EIGHT STEPS TO A MORE APPEALING HOME

(NAPSI)—Your house can be more comfortable for youand have more curb appeal for the next owner with a fewminor home improvements, including one you can barelysee. Here are eight tips that can help:

• Get in on the outdoor living trend. Add a few comfortablechairs and table to the front porch or backyard to createan extra room and a welcoming look. An even better ideamay be to screen in the porch.

• Create an a-door-able view. Your front door is one of thefirst things people see when arriving at your house andwhat greets you every day when you come home. Keep itbright and welcoming with a fresh coat of paint and per-haps some shiny new hardware. While you have the painthandy, see if the shutters, mailbox, front porch or windowboxes could use a touch-up, too.

• Get good screens. Whether on the window, the door ora screened-in porch or pool, there are a variety of stylesand mesh fabrics available to meet a number of needs. One such screen, Phiferʼs BetterVue®, is designed tomaximize the outward view, making it sharper and morebrilliant. Think of it as “high-definition” insect screening.BetterVue is woven from smaller-than-usual yarns to en-sure durability and to improve the openness by 10 percentover conventional screening. This enhances the view andimproves airflow by approximately 20 percent while in-creasing protection against small insects by 10 percent. You can install it yourself, watch a simple step-by-stepvideo here, or have it done professionally.

• Keep things clear. Donʼt let your front walkway or thefront of your home look overgrown. Cut back on the shrub-bery, and consider plants in pots instead.

• Improve the lighting. Consider motion-sensing lights onwalkways and the driveway and lanterns on posts nearthe door.

• Opt for an awning. It can make your entryway more im-pressive and keep you and your family dry when you openthe door.

• Really rock your yard. Add a stone border around theflower beds.

• Count on this idea. Make sure your house number iseasy to read from the street.

Dehumidifiers Add Comfort, Keep Humidity In Check(NAPSI)—No matter the season or the reason, when homeown-ers must eliminate damp or humid conditions to create a morecomfortable home environment, a dehumidifier can be a valuabletool.By reducing the level of moisture in basements, living rooms, bedrooms and other living areas in the home, a dehumidifier canalso help limit the growth of mold and mildew, which thrive inhigh-humidity environments. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recom-mends the use of dehumidifiers to slow mold growth by keepinghumidity levels at less than 50 percent—especially during dampand humid months. There are a number of options available when choosing a dehu-midifier, so it is important to consider where and how it will beused and what size is needed for your space, and also to com-pare the available features that can help with the overall user ex-perience.The new Honeywell dehumidifiers, for example, include 45-, 50-and 70-pint units for a variety of uses. These dehumidifiers alsoinclude detachable water tanks with full-tank alert and automaticshutoff; smart digital humidistat controls that sense room humidityand activate dehumidification as needed to maintain preset hu-midity levels; and full-feature digital controls with electronic dis-play. And, each model is ENERGY STAR certified to help saveon operating costs. For more information and help choosing the dehumidifier thatʼsright for you, visit www.jmatek.com/dehumidifiers/.

High Tech Can Make Driving Safer

(NAPSI)—More than 420,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle accidents involvingdistracted drivers—but technology can help reduce your risk by improving your awareness behindthe wheel, no matter how old your vehicle may be.

Safe Solutions

Safe driving starts with smart decisions. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) firmly be-lieves safety is paramount in a moving vehicle, and a driverʼs highest priority must be maintainingsafe control at all times. Thatʼs why CEA supports legislation that bans texting while driving andplaces strict limits on the use of electronics by novice drivers. CEA also developed the InnovatingSafety campaign to help consumers and improve awareness and understanding of the broad spec-trum of safety-enhancing technologies available today.

Distraction Behind the Wheel

All kinds of things can distract you when youʼre driving—using your phone, daydreaming, talking toyour passengers or paying attention to anything other than the road ahead. Statistically speaking, newer drivers are over-represented in fatality and injury crash statistics, and studies have foundthat teens are more prone to dangerous distractions while driving.

Innovation Can Improve Drive Safety

For parents wondering what they can do to improve their teenagersʼ driving habits, there are allkinds of products available to help. Some products limit cell phone usage and texting abilities andcreate incentives for good driving behavior. Other devices connect you to your car, even whenyouʼre not in it, letting parents access information on their teensʼ driving habits, set “safety zones”and monitor vehicle location.

More advanced driver-monitoring solutions track the driverʼs eye movements and whether thedriverʼs hands are on the wheel. This technology can then initiate corrective action when the driverʼsbehavior appears to match that of a distracted person. Other high-tech safety products include blindspot indicators, backup cameras and crash avoidance systems that help drivers increase theirawareness of other cars, pedestrians and dangerous obstructions. Additionally, voice-activatedGPS navigational systems enhance situational awareness.

New-Car Tech For Your Old-Tech Car

The primary vehicles for most American drivers are more than 11 years old. Fortunately, many tech-nology companies are developing a broad range of aftermarket devices that can be installed seam-lessly in most cars to enhance the safety. For expert advice on solutions and installation for your vehicle, look for retailers whose installerscarry the CEA Mobile Electronics Certified Professionals (MECP) certification. There are more than3,500 MECP installers in the U.S. These experts have the training to ensure you pick the right so-lution and the skill to install it correctly. After all, smart driving starts with smart decisions.Learn MoreDiscover more safe solutions and find out how to get involved in this issue at www.CE.org/Innovat-ingSafety.
