On behalf of the organizing committee, I

welcome you all, participants and visitors

alike, to the 42nd Ellerslie Intermarque Concours

d’Élégance and NZ Classic Car Weekend.

As you will see from the map in this

programme, large parts of the grounds here at

Ellerslie are no longer available to us. This has

resulted in a new club-position layout. I hope

you will be comfortable with these arrangements.

Ellerslie is still the best venue in New Zealand for

our event.

The introduction of a judged intermarque

Survivors Class last year produced some very

interesting and outstanding cars, and again it will

be intriguing to see how this competition unfolds.

The time, work and dedication put into the

preparation of the cars presented for the Masters

Class and the Club Competition are just amazing.

Please get involved in this part of our fantastic

classic-car hobby.

The introduction this year of the classic-car

paddock park will give a place to leave their car

for those attending who are not part of a club

display, but who choose to drive to the event in

their classic. We expect to see some interesting

cars.

Welcome to the 42nd Ellerslie Intermarque

Concours d’Élégance. Parkside Media and

New Zealand Classic Car magazine are once

again proud to be the major sponsor of this

event, which is undoubtedly the largest and most

prestigious classic car show in the country.

This year the organizing committee have

confirmed that almost 80 classic car clubs will

be attending as well as a comprehensive display

of commercial exhibitors including many new

prestigious marques.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘The Big

Screen’ featuring cars as stars in movies and

television shows. Many clubs will be competing for

the Best Club Display Award, keen to show off their

interpretation of the theme. Keep an eye out and

see if you can match the cars with the movies.

As you move across to the Winners Circle, the

Masters Class and Team Event cars will be on

display offering ample opportunity to see some

world class restorations, and also get a bird’s eye

view of the judges at work. Due to the popularity

and success last year of the new Survivor

Class you will also see a line up of some of the

country’s best ‘unrestored’ original classics vying

for this prestigious award.

New Zealand Classic Car magazine will once again host a special display of classic vehicles

in the Newmarket Room along with special offers on subscriptions, apparel, books, and a few

freebies. There’s also a few surprises in store, so we look forward to seeing you there.

Classic Cover Insurance has been working

hard to bring some exciting new benefits to

its range of insurance products, and is proud to

announce a few new and exciting initiatives in its

policy wording that will further enhance offers to

specialist, classic car and hot-rod owners.

The first and most important issue is what

constitutes ‘agreed value’ in a classic car policy

(i.e. vehicles 25 years and older).

Classic Cover’s new policy wording reads,

“Agreed value means agreed value. This means

that if you have insured your vehicle for an agreed

value as shown on the schedule, the maximum

amount paid out will be the agreed value.” No fish

hooks!

The second benefit is that Classic Cover can

now offer unlimited mileage, with the removal of

the 5000-kilometre-per-year limit. This means

you are now covered whatever the distance you

travel in your vehicle per year, you can even drive

your classic car every day if you want. Classic

Cover will still need to know approximately how

many kilometres you think you will complete

each year — just so it can make sure you are only

being charged for the distance you cover.

Thirdly, Classic Cover can now cover your

vehicle for business use. This means you can drive

your classic or hot rod to work each day, provided

it is not being used as a goods service, taxi or

courier vehicle or similar. Note, Classic Cover

does not cover commercially-operated vehicles.

Once again the Auckland Mustang Owners’

Club (AMOC) is pleased to mark the passing

of 50 glorious years of Mustang, and proud to be

host club associated with this, the 42nd year of

what is now the Ellerslie Intermarque Concours

and NZ Classic Car Show — well done concours

team, a truly mammoth effort, and a wonderful

spectacle indeed.

The past year has been a landmark one for

AMOC, with Mustangs winning first and third place

in the Teams Events, second place in the Masters

Class event, second place in the new Survivors

Class, along with winning the People’s Choice at

the 2014 Intermarque Concours. Some of those

same cars also won many other awards at various

Mustang car shows, as well as at the Mustang

National Convention. Coupled with this, club

members travelled to the US for the launch of the

all-new 2015 Mustang — hopefully, examples of

this new model will feature in car shows at Ellerslie

in a few years!

This year, the Auckland Mustang Owners’ Club

is once again displaying cars in the Masters’ Class,

Teams Event and RadioLIVE’s Survivors‘ Class, and

has an impressive display of cars in support of the

show’s The Big Screen theme, in front of Ellerslie’s

main grandstand. Be sure to go and have a look at

the cars that have arguably had the most exposure

on the big screen over the last 40-plus years. Indeed,

while the Ford Model T of Laurel and Hardy may well

be have started the ‘car character’ phenomenon,

from the ’60s to the present day the Mustang has

appeared in such classics of the silver screen as

Bullitt and both versions of Gone in Sixty Seconds.

For the most part, many of us are ‘living the

dream’ of the day we saw those wonderful

Mustangs on the roads here, or on the screen

taking on lead roles in both film and TV series,

and lusting after the certain sound of a V8 being

let loose on some crowded street in Los Angeles

or New York, or belting down a US freeway with

the roof down.

Here in the land of the long white cloud, we

can still enjoy that experience — and the confines

of speed limits can never take away the pure joy

of getting to that limit quickly, or the sound of

the V8 laying its ears back, tyres just complaining

a wee bit with lack of bite, not to mention the

envious looks from those who wish they too had

a ‘real car!’

So, young or a bit more mature (Mustang

owners don’t get old), if you don’t own a Mustang

but are thinking about acquiring one of these

iconic pony cars, come along to the Mustang

arena out front, and someone from the club will

gladly tell you all about the joys and pleasure

of being an Auckland Mustang Owners Club

Associate member. As well, the club can offer all

the help and assistance you’ll need in finding your

particular style of steed, whether you buy here or

want to import one from the US. Or maybe you

want some advice on building a unique resto-

mod Mustang, or just want to talk about the car

you’re already part-way through rebuilding. Drop

by, we’re always ready to talk Mustang!

Here’s one interesting statistic — we have had a

large number of younger members join this year

who in fact are younger than their cars, including

one new member who is significantly less than

20. His resto-mod-built early classic Mustang

actually won People’s Choice, along with another

award, at the AMOC car show in late September!

Who would have thought that a small

competition between a cluster of car clubs

42 years ago would one day become the largest

classic and new-car event in the country?

In 2015 this show features around 800 cars

from clubs and leading new-vehicle dealerships,

as well as an even stronger presence from those

industries that support our motoring passions.

This year’s theme for the Classic Cover

Insurance Best Club display Award is The Big

Screen — featuring cars as stars in films and TV

shows. And you’ll see some of the country’s finest

unrestored classics in RadioLIVE’s Survivor Class.

The show host this year is last year’s Team

Event winner — the Auckland Mustang Owners

Club — and you can expect to see a spectacular

line-up of these iconic pony cars.

But it won’t be just classics that will captivate

the best of the best

you. It’s hard to resist the temptations of new cars

too — and this year Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin,

Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jaguar,

Jeep, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lotus, Maserati,

Mini, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Volkswagen and Volvo

all display a mouth-watering selection of models.

There’s also Maserati’s new hospitality area,

in which you can decide what you’re going

to buy with next week’s Lotto winnings. One

option (apart from a few cars) could be a new

motorhome and, for the first time, RV Super

Centre has a presence, exhibiting six futuristic

recreational vehicles at the show.

This year, background music — appropriate

for a classic scene — is provided by The Sound

93.8FM, with a broadcasting team on-site.

You can also acquire books and motor-sport

accessories, and check out wheel refurbishing,

rally tours, tracking and recovery technology,

dashboard cameras, clothing, car bumpers,

garage/showroom flooring and paint-protection

technology, insurance cover and many others —

and, of course, Meguiar’s car-care products.

We also hope you’ll support the Variety Bash

vehicles that raise funds for Variety — The

Children’s Charity, look out for their special

display.

The Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d’Élégance

not only provides the opportunity for over 80

classic car clubs to show their best classics to the

public, but also awards excellence in the highly

coveted Masters’ Class and Team Event along

with Survivors’ Class — display that will surely

captivate everyone.

The Masters Class vehicles comprise individual

entries limited to six cars only and open to all car

club members. These cars are amongst the finest

restorations you will find, and last year a stunning

1958 Porsche 356 Speedster — owned by Ivan

Fuller — achieved the highest ever score for an

individual car with 567 points out of a possible

590 points, a record previously held by Garry

Boyce’s 1957 Mercedes 300SL which achieved

565 points. Will this record be beaten in 2015?

The hotly-contested Team Event competition

(generally limited to eight teams) will also be

judged alongside the Masters’ Class cars. Each

the aWards 2015club entry consists of two cars (clubs can enter

more than one team), and the winning team earns

the right to host the following year’s event. This

year the Auckland Mustang Owners’ Club act as

the host club for the event.

Last year the winning 1962 Holden EJ

belonging to Brenda Hartnell, proved that

unrestored, well prepared, and original 50-year-

old cars have a place in the event thanks to the

introduction of the Survivors’ Class competition.

Gary McCrystal was a well respected long-time classic

car enthusiast and member of the Auckland Mustang

Owners’ Club, Cobra Club, and Auckland Corvette

Club, and owned several of these fine vehicles. He

was a member and Chairman of the Ellerslie Concours

Organizing Committee for three years — making an

outstanding contribution to the running and future of this

great event during that time.

Last year saw the introduction of the Survivors’

Class competition as part of the main judging

event alongside the Masters’ Class and Team

Event categories.

Due to the overwhelming response from the

many cars clubs wanting to enter cars in this

special event, the organizing committee have

decided to make the Survivors’ Class a permanent

category within the main competition this year.

The criteria for this competition is quite

simple — eligible vehicles being those that are

predominantly original, unrestored and not

modified in any way, in other words ‘survivors’.

Naturally, you will notice that such cars will be

wearing their original, factory-applied paint, some

will be incredibly well preserved, whilst others

may show varying degrees of visible patina, or

even the odd small dent serving as reminders of

miles covered and memories made.

Judges will also be poring over these

wonderful time capsules in search of interiors that

have been well cared for with a distinctive ‘lived

in’ appearance perhaps complete with threadbare

carpets — not to mention properly preserved

engine bays complete with original motors as well

as all related drive-train components.
