Missouri Compromise

Warmup:

In 1819, how many free and slave state were there?

(hint: territories are not states)

- In 1820, the Missouri Territory wanted to become

a slave state

- In 1819, the number of free and slave states

in the United States was equal

-This way, both sides had equal

representation in the Senate

How was the problem resolved?

- All states SOUTH of the Missouri border

were open to slavery. Those NORTH of the border cannot

have slaves

Results

The south was angry because slavery was limited in the

west.

The Compromise of 1850

Problem: California wanted to become a state. The

balance would again be off in the Senate

1.) Fugitive Slave Law forces northerners

to return runaway slaves

2.) UT and NM territories given “popular

sovereignty” over slavery 2. Slave trade ended in

Washington D.C.

Results

• Northerners did not want to return runaway slaves.

• Southerners did not like that there were more free

states than slave states.

• Both sides were angry about the compromise. It

begins to divide them even more.
