five themes or keyissues in population inquiry: demographicmethods, health and development,population and environment, reproduc-tion and human resources, and socialmobility and spatial dynamics. Each ofthese is conceived as an overlappingcircle to emphasize the exchange ofinformation and ideas about humanpopulations, based on courses andseminars drawn from population studiesand the social, health, and humansciences. Each of the five thematicclusters in population has a faculty leader,responsible for facilitating its intellectualintegrity and routine operation.

Certificate in Population StudiesRequirementsThe interdisciplinary graduate Certificate inPopulation Studies consists of 16 credits ofcourse work, earned with a grade of morethan B- in any course, and either a compre-hensive examination or a research paper.Specific requirements are as follows:

■ A core of four courses (10 credits),including Introduction to HumanPopulation (PPST 650), Methods ofDemographic Analysis (PPST 691),Faculty Seminar Series (PPST 649), andthe Interdisciplinary Seminar inPopulation Studies (PPST 750).

■ Two courses (6 credits), numbered600 or above, selected from any of thefive thematic clusters in population(demographic methods, health anddevelopment, population and environ-ment, reproduction and humanresources, and social mobility andspatial dynamics). On petition, theprogram director may accept 600-levelcourses or above that are not listed

within any of the five thematic clustersbut have significant populationcontent. Courses taken for credit maybe applied to both a graduate degreeand the interdisciplinary certificate.

■ Either a research paper of publishablequality on a population topic or acomprehensive examination in theinterdisciplinary study of humanpopulations. Students may choose toenroll for 3 credits of Directed Readingand Research (PPST 699) whenundertaking their research paper.

Each year, the program directorappoints a committee of three facultymembers to both administer the compre-hensive examination and assess com-pleted research papers. Four of sixquestions must be answered in thecomprehensive examination, which willbe written and followed by an oraldiscussion. It will be broad in scope andassume basic knowledge of the concepts,substance, and techniques of population.Questions will be concerned with theintegration of material, plausible argu-ment, and reflective statement. Researchpapers must be of publishable quality, anda student choosing this option will have afaculty adviser who is not a member ofthe assessment committee.

SpecializationsDemographic MethodsProvides additional training in theconcepts and techniques of demographicanalysis. Many Asia/Pacific countries donot have accurate and timely systems ofvital registration or have limited orimperfect data on population characteris-tics. Specialized training allows studentsto estimate and assess more correctlydemographic parameters using thesetypes of data. Courses cover field methodsfor collecting valid and reliable informa-tion about population, as well as survivalmodels, analysis of categorical data, andother state-of-the-art statistical techniquesfor data analysis. Students taking courseswithin this cluster should preparethemselves through broad coverage ofsocial statistics.

Health and DevelopmentExplores the physiological, cultural, andsocial impacts of international develop-ment that introduces biomedicine,impacts food producing technology, andaffects the political economy of healthand health care. Courses in this specializa-tion address physiological and socialfactors affecting health through the life

cycle; reproduction and health; culturaldiversity and health (gender, class,ethnicity; epidemiology of infectious andchronic diseases) including malaria, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease; and theeconomics of health and health care.

Population and EnvironmentConsiders the relationship of population tothe quality of the natural environment andits ability to sustain life. Major themesinclude the debate over sustainabledevelopment and the impact of populationgrowth on land and sea resources,pollution and climate, together withrelationships between population andculture, consumption and distribution ofresources, and human conflict. Specificissues include use and quality of energy,water and land, deforestation and desertifi-cation, agricultural and industrial practices,and urbanization. The cluster focuses onissues of the commons, particularlygovernance, including the role of interna-tional governmental and nongovernmentalorganizations and social movements.

Reproduction and Human ResourcesExamines the dynamics of producinghuman resources and their interactionswith economic, social, and culturalfactors. Analyses focus on both thequantity and quality of human resources,their causes and consequences. Topicareas include marriage and family, humanfertility, reproductive health, childsurvival, and the interaction of investmentin human capital with economic develop-ment. Study of the organization, imple-mentation, and evaluation of familyplanning programs also forms part of thisinterdisciplinary cluster.

Social Mobility and Spatial DynamicsFocuses attention on social mobility insociety and over space. It covers mobilityboth in situ and over space within andamong social formations. It includes suchtopics as social stratification and inequal-ity, labor markets and systems, and thespatial dynamics of migration and socialchange associated with urbanization,rural-urban relations, and regionaldevelopment. These dimensions ofpopulation can be viewed at all social andspatial scales, from household andneighborhood to the urban, regional,national, and international level. Eachtopic is intrinsically multidimensional andlends itself to interdisciplinary perspec-tives. The Academic ProgramPsychology (PSY) can be defined as thescience of mind and behavior. Somepsychology majors are preparing to entergraduate school, where they will betrained to become professional psycholo-gists. Others use psychology as a pre-professional major for other fields, such aslaw or medicine. The majority of psychol-ogy majors, however, are using psychol-ogy as a general liberal arts major.Psychology is qualified as a discipline forthis purpose. An understanding of thespectrum of psychological knowledge,methods, and concepts facilitates andenhances productivity in virtually everyarea of human endeavor. This understand-ing also promotes interpersonal skills andsensitivities, as well as critical thinkingskills. Collectively, these understandingsfoster a respect for others, which is a coreelement of the curriculum of the psychol-ogy department.

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa isfortunate in having a psychology depart-ment composed of an unusually large num-ber of internationally recognized figures inthe field. Not only do students get to learnfrom these scholars in the classroom, butmany receive direct training in cutting-edgeresearch and the application of psychologi-cal knowledge. Areas of concentrationinclude behavioral neuroscience, clinicalstudies (an APA accredited program),community and culture, developmentalpsychology, experimental psychopathol-ogy, health psychology, marine mammalbehavior and biology, marine mammalsensory systems, social-personality, andteaching, learning, and cognition.

Graduate StudyThe graduate program in psychology isdesigned to provide students with a strongbackground in theory, research methodol-ogy, and psychological issues. Currently,there are 10 concentrations in whichstudents can receive specialized training:behavioral neuroscience, clinical studies(an APA accredited Program), communityand culture, developmental psychology,experimental psychopathology, healthpsychology, marine mammal behavior andbiology, marine mammal sensory systems,social-personality, and teaching, learning,and cognition. Applications are considered only forthe fall semester. Applicants shouldpossess a bachelor’s degree, have aminimum of 24 credit hours of under-graduate work in psychology (includingcourses in basic psychology such asresearch methodology, statistics, andlearning, abnormal, social, developmental,personality, cognition, and physiologicalpsychology), a cumulative grade pointaverage of at least 3.0, strong letters ofrecommendation from professors,competitive general and psychology GREscores (past applicants admitted asgraduate students in the department tendto score at or above the 600 level on thevarious sub-domains of the GRE), andpreferably one to two years of researchexperience. Master’s DegreeThe master’s degree program includes athesis and at least 32 credit hours ofcourses specified by the department andspecific area of concentration. Detaileddescriptions of specific requirements foreach area of concentration are containedin the application brochure. The depart-ment does not offer a terminal master’sdegree program in psychology. Onlystudents interested in pursuing a PhDdegree are considered for admission.Students with a BA degree are admitted tothe master’s program and, upon success-ful completion, petition for entry into thedoctoral program. Doctoral DegreeStudents must complete their master’sdegree (from UH or another accreditedinstitution of higher learning) prior toentering the doctoral program in psychol-ogy at the University of Hawai‘i. Specificcourse work and other relevant depart-mental and concentration specific

Graduate StudyMaster’s DegreeThe master’s degree consists of a core year,an individuated concentration, a practicumexperience, and a capstone. The core yearand capstone must be taken first and last inthe program, respectively. Once theprogram begins in the fall, new admissionsare not made until the following year.

The core year consists of an integrated,collaboratively taught curriculum offered ina format that balances lecture and discus-sion sessions. The curriculum is highlyinterdisciplinary and integrates a series oftopics deemed essential to effective workin public service roles. These includecommunications, the political-economiccontext of public institutions, economicprocesses, public ethics, policy processes,administrative law, bureaucratic structureand organizational change, and the role ofpersonal and organizational culture.

The individuated concentration isintended to balance the common work ofthe core year. It allows each student todesign a program of study built around atheme of special personal and professionalinterest. The concentration is satisfied bycompletion of 9 credit hours in coursework, directed reading, or directedresearch. Themes are created by thestudent working in conjunction with afaculty adviser. Anyone electing the thesis(Plan A) option may substitute concentra-tion credits for thesis work with approvalof the faculty adviser.

The practicum is designed to placeindividuals in a setting where they maycompare organizational structure andprocesses. The length and specific natureof the practicum varies according to thestudents' experience in public organiza-tions. In some cases placement in oneorganization may be modified to becomework on a project that takes place acrossseveral organizations.

The capstone consists of a 1-creditplanning seminar during the semesterpreceding that in which graduation willoccur and the concluding 3-credit seminar

itself. The focus of the capstone is ongroup analysis of a public issue ofimportance in Hawai‘i and the Pacific.

The degree program is of interest toindividuals with some experience in publicservice institutions, such as government andnonprofit organizations, or in positions witha public service component in otherinstitutions. Spaces also are available forpeople with no experience who wish toenter public service. The program iscompatible with the schedules of peopleworking full-time and can be completed intwo to three years.

RequirementsMPA candidates must complete 14 credithours of core requirements, 9 credit hoursof individual concentration, 3 credit hoursof practicum, and 4 credit hours ofcapstone. The thesis option may beselected to replace some or all of theconcentration credits.

CertificateCertificate in Public AdministrationThe certificate is designed for people withexperience in public service work who donot wish to obtain a degree.

Those enrolled in the certificate programparticipate in the core year, at the end ofwhich they create a professional develop-ment seminar series. The seminar allows adeeper focus on issues of special interest.There is also the option of arranging a prac-ticum as an additional learning experience,something encouraged by the program.

Academic ProgramThe PhD program in second languageacquisition (SLA) is administered by theDepartment of English as a SecondLanguage. The graduate faculty of theprogram is interdisciplinary—drawn notonly from the ESL department but alsofrom faculty in the Departments ofTeaching Education and CurriculumStudies, East Asian Languages and Litera-tures, Educational Psychology, English,European Languages and Literature,Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages,Linguistics, and Psychology. The Universityalso offers an MA in ESL (see the “English asa Second Language” section within theColleges of Arts and Sciences for moreinformation).

The courses in the program areorganized into four areas of specialization:

1. Second Language Analysis—Structuralanalysis of learners’ language develop-ment; comparison of native andnonnative languages; second-languagevarieties; differences arising fromsocial and geographical contexts;phonological, grammatical, anddiscoursal properties; typologicalfactors; putative universals.

2. Second Language Learning—Studies ofthe biological, psychological, social,and cultural factors in the language-learning process; the role of universals;interlanguages; the processes ofcomprehension and production.

3. Second Language Use—Studies of thesocial functions of second and foreignlanguages; pidgins, creoles, and dialectvariation; roles of social and geographi-cal contexts; pragmatics; discourseanalysis; cross-cultural and inter-ethniccommunication; sociopolitical factors.

4. Second Language Pedagogy—Researchinto language-learner needs (includingimmigrant needs); formulation ofneeds-based curriculum objectives andsyllabi; computer-aided instruction;program administration; evaluation andlanguage assessment.

Graduate StudyDoctoral Degree

The basic requirement for admissioninto the PhD program is the completionof an MA in ESL, applied linguistics, orsecond- or foreign-language education.Applicants with graduate degrees in suchrelated disciplines as anthropology,education, English, modern languages,linguistics, and psychology are alsowelcome. In addition to the admissionrequirements of the Graduate Division,the SLA PhD program requires (a) lettersof recommendation (three of whichshould be from academic sources); (b)copies of an MA thesis, publications, orother research; (c) a statement of researchinterests; (d) a brief description ofrelevant professional experience andlanguage skills; and (e) GRE General Testscores (for both native and nonnativespeakers of English). Applicants whosenative language is not English must scoreat least 600 on the Test of English as aForeign Language (TOEFL).

Students are normally admitted for thefall semester, but spring admission ispossible in special cases. Candidates areencouraged to apply early. There arevarious sources of financial aid. Theprogram strives to provide financialsupport for the best qualified doctoralstudents throughout their course ofstudies by means of research and teachingassistantships. RequirementsStudents work closely with their advisersand doctoral committees in defining theirindividualized programs. In order toestablish a common core of expertiseamong students, specific courses aredesignated according to the backgroundof each student. The basic preparationexpected as part of their MA training is atleast one graduate-level course in each ofthe four areas of specialization compa-rable to the courses indicated as suchbelow. Beyond basic preparation, eachdoctoral student’s program must include aminimum of two graduate-level courses ineach of three of the subfields of specializa-tion and a minimum of two graduate-levelcourses in research methods. At least twocourses must be at the 700 level.

Doctoral candidates must pass acomprehensive examination before thedissertation and a final oral examinationdefending the dissertation.

Students must also demonstratecompetence in two languages other thantheir native language. The languageschosen should be relevant to theirprogram or professional plans. Thisrequirement may be satisfied by coursework or examination. Reading knowledgeis required for one language. This part ofthe requirement must be satisfied beforeadvancement to candidacy. For thesecond language, either reading compe-tence or oral proficiency will fulfill therequirement, which must be satisfiedbefore the comprehensive examination istaken. A specified level of computerliteracy may also satisfy the secondlanguage requirement. Where thedoctoral committee considers it appropri-ate for specific programs, additionallanguage requirements may be imposed.

The Academic ProgramSociology (SOC) is the study of how societyorganizes itself and how various groupsinteract with each other and the conse-quences of these processes. Sociology’ssubject matter includes marriage and familypatterns, race and ethnic relations, demogra-phy, social change, class structure, formalorganizations including bureaucracies, valuesystems, conflict, deviant behavior, and thepeople and institutions of other societies.

Sociology uses a range of researchtechniques for studying social phenomenathat can be applied to many areas, whetherone is interested in the incidence of crime,client satisfaction, policy evaluations, ordemographic trends. In addition to prepar-ing people as professional sociologists inacademic settings, sociology is an excellentbackground for careers in law, social work,public health, urban planning, publicadministration, and other fields. Thegraduate program provides students with afoundation in basic theory and methods ofresearch. In addition, faculty and advancedgraduate students are involved in severalbroad areas of sociological interest: thecomparative sociology of Asia; populationstudies; the study of crime, law, deviance,and human services in the United States;aging and medical sociology; and race andethnic relations.

Graduate StudyTwo programs of graduate study insociology are offered: a PhD program,intended to provide a professional basis forresearch and university teaching, and anMA program, designed to offer a generalsociology curriculum and specialized areasof study relevant to career lines other thanuniversity scholarship. Applicants forgraduate study in the department mustspecify which program they wish to enter.Letters of recommendation and GREGeneral Test scores are required of allapplicants; scores for the GRE subject testin sociology are not required but arerecommended. A sample of written work isalso required of applicants to the PhDprogram. An undergraduate major insociology is not required for admission, butsome sociology background is recom-mended. Makeup course work may berequired in some cases. Applications willbe accepted for either fall term or springterm admission. The application deadlinefor admission is February 1 for the fallsemester and September 1 for the springsemester. The department also provides amore detailed statement of its graduatedegree programs and procedures. Personsinterested in applying should request acopy of A Program of Graduate Study

from the department.

Master’s DegreeThe department offers the MA Plan A(thesis) and MA Plan B (non-thesis).

Plan A (Thesis) RequirementsThe general MA curriculum in sociology(Plan A) should prepare the student for

possible positions in government andprivate industry, especially in researchactivities. In addition, preparatory trainingis provided to those who aspire to adoctoral degree, but the general MAcandidate cannot assume that satisfactorycompletion of this curriculum willautomatically lead to placement in thedepartment’s PhD program.

The Plan A program aims to providethe student with a firm foundation insociological theory, methods of socialresearch (including statistics), and theapplication of theory and methods tovarious areas of study.

A minimum of 24 credit hours ofcourse work is required for this program,with an additional 6 credit hours forthesis (SOC 700). All candidates arerequired to take at least one course eachin the areas of sociological theory,research methodology, and socialstatistics. A minimum of 12 credit hoursmust be taken in a subfield that reflectsthe student’s special interests. All coursescredited toward the 30-credit hourminimum required for the MA degreemust be passed with a grade of B orbetter. At least 12 credit hours of the 30must be at the 600 level or higher(exclusive of the 6 credit hours for thesis).

The first semester’s work is planned inconsultation with the graduate chair or aninterim adviser appointed by the graduatechair. During the first semester, under theguidance of the graduate chair or theinterim adviser, the student prepares astatement outlining a study plan thatreflects his or her special interests andmeets the credit requirements of theprogram. Also, the graduate chair or theinterim adviser assists in forming thestudent’s three-member thesis committee.One member of the thesis committeemay, but need not, be from outside thedepartment. The thesis committeeapproves the thesis topic, supervisesthesis work, conducts the final oralexamination in defense of the thesis, andcertifies the completion of the thesis,after which the student is certified ashaving completed the MA degree programin sociology.

Plan B (Non-thesis) RequirementsPlan B (non-thesis) is offered only in thespecialized area of population studies.The population studies program isdesigned to provide practical training indemographic techniques and to teach thestudent facts and theories of populationstudies. Details regarding this area may beobtained from the sociology department.

Doctoral DegreeThis is an academic-oriented program. It isdesigned to provide the student with afirm foundation in sociological theory,methods, and research so the student isprepared to engage in professionalresearch and university teaching.

The course requirement for the PhDprogram is 33 credits (eleven courses),comprised of (1) five core courses intheory and methods, (2) five substantivecourses at the 600 level or above, and (3)one course of SOC 699. The student cancomplete this 33-credit requirement ineither Phase I or Phase II of the PhDprogram. All courses must be passed witha grade of B or above, and the studentmust maintain a B average (3.0 GPA) forcontinued registration.

The first phase of the PhD programprovides basic training in theory, meth-ods, and research. The requirement in thisphase is to complete the five core coursesin theory and methods, and it is recom-mended that courses at the 400 level orabove and one course of SOC 699 betaken. In addition, the student submits atutorial paper and another term paper. Atthe end of this phase of work, the studentgoes through a qualifying review. Afterpassing this qualifying review, the studentis allowed to proceed to complete thesecond phase of the PhD program.

This second phase provides advancedtraining in areas of concentration anddissertation research. The course require-ment in this phase is—if the student has notcompleted it in Phase I—to take 15 credits(five courses) of substantive courses at the600 level or above. In addition, the studentis required to write and present a researchpaper of the format and quality publishablein a professional journal, take written andoral comprehensive examinations on twoselected areas of concentration, write adissertation proposal, finish a PhD disserta-tion, and orally defend the PhD dissertation.

Requirements for Phase I30 credits of course work, including:

■ Five core courses (15 credits) in theoryand methods

■ Four other social science courses (12credits) at the 400 level or above,excluding SOC 699

■ One course of SOC 699 (3 credits)

In the second or third semester, thestudent takes a directed reading course forthe purpose of preparing a tutorial paper.

One Tutorial Paper and One TermPaper. By the beginning of the second

semester, the student should meet withthe temporary faculty advisers to plan hisor her guidance committee. The three-member guidance committee may becomprised entirely of graduate faculty inthe Department of Sociology or, ifdesired, two from inside the departmentand one from outside.

In the second or third semester, thestudent will take a directed readingcourse (SOC 699) to prepare a tutorialpaper to be submitted for qualifyingreview. The guidance committee shouldinclude the faculty member with whomthe student takes SOC 699.

In the fourth semester, the studentselects one of the best term papers he orshe has written while doing course work,makes revisions, and submits it along withthe tutorial paper he or she has preparedthrough SOC 699 to the guidancecommittee for evaluation.

The guidance committee then evaluatesthe student’s performance to determinewhether the student should be granted anMA degree. The guidance committeemakes this decision on the basis of (1)fulfillment of the 30-credit requirement,which includes 18 credits of courses at the600 level or above by the fourth semester;and (2) the quality of the two paperssubmitted. After the guidance committeemakes the decision to grant the MA degree,the student may request the graduate chairto certify completion of the MA degree enroute (Plan B). Students who already holdan MA in sociology from the University ofHawai‘i or another institution may notexercise this option.

Qualifying Review. If the studentwishes to proceed to Phase II of the PhDprogram, the student should request thechair and members of the guidancecommittee to write a letter of evaluationto the qualifying review committee nolater than the sixth week of the fourthsemester. The chair of the student’sguidance committee may submit apetition to the graduate chair for exten-sion beyond the fourth semester to takethe qualifying review.

Each semester, a department-widequalifying review committee is formed bythe sixth week of the semester. Thiscommittee evaluates students wanting tocontinue in the PhD program based onthe following information: (1) thestudent’s grades, especially from therequired core courses; (2) the two paperssubmitted by the student; and (3) lettersof evaluation from the chair and membersof the guidance committee.

The qualifying review committeemakes the following evaluation on thestudent: Honors, Pass, Fail.

When the student who receives a “Pass”or above will be allowed to proceed tofulfill the PhD requirements in Phase II.Should the student receive a “Fail,” it willbe reported to the Graduate Division.

The student who failed may request asecond qualifying review. Dismissal fromthe PhD program is final if the studentreceives a second “Fail” from the qualify-ing review committee.

The PhD Committee. After thestudent has passed the qualifying review,the graduate chair should immediatelyassist the student in selecting the chair ofhis or her PhD committee. The PhDcommittee chair will assist in forming afive-person PhD committee, including atleast one member, but no more than twomembers, from outside the department.

Requirements for Phase IIIn order to prepare the student foradvanced training in areas of concentra-tion and serious dissertation research, atotal of five substantive courses (15credits) at the 600 or 700 level (excludingSOC 699) are required for the PhDprogram. A substantive course is definedas any course not specifically classified astheory or methods. The student may havealready taken some substantive courses inPhase I. However, if the student has notfulfilled this five substantive courserequirement prior to the qualifyingreview, he or she must fulfill it beforesubmitting the dissertation proposal.

The Research Paper. The PhDcommittee will aid the student in develop-ing a research paper that meets thestandards and the format implied by theterm “publishable journal article.” Thisresearch paper can be an extension of anearlier paper used for the qualifying reviewat the end of the MA Program en route.

Upon approval of the research paper,the student must arrange for presentationof the research paper (in any publicacademic forum). The presentation givesthe student the experience of intellectualexchange in a professional setting. Publicpresentation of the research paper mustbe fulfilled before submitting the disserta-tion proposal.

Comprehensive Examination.Upon approval of the research paper, thestudent takes the comprehensive examina-tion from the PhD committee. It iscomposed of two parts: written and oral.

The written comprehensive examina-tion will cover two broadly defined

substantive areas, as determined by thestudent and the PhD committee. Thestudent develops a bibliography for eacharea, which may serve as a basis forpreparing the substantive areas.

The PhD committee makes up three tofive questions from the two selected areasof concentration. The student picks up thequestions from the graduate secretary on aMonday morning. The student must returnthe answers to the graduate secretary bythe following Monday at noon.

The PhD committee evaluates thewritten examination and then proceeds tohold a closed oral examination to deter-mine whether or not the student isprepared to undertake dissertationresearch.

On the basis of the written and oralexaminations, the PhD committee rendersa decision on the student’s overall perfor-mance on the comprehensive examination.The decision will be either “Honors,”“Pass,” “Conditional Pass,” or “Fail.”

Should the student fail the comprehen-sive examination, the failure must bereported to the Graduate Division. Thestudent may take the comprehensiveexamination a second time after consulta-tion with the graduate chair. Dismissalfrom the program is automatic if thestudent fails the retake examination.

Prospectus and Dissertation. Aftersuccessful completion of the comprehen-sive examination, the student is admittedto PhD candidacy and proceeds to thedissertation prospectus.

By now, the candidate should havedeveloped some ideas about researchinterests, data, and methods. Theprospectus is prepared with the help ofthe student’s PhD committee. Thecompleted prospectus is then evaluatedby the student’s PhD committee. Thecommittee makes the final decision onthe acceptability of the prospectus.

The dissertation itself should representan original contribution to the field ofsociology in the form of a monograph or amajor journal article.

Dissertation Defense. Examinationprocedures for the dissertation defenseare described in the Graduate Bulletin.Departmental options are as follows:

■ recommend approval as is or withminor revisions, in which case thecandidate files a copy according toGraduate Division requirements;

■ recommend major revisions or rewrit-ing, in which case a second dissertationdefense will be scheduled; or

■ recommend that the PhD not beawarded.

The original copy of the dissertationmust be submitted to the GraduateDivision. In addition, the departmentrequires a copy for its files.

The Academic ProgramThe Department of Speech (SP) has as itsprimary objectives the development ofknowledge in and instruction concerningthe process of speech communication.This involves three fundamental areas ofemphasis. The first area is human message

processing, which involves understandingthe function and structure of the variouscodes, verbal and nonverbal, used to formmessages in speech communication, aswell as examining the encoding anddecoding processes involved in speechcommunication. The second is relationalcommunication, which focuses on factorsthat influence growth, maintenance, andtermination of relationships. The third issocial influence, dealing with theprocessing of beliefs, attitudes, and/orbehavioral modification, including gainingcompliance, conflict resolution, persua-sive campaigns, and propaganda.

Speech is predominantly a discipline ofsystematic, purposeful thinking andcommunicating. Students obtain a liberaleducation of considerable breadth anddepth in regard to speech communicationtheory. Furthermore, they are affordedample opportunity to develop theircommunicative skills by applying theoryin such diverse activities as interviewing,group discussion, organizational commu-nication, intercultural communication,public speaking, interpersonal communica-tion, debate, and performance of literature.Indeed, the basic philosophy of thisdepartment—and it is stressed in everycourse and co-curricular program offered—is that there is no surer preparation forprofessional life and participation in societythan an education that enhances the abilityof the individual to maintain lifelonglearning and the skills to communicateeffectively.

Graduate StudyMaster’s DegreeThe department offers an MA focusingon interpersonal and organizationalrelations. Course work, seminars, andstudent research in the programdevelop a cross-situational understand-ing of theory and research in the threeareas central to the discipline: messageprocessing, relational communication,and social influence.

All applicants for the MA program inspeech must supplement the applicationand transcripts required by the GraduateDivision with three letters of recommen-dation (preferably from professors withwhom the applicant has worked), a one-page statement of goals, and the GREGeneral Test scores. These supplementaryitems should be sent directly to thedepartment.

Intended candidates for the MA shouldhave a strong undergraduate preparationin speech or a closely allied discipline.Students who lack this preparation mustmake up deficiencies either before orduring graduate study. In the latter case,the student will be admitted condition-ally, pending removal of the deficiencies.

The Academic ProgramThe Department of Theatre (THEA) andDance (DNCE) is comprised of twoseparate but related disciplines.

Theater includes the study of dramaticliterature and theory; acting and directing;stage, costume, and lighting design;stagecraft; playwriting; and Asian and youththeater. Imaginative and creative individualsinterested in the disciplined, practicalapplication of classroom theory are suitablecandidates as theater majors. Teaching andprofessional stage, film, and television workare typical professions of theater majors, butthe analytical and practical skills, disciplineand self-confidence, creativity, problem

solving, and ability to work toward commonproduction goals are applicable to allprofessions. The theater major will benefitfrom a comprehensive curriculum thatincludes the world’s most noted Asiantheater program and a nationally respectedyouth theater program.

Dance is the art of human motion. Itencompasses the study of human movementas it relates to the physical sciences, music,theater performance and production, history,cultural context, education, visual design,and human expression. Dance majors findcareers in the areas of performance,choreography, teaching, arts administrationand production, therapy, history andcriticism, and research. The University'sdance program offers comprehensive theorycourses and a wide variety of dance tech-niques and styles. The program is consideredunique due to its offerings in dance ethnol-ogy and Asian and Pacific dance.

AdvisingAfter being admitted as majors in thetheater program, undergraduates mustconsult each semester with the theaterundergraduate adviser. Master’s DegreesMaster’s Degrees in TheatreMaster’s degrees in theatre offered are theMA Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-thesis)and the MFA Plan B (creative/perfor-mance). For the MA Plan A, the candidatedoes research in theater history, theory,

or dramatic literature; the thesis may be inAsian, Western, or youth theater. For theMA Plan B, a generalist degree, thecandidate takes additional advancedcourse work in lieu of writing a thesis.The MFA Plan B emphasizes creative orperformance work in six concentrations:acting, directing, design, and playwriting(each of these four may include Western,Asian, and youth theater work), Asianperformance, and youth theater.

Applicants must present an adequateundergraduate background and submitthree letters of recommendation, as wellas official scores from the GRE GeneralTest. The department expects that allincoming graduate students will havetaken at least two courses in dramaticliterature and one course in each of thefollowing four areas: acting, directing,design or technical theater, and theaterhistory. If such courses have not beentaken, they will be made up as under-graduate deficiencies while in residencefor the master’s program and will notcount toward the credit accumulation forthe master’s degree. The TOEFL minimumscore for foreign students is 600. Appli-cants for the MA Plan A degree are alsoexpected to submit a major paper; thoseseeking the MFA degree should presentappropriate supplementary materialssuch as slides, photographs, video, orplay scripts.

Application deadline for the fallsemester is February 1 (January 15 forforeign applicants). Upon the successfulcompletion of 12 graduate credit hourswithin the department, the elimination ofany undergraduate deficiencies, and (forMFA students) the presentation of anacceptable qualifying creative project, thestudent may be admitted to candidacy.

Students pursuing an MA in theatredevelop, with an adviser, a programappropriate for their interests (minimumof 39 credit hours). The program mustinclude 3 credit hours in each of thefollowing areas: research methods (THEA600); Asian theater theory/history;Western theater theory/history; youththeater, creative drama, creative move-ment, or Western puppetry; Asian orWestern acting or directing; design/technical theater; and graduate theaterworkshop (THEA 690), in which studentsreceive 1 or 2 credit hours (dependingupon extent of involvement) for workingon a single Kennedy Theatre production.A minimum of 18 credit hours must be incourses numbered 600 to 798 (excluding700); a minimum of 6 credit hours must

For both MA degrees,students will take a three-hour writtencomprehensive examination followed byan oral examination. MA Plan A studentswill have an additional oral comprehen-sive on the written thesis.

MFA students in all concentrations willtake a minimum of 60 credit hourscomprised of 12 credit hours of founda-tion courses (3 credits in research and 9in history and/or theory); 39 credit hoursof concentration courses, includingenrollment in THEA 690 Graduate TheaterWorkshop, in which students receive 1 or2 credit hours (depending upon extent ofinvolvement) for working on a singleKennedy Theatre production, and aculminating project for which the studentwill enroll in 6 credit hours of THEA 695Creative Project; and 9 credit hours ofelectives. Of the total 60 credit hours, 30must be at the 600 level or above. Thereis no written comprehensive examinationfor the MFA degree. However, theculminating project will include a writtencomponent that goes beyond thedescriptive record of the project; thethesis committee, in conjunction with thecandidate, will decide the nature, extent,and scope of the written component ineach case. Additionally, each student willbe given an oral examination on theculminating project.

To receive a list of specific recom-mended courses for meeting MA and MFArequirements, contact the departmentaldirector of graduate studies. Students willselect their elective courses (MA Plan A,12 credits; MA Plan B, 18 credits; or MFAPlan B, 9 credits) in consultation with theiradvisers to reflect their special interests.Students with sufficient undergraduatepreparation may take approved relatedgraduate courses in other departments forcredit toward their degree.

Master’s Degrees in DanceThe department's graduate offering indance include the MA Plan A (twooptions), the MA Plan B (two options),and the MFA Plan A. For admission to themaster's in dance program the GRE is not

Intended dancecandidates for all degrees must present anadequate undergraduate background indance or a related field and submit threeletters of recommendation. MFA candi-dates in dance must also submit a video(VHS format) of their choreography andperformance. MA candidates must submita sample of written work, such as a majorpaper. The application deadline for the fallsemester is February 1 (January 15 forforeign applicants). Spring semesterapplication deadline is September 1(August 1 for foreign applicants). Uponthe successful completion of 12 graduatecredit hours within the department, theelimination of any undergraduatedeficiencies, and (for MFA students) thepresentation of an acceptable example ofcreative work, the student may beadmitted to candidacy.

The MA Plan A emphasizes research indance ethnology or other general areas.The MA Plan A, Option I (dance ethnol-ogy emphasis) requires a minimum of 36credit hours, including DNCE 651, 652,653, 661, 654 or 655, and 700 (6 credithours); 3 credit hours in 400-level Asianor Pacific performance courses; relatedarea electives (6 credit hours); danceelectives (3 credit hours); and generalelectives (3 credit hours). All electivesmust relate to thesis research. Candidatesmust pass a reading or speaking profi-ciency exam in a foreign languagerelevant to their area of thesis research ormust satisfactorily complete four semes-ters of a language relevant to their area ofthesis research.

MA Plan A, Option II (general) requiresa minimum of 36 credit hours, includingDNCE 651, 652, and 700 (6 credit hours);9 credit hours from DNCE 321, 331, 421or 431; 600-level dance theory electives (6credit hours); general electives (6 credithours); and 3 credit hours in two differentAsian or Pacific dance forms.

The MFA Plan A emphasizes perfor-mance and choreography. The MFA PlanA requires a minimum of 60 credit hours,including DNCE 421 or 431 (18 credithours); DNCE 651, 652, 660, 661, 671,and 672 (4 credit hours); DNCE 679 (2credit hours), 691, and 700 (6 credithours); 2 credit hours in two differentAsian or Pacific dance forms; 3 credithours in 600-level dance electives; 6credit hours in non-dance electives; and 1credit hour in a general elective. MFAcandidates must participate in two danceproductions a year.

The nature of the required performancein productions should be determined inconsultation with the student’s adviser.

MFA Plan A and MA Plan B requirewritten comprehensive examinations andan oral defense of the examination. MAPlan A and MFA Plan A require an oraldefense of the thesis.

Doctoral DegreeThe Doctor of Philosophy degree givenfor scholarship in theater history, theory,or criticism, not creative or artistic work,is offered in three areas: (a) Westerntheater, (b) Asian theater, and (c)comparative Asian-Western theater. ThePhD degree is not conferred for theacquisition of academic credits. It isgranted only to candidates who demon-strate outstanding ability to do imagina-tive research and who present the resultsin a cogent dissertation.

A candidate for the degree is requiredto successfully complete three semestersof full-time residence, required courses(detailed below), other courses as deemednecessary by the student’s doctoralcommittee, examination in the researchlanguage(s) used in the student’s disserta-tion research, a written and oral compre-hensive examination and an oral defenseof the student’s dissertation. The mini-mum residence requirement is threesemesters of full-time work or theequivalent in credits at the University. Atthe end of the second semester inresidence, the graduate faculty willprovide the candidate with an assessmentof her or his progress to date.

Required courses in the Western areaare THEA 600, plus three other 600– to700-level courses from a departmental listof approved courses; required courses inthe Asian area are THEA 464, 465, and466, as well as THEA 660 if thecandidate’s dissertation requires fieldresearch. The curriculum of the compara-tive Asian-Western theater area isdetermined by the student’s doctoralcommittee. A high level of accomplish-ment in the foreign language or languagesappropriate to the proposed area ofresearch is required and will be deter-mined by examination.

Proficiency in teaching, whetherlecturing before large classes orteaching smaller classes and leadingdiscussions, is considered part of thetraining of all PhD candidates, whoshould demonstrate this proficiency bygiving several such lectures or byserving as teaching assistants.

Written comprehensive examinationsand two hours of oral comprehensiveexaminations are required of all candi-dates before admission to candidacy.These are given after a student hascompleted the language requirement andbefore embarking on the dissertation.Written comprehensive exams shallconsist of nine questions, one or more ofwhich will specifically address thecandidate’s major area of research andone or more of which may be of a specialnature at the discretion of the candidate’scommittee. The comprehensive includesquestions on both Asian and Westerndrama and theater; further guidelines areavailable from the graduate adviser. Thequestions on the written portion areposed by the theater and dance graduatefaculty and members of the student’scommittee. The doctoral committeeconsists of at least five graduate faculty, ofwhom a majority are from the Depart-ment of Theatre and Dance and at leastone from another department.

Applicants for admission to theprogram must submit a detailed statementof the dissertation research they propose,three letters from those acquainted withtheir academic work, a sample of theirresearch (such as a seminar paper or amaster’s thesis), and official GRE GeneralTest scores. The application deadline foradmission in the fall semester is February1 (January 15 for foreign applicants).Requirements include a broad backgroundin the humanities, a master’s degree intheatre or its equivalent, and competencein dramatic production.

The Academic ProgramUrban and regional planning (PLAN) is adynamic field, that is still evolving. Itemerged out of the convergence of twoconcerns: (1) the provision of urbaninfrastructure and (2) the initiation of socialreform. While the underlying focus oncommunity well-being continues, urban andregional planning today has broadened toinclude the development, implementation,and evaluation of a wide range of policies.Specifically, urban and regional planners, inboth developing and developed countries,are concerned with the following:

1. The use of land in the city, in thesuburbs, and in rural areas, particularlywith the transition from one use toanother;

2. The adverse impacts of humanactivities on the environment and thepossible mitigation of those impacts;

3. The design of the city and the surround-ing region so as to facilitate activities inwhich people need and want to engage;

4. The organization of settlement systemsand the location of human activities inurban and regional space;

5. Identification of social needs and thedesign and provision of services andfacilities to meet those needs;

6. The distribution of resources and ofbenefits and costs among people;

7. The anticipation of change and itsimpact on how people do and can live;

8. Participation of citizens in planningprocesses that affect their future; and

9. The way that choices are made,decisions implemented, and actionsevaluated, and the means by whichthose processes can be improved inurban and regional areas.

The Department of Urban andRegional Planning takes amultidisciplinary approach to planningeducation, recognizing in particular theimportant contributions to planning thatcan be made by the social and naturalsciences and by the architectural, publichealth, social work, and civil engineeringprofessions; emphasizes extensivecommunity involvement; engages inresearch that focuses on application ofplanning methodologies and implementa-tion of planning endeavors; recognizesthe close relationship between urban andregional planning and politics; acknowl-edges the difficulty of resolving the valuedifferences that lie at the heart of mostplanning problems; and appreciates boththe importance and the elusiveness ofcritical concepts, such as “the publicinterest,” to urban and regional planning.

UH Master of Urban and RegionalPlanning (MURP) graduates, of whom thereare about 250, hold planning and relatedpositions in a variety of public agencies,academic institutions, nonprofit organiza-tions, and private firms in Hawai‘i, on thecontinental United States, and in the AsiaPacific region.

AccreditationThe department is accredited by thePlanning Accreditation Board.

Graduate StudyThe department offers a multidisciplinaryapproach to planning education. Studentsare provided with an opportunity todevelop an individualized but integratedcourse of study drawing on this depart-ment and other departments and profes-sional schools in the University. Facultyand students engage in both funded andnon-funded research and communityservice. The graduate curriculum focuseson theory, methodology, and practice inthe following areas: community planningand social policy, environmental planning,urban and regional planning in Asia and thePacific, and land use and infrastructureplanning. Planning in the developingcountries of Asia is emphasized.

Master’s DegreeStudents enter the MURP program from avariety of fields, usually the social sciences,architecture, engineering, public health,social work, and, increasingly, the naturalsciences, but also from such diverse fieldsas philosophy, human development, andhistory. Students coming into the programare required to have an adequate back-ground in descriptive and inferentialstatistics or to acquire this backgroundprior to enrollment in PLAN 601 and 605.

Native speakers of English are requiredto take the GRE General Test. Others willbe expected to have achieved adequatepreparation in English as evaluated by theTOEFL. Each applicant should provide twoletters of reference, preferably fromindividuals acquainted with the applicantacademically or professionally. In addition,applicants must complete a self-assessmentform and an express information form(available from the department). Aninterview with a member of the faculty, iffeasible, is highly recommended. Thedeadline for application for admission isFebruary 1 for the fall semester andSeptember 1 for the spring semester.

Standards for a graduate with a MURPdegree include the following:

1. Knowledge of the structure and thegrowth and transformation processes ofhuman settlements;

2. Knowledge of planning theory, history,and ethics, including an understandingof the social and political nature ofplanning;

3. Knowledge of general methods andmodels appropriate to urban andregional planning, including methodsappropriate to a chosen area ofconcentration;

4. Knowledge of planning informationsystems and computer applications inplanning;

5. Ability to structure and evaluate alterna-tive plans and strategies for resolving ormitigating planning problems;

6. Ability to communicate, especially inwritten and oral form; and

7. Ability to plan with, rather than for,clients.

MURP graduates hold a variety ofplanning and related positions in publicagencies, nonprofit organizations, and privatefirms. In Hawai‘i these include the stateDepartment of Business, Economic Develop-ment and Tourism; the Department ofHealth; the Land Use Commission; theLegislative auditor; the Department of

Hawaiian Home Lands; the House MajorityResearch Office; the Hawai‘i CommunityDevelopment Authority; the HousingFinance and Development Corporation; theDepartment of Public Safety; the Departmentof Land and Natural Resources; the U.S.Department of Housing and Urban Develop-ment; the Honolulu City and CountyDepartments of General Planning; LandUtilization, Housing and CommunityDevelopment, and Parks and Recreation; theOffice of the Managing Director; the Officeof Council Services; the Planning Depart-ments of the counties of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, andMaui; the Neighborhood Justice Center;banks and trust companies; consult-ing firms;development corporations; real estate firms;university research and exten-sion organiza-tions; and community colleges.

On the continental United States,graduates are city and county planners,program analysts in federal agencies (e.g.,Office of Coastal Resource Management andOffice of Management and Budget), andplanning consultants. Other graduatesinclude a planner for a nonprofit housingcorporation, a lawyer-planner, and a lawprofessor. Overseas positions includeplanners with regional planning, housingredevelopment and environmental agencies,the United Nations, and private developmentand consulting firms, as well as faculty inuniversity programs. Several MURP graduatesare pursuing doctoral degrees in planning,geography, political science, and economics,while others are seeking law degrees.

RequirementsThe MURP degree is a two-year profes-sional program that requires a minimumof 42 credit hours. It is designed toequip students to fill professionalplanning and policy analysis roles inpublic agencies, private firms, andcommunity groups, particularly inHawai‘i, Asia, and the Pacific Basin. Allstudents complete the core sequence(planning theory, planning methods,and models, a 6-credit-hour practicum,and three of the following courses:PLAN 610, 620, 630, and 640). Theremainder of the academic program,including a second methodology course, isindividually designed with concentrationin a specialized area of the student’s ownchoosing (with the consent of his or heradviser), provided adequate academicresources are available in the departmentand at the University. Grades of B orbetter are required in PLAN 600, 601, 602,and 605, and an average of B or bettermust be earned in all courses countedtoward the MURP degree. MURP students

receiving a grade lower than a B will beallowed one additional opportunity toachieve a B or better in each core course.

Both Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-thesis) programs are available. All studentsare required to pass a final, which includesa successful defense of the thesis on theselected area of concentration, and to meetthe program standards for graduation.

Professional Certificate in Urbanand Regional PlanningThe Professional Certificate in Urban andRegional Planning is designed for practic-ing planners eligible for graduate admissionwho are not able to attend school for thetwo years required to earn a MURP degree.

Professional certificate candidatesspecialize in one of the following fourfields: community planning and socialpolicy, environmental planning, land useand infrastructure planning, or urban andregional planning in Asia and the Pacific.

Professional certificate candidates arerequired to earn 18 credit hours includingPLAN 600; 602 or 603; and 601 or 605.Each candidate selects a field of interest inwhich he or she takes three coursesincluding PLAN 610, 620, 630, or 640. Thespecific courses are selected in consulta-tion with the candidate’s faculty adviser.

Applicants for the professional certifi-cate program should apply to the GraduateDivision as special non-degree students.Two letters of reference should be sent tothe department from people who arefamiliar with the applicant’s academic orprofessional record. Applicants must haveearned a BA, BS, or a professional degree;have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 inthe four semesters prior to admission; andhave had at least three years of professionalpractice prior to admission.

Certificate in Planning StudiesThe Certificate in Planning Studies allowsstudents pursuing a master’s or doctoraldegree in another area to becomeacquainted with planning skills andactivities. Students enrolled in graduateprograms in architecture, economics,engineering, geography, political science,public health, social work, and sociologyare among those eligible. Students areencouraged to use the certificate programto increase their competence in planningas it relates to their major area of study.

Certificate students are required totake five courses offered by the departmentand complete the requirements for amaster’s degree in their area of study. Therequired courses are PLAN 600, 601 or 605,and 751. The remaining two courses are to

The Academic ProgramWomen’s studies (WS) is an interdiscipli-nary program that examines women insociety, culture, science, and history, asindividuals and groups, with bodies andminds. With a faculty trained in a variety offields of study, the program examines therole of gender in shaping history, psychol-ogy, anthropology, sociology, politicaltheory, literature, art, drama, education,law, medicine, and biology. It offersstudents an encounter with the importantquestions feminist research raises.

In order to analyze the construction ofgender and the complexity of women’slives, the curriculum is divided into thefollowing four clusters of related courses:

1. “Words and Images” considers howwomen have been represented and howwomen have represented themselves inphilosophy, literature, art, language, etc.;

2. “Mind and Bodies” examines sex as abiological category and gender as asocial category, looking at reproduction,health, and personality, as well as rapeand violence against women;

3. “Roles and Institutions” connects theexperiences of individual women to theoperations of larger social institutions,including marriage, politics, work,education, and religion; and

4. “Gender Across Cultures” studies thesimilarities and differences amongwomen across racial, economic, ethnic,and regional lines. A cross-cultural per-spective is central to other areas as well,but it is so crucial to women’s studiesthat it requires a separate emphasis.

Women and men from all colleges at theManoa campus take women’s studiescourses because of its interdisciplinarynature and its ties to other fields of study.Five WS courses meet the General EducationCore requirements; many others are cross-listed with other departments. Women’sstudies offers a flexible major through theLiberal Studies Program, allowing students topursue either a specialized or a generalcourse of study. Women’s studies is auniquely promising avenue of self-under-standing, as well as a means of connectingresearch on women to other academicinterests. Those who understand theworkings of gender in personal lives andsocial order can better pursue a variety ofcareers. The women’s studies program at theManoa campus offers a unique opportunityto study similarities and differences—racial,economic, ethnic, and regional—amongwomen here and around the world, past,present, and future.

AdvisingStudents who are pursuing a general courseof study through the Liberal Studies Programmeet with the program director for advising.Those students who are studying specificareas of women’s studies are matched withprofessors who are experts in the students’areas of interest. The Academic ProgramThe zoology (ZOOL) department at theUniversity of Hawai‘i at Manoa offersundergraduate programs leading tobachelor of science and bachelor of artsdegrees and a zoology minor andgraduate programs that offer master ofscience and PhD degrees. Of particularnote is the department’s emphasis ontropical marine biology and evolution-ary biology. There are few places in theUnited States where these emphasescan be pursued more productively or ina more practical setting. Students canacquire a broad background for a career

in marine biology. The BS degree isparticularly suited for students prepar-ing for graduate training in zoology andrelated fields and for those seekingimmediate employment in zoology-related research and applicationmarkets. It provides the broadestscientific background at the under-graduate level. Students preparing forpre-professional programs (premedical,pre-dental, pre-physical therapy, pre-veterinary medical) should consider theBA in zoology degree. It providesgreater flexibility in pursuing the broadliberal arts education encouraged byprofessional schools. Graduate StudyThe department offers programs ofgraduate study and research leading to theMS and PhD degrees. The major strengthsof the graduate program in zoology are inthe areas of animal behavior; comparativeendocrinology and physiology; cellular,molecular, and developmental biology;and evolution and ecology. Especiallystrong programs have developed in areasthat utilize the resources of Hawai‘i’sunique island setting, including develop-mental biology, marine biology, andecology, evolution and conservationbiology. Much of the research in thedepartment emphasizes the animals ofHawai‘i: marine invertebrates, terrestrialarthropods, fishes, and birds.

Graduate students in zoology may jointhree interdisciplinary graduate specializa-tions: the Cellular, Molecular and Neuro-Sciences (CMNS) Program; the Ecology,Evolution, and Conservation Biology (EECB)Program; and the Marine Biology (MB)Program. The department also hosts theHawai‘i Cooperative Fishery Research Unitand has active affiliations with the Hawai‘iInstitute of Marine Biology, the KewaloMarine Laboratory, the Békésy Laboratory ofNeurobiology, and the Center for Conserva-tion Research and Training.

Recipients of the MS degree usuallyteach, pursue careers in research orgovernment service, or pursue furthergraduate training. Those with the PhDordinarily seek teaching positions incolleges and universities or researchcareers in university, government, orprivate laboratories.

Thefollowing sections summarize theadmissions and program requirements,but the department brochure should beconsulted for complete details.

Admissions

Students are admitted to the graduateprogram only in the fall semester; theundergraduate and graduate studies; andletters of recommendation from threepersons who can appraise the student’saptitude for graduate study. An applicantalso must be sponsored by a member ofthe graduate faculty who has indicated his

or her willingness to advise the student;the applicant should communicate withprospective faculty sponsors well inadvance of the application deadline.

Intended candidates for the MS or PhDdegrees in zoology are expected topresent a minimum of 18 credit hours ofundergraduate course work in zoologyand/or biology and to have completed atleast three semesters of chemistry(inorganic and organic), one year ofphysics, and at least one course each incalculus and botany. Deficiencies inundergraduate preparation must berectified within the first year, withoutgraduate credit. A course in biochemistryor molecular biology is required of allstudents, but it may be taken for graduatecredit.

General RequirementsTo ensure that students have broadcompetence in zoology, they must take adiagnostic examination at the start of theirfirst semester. This examination seeksevidence of competence at the level ofthe undergraduate major (for MS stu-dents) or the master’s degree (for PhDstudents) in the areas of subcellular-cellular, organismic, and supraorganismiczoology; students scoring at the 90th

percentile or higher on any of thesesections of the GRE biology test areexempted from the corresponding sectionof the diagnostic exam. Students who donot perform satisfactorily on the diagnos-tic examination will be required to takeremedial course work, which must becompleted within two years.

Master’s DegreeRequirementsThesis (Plan A) and non-thesis (Plan B)programs leading to the MS degree inzoology are available. In addition to thethesis, Plan A requires a minimum of 24credit hours of course work and 6 credithours of ZOOL 700 (thesis). The 24 credithours must include at least 12 credithours of 600- or higher-level course work,including 1 credit hour of ZOOL 691B and1 credit hour of ZOOL 691C. The 24credit hours may include up to 6 credithours from related departments and up to2 credit hours of ZOOL 699.

All graduate students are required totake at least one graduate seminar ortopics course each year.

Plan B is a non-thesis program andrequires a minimum of 30 credit hours in400- through 700-level courses. The 30credit hours must include at least 6 but

not more than 16 credit hours fromrelated departments (excluding coursescross-listed in zoology or applicable to thezoology BA degree) and at least 18 credithours of 600- or higher-level course work.The 18 credit hours of graduate coursework must include 1 credit hour of ZOOL691B, 1 credit hour of ZOOL 691C, and atleast 2 but not more than 5 credit hours ofZOOL 699. A research paper based onoriginal scientific work is required.

Doctoral DegreeApplicants to the PhD program ordinarilywill have completed the master’s degree, butexceptionally well–qualified applicantswithout the master’s degree may be admitteddirectly into the PhD program. Studentsenrolled in the master’s program also mayapply for admission into the PhD programwithout completing the master’s degree.

RequirementsAdmission to candidacy requires evidenceof reading ability in an approved foreignlanguage; this requirement may besatisfied by completion of a languagerequirement equivalent to that for thebachelor’s degree at the University ofHawaii at Manoa by appropriate certifica-tion by a UHM language department, byattaining a score of at least the 80thpercentile on the Educational TestingService foreign language exam, or bycompletion of an acceptable foreignlanguage requirement in completing agraduate degree at another accreditedinstitution. An oral comprehensiveexamination must be passed within oneyear of admission to candidacy; thisexamination will emphasize the student’sresearch area but may cover any facet ofzoology. All PhD candidates are requiredto have some teaching experience.

The research project culminating in thedissertation is the most important part ofthe PhD degree program. The dissertationis to be an original contribution based onindependent research, carried out underthe guidance of the adviser and disserta-tion committee. The completed disserta-tion is defended at a public final examina-tion, conducted by the dissertationcommittee and including a public researchseminar by the candidate.
