Concrete is one of the most commonly used structural materials in the construction industry. Despite its difficulties such as cracking shrinkage, low tensile strength and poor durability, its use is still increasing day by day, due to low cost and flexibility.

Concrete itself is simply a mixture of cement, aggregate and water, however making good concrete is far from simple. Good concrete has to have a satisfactory compressive strength and durability in its hardened state, as well as being cohesive enough to be transported in its fresh state. To achieve a certain quality of concrete, there is a complete range of products that help to achieve the high performance concrete which is desired. The properties of concrete depend on the quality and proportions of the ingredients used in the mix and the control exercised during various operations, starting from the mixing of aggregates to its placement for work and curing.

In our modern society, everything has to be tested for safety and concrete has no exception. Concrete has to be made to perform to set parameters and these have to be rigorously tested.

The main priority of ORYX MIX always remains the Quality Control of the product. We at ORYX MIX take great care with regards to all as-pects of quality control at every level of our operations. We demand quality from both our material suppliers and ourselves in order to meet the required specification of concrete mix.

ORYX MIX uses a comprehensive Quality Control system to ensure that compulsory quality testing is carried out at all stages of production, from the aggregate selection to the delivery of the ready mix to the customers.

Highly qualified QC Engineers and Technicians of ORYX MIX exert their continued and best efforts, supported by modern equipment and up-to-date technology, to meet international quality standards. Importance is given to the cost effectiveness, enhanced safety and durability of all concrete supplies.

ORYX MIX provide regular training programmes to all levels of staff on the equipment and its uses, safety and the latest technology in the construction industry.

Our quality control labs, handled by highly qualified and professional engineers and technicians, control the quality of the products according to the required specification, from the aggregate selection via the design of the mix and the batching of the concrete to the delivery of the ready mix to the customers.

ORYX MIX has the resources to match our product with any product of international standard, thereby ensuring that our products have the durability, workability and strength to meet your specific requirements.

All tests required for ensuring the continuous

compliance with concrete specifications are carried out regularly (every 3 to 6 months) in Sharjah Municipality / Fujairah Municipality. Third party laboratory tests are carried out as and when required.

ICE FACTORY / CHILLER PLANT

Supplying temperature-controlled concrete for the construction of large projects in the eastern region of the U.A.E is a must. Therefore, we pre-cool our tanks with the aid of chillers to meet the specifications required by the consultants; ice is added for further control. The factories in Al Hayl, Bidyah & Dibba produce ice for the whole region in flakes.

Our highly qualified and well trained QC Engineers and Technicians test and observe the quality of concrete on site and in the laboratory at the time of delivery. Relevant tests as per International Standard (BS, ASTM etc...) are performed to ensure the strength, durability and workability of concrete. A number of different tests can be performed on concrete, both on delivery at the site and in house laboratory, if required.

Thanks to its quality control department, Oryx Mix can produce concrete with various properties to satisfy the customer’s requirement.

Long lasting concrete “Durable concrete with very low water/cementitious material ratio & tested for various durability properties like Water permeability (DIN1048Part5 :1991) Water absorption (BS1881Part 122:1989), ISAT(BS1881Part 208:1996) & Chloride Ion penetration(ASTM C1202:1997. This is achieved through the usage of high range superplasticizing admixtures (PCEs) & additives like Microsilica, GGBS, Flyash, etc.

MATERIAL STORAGE

A. AGGREGATES

u Only specified aggregates according to both BS:882 and ASTM C33 is used.

u All aggregates are stored in well designed, drained stockpiles.

u The stockpiles are covered to protect the aggregates from the direct sunlight and air blown dust and chloride.

u The stockpiles have sufficient capacity to assure the continuity of work.

u Dry aggregates are used most of the time to control the total water content as specified.

B. CEMENT&ADDITIVES

u Cement & Additives that comply with the relevant BS and ASTM standards are used.

u Cement & Additives like Microsilica, GGBS etc are stored in watertight, white coloured silos with sufficient capacity to assure the continuity of work.

u Each silo is labeled clearly with its contents.

u All silos are equipped with filters to keep the plant yard clean from cementitous material’s dust.

u Test certificate from the cement factory is provided frequently.

C. ADMIXTURES:

u All types of admixtures are stored in a well identified steel tanks.

u Each tank is equipped with a separate dispensing device to give the accurate dose.

u All tanks are equipped with circulation pumps to prevent sedimentation of the solids.

u Only specified admixtures conforming to BS 5075, BS EN 1998-2-934 & ASTM C494 are used .

u A conformity certificate from the manufacturer is provided with each load delivered.

BATCHING

A. BATCHINGPLANTS

u All batching operations are carried out by a fully computerized batch plant.

u A print out is provided for each batch illustrating the actual quantities of materials which have been used.

u A qualified operator, who has the adequate experience with the product, operates the plant.

u Bins with adequate capacity are provided in the plant for each size of aggregate.

u The plant operator receives mix design and all technical instructions from the QC department.

B. BATCH REPORT

The batch report contains the following information.

u Time and date u Truck and driver numbers

u Class of concrete u Cement type and quantity

C. CONCRETE DELIVERY

Concrete is delivered to the job site by means of white coloured truck mixers.

u All trucks are maintained in good condition and checked frequently.

u Each truck is labeled with a serial number, clearly fixed in atleast two places.

u Each truck is provided with 25 liters of superplastisizer to adjust the workability of concrete if it is necessary.

u Each load of concrete is accompanied with a delivery note which contains the following information:

n Ticket serial number

n Concrete class & design mix

n Slump range.

n Temperature of concrete if required.

n Customer name

n Location of pouring

n Cement type and quantity

n Date and time

n Operator’s signature

D. QUALITY ASSURANCE

Inspection of incoming materials

u Every delivery of aggregates is visually checked by an ORYX MIX technician, in order to detect any obvious deviation or abnormality in the aggregate being delivered.

u If unacceptable deviation is detected, the truck is sent back to the supplier and the material is replacedwith good, accepted materials.

u If the dust content of the sand is suspected; quick check is done on site; and if the dust content is higher than the accepted limit, the truck is sent back to the supplier.

u The moisture content of the sand and dune sand is checked at least once a day as per QC plan. Dry aggregates are used most of the time.

u The same source of aggregate is monitored extensively on a regular, daily basis at our main lab in Fujairah/Al Hayl

CALIBRATIONPROGRAMME

To ensure consistent quality, a calibration programme is adapted for batching plants and lab equipment.

u A batch plant is calibrated once a year or whenever there is doubt as to its accuracy.

u The calibration operation is carried out according to ASTM C-94/C 94M-98c Cl.9 and a separate calibration certificate is provided for each individual scale.

HOTWEATHERCONCRETE

The temperature of reinforced concrete shall not exceed 320C generally or as specified at the time of placing with the approval of the consultant’s engineer.

To produce temperature-controlled concrete to meet the specification or maximum temperature of 320C, which is generally specified, many arrangements are adopted.

The use of chilled water will reduce the concrete temperature to a reasonable value, this is due to the high specific heat of water. Since water has a specific heat of about four to five times that of cement or aggregates, the temperature of the mixing water has the greatest effect per unit weight on the temperature of concrete. In general, lowering the temperature of the batch water by 2 to 2.20C will reduce the concrete temperature by approximately 0.50C. Water is cooled to as low as 5-100C using water chillers.

Sometimes, particularly in very hot weather, chilled water alone is not able to reduce the concrete temperature. The addition of ice is very important and the plant is equipped with a separate screw conveyer for ice. Ice on melting alone will absorb heat at the rate of 335 j/g. To be most effective, the crushed ice flakes are placed directly into the mixer as part of the added-mixing water into the weighing system through the computer, with the help of screw conveyors. For a more rapid blending of materials at the beginning of mixing, not all of the available batch water is added in the form of ice. Its quantity may have to be limited to about 75 percent of the batch water requirement, which depends on mixture proportions, w/c ratio and moisture content of the aggregates.

Dosage of admixtures can be increased or retarder may be used to extend workability and slump retention based upon the actual working conditions, so that concrete can be easily placed or compacted.

When operating with durable concrete mixes with very low water/cementatious materials ratio and where the batch water available is already very low, the aggregates used are dry/totally drained to minimize free moisture.

In general, use of a normally slower setting, Type II portland cement (ASTM C 150) may improve the handling characteristics of concrete in hot weather. When using slower hydrating cements, the slower rate of heat development and the simultaneous dissipation of heat from the concrete result in lower peak temperatures. There will be less thermal expansion and the risk of thermal cracking upon cooling of the concrete will be reduced. This is an important consideration for slabs, walls and mass concretes. Secondly, the cement temperature is controlled since fresh cement normally has very high temperatures. The cement silos are preferably given time to cool before being used in the production. Each 40C increase in cement temperature would normally increase concrete temperature by about 0.50C.

The use of supplementary cementatious materials (pozzolans) like GGBS, Flyash etc. as partial cement replacements will impart the concrete with a slower rate of setting and of early strength gain to the concrete, both of which are desirable in hot weather concreting, since they will also reduce the rate of slump loss in hot weather.

Retarding admixtures meeting ASTM C 494,Type D, requirements, which have both water-reducing and set-retarding properties, are used to reduce the water demand and ensure better slump retention under hot weather conditions.

All aggregates are stored in the shade and the cooling of aggregate is done through water spray at night. Since aggregates constitute 60-80% of the volume of normal weight concrete, a temperature reduction of 0.8-1.10C in the aggregate temperature can reduce the concrete temperature by 0.50C. The moisture is adjusted in the w/c ratio calculation through the moisture probes in the batching plant.

All equipment is painted white and this helps with the reflection of direct sunrays.

Lastly it should be noted that the temperature increase from the hydration of cement in a given concrete mixture is proportional to its cement content. Therefore, only enough cement should be used to provide the required strength and durability and not more. Concretes which obtain high strength at an early age will develop high concrete temperature during initial curing. These concretes should be given thermal protection, so that they will cool gradually at a rate which will not cause them to crack, since the temperature differentials inside the concrete, especially in mass concrete pours, are very high. If the cement content cannot be reduced due to the specification requirements then the use of pozzolon is always advisable.

INSPECTIONOFPRODUCEDCONCRETE.

Each individual load of concrete is checked visually by an ORYX MIX technician before it leaves the plant yard.

If necessary, a slump test is made for each load before it goes to the job site.

The temperature of the concrete is measured from time to time after initial checking.

One technician leaves with the concrete to be sure that the sampling and testing procedure is conducted accurately, according to the relevant BS and ASTM standards.
