WORSHIP NOTES:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, continues our current sermon series, “Grace Beyond Measure,”talking about guilt, grace and growth. Brendon Prutzman, our pastor for youth, hosts today’s worship. VictorBrown, dean for enrollment management at Kettering College of Medical Arts, tells the children’s story. FrankPerez, CEO of Kettering Health Network, presents the Prayers of the People. Kirk Chung and his wife, ShellyPerez Chung, both local physicians, read the scripture. Jerry Taylor, minister of worship and music, is theorganist for today’s service.

The vocalists for today’s service are: Madelyn Callender is one of our elders, a member of our choir and theDayton Bach Society, and has sung professionally. Josh Wheeker, tenor, is a graduate of Spring Valley Academyand is currently a third-year voice major at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.

As we gather for worship, we hear transcriptions for organ of two orchestral works that were chosen to set thestage for today’s worship service on “grace.” is an ancient German poem about seeking the Holy Grail (thecup from Christ’s last supper). As “Parsival” encountered wrongs on his journey, he sets them right. “Jupiter” is oneof the earliest discovered planets and in ancient Greece was considered the “greatest” of the “gods” who promotedfairness and right.

(Hymn 567) was chosen to be the opening hymn for today’s service for severalreasons. Normally we would have chosen a hymn like “God of Grace and God of Glory,” a hymn about God’sguidance, but this hymn is more about our willingness to pattern our lives after Christ. Another reason this hymnwas chosen is because it was one of Al Brendel’s favorite hymns. Al Brendel’s Memorial Service will be today at 4p.m.

is a masterpiece by the Baroque Era composer, Pachelbel. Many music students have heard the story ofthe famous J.S. Bach losing his eyesight by copying Pachelbel’s music by moonlight. Bach was copying it becausethe music of Pachelbel was considered the finest music being composed, and therefore highly valued and not sharedby musicians fortunate enough to get one of Pachelbel’s scores. In this composition, each violin plays exactly thesame notes spaced two measures apart. The violins are accompanied by the harpsichord and portative organplaying the same eight chords over and over.

is one of the special Psalms of David. The psalm is an acrostic poem, the verses of which begin withthe successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. It was also found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. This psalm was meant tobe sung (or read) in dialogue, with each participant describing in couplets the greatness and fairness and grace ofour God.

is one of the great Charles Wesley hymns and was one that Al Brendel loved to play onthe piano. It was chosen to prepare us for today’s sermon, particularly the words of stanza 4. It can be found inour Hymnal No. 489.

was written in 1770 by William Cowper. Today we will sing it as it was originally intended,by both soloists and as a group. The hymn is accompanied by guitar, played by Pastor Elliot Smith, andharmonium (pump organ).

is a liturgical term (like Doxology or Introit or Benediction) which means a “final sung prayer.” It is sungby the worshipping body to each other following the Benediction (prayer to send the congregation out to minister).

is a paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 13:11 written in 1880 by Jeremiah Rankin and set to music bythe great English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams.

by David Hegarty is played in honor of Al Brendel. Hegarty was the first full-time Minister of Music forour church, and he was greatly loved and appreciated by Al.

(Romans 3:21-26, NIV) But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known,to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christto all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justifiedfreely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice ofatonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance hehad left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time,so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

(Colossians 2:13-15, NIV) When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinfulnature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with itsregulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. Andhaving disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them bythe cross.

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your oldself with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of itsCreator….

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you mayhave against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which bindsthem all together in perfect unity.
