Comfort, care and dignity. We are a charity which provides specialist compassionate care and support to patients and their families in Barnsley who are living with a progressive, life-limiting illness.

Our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals provide care and support in every way we can and take a holistic approach to help improve quality of life.

People with progressive, life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, motor neurone disease and Parkinson’s disease can access a range of support services and treatments at the Hospice. These include day therapy, complementary therapy, carers groups, inpatient care and counselling support to help them live the best life they can.

We deliver care and support services in the safe space of the Hospice, with opportunities to meet and talk to others in similar situations.

The Hospice will be smoke-free from 1st January 2020

“I feel like I’m in a safe bubble when I’m here.”

Our care We provide short-stay, individualised holistic care for 10 inpatients, in calm and comfortable surroundings. We treat each person with dignity and respect, working around the clock to provide the best possible care. We support patients and their families with their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

How long can patients stay on IPU? The Hospice is unable to provide long-term care. We will work with you and your family or carer when planning your discharge and will

involve your GP, district nurses and any other services you may need.

The garden Our Inpatient Unit garden is a tranquil and relaxing place for patients and their families to enjoy in the warmer months.

Family visits Your family and friends can visit at any time, and there is a family room where they can stay overnight if required.

Referrals for Inpatient care Referral to the Inpatient Unit is by your GP, hospital, Macmillan nurse or district nurse.

“Coming to work at the Hospice is like coming home. It’s an absolutely fantastic place to work. We’ve got a really good team, looking after people at the most difficult time of their lives. I feel really privileged to be able to help them.”

Inpatient Unit Our highly skilled team of nurses, doctors and allied professionals on the Inpatient Unit (IPU) deliver outstanding care for people who are finding it difficult to manage their symptoms, as well as for people who are entering their last days of life.

The Day Therapy Unit offers a welcoming, relaxed and caring environment to promote a sense of wellbeing. Our private garden, which is maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers, also provides a calming outside

space to relax.

Day Therapy service The Day Therapy Unit provides compassionate expert care and support for people with progressive and life-limiting illnesses and those caring for them. Patients can be referred to our services through their GP, Macmillan nurse, community nurse/matron, social worker or other medical professional.

Examples of services and activities available include advance care planning, peer group support, access to medical and nursing support, lunch and refreshments.

Drop-In Service During our Drop-In sessions you will receive a warm welcome from our experienced staff who will identify your needs and arrange for you to access the most appropriate support and therapy services. No formal referral is required.

Medical Outpatient Clinic We run a medical outpatient clinic for patients to help manage pain and other symptoms associated with progressive, life-limiting conditions. To access this service, you will need to be referred by a health professional involved with your care.

Physiotherapy Our experienced physiotherapist provides support to patients and carers to ensure safe moving and handling, as well as rehabilitation.

The Day Therapy Unit Patients, carers and families can access a range of day services at Barnsley Hospice to help them adjust to the physical and emotional limitations of their illness.

“I think people would be surprised to know what goes on in the Day Therapy Unit. It’s a place for people to be whoever they want to be on that day. Many people think a Hospice is just a place for people to come to die, but we are so much more than that, we are about living your life as best you can.”

Our experienced complementary therapists play an important role in the care of patients and their families to offer treatments which promote relaxation, care and comfort in a safe environment.

Therapists work closely with the medical team to provide the appropriate therapy, alongside clinical treatments to help patients manage physical symptoms and cope with psychological and emotional symptoms.

The complementary therapy team provides treatments to patients and their families who are admitted to the Inpatient Unit or are attending Day Therapy and Outpatient clinics with a referral from a healthcare professional.

All patients and family attending a Day Therapy Drop-In Day session can benefit from wellbeing support without a referral.

Complementary Therapy and Wellbeing ServicesWe offer a range of therapies to patients and their families as part of our holistic approach to care.

“Wow! That was wonderful and so relaxing. I was able to forget things for a little while and just listen to the music and enjoy the massage.”

Supporting familiesWe recognise patients and their families need our support to help them achieve the best possible quality of life. Our family team provides emotional, psychological and social support to patients, families and carers during the period of illness and bereavement.

Social Care Our social worker can provide emotional and social support to patients and families, addressing any difficulties or concerns they may be experiencing. They can advise and support with future planning and decision-making including welfare benefits, wills and other personal wishes. The team will also ensure that patients have a safe and smooth discharge from the Inpatient Unit to their preferred designated place of care.

Carers Drop-In Group Led by our social worker, our carers group allows those caring for someone with a progressive life-limiting illness to meet others in a similar situation. Carers can gain knowledge and receive emotional and practical support in a safe and friendly environment.

Pre and post-bereavement support The bereavement team provide counselling and support to those experiencing difficult feelings

and emotions related to an illness or the death of someone close to them. We provide a safe and confidential space for one-to-one counselling and support for adults, children and young people.

Bereavement Drop-In group This group provides an informal setting for you to meet others in a similar situation to yourself. The group work gives you an opportunity to gain knowledge and learn about your own individual grief and to also share and gain support in a safe and friendly environment.

We offer a wide range of therapies including Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Massage, Manicure, Pedicure, Reflexology, Reiki and Relaxation sessions.

Lymphoedema Service

What is Lymphoedema? Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by damage or failure of the body’s lymphatic system, leading to swelling, skin and tissue changes.

What treatments are available? At Barnsley Hospice we have a team of specialist practitioners who are trained in Lymphoedema management to help patients manage their condition and continue to live an independent life.

Treatments may help reduce the swelling and possible discomfort of the condition. They include skin care, exercises, compression therapy and massage. All patients will be assessed individually and provided with a treatment plan based on their needs.

How you can support Barnsley Hospice We rely heavily on the generosity of individuals and businesses to help us continue our care. Each year we need to raise over £2 million to provide patient services that are free of charge.

If you would like to donate to the Hospice, or support us in any other way, please speak to a member of staff.

Compliments, comments and complaints We aim to provide first-class care across all areas of the Hospice and value your feedback to help us maintain these high standards.

If you have any comments regarding your treatment at the Hospice please discuss them with a relevant team member. If your issue cannot be resolved, please contact the Chief Executive formally in writing.

If you still feel like your issue is not being resolved, you can contact the Care Quality Commission independently at:

“0ur aim is to empower service users to self-manage their condition. People using the Lymphoedema service seem to really benefit from the many treatment options we have available.”
