Donald Huff, newly appointed banddirector for Spring Valley Academy, directs the Praise Orchestra. Jerry Taylor is our minister of worship andmusic and the organist for today’s service.

About the Music: As we gather for worship, the Praise Orchestra playsThis reverent medley presents the hymns of the major branches of the United States Armed Forces and includes(in order of appearance) " " (Navy/Coast Guard)," " (Air Force), " (Marines), and "

(Army). The title of the work takes a phrase from Thomas Paine's tract, “ (No.4), written September 12, 1777, the day after the bloodiest conflict of the Revolutionary War on the Battlefieldat Brandywine.

was composed by John Philip Sousa specifically to be played during theband’s “Sunday” performances, which were financially critical for the band’s survival. Given the possibility ofcriticism by members of the clergy about the band playing on a “church day,” it is not surprising that for thesecond half of his band's first season, John Philip Sousa prepared a special arrangement of well-known hymnsto be used at these Sunday performances. Sousa chose a poetic title, . Utilizingthe opening phrases of Verdi's "Requiem" as an introduction, Sousa then presents the famous 18th-centuryhymn, , composed by Thomas Hastings. Long ranked as one of the most popular hymns everwritten, the strains are soon transformed into the African-American spiritual, , made famous in the1870's by the Fisk University Jubilee Singers. is regarded as one of the most popular of the spirituals.Sousa adds to his "grand melange" a setting of , also of American spiritual origin. Then a soloeuphonium, played today by Matthew Webster, peals forth the Holy Week anthem, , by Jean-Baptiste Faure. As a grand climax, Sousa employed a stirring version of the English hymn,

, which earlier, while still conductor of the Marine Band, he had scored for the occasion of PresidentGarfield's funeral. For a final coda, he brings his magnificent work to a close with a quiet and almost distantscoring of Steiner's from his oratorio, "The Crucifixion."

was written in 1893 by teacher Katherine Bates, after a trip to 14,000-foot-high PikesPeak. More than 60 different musical settings have been written for Bates’ words, but this one, by SamuelAugustus Ward, is the most popular. This arrangement by Carmen Dragon for concert band will feature vocalsby Greta Shull and Josh Wheeker. Also of note, the particular sheet music being used by the Praise Orchestratoday is from the Don Bassett Music Library at Spring Valley Academy.

is a traditional gospel song that has been arranged by many artists. Performedas either an instrumental or vocal piece, is perhaps the most frequently playednumber in the hymn and dirge section of a traditional New Orleans jazz funeral. “Living Rich vs. Dying Rich”First message in series:

I. Crazy Lives

A. Too much

B. Too loud

C. Too fast

II. Barren Lives

III. An Empty Life Full of Stuff (Luke 12:13-21)

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritancewith me.”

Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then hesaid to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life doesnot consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plentyof good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not richtoward God.”

IV. Three Mistakes of the Rich Fool
