Cllr Nick Wright

Cabinet member for planning and

economic development

Welcome

Local businesses are being urged to act fast to

claim a Travel 4 Cambridgeshire (TFC) green

grant to combat the county’s every-growing

congestion problem.

Aimed at getting Cambridgeshire to work, TfC - a partnership

organisation based within the County Council in Cambridge - is

willing companies on to claim a slice of the original £1 million given to

them by the Government’s Department of Transport from the ‘Local

Sustainable Transport Fund’ before the 31 December deadline. This

is to help employers to increase the number of travel services and

facilities on offer to their staff so that sustainable transport solutions

that hit congestion hard, while reducing carbon emissions and

supporting economic growth, can be fully achieved.

The grants, covering three strategic growth areas (the St Neots

to Cambridge and Royston to Cambridge corridors, as well as

Wisbech Town), will also provide an opportunity to deliver additional

communities.

Kate Day, TfC Project Manager, said: “Ultimately we are trying to

achieve a change in commuting behaviour by employees.

However, we recognise that this is not a straight forward option

for many people, so the grants are there to try and increase travel

choices. By changing to a car free or car sharing journey for one day

a week, we can all make a huge change to the congestion

issues, saving money, as well as improving our health and

that of the environment.”

The Workplace Sustainable Travel Grant is available

to improve the travel infrastructure at workplaces. This is

worth up to 75% of the costs to a maximum of £3,000 per

company and can be spent on initiatives such as car park

management, lockers, showers, pool bicycles and cycle

parking. Up to two applications are permitted per business.

The Workplace Sustainable Travel Event Grant, is

offering up to a maximum of £500 per business for running

and promoting sustainable travel events at the workplace

for employees (including those from several companies in

the case of area-wide events), such as Bike Week, Liftshare

Week, or the launch of a pool bike scheme or travel plan.

For businesses who promote car sharing, there is also

the Guaranteed Ride Home Grant. this means that if an

employee is unable to car share, for example in the case

of an emergency, the grant will help pay for the costs of

alternative travel to get them to and from work as part of a

scheme that will be set up. This eliminates the worry for all

concerned.

It is vital for companies who wish to claim these grants

to move quickly, as they are proving very popular with

Cambridgeshire’s businesses. “To date, there have been

11 applications for events and promotions, as well as nine

applications and expressions of interest for infrastructure

grants”.

For employers to be eligible, they need to be members

of TfC and must be located within the Cambridgeshire Local

Sustainable Transport Fund 2015-2016 area, details of which can be found on the TfC website at www.tfw.org.uk/aboutLSTF.php

improvement schemeCongestion is common on the A14

between Cambridge and Huntingdon.

The road doesn’t have enough capacity

there are weekly lane and carriageway

address this, Government has committed

to invest up to £1.5 billion to improve this

stretch of road. The proposed improvements cover 21 miles of road

and will combat congestion, improve safety, unlock

economic growth and connect communities. Upgrades

include a major new bypass through the south of

Huntingdon, widening part of the existing A14 between Swavesey and Girton, widening part of the A14 Cambridge Northern

bypass, widening a section of the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury and demolition of the A14 viaduct at Huntingdon.

The examination period for the scheme’s Development Consent Order application concluded on 13 November. The Planning

Inspectorate now has three months to provide a report and recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport.

Subject to the Secretary of State’s decision, the proposed scheme is expected to start in late 2016. The new bypass and

Advice for South Cambs Business to protect from Cyber CrimeWith the increasing use

of the internet to do

business, cyber security is

something all businesses

should be aware of.

Cyber security is about

protecting your computer-

based equipment

and information

from unintended or

unauthorised access,

change or destruction.

Here are some top tips from our local policing team

Have an IT usage policy which provides guidance to employees on what is acceptable use of company IT systems. Ensure

that employees read and sign this and a copy is archived for future reference.

Ensure this policy has a procedure of actions to be taken when an employee leaves the company. Removing their login

details from the company server will prevent them gaining access to company information after their employment is

terminated.

Maintain a robust password policy and ensure employees follow this policy through education and awareness. Numerous

crimes have been facilitated through the disclosure of passwords. This is normally done through password sharing with

social engineering and technical methods such as key logging.

Educate your accounts department that they shouldn’t change account payment details when instructed to over the phone

to recover losses even minutes after the crime has occurred. If a request is received to change account payment details then

the accounts department should contact the requester using contact details that they know to be genuine. In most cases

using known genuine contact details will reveal that the original request is fraudulent.

For more information on how to protect your business from fraud visit Action Fraud's website
