fighting the good fightAs Fathers Day approaches, I reflect back on my

own father, who was so strong so many years ago. At39 years of age with three boys of my own, I wouldlike to thank my Dad for never giving up

on the good fight. My Dad fought hardfor custody of his three children back inthe early 80s when it was unheard of fora dad to be single parent with custodialcustody of their children. My dadfought the hard fight. He sacrificedfinances, emotions and pride to fight forthe right to raise his children.

I recall walking up the court stairswith my dad that chilly fall day. Iremember him looking at us and saying, I love youall. I remember him telling us no matter whathappened he was there and would always be there forus. I remember the judge peering across his desk atme and asking Who do you want to livewith? (What a terrible position to be in as a youngteenager.) I knew in my heart, my Dad would love

me unconditionally and encourage me to love mymother.

Reflecting back, I am so proud of the man thathe was then. He encouraged us to have

loving relationships with our mother, henever spoke negative about her, and hesacrificed and gave up so much just to be aDad. He gave us unconditional love. Hetaught us through his actions that love is justthat-love.

This Fathers Day, I wont have my dad withme, but I would like to tell him thank you forfighting for me. My life would not be what itis today, if I had to have wondered if you

loved me. To all the Dads who see their children not

as much as you want to; dont give up, dont give in,and fight for your right to see and love your child. Afathers love can never be replaced and once gone cannever be forgotten.

If you would like to share your fight, please sendit to [email protected].
