By and large, the majority of people living on this planet simply love fruit, and when it comes to people who choose to lead a fruit-based lifestyle, you can be sure that it will be at the top of their shopping list. Fruit lovers really enjoy talking about fruit. We remember how we visited a raw food gathering and spent well over 1 hour

talking about bananas alone! We were talking about different types of bananas, where and how they are grown, what dishes you can make out of them – we kept on and on. It is natural for those who appreciate fruit to have a

desire to travel in search of the best quality and diversity of fruit. We are no exception either! When we switched to a fruit-based raw vegan diet back in mid-2009, we understood that we wanted to explore the world in search of fruit-abundant destinations. By nature, human beings are frugivores and our natural “sweet tooth” is proof of this. Man belongs to a group of animals called the great apes and another important factor we share in common with all of them is that we too are plant eaters.

As human beings, we have a natural symbiotic relationship with fruit. Flowers, for example, secrete nectar to attract bees and encourage pollination so as to spread their seed. And in a similar way, when we consume fruit, we help facilitate the incidental distribution of its seeds so that the plant can continue to thrive and reproduce.

Fruits comes in a pre-digested form when they are ripe. Their unique colours and aromas make them irresistibly attractive to our natural senses. Ripe bananas, oranges, persimmons, peaches – just the thought of eating such wondrous natural delights will make most people salivate.

Fruit supplies us with an abundance of nutrients. Raw fruits collect the energy of the sun and gain sustenance from the soil and in turn convert it into valuable, life-supporting nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fiber.

The diversity of colours that are to be found in raw fruits are derived from substances known as antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your living cells from many diseases, including cancer. Vitamins help ensure proper functioning of your hormonal system, whilst minerals maintain the alkalinity of the blood, keeping you growing, regenerating and healing.

Enzymes build your cells and your tissues. Fiber, which can be found in abundance in raw plants, aids in weight loss, helps to maintain a healthy digestive system, as well as healthy levels of cholesterol and blood sugar. Phytonutrients found in plants work to protect your body from diseases, injuries, ultraviolet rays, and pollutants in the air, water and soil.

Fruits cans supply all of the essential amino acids in the proportions that humans require and in the best form available. They are a source of dietary fiber, which helps to keep the body’s cholesterol levels in check and to maintain a healthy digestive system.

As well as endless nutritional benefits, fruit also has a mystical connection. The term “paradise” translates from the Persian language of Avestan as meaning “garden full of fruit trees”. In ancient China, fruit was meant to grant eternal life and entry to the “other world”. The Aztecs believed the upper world was a

blossoming fruit orchid. The Egyptian mystical land, known as Yaa, was believed to be full of fruits, including figs and grapes.

Fruits are meant to be delicious, nutritious and are our true companion in health and well-being. Are your ready to go on a fruit-filled adventure? Let’s go!

When people hear the term “fruit-based raw vegan diet”, they tend to assume that all you ever eat on this diet is fruit. However, this is incorrect. As well as including an abundance of fruit, this diet also includes leafy greens and other vegetables, as well as modest amounts of nuts and seeds.

The majority of nutrients that your body needs for its 'fuel' come from carbohydrates. Fruits contain simple carbohydrates, which are very easy for your body to digest and assimilate. So, at least 80% of your daily calories consumed should come from fruit, such as bananas, dates, melons, persimmons, grapes and peaches, for example.

10% (maximum) of your total daily calories consumed should come from fat, which is in all plant foods to some extent, but found in larger amounts in avocados, nuts, seeds, olives and coconut flesh.

10% (maximum) should come from protein, which can be found in all plant foods, both fruits and vegetables, but especially in soft leafy green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, kale, nuts and seeds etc.

So, basically, on a high-fruit, low-fat raw vegan diet the bulk of your food will be fruits, which will be supplemented by an

9

abundance of soft green leafy vegetables and some modest amounts of fatty foods, such as nuts, seeds, nut/seed butters, avocados or olives.

So, your typical fruit-based day will look like this:

Breakfast: fruit only or fruit and greens.

Lunch: fruit only or fruit and greens.

Dinner: fruit (wait for 30 minutes), then a large salad with just 1 chosen type of fatty food (you do not have to eat fats every single day).

Located in Asia, Thailand is known as the “land of smiles” and it attracts millions of tourists every year. The country has a tropical climate with year-round warmth, abundance of fruit, stunning beaches, waterfalls, mountains, unique architecture, and friendliness from the Thai people – there is a lot to be said about Thailand.

As well as attracting general tourists, Thailand also attracts a lot of raw foodists, with places like Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Chanthabury (during May/June) being especially popular. Other popular destinations amongst raw foodists/fruit lovers include Phuket, Koh Lanta, Krabi and Trang.

Chanthabury is known for its durian festival that takes place yearly between May and June and attracts hundreds of people. We highly recommend paying a visit to Chanthabury from approximately mid-May onwards to taste the abundant and delicious local fruit.

Climate The climate in Thailand is hot and humid across most of the country and throughout most of the year. The seasons are generally divided into the hot season, cool season, and rainy season.

The dry weather is between November and May, and June to October/November is dominated by monsoons – with most of Thailand experiencing heavy rainfall. November to February is considered to be the cool season, however, it is still warm and pleasant by most people’s standards, although it certainly does get cooler in the north if compared to the south of the country. March to May is generally hot and humid.

The southern coastal region of Thailand has slightly different rainy seasons. The islands of Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi experience heavy storms from April to October. The east coast of Thailand, which includes the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, experience rainfall between September and December.

Visa information

Most foreign tourists enter Thailand on either a free 30-day visa if they arrive by air, or 15 day visa if they arrive by land. If you are intending to stay in Thailand for any length of time, we recommend you getting a double or triple entry visa through a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country.

Chiang Mai

Located 700 km (435 miles) north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is the second largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom and translates as “new city”. It is popular amongst tourists and attracts some 5 million visitors a year. TripAdvisor, a popular travel website, included Chiang Mai in their 2012 list of “25 Best Destinations in the World” and it stands in 24th place. We would definitely vote Chiang Mai as the top destination in Thailand for fruit.

13

The weather in Chiang Mai can get hot during the warm season, and quite cool in December and January during early morning and late evening with the days still very warm.

From approximately February to April each year, the city suffers from bad air pollution, with some years being better or worse than others. The cause is officially put down to forest fires, yet a solution remains to be found. So, if you do want to visit Chiang Mai, we would strongly recommend that you stay away during this time of year until the rain season begins because the pollution levels can rise to extreme levels, posing health risks.

Organic and non-organic markets

Markets in Chiang Mai can be found at several locations around the city, with Muang Mai market being the biggest and best place to head to. Imagine going to a fruit market at 2am and seeing it packed with people! Well, that’s Muang Mai market, which is open 24/7.

Here, you can get everything from bananas and coconuts through to durian (when in season), jackfruit and mangos (there are no certified organic sellers at the market). It is always best to

Page 14: Copyright © 2013 by Rawsomehealthy · of their healthful raw food diet and healthful lifestyle! They have travelled around the world, ... Flowers, for example, secrete nectar to

14

barter with the seller, as it is expected in Thailand, and you can get yourself a good deal, especially if you buy in bulk.

Every Wednesday and Saturday from the hours of 7am – 11am, an organic/pesticide-free market is held at the Chiang Mai University gardens just off Nimanhemin road. We used to love visiting this market for its organically grown papayas and bananas. It is a great place to get your organic greens and other vegetables at a great price. If you get to the market just before 8:30am, you may be able to buy freshly harvested vegetables that get brought for sale straight from the university gardens.

Organic produce stores in Chiang Mai

Royal Project Shop Suthep Road, Chiang Mai

There are two Royal Project shops in Chiang Mai, with the biggest situated on Suthep Road, near the main traffic junction. They offer a good range of both certified organic and “safe” vegetables, which means that some chemicals were used on them, but within the accepted range (of what is acceptable in Thailand). We would still recommend you investing in organic produce, whenever you can.

Chiang Mai University Fresh Produce Shop The shop is next to the Farmer’s Market, off Nimanhemin Road, Chiang Mai. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 4.30pm, and offers a selection of chemical-free vegetables that are grown in the nearby gardens and some chemical-free fruits (mainly bananas and papayas).

Baan Suan Pak 419/27 Wichayanon Rd., Chiang Mai (near President Hotel, same building with Thai Orchard Restaurant, Chiang Mai) This shop has a variety of greens and other vegetables, as well as nuts, seeds, some dried fruits, vegan foods and other foods. You will also find some household cleaning products there. Fresh produce that has a green label on it means that it is has been grown without the use of any pesticides or other chemicals. The shop is open from 9am – 6:30pm and is closed on a Sunday.

Raw vegan-friendly places to eat out

Giva: Raw Vegan Restaurant Loi Khor Road Night Market area, Chiang Mai Tel: 085-6248769

Giva is a small and cosy raw vegan restaurant. It is clean and the produce is always fresh. Most of the dishes are made to order, so waiting times can be a bit longer than in other restaurants. The

owner of Giva can make dishes to your specification, if required. Just call him beforehand so it is ready when you arrive.

We have had several large salads at Giva before, ordering 5-6 portions of salad in advance for the two of us and asking the owner to make our salad salt-free, spice-free, vinegar-free, soy-free, nut/seed-free, etc. He learned about the 80/10/10 diet and you can just mention that you want your dish to be 80/10/10-friendly.

Khun Churn: Vegetarian/Vegan, Buffet-Style Soi 17, off Nimmanhaemin Road, Chiang Mai Tel: 053-224124

Khun Churn is a popular vegetarian restaurant with a great atmosphere. It offers a buffet lunch for around 125 baht, and you can eat as much as you want. You can have fruits like papaya and watermelon there, as well as leafy greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and other raw vegetables. There are also cooked vegan options served at the restaurant. We highly recommend paying a visit. Open from 11am – 2.30pm daily. It is a popular place, so it is best to get there early.

Chiang Mai, and Thailand in general, is pretty noisy and suffers from pollution. If you are heading to Chiang Mai, it is best to invest in a face mask that will protect you from air pollution in the inner city roads. Be sure to learn about the local prices so that you are not charged extra for being a foreign tourist!

The Andalusia region of southern Spain is the second largest in the country. Andalusia has a lot to offer for fruit lovers when fruit is in season. We stayed in a small beautiful village called Coin, between Malaga and Marbella. Coin is an “in transition town” and the first such place in Andalusia. The local community there has come together to create a more sustainable economy and share best environmentally aware practices. From alternative energy through to its own money – those who are part of the “in transition” project have some great ideas about co-creating a more aware future. We were amazed by the amount of high quality organic fruit and vegetables that you can find in the area, although you do need to search for it as it is difficult to come across organic produce in local markets or supermarkets. We tasted some of the best tomatoes, cherries, melons, plums and peaches, as well as other produce, and met small-scale organic farmers who grow produce in their backyards to sell at the market and we made friends with them.

There is a popular 80/10/10 raw food festival that is hosted in Andalusia each year in September and the details can be viewed here: http://www.raw-fruit-festival.net/festival.php

Climate

It is the driest place in continental Europe, with a Mediterranean climate that is characterised by very hot and dry summers and cool and breezy winters. The wettest areas in Andalusia include most of the highest points above all of the Sierra de Grazalema and also Serrania de Ronda in western Málaga.

The average temperature in Andalusia throughout the year is over 16°C (61°F). The coldest month is January, and the hottest months are July and August. We stayed there between May and June, and towards the end of our stay in June the weather started to get very hot, both during the day and night.

Markets and organic produce

Some towns in southern Spain have daily non-organic fruit and vegetable markets. In rural and coastal areas, market days are varied in local towns so they don't coincide. There are generally three kinds of markets: indoor markets; permanent street markets; and traveling open-air street markets that move from town to town on different days of the week or month.

Ecuador is a Spanish speaking country located in South America, bordering Columbia and Peru. We decided to visit Ecuador when we were in Brazil and got recommended to explore Vilcabamba, also known as the “valley of longevity”. We spent a total of 9 months in the valley.

The incredible beauty of the Andes, pleasant year-round climate, and low cost of living has attracted a considerable amount of health-conscious people from around the world to come and settle in the valley.

Vilcabamba is located about a 45-minute drive from the larger city called Loja, to which you can fly from Quito. Vilcabamba is a common destination for tourists, mainly due to it being considered the valley of longevity, where locals used to live up to 100 years old and beyond (note: that was before the arrival of junk western and fast food).

Vilcabamba, Ecuador

Climate

There are generally 2 seasons in Vilcabamba: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season is between October and May, and the dry season is between June and September. The valley tends to get a considerable amount of rainfall during the wet season, with the local river overflowing and the village experiencing floods. Some years are better than others.

Markets and organic produce

Vilcabamba

Every Sunday morning, there is a market in the centre of Vilcabamba, where you can buy produce grown by locals, as well as produce that gets transported from other places in Ecuador. Some of the stalls sell organic produce, both fruits and greens, and finding them is simply a case of asking around. The best time to get to the market is around 6-7am.

There were also a couple of shops in the village when we lived there, both were in the centre. The owner of Café Sambuca, which is located in the main village square, has its own organic garden and sells organic produce at the café when it is available.

There are other small shops that sell fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis and they are located around the main square of Vilcabamba.

Loja

Loja is a larger town located within approximately a 45-minute drive from Vilcabamba. Whenever we could not get enough produce during the week in Vilcabamba, we would take a trip to Central Mercado (the central market) in Loja, which is located in the centre of the city. You will find a good selection of fresh, non-organic fruits and vegetables.

Sambuca is a popular place to hang out. The café is not strictly vegan or raw, however, they offer raw vegan options on their menu, as well as smoothies and juices. The owners of the café are familiar with raw foods and have catered for raw food parties. Ask them for a large raw smoothie and a salad and we are sure they will be able to accommodate your needs.

The Juice Factory The Central Plaza, Village Centre, Vilcabamba This is another popular place in the village. They serve a variety of vegetarian, vegan and raw dishes. Madre Tierra 2km north of Vilcabamba Centre (north of the river on the hill) Madre Tierra is a restaurant, hotel and spa located in very beautiful settings, with the views of Mandango mountain and the valley. Some raw vegan options are available. Some of their ingredients are grown on-site in small gardens.

Other information

The biggest downside of Vilcabamba and Ecuador, as well as South America in general, is the level of crime. This was the main reason that stopped us from settling there. Some locals are resentful towards the foreign tourists mainly because the prices in the valley have gone up, and the peace and simplicity of their lives was lost due to the arrival of western influences.

The Republic of the Philippines comprises of 7,107 islands (one of the largest island groups in the world). It is a tropical country with fascinating landscapes, active volcanoes, splendid beaches, tropical forests and friendly people who speak good English.

The island of Davao is considered to be the fruit basket of the Philippines, and is one of the world's leading producers and exporters of bananas, papayas and mangosteens. Davao has a very rich fertile volcanic soil, which favours the growth of fruits.

Just 10 minutes across the sea on a boat and you will find yourself on the much smaller and less polluted island of Samal, where we stayed when we were in the Philippines. Both Davao and Samal islands are situated in a typhoon-free zone. You will find an abundance of rich greenery and varieties of flora and fauna.

This stall fed us with scrumptious jackfruits for the whole duration of our stay. It is located right opposite the ferry port as you arrive from Davao. Some of the jackfruits there are wild. You will also find marang, soursop, rambutan and other fruit when in season.

We did not manage to locate any organic produce in Davao or Samal. Fruits are generally heavily sprayed there. We never went for vegetables, so if you are planning to visit and stay in the Philippines, we would recommend taking seeds that you can spout or/and taking organic barley grass powder with you.

Raw-vegan friendly places to eat

Veganism is not a wide-spread concept in the Philippines and it is a heavy meat eating country. There are no vegan-friendly places to eat in Davao or Samal.

The only place we would recommend you visiting to eat out is a durian restaurant in Davao called “D Market Place”, which is located at: Pryce Road, Bajada, Davao City, Mindanao.

Other information

We have found the island of Davao to be the most polluted place on the planet, with zero environmental awareness, which did not make us feel happy there. Samal is a less polluted place to stay, however, it is a small island with a limited choice of fruit. If you only eat organic produce, the Philippines is not the place to go as fruit is sprayed there.

Many people become concerned about the issue of malaria when they go to the tropics. Do you need to get vaccinated against it? Or do you need to take special anti-malaria pills for the entire duration of your stay in the tropics? Malaria is caused by a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes and it is a life-threatening disease. Its symptoms include frequent vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, loss of appetite and dehydration. Malaria is widespread in Africa, South America and Asia. Malaria cases have increased since nutritionally degraded western foods started to get consumed by these cultures. Fast food, overconsumption of meat and dairy, processed oils, white sugar, white flour, salt – all of these deadly foods have become staples for many people on this planet. Both of us have been in the tropics, for the most part, in various places in the world ever since late 2009. We have visited Africa, South America and Asia, and never took any pills or got vaccinated against malaria. Neither of us has caught malaria.

So, our first advice is to ensure that you eat a healthful, low-fat raw vegan diet, keep yourself well hydrated and live a healthful lifestyle – all of which is vital in helping you maintain a much stronger and robust body. We generally do not recommend taking pills or getting vaccinated, however this is always down to the individual’s choice.

If you have not taken any anti-malaria drugs or vaccines, and find yourself experiencing the symptoms of malaria, contact a local doctor as soon as you can and ask him or her to examine you. If you do have malaria, you can either go on a water fast to see if this helps your body heal itself from malaria, or you can

10. If you get bitten by a snake or a spider, go to the local

hospital without delay. Allow yourself to be treated by doctors, however stay away from hospital food.
