“Getting God in Mind”First message in series:

I. The Power of Thinking“A man is what he thinks about all day long” (Emerson).“A man's life is what his thoughts make of it” (Marcus Aurelius).“For as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7, NKJV).

II. The Mind as the Landscape of Spiritual Life (Romans 8:6) “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”

A. The mind as “death”

B. The mind as “life and peace”

Mind is a flowing something. It oscillates. Concentration is merely thecontinuous return to the same problem from a million angles. So myproblem is this: can I bring God back in my mind-flow every few secondsso that God shall always be in my mind as an after-image, shall alwaysbe one of the elements in every concept and precept? I choose to makethe rest of my life an experiment in answering this question (FrankLaubach, , p. 7).

(2 Corinthians 10:5) “…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

III. Three Keys to Cultivating Kingdom Thoughts (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

A. Be joyful always.

B. Pray continually.

C. Give thanks in all circumstances.

WORSHIP NOTES

Participants: Karl Haffner, senior pastor, presents the first sermon in his 5-week series on“Getting God.” Today we consider how we “get God” in our minds. Dan Stevens, pastor forchildren’s ministries, hosts today’s service and tells the children’s story. Katie Woolever, ourchurch task force worker of creative ministries, presents the Prayers of the People. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist – choir director for today’s service.

As we gather for worship the Kettering Strings, under the direction of Maretta Alden, playVivaldi’s Concerto in G Major, RV 151, which is subtitled “Alla Rustica” because of its bucolicrhythms that were strongly associated with shepherds and farm life. This piece is alsounique in that there are no “soloists” which is usually the reason for a “concerto”.

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (Hymn 21) was chosen because it is one of the few hymnsthat speak of God’s wisdom. The prevailing metaphor in this hymn is “light” which in addition toillumination, refers to the attainment of knowledge or enlightenment.

My Shepherd Will Supply My Need is taken from a choral anthem by Virgil Thompson that hasbeen simplified into a hymn setting found in our Hymnal No. 104. The tune is “pentatonic” meaningit could be played on only the black keys of a piano which was very common in early Americantunes.

More About Jesus (Hymn 245) was a very popular gospel song written by Eliza Hewitt who wasa popular teacher in Philadelphia in the early part of the 20th century.

(Hymn 642) was a favorite hymn of Winton Beaven who wasone of the pioneers of the Kettering Church and Kettering College of Medical Arts. The hymn waswritten in 1962 and set to an Irish tune,

is based upon Johan Cruger’s great hymn of thanks, .J.S. Bach composed this piece including Crueger’s hymn, with trumpets playing the accompanimentand the choir singing the chorale. The great American organist, Virgil Fox, rearranged it for organso that the organ’s solo trumpets play the hymn that is accompanied by the full organ.
