Health and Well Being at ASFGASFG strives to ensure that our entire community enjoys good health and a sense of well being. As the 21st century

unfolds, it seems for many of us more and more difficult to maintain a healthy balance between work, family, spiritual, and

leisure activities. According to the KnowledgeWorks Foundation out of Palo Alto, California, one of the emerging trends for

this century will be increasing signs of health distress. It will be harder to be healthy. With the new horizons of a global

world, our challenge will be to maintain our health and well being in order to be creative and productive in a world that is

evermore connected and constantly changing. Our joy for living as well as our satisfaction with daily life is maintained and

nurtured by a sound mind and body.

New knowledge and information on how to best maintain our health and well being is available from a wide variety of

sources. We learn to make healthy choices from our family, from what we learn, and from what we experience in the

community. Unfortunately, many of the life styles that society deems acceptable do not foster health or well being. We are

well aware of the difficult and often disastrous results that can occur when we do not take care of ourselves as we should,

either physically, socially, or emotionally. Our goal as a learning community is to share with our students and families the

knowledge which can motivate us to make healthier choices for ourselves. Even the smallest change can have a huge

impact in our health and overall well being. The ASFG human development program (which includes addiction prevention,

body image, and emotional intelligence strands), the co-curricular after school sports and activity program, the ASFG

academic curriculum, and our service learning program all assist students in maintaining a happy, healthy, and productive

life. Our parent conferences and workshops also provide our families with important tools for maintaining healthy personal

and family relationships.

In this issue of Connexion magazine, the articles are focused on how ASFG fosters healthy living and well being in our

academic and co-curricular programs, in our work with parents through Parents School, and our work in the community.

A special thanks to all of the contributors. May 2010 bring us even more knowledge, and most importantly, the strength

and motivation to make healthier choices for ourselves and our families. Please enjoy this special issue of Connexion.

I wish you all a healthy and productive year!

Sincerely, Ms. Janet Heinze Director General

heir look is awed when they see the body torso. Their

imagination flies all over the body and their inquisitive mind

leads them to pull the organs apart and they want to know

what each organ is for and how it works in the body.

We take it one at a time. An organ which these students can actually

hear beating is the heart. So we begin speaking about how this

muscle pumps oxygen, a gas

we get from the air, up to the

head and down to our toes

continuously through blood.

They manipulate a

heart-shaped sponge soaked

in red water (make-believe

blood), squeeze it slowly on

and off, and watch how blood

gets pumped. After this, we

speak of healthy food

choices. Then they listen to

the story of a boy who started

to get a pain in his heart.

Mom gets terribly worried and takes little

Juanito to the doctor. At this point, Mr. Nacho

becomes the doctor who is using a stethoscope

in his ears and is holding the heart model in his

left hand. He begins asking Juanito if he likes to

eat ice cream every day? how about chocolate

chip cookies?, candy? pizza? huevos rancheros

for breakfast? a hot dog for lunch?... And on

weekends, do you eat a hamburger with fries, a

regular coke, and a piece of cheese cake for

dessert? The answer to all of the questions is

yes. So Mr. Nacho, the doctor, suggests eating fruits and vegetables

instead and maybe a hamburger once every two weeks. The heart will

be pain free and Juanito will feel healthy. However, there is always

a student who will raise the question: What if Juanito doesn’t like

to eat fruits and vegetables? Well then, if he doesn’t watch what

he eats, his heart will eventually be in pain again, and this time

they may have to operate on

his heart and clean out all the

fat that is making Juanito’s

heart ache. (At this point they

see the model of the heart

open). Most of the children

yell in excitement.

Now is the time when the

students learn how to use the

stethoscope. They listen to

each other’s heart while

sitting down, standing up,

and after doing ten jumping

jacks. In their science journal,

they write the number of beats they heard

during one minute for each of the positions. Ah

yes, it’s also intriguing to hear from the

children the stories about their grandpa,

father, or uncle who is having trouble with his

heart. This is one of the labs pre-first students

do in relation to health. Our next labs deal with

the lungs, then the stomach, then the brain,

the ears, and so on.

Early Childhood Early Childhood

Young children are discovering the world and are curious about everything that is around

them. Part of this discovery is getting to know their body.

This year I have been learning how to take advantage of the young child’s interest in

his/her body, to teach the students I work with, about yoga. Last year, I graduated with a

degree in Early Childhood education. I also have a personal yoga practice. My goal is to

use my knowledge of yoga to help children become more aware of their bodies, begin to

take more responsibility for their health and well being, and to care for the world around

them.

Yoga combines movement, breathing, and thinking. This gives the child the opportunity to

play with balance, laterality, and to connect hemispheres in the child’s developing brain.

Conscious breathing can help to combat stress.

In each yoga posture I teach, the child

gets to imitate an animal

or plant. This helps

the child develop empathy

for living things. When the child takes

on the tree posture, he or she is asked to

imagine what it would feel like to be

a tree, what the tree represents in other

creatures’ lives, and what it could feel like

for a tree to be cut down. Our health is

tied to our environment and so helping children

understand from an early age the importance

of caring for everything that is around us

is a way to help protect this generation’s

health and our world.

Yoga can help you know yourself

better and develop a positive attitude

for your own well being as well as

others. As an educator, I think it is

important to transmit this empathy and

responsibility to children. Procuring a

healthy future is our responsibility and

teachers shouldn’t take for granted

that children know how to do this.

Promoting a healthy diet, exercise, and

respect for others and ourselves

should always be in our plans.

INSPIRING GREATNESSone child at a time

Teachers are empowering students by discussing their individual growth on evaluations such as the MAP and ENLACE and then providing them with strategies to help them improve.

Students often work in pairs or small groups in the classrooms where they teach each other.

Students, in most classrooms, are given specific jobs, i.e. line leaders, keeping track of point systems, passing out papers and materials, acting as classroom greeters, supervising the cleanliness of their classrooms, etc.

Students speak clearly and confidently in front of small and large audiences, in their classrooms and at Flag Assemblies i.e. fourth graders wrote and gave beautiful speeches of gratitude to our support staff at the Cheer Box presentation in December.

Older children are great role models as Reading Buddies to children in grade levels below them i.e. first graders with pre-first students; fourth grade students with first grade children.

Students are able to identify problems and provide solutions i.e. when a group of third graders realized that the Lost and Found items were overflowing in the office, they volunteered to sort and return all labeled items to their rightful owners; when a quick and accurate attendance count was needed during the flu season, fourth graders were very responsible about reporting to the office and then quickly and efficiently visiting classrooms to collect and report on the information that was needed. Third and fourth grade students were trained to run the Your Turn, My Turn organized games store. They now open and close the store, record students’ names, and make sure that games and equipment are returned at the end of each recess. They have proven to be very

capable and efficient in running their store.

Service Learning Projects provide our students with many invaluable opportunities to become community contributors and leaders.• Fourth graders create a variety of Christmas crafts and sell them at their annual Bazaar. This past year they raised over $21,000 pesos to support children of prisoners• Third grade students work, with great enthusiasm, at different game booths during various events throughout the school year to raise money to help 89 boys at a home. This year’s money was destined to provide food, a kitchen appliance, and 237 pairs of socks. All third graders have a chance to visit the boys, share lunches with them, and spend time playing with them. • Second grade students are usually very involved with the recycling of newspapers at ASFG. This year, one of our second grade groups, initiated a very special service learning project called Pesos for Peace. The second graders bravely gave their persuasive speeches at elementary and middle school Flag Assemblies as well as in high school classrooms. Through their campaign, they convinced a great many people to donate pesos to their cause and they raised over $12,000 pesos to provide a better education to children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.• First graders, like all elementary students, participate in the many service learning projects at ASFG but one that they are especially dedicated to is our annual Book-A-Thon. The children bring in hundreds of books that are destined to create libraries in schools around Guadalajara. They help to bring the joy of reading to schools that do not have the luxury of a library or books.• Pre-first students showed their love and support to the children in Haiti by making a bunch of cute little handmade stuffed Teddy Bears. They hope to brighten someone’s day with this labor of love.• Pre-first students work hard tending to their gardens to keep the school looking pretty.

Howreassuringto know that our childrenare thefuture leaders of our world.

Inspired by Stephen R. Covey’s book (The Leader in Me) the elementary staff is learning how to apply Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to their own lives so that they will be better able to teach the habits to the elementary students. The habits are extremely useful in developing leadership skills in all students.

Teachers, throughout elementary, are all looking to identify their students’ strengths and talents so as to be able to help each child develop his/her potential as a leader. The following are just a few of the ways that teachers are developing leaders in the elementary section:

Creativity, a very important leadership quality, is reinforced by teachers in both the English and Spanish programs. Our children’s creativity emerges in the poems, stories, and songs that they write, in the PowerPoint presentations that they put together, and in the posters and artwork that they design.

The Buddy System, implemented to help new students make a smooth transition to ASFG, helps our children to become more responsible as leaders in the school. The Color Guard members model responsibility, dedication, and self-discipline at every Monday morning Flag Assembly.

Imagine you were in a cold mountain village in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Imagine trying to write

with a stick in the dirt without the comfort of a school building. Imagine not having enough

education to make your life easier. Now open your eyes. This is how it all started.

We read a book called “Three Cups of Tea” and it inspired us to help these two

countries. The main character and author of the book is Greg Mortenson who went

to climb K-2 the second highest mountain in the world. He got lost and found a town called

Korphe where the people cared for him. Then he noticed that the children did not have a

chance to go to good schools. So he began a program called Central Asia Institute. At the end

of the book Greg’s daughter talks about a program called Pennies For Peace.

This gave us an idea to start our own program which we named Pesos For Peace.

Our classmates in room 2-20 agreed and supported us in this project. We are now raising

money to help community-based education in remote mountain regions. Your pesos will be

used to buy materials and to give the children an opportunity to learn and experience what the

world is about. Your donation will help give the children a chance to break the cycle of poverty,

terrorism, and war. Together we can build a bridge to a peaceful world where people live in

harmony. We appreciate your support.

P-E-A-C-EWritten by Carlie McGrath and Zoe Belland, room 2-20

Hello! Merry Christmas to One and All,

I hope that this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the Christmas season. I’m ready for my trip home to Saskatoon and 98 Columbia Drive. Seuss has a point, I think. Where do I find Christmas?Christmas will be found in decorating the tree under the supervision of my mom. I will do my best and then the tinsel will come out. I will ask if we can go without tinsel this year and mom will say no. She will laugh and then she will finish it off! It will be found along the South Saskatchewan River, as we trudge from the new bridge north. I will be reminded of other Christmas walks. I will ask dad about the geese that remain in the small patches of open-river. Why do they stay? Are they crazy? Why don’t they go south? And dad will respond “They have already come south, this is as far as they go.” We will both think how it is that I go much fur ther south to avoid this frozen river. And we will continue our walk.Xmas will be found over coffee chats, phone calls, and get-togethers with pals. It will be found around a table with great food, snow outside, and conversation spinning from the topic of the food to the government to a new book to what we think about this or think about that. Dad will ask who wants coffee or tea. Both mom and I will say no to coffee and then five minutes later we will say yes. The next morning we will both agree that we shouldn’t have had coffee. This is where Christmas is.Christmas will surely be found under the tree where gifts have been lovingly placed but my Christmas has to be found within me and my memories and my attitude. The spirit of the year has to be found within all of us. This is my chance. This is our chance to build bridges from one faith to the other, one church to the next, and one neighbor to the next. Christmas is really the chance we have to find some peace and some love where we didn’t think there was any! The idea of Christmas can’t be bought and packaged up. That is what we have going for us. You are all where Christmas is found for me… in the love that stretches from north to south, from east to west to all over the place. I hope you find your own Christmas this year to be a “little bit more”. Love, k

Hace

The other day I was stopped at a traffic light at a busy intersection. As I waited for the green light, I observed two women standing at the bus stop. I sat in my air conditioned car, stressed and hurried. They stood in the blazing afternoon sun, but looked relaxed and at ease. Sure, they looked tired, but they looked rested; they were resting there in the midday sun. Could it be possible that they were more at ease than I was? Had I overestimated the value of a car? Was I imagining it or were they breathing more deeply than I?Years ago, I came to Guadalajara without a car. My first rides on the bus were extremely stressful. For two years, I rode the bus. I figured out the routes, asked questions, and squeezed and squirmed my way through the sardine-like buses toward the back door exit. I used to joke that getting onto and off of a crowded bus in Mexico was like getting a massage - practically every part of your body had been touched by the time you made it

to your stop. And I never did get the hang of standing. They say sailors have “sea legs” allowing them amazing stability while at sea. Many bus riders have “bus legs” or an uncanny ability to stand in a moving vehicle as it jerks forward and backward, left and right. Needless to say, I got good at saying “perdón” as my bag, arm, leg or whole body flew into another poor human. I tried to be cool about it, hanging on with one hand like the locals, but there was nothing cool about me standing on a bus. Trust me, it was embarrassing.I do remember moments of relaxation on the bus, when I finally settled into my seat and I knew where my stops were. I am not so sure I remember a feeling of peace, the kind that I witnessed in those two women recently. Yet, I am certain those moments existed. The beauty of bus riding is that even if you are late, you cannot make the bus get there any sooner; it’s going to arrive when it arrives, so you can just settle in and wait. Let’s be clear, there is no rushing

when it comes to city bus travel. You have to leave your house early, wait for the bus, take a ride and then walk to your destination. It requires us to travel less, due to the time involved in each movement across the city. When I finally got a car, I was relieved, excited, and liberated. I could truly go wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted. No waiting, no planning, just spontaneous travel around the city at my leisure. Why then did driving a car become stressful? Perhaps the responsibility of a car is what makes it so tiresome. Not only the responsibility to pay for it, maintain it, park it, and clean it, but the never-ending responsibility of driving it! Conceivably that is the burden I sensed when stopped at that traffic light the other day. What if waiting at the bus stop were a gift? What if we who have traded in our bus tickets for cars, our landlines for cell phones, our laptops for Blackberries have also traded in a sense of patience, rest, or peace? Sometimes I feel so righteous in my world of things; I admit, sometimes I feel better than others because of the things I have, pure material items. I think I may have overlooked the simplicity of life before technology and I am quite certain that I am not alone. What if those folks without cars, without cell phones (is there anyone left?), without high-speed internet in their home or hand… What if they were the ones enjoying what it seems all humans want? Happiness, inner peace. Certainly, those two women at the bus stop may or may not have been as relaxed and serene as I perceived, but they certainly emanated a simplicity and patience that I lacked in that moment.Upon reflection I realized it’s not the car or the cell phone that is eating away at my inner peace, and honestly, riding the bus isn’t the key to happiness either. Our happiness and inner peace exist -- bus or car, cell phone or landline, Xbox 360 or Monopoly; it is up to each of us to find it, sustain it, and live it. So, sitting in my car at a red light was as much a gift to me as waiting for the bus appeared to be for those two women. The only difference is I couldn’t see it... What are the gifts you are neglecting to see?

What if

The High School Student Council, Model United Nations, and the ASFG Green Committee organized a school-wide campaign focused around the number 350. This is the parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide our atmosphere should have to remain healthy; it is the level of carbon scientists report as a safe limit. Our current atmosphere is at 390ppm!

The purpose of spreading awareness of 350 is to show people that we need to care about the policies and procedures our world follows regarding the consumption of fossil fuels. In December, the world’s leaders will meet at the United Nations International Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to discuss the global crisis. We need to show these leaders that constituents understand the problem and expect them to approve policies that will effectively address this issue. The ASFG High School joined thousands of other organizations around the world and submitted photographic evidence to the United Nations that ASFG is aware of this issue and we care.

Our school should be proud of having a voice, but our message must go beyond those pictures. The pictures and spreading awareness are only the first step. We need to change our minds and encourage others to do so. There are no excuses, only initiatives.

You must adopt new habits. You must produce less trash, use less paper, improve (not degrade) your environment, recycle, change the amount and type of carbon emissions you are responsible for, buy locally, and be sustainable in your habits. Incorporate the information on garbage separation the school provides into your home life, as well as teach others. Rethink the products you buy. We have only taken the first steps, though with everyone’s help we will be able to move faster. Remember Pachamama as a healthy home for humans does not have time. If Pachamama gave us our resources, we need to give back. We owe it to her and to the next generation. Success is connected to action, and action is the initiative we need.

Let s spreadawareness ofLet s show people that we care about the policies and procedures our world follows regarding the consumption of fossil fuels.

Healthy Earth

ur personal health in the future is directly related to a sustainable,

green, and healthy Earth. High school students focused on this concept this year during their Climate Action Days. Their goal was to spread awareness of the necessity to address climate change NOW, TODAY. Pachamama, a word used by the indigenous peoples of the Andes referring to Mother Earth, our home, provides us with the resources to survive. However our current

consumption rate results in scarce resources since consumption exceeds the resources our Earth can produce. In simple terms, we must consume less. Peak oil production, over-consumption, production of goods, and transportation of goods are directly related to the global climate changing faster than our current systems can support. Humans are responsible for the problem, and the current and future generations will need to find the solution.

Last October my dad raced in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

An Ironman is a triathlon where athletes swim 3.8 km, bike 180 km, and run 42 km in less than 17 hours. To compete in this championship, first of all you either qualify or get lucky like my dad, who won one of the 50 lottery slots (available for Ironman athletes). For my dad, it was like a dream come true because all the best triathletes in the world compete in Kona, and it is one of the most difficult Ironmans in the world, too. He trained for this race more than a year, four hours daily plus 10 hours during the weekends. And he had to work and be my dad, that by the way, he is an extra fantastic dad. To train like this he had to follow a very special and strict diet. He ate a lot of times a day, a lot of fish, fruit, and vitamin shakes, and he was still always hungry because he burned a lot of calories. He lost almost 10 kilos during this training, although since he began doing Ironmans he has lost almost 25 kilos! Even if he was tired he woke up every morning to train, sometimes very early in the morning. It took a lot of discipline to do this.

My dad always accomplishes his goals. He does what he proposes to do. My mom says she remembers five years ago when my dad, who was fat and not very healthy and didn t do any exercise at all (except for golf, but that doesn t count), one morning woke up and said he was going out to jog two blocks, and when he came

back all sweaty and out of breath, he said “Tomorrow I ll run three blocks”…and that s how he started. Then one day he ran a 10 k that left him out of breath, but he finished. Then he said he wanted to run a half marathon, and he did. And then a full marathon, and he did that, too. After a couple of marathons he said he wanted to do and finish an Ironman. Wow! My mom said he was totally crazy. Then after he had finished his first Ironman he said he wanted to go to the World Championship in Kona someday, and this October, he did! Now he has done 5 Ironman competitions but Kona was by far the hardest one. One day I would like to do an Ironman like my dad but the only problem is that I don t like swimming. I know it is very hard, and sometimes there is a lot of pain, but when we were in Kona, I met Rudy Garcia Tolson and David Bailey, both are challenged athletes. Rudy doesn t have both legs since he was 5 years old, and David can t move his legs, he is in a wheelchair. Both did the World Championship, both qualified for this Ironman. Wow! They gave me some really incredible advice: “the real disability is having a negative attitude, it s all in the mind”, “anything is possible, don t stop, keep going” and “always believe”. Rudy couldn’t finish the bike part, but David won second place in his category! I know Rudy will try again some other year, he won t give up, I m sure. When I do an Ironman I will remember their advice and I am sure I will finish.

Ironman in KonaBy Ana Paula Ibarra Caballero 3-23

You are an Ironman!” ya había cruzado la meta.”

hijos. Sabemos cuán difícil puede llegar a

ser este tema para muchos padres de

familia, llegando incluso a generar

Life for me right now is very hardBut I complain no more.

Chorus:

Will people need meWill I still be me,When I´m sixty-four?

I don´t hate my school.I like to learn a lot.But sports sure are cool.

I´m very peaceful,I´m pretty calmed,But I do get stressedWhen things aren´t going as they could and should be,Yeah, whatever, this is just me.

I have very good grades, and I help a lot,Who could ask for more?

Chorus:Will people need meWill I still be me,When I´m sixty-four?

When it comes to classes I´m a saint but then I lose my mind, and the fun begins. Then go back to work, responsible I am, surely not a dork.

When I´m aloneDon´t know what to do,Play some basketball. Then go to the library to find a book,Write a song that a long time it took.

I may be crazy and a bit lazy,Lay down on the floor.

Chorus:Will people need meWill I still be me,When I´m sixty-four?

Monteverde, Mazamitla is a place by the mountains with fresh air and muddy ground, beautiful views and tall trees and, of course, even though this does not make it less beautiful, it is rainy and cold. That´s where we went for our fourth grade study trip, which is where this campfire happened. It had been a long tiring day. At that time we were all sleepy and exhausted, not to mention cold. Once the fire began to dance and wave, tilting to it´s sides and throwing little sparks, we began to sing. First we sang basic -Mary-had-a-little-lamb kind of songs. That´s when the s´mores came in. They were small pieces of melting brown chocolate on top of marshmallows stuffed with crunchy yellow crackers. I say the sugar lit us up because we sang and sang until we came to songs like “Bamba” and “Cielito lindo”. So after singing some student-led funny songs we sang the “Circles round it never ends...” song as the final touch. I had such a wonderful experience that I won´t forget this campfire... ever.

Do you want to know how was my fun, relaxing, peaceful, exciting, and adventurous trip to Mazamitla? I´m pretty sure you want to. I´ll tell you about all the adventures and memorable moments I had... When I arrived to Mazamitla, I was so exited I was ready to explode. I felt the cold wind in my face and I saw the beautiful sight of the glorious mountains. The cabins, well, in my opinion were perfect: cozy rooms, fireplace, two levels, and a poker table. I think at this point you´re on my side. The food in the cafeteria was finger-licking good. The only thing I did not like was the type of fruit. My favorite thing of cabin time was playing poker. With all that shouting and candies that animated my emotion, I was delighted. My favorite game was Predator-Prey. In this game you had to run from your enemies and at the same time find food and shelter. When I was at the fire I ate s´mores. The s´mores are super good treats formed by chocolate, marshmallow, and cookies. Well, I think I´ve told you enough. Ok, see ya!
