Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers faced tough opposition in their first Southern Junior League Final, which was held in a charged atmosphere at Luton Sports Village. The final pitched the winning teams of all the southern junior swim leagues, with the top four going through to the national final. That meant we faced some of the very best clubs in the country.

With fighting performances from everyone in the team, some in their first ever junior league event, our Camden juniors finished just outside the top four in fifth with 140 points.

Stand out maximum point winners for us on the day were JAGS swimmers Ella McEver (10) in the 50m breaststroke in 42.38, Brandon Biss (10) in the 50m freestyle in 33.39 and Alexis Lambropoulos (11) in the 50m freestyle in 30.52. Brandon also took a further four points with a third place finish in the 50m backstroke.

Adding 5 points to the Camden total by coming second was Poppy Peters (9) in the 25m butterfly and further strong third place swims came from Nick Finch (9), Nikita Markov (9), Leo He (10), Gabriele Giovannoni (11) and Yann Divet (12).

Relays added vital points to the team total with second place finishes from three teams comprising Haziq Kyril (9), Nikita Markov (9), Nick Finch (9), Josua Mara (9), Antoine Divet (10), Oliver Wright (10), Leo He (10) and Brandon Biss (10).

Says Coach Michelle McCarthy: “It was a frantic day with

everyone super-excited that we had made the final! Camden Swiss Cottage led the way on team support with great effort from parents, swimmers and coaches which included flags, face paint and banger sticks. We definitely had the noisiest supporters, which fueled the atmosphere at the final.

There were some fantastic swims, including the first places from Ella, Brandon and Alexis, but everyone contributed to the overall result and swam their very best. I was really impressed with the swimmersʼ positive attitude and team spirit. The whole team did Camden Swiss Cottage proud.

I would personally like to say A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated, not only in the final, but in all the previous three rounds (especially those who couldnʼt swim in the final because of a change in the rules on age). Without them we wouldnʼt have made the Southern final.”

The winners on the day were an impressive City of Guildford (260), with Northampton (176) second and Plymouth Leander (161) third.

Following a great open water season this summer the Masters are looking toward some big events this autumn. The first, and possibly the most challenging, is the ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships at Ponds Forge Pools, Sheffield, 23-25 October. This event pits the Masters against the best in all of Great Britain. Lets hope for some medals again this year! The other well attended event is the Barnet 1500 held at Barnet Copthall Pool on 21-22 November. This is a great local event that attracts swimmers from all of the rival local clubs. This is an invitation to all Masters who love distance swimming and those of you who want to try another discipline, come and sign up! Look out for the T30 again in January as well. We will try to accommodate as many people who want to participate as possible. More news on this later! Training update: any Masters who have not yet tried the Saturday early morning session at Kentish Town Leisure Centre, please come along! We are in the Willes Pool every Saturday from 8:15-9:15am.

The club's belated Summer Party was held on a warm early September day at the Meadow behind the Mallinson Pool. Very kindly organised by Indrani Mukherjee, mother of Shan and Nirav, the event was a huge success, complete with non-stop ball games and delicious home-made cakes. It was good to see swimmers from across the club, from the youngest Development Squad members to some of our elite Top Squad competitors enjoying themselves together, alongside coaches Matt, Gerry and Michelle. Thanks again to Indrani for her wonderful organisation and for enabling the club to start building a much stronger team bond.

CSCSC PICNIC 2015

We're off to a great start, but more volunteers needed now!

We are delighted to report that 8 Camden Swiss Cottage parents attended the first of the 3 classroom sessions required to become a J1 judge (the first level ASA judging qualification). A further 3 parents attended a parallel session held in Pimlico. This is a huge improvement on our number of volunteer parents and is a great reflection on the positive changes we are all experiencing. However for a club our size we really do need more of you to step forward and get involved. It is ultimately your children and their team-mates who will suffer if you don't - the club will continue to be rejected from meets if we can't supply the required number of qualified judges. Nor will we ever be able to stage our own club championships. Being a J1 judge gives you the best seat in the house - without having to pay for it, queue or fight for your place poolside. It also gives you the chance to meet parents and swimmers from other clubs, a free lunch and even a regular supply of boiled sweets! Please contact Tom to put your name forward now. We urgently need your help.

LAUREN- Do you enjoy being a coach? GERRY- I love being a coach. LAUREN - What are your favourite strokes and events? GERRY - Short events. 50’s, 100’s they were my favourite when I was swimming. Coaching, I like all events. My favourite strokes are freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke. LAUREN - You don’t like breaststroke? GERRY - Breaststroke was never my stroke but the others I was pretty good on. LAUREN - Do you specialise in coaching certain types of swimmers? GERRY - So far no. I’ve generally covered the medley in terms of coaching so swimmers improve on all strokes and in all areas because if you improve in one stroke, it will benefit another one just by developing the muscles and the feel for the water. You’ll then be able to apply that to other strokes as well. LAUREN - How long are you planning on staying at Camden Swiss Cottage? GERRY - As long as you guys will have me. LAUREN - Are you glad you moved to Camden Swiss Cottage? GERRY - Before I started I was very nervous. I had been with Brent for 5 years. It’s been my baby for 5 years but since moving and meeting you guys and everyone behind the scenes as well, you’ve all made me feel so welcome it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made. LAUREN - So what motivated the move to Camden Swiss Cottage? GERRY - The opportunity to grow as a coach, to learn from Matt and the other coaches on poolside, to work with a bigger group of swimmers with the potential to go to nationals and beyond. At my old club I always had a very small group, which I managed to take almost to the point of breaking on the scene. But with restrictions of a smaller club it took a lot longer to get them there. Whereas here I believe we can really achieve success rapidly. LAUREN - Where do you see the swimmers that you’re coaching now getting in the next year? GERRY - My personal aim is that everybody in my group should be getting a regional time. I would like to be able to send a relay team to nationals and have a proper team qualify for nationals. LAUREN - Where do you see the club going in the next 5 years? GERRY - With the drive that Matt has and coupled with the drive that I have and the wanting success so badly … the sky’s the limit. We can go all the way to the top and that’s where I intend. I want to have an Olympic swimmer one day so I want to be able to push my swimmers toward that point.

THANK YOU!

Many thanks to the following who helped out at the Middlesex Winter Development meet last weekend:

Susan Sellar Indrani Mukherjee Serjan Marjanovic Patrick Crannell

Plus a thank you to our swimmers that acted as runners as there were so few volunteers.
