But when ye come and all the flowers are dyingIf I am dead, as dead I well may be,

Ye’ll go and find the place where I am lyingAnd kneel and say a prayer there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above meAnd all my grave will warmer sweeter be:

For you will bend and tell me that you love meAnd I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

message fromchef de mission

I congratulate each member of the team on their selection. This is the largest team to represent Northern Ireland at a Commonwealth Games. I am honoured to be appointed as Chef de Mission Northern Ireland team at the 20th Com-monwealth Games in Glasgow.

It is exciting for us to participate in a Home Games. I congratulate Scotland and Glasgow for their vision to bid for, and since being awarded the Games, their preparation as hosts. We share so much in common with Glasgow, for exam-ple, culture, industrial past and even weather conditions. Every part of Northern Ireland is nearer Glasgow than every part of Scotland!

I count myself particularly fortunate to have Terry Crothers, Alison Moffitt and Stewart Tosh appointed as Team Managers. These three are vastly experi-enced people in Commonwealth Games management so that we four together with several other very experienced team members provide a nucleus to which those new to the unique multi-discipline environment can look for guidance.

We look forward to seeing many old friends and making new friends, amongst representatives of some one third of the World’s population in the Common-wealth and to enjoy the camaraderie which sport naturally engenders.

I am honoured to offer my support to you who have so excelled in your chosen sports you'll now be seeing your names in lights at the 20th Commonwealth games. I only wish I could be there in Glasgow to cheer you on. I do already know, however, the main person to compete with any artist or athlete is him or herself. You're the ones who've most challenged yourselves. Now it's all wee buns to you whether you're hitting a shuttlecock or giving another boxer a knock, whether you're getting on your bike or telling a black belt to take a hike. I know you're biased only when it comes to lawn bowls and you're for the high jump only when your souls leap and soar like net balls into a net or, better yet, skeets when you're shooting skeet. I already know no one will truly be able to beat you in squash or swimming or table tennis since you've won even before you've gone under the gun. The tape you breast as a sprinter is one you've already breasted summer and winter as you've trained. You've won simply for having been in for the long run.

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) spent four wonderful days travelling throughout North-ern Ireland. Themed around People, Places and Performance, the trip certainly whetted the appetite for the Commonwealth Games two months prior to the Opening Ceremony. Having already been to 66 countries on its 180,000km journey, the Baton was hosted by the NICGC and broadcast to a worldwide audience as it visited some of our most iconic tourist attractions including Parliament Buildings, the Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-rede, Devenish Island and the Fermanagh Lakes, Titanic Belfast and the Nomadic. It also had the pleasure of rowing up the Foyle and experiencing the hospitality at the G8 venue of the Lough Erne Resort. A visit to Rathlin Island proved a particular highlight of the trip.

The QBR acts as a call to competition for the athletes of the Commonwealth. But it also provided a great opportunity to showcase all that is positive about Northern Ireland.

Under the ‘Support a 2nd Team’ initiative, run by sportscotland, every Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) was linked with one of the 32 regions in Scotland. Team Northern Ireland is pleased to be linked with the Dumfries & Galloway region. The part-nerships with CGAs are developed so that they feel welcome and at home when compet-ing and to involve all parts of Scotland with the Games.

Last Autumn, 25 young leaders were chosen from the Craigavon Area Learning Com-munity. The leaders were monumental in the delivery of the sporting event that brought together 510 children, in 16 teams representing countries competing in the Common-wealth Games, who competed in 8 sports across three venues.

team brand

The tradition, culture and history of the team is very rich and full of great achievements. Many have walked before us, both Barry McGuigan and Mary Peters included, showcasing their prowess and putting Northern Ireland on the map. If one wins, everyone in Northern Ireland wins.

Follow our #TeamNIInFocusvideo series, highlighting the work and achievements of athletes.

Centred around the athletes, the team brand was given very careful consid-eration before being introduced into the public domain and across our mar-keting material. It was quite important during the brand design process to identify key elements that represent-ed athletes and Northern Ireland on a local and international stage.

The Commonwealth Games provide the only opportunity for athletes to compete in an international multi-sport event representing Northern Ireland.

1aquatics

These are the athletes who look more at home in water than on land. Whether it’s swimmers powering through the pool and breaking records in the process or divers defying gravity, aquatics is liquid gold.

Aquatics is a core sport of the Commonwealth Games and two disciplines will feature on the Glasgow 2014 sports programme – Swimming and Diving.

Swimming is an extremely demanding sport to compete in and intensely exciting to watch. A fraction of a second or one fierce exhalation can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Swimming has featured in every Commonwealth Games programme since it began in 1930, with both male and female athletes competing. The Swimming competition will take place at the Tollcross Aquatic Centre’s 50-metre pool over six days of the Games. There will also be integrated medal events for Para-Sport athletes.

2athletics

Athletics is amongst the most ancient of human contests. The world-class athletes in this competition are determined to run faster, jump higher and throw further than anyone else.

At Glasgow 2014, the Athletics disciplines of Track, Field and Marathon will feature across seven days of competition. World and Olympic champions will be among those competing across sprints, middle-distance, long-distance and field events, including events for Para-Sport athletes.

Hampden Park will be transformed from football stadium to international-standard Track and Field facility, where all eyes will focus on the athletes’ blistering pace, agility and strength. The 100 Metre finals will have some of the fastest men and women on the planet racing for Gold.

Endurance will be tested in the Marathon, which will take in the sights of Glasgow as part of a 42.195km city course.

Anything can happen at the Athletics – underdogs and champions line up side-by-side, each determined to win. A fraction of a second or a fraction of a centimetre can turn an unknown athlete into a star.

Venues: Hampden Park Stadium (Track & Field), Glasgow City Marathon Course (Marathon) [City wide]

Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. That’s what the boxers will have to do to win Gold at Glasgow 2014.

Inside the ring the boxers need strength, skill and speed to outwit their opponent and you can bet the crowd will be roaring themselves hoarse, urging their favourite to land the knockout punch.

Glasgow 2014 is the first time that women’s Boxing will be included on the sport programme at a Commonwealth Games. Female athletes will compete in the Flyweight, Lightweight and Middleweight categories. Medals will be fought for over four rounds of two minutes.

Male athletes in ten weight categories will fight for a medal over three rounds in a “knockout” bout format, across eight days of fierce competition.

7judo

Judo, a relatively modern martial art, has grown in popularity throughout the Commonwealth. It is a highly physical sport with a strong ethical code and guiding philosophy.

In a display of physical strength and tactical positioning, the sport pits two athletes against each other in a contest to control and dictate the movements of the opponent. The aim is to score points by throwing them to the ground or immobilising them with armlocks, holds or strangles.

Both male and female athletes – dressed in the traditional white and blue Judogi (uniforms) – will compete in 14 defined weight categories in Glasgow, vying for the 14 Gold medals on offer.

8lawn bowls

The setting may be tranquil, but don’t be fooled – this is Lawn Bowls and the stakes are high.

Bowlers mix precision with boldness and they play with a focus that soon rubs off on the spectators.

Lawn Bowls is strongly represented throughout the Commonwealth, and Glasgow 2014 will feature a number of current World Champions. This sport also offers the most diverse group of competing athletes, from all age groups and backgrounds.

Athletes will compete for eight Gold medals across the men’s and women’s singles, pairs, triples and fours, beginning with a round robin format before knockout finals determine the medal winners.

Integrated into the lawn bowls programme will be two Para-Sport events for bowlers who are visually impaired or have a physical disability.

Set in one of Glasgow’s most famous parks, the Lawn Bowls competition will take place at the picturesque Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre, adjacent to the renowned Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

10shooting

Shooting combines intense concentration, skill and nerve, and its four disciplines each have their own appeal and challenge.

Clay Target athletes fire at moving targets flying in different directions. A puff of dust or powder from the clay signifies a direct hit and confirms an athlete’s score in each round.

A test of patience and skill, Full Bore Shooting requires athletes to fire at targets across a range of distances in an event only contested in the Commonwealth Games and a select number of other competitions.

Pistol and Small Bore Rifle Shooting involves athletes firing at stationary targets across distances ranging from 10 to 50 metres. Both require patience, concentration and control to ensure a high scoring hit is achieved on target.

13triathlon

1,500M SWIM, 40KM CYCLE, 10KM RUN

Combining three unique and challenging disciplines – swimming, cycling and running – Triathlon demonstrates the overall fitness, skill and endurance of some of the world’s most talented athletes.

Athletes start with a 1,500-metre open-water swim before switching to a 40-kilometre road cycle, finishing with a challenging 10-kilometre run. Depending on an athlete’s individual strength, strategy plays a major role in trying to stay ahead of the pack.

Glasgow 2014 sees the inclusion of a Mixed Relay event for the very first time at the Commonwealth Games. This innovative format consists of two men and two women. Each athlete completes a ‘super-sprint’ triathlon of swimming, biking and running, before tagging off to their next team mate.

Triathlon action will take place in and around the Strathclyde Country Park on the outskirts of Glasgow. It is expected that this energetic and exciting sport will attract large audiences to support the male and female athletes as they strive for Gold medal success.
