Bordeaux: An Unforgettable MixUNESCO World Heritage city, a city center port, world famous vineyards, world-beating wines. The downtown area with its quays and historical old town center has maintained its classical and neoclassical architecture almost unchanged for over two centuries. Wonderful churches are to be found in the heart of the city, some of them on the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage routes. The Jurisdiction of Saint EmilionWithin easy distance by bus, passengers can explore the medieval village and surrounding chateaux of Saint Emilion, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 for its historic vineyard landscape.

The Gironde EstuaryRich in treasures such as the remains of the region’s third UNESCO classified site: the Citadel de Blaye was built as a fortress by Vauban, Louis XIV’s military architect.Facing Le Verdon, the Cordouan lighthouse at the mouth of the Gironde estuary is the oldest one. It was classified as historical monument in 1862 together with the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris.

The Médoc Wine RouteThe infamous Chateaux Road winds the visitors through most of the revered names of the Médoc – from Chateau Margaux to Chateau Mouton Rothschild offering the chance to explore the secrets of wine-making and wine-tasting in this most iconic of regions, and to understand the personalities and the politics that have shaped Bordeaux.

The Dordogne ValleyKey archaeological sites and Prehistoric remains are rightly celebrated there with cave paintings at Lascaux in the Valley de la Vézère, also UNESCO protected and dating back 1,600 years.

BordeauxThe Atlantic’s Key Port City

Bordeaux offers a rare ability to accommodate all size and types of ships on one of its three key berthing locations

�Bordeaux is ideal for small to medium sized boats, ideally up to around 210 meters in length. And as soon as you step off the boat, you are in the heart of the city.

�Bassens is perfect for medium-sized craft up to 250 meters in length, 20 minutes from Bordeaux center and on the way to the vineyards of Blaye or Saint-Emilion

� The biggest ships are best served by Le Verdon, from where the most prestigious chateaux of the Médoc are just 30 minutes away, while the city center of Bordeaux is a short 90 minutes by coach.

A fourth small berth is also available in the town of Pauillac in the Médoc, for smaller specialized craft.

Central BordeauxBordeaux has the immense advantage of a city center berthing that allows passengers to easily discover the charm of the town. Your crew can also take advantage of this proximity to the shops. Getting around is easy with the modern designed tramway which runs all along the quays, plus there is an attractive car-free old town, full of cobbled streets and pavement cafés. Taxis are also available for longer explorations.

Plenty of ChoiceFor a Free Half Day...If your passengers want some time to themselves, the region is also packed with ideas for how to spend their free time, either in or out of the city center.

MuseumsIf they want to stay within easy reach of the ship, Bordeaux has a rich and varied number of museums and art galleries that are both dynamic and inspiring. From the exciting CAPC Contemporary Art Museum to the classic calm of the Musée d’Aquitaine, this is a town that is rich in treasures.

Wine classesBefore heading out to the vineyards, the Bordeaux Wine School offers a range of short classes. A 90 minute class that is held in the wine bar of the flat-iron Bordeaux Wine Bureau building will leave your passengers confident enough to take on any chateaux owner.

Health and WellnessA little further afield but worth it for the glamour, the Wine Therapy spa at the Sources de Caudalie hotel, part of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte is just 25 minutes from Bordeaux.

GolfYour passengers may also enjoy a round at the Golf du Médoc: with two 18-hole courses, one of which has been selected for the French Open, plus tuition for all levels, a fully equipped driving range.

ShoppingSome may wish to spend a day as the Bordelaise do: hunting out antiques in the Chartrons district, tasting local seasonal products at the Saint Michel market, stopping for a drink at an outside café, or simply browsing through the many shops.

ThePerfectBlend City and VineyardAn example of a day tour: Explore the treasure of a UNESCO city and its world famous wines

The tour will start with a panoramic drive of Bordeaux: The WWII German submarine base, the Chartrons river front where the wine trade started, the ‘Esplanade des Quinconces’, one of Europe’s largest squares (12 hectares) and the 18th century ‘Place de la Bourse’. Architecture can be followed through history from the 13th century Cathedral of St André, up to the 18th century Grand Théâtre built in 1773.

Passengers will then be transferred to nearby vineyards South of Bordeaux. They will stop at prestigious estates to visit their cellars and enjoy a wine tasting.

After lunch, the tour of the Médoc will start just north of the city, and follow the magnificent Médoc wine road, located between the Gironde estuary and the Landes forest.

Passengers will have the opportunity to drive through the world famous names of Saint Estèphe, Pauillac or Margaux and to visit the cellars of renowned chateaux where the techniques of wine making will be explained during the visit, followed by a wine tasting.

A Taste of WineInsider’s Saint-EmilionAn example of a half day tour: Unlock the secrets of Bordeaux wine, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

This exceptional excursion will be hosted by the owners or winemakers of two Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé chateaux, Chateau Larmande and Chateau Dassault.

The winemakers have created a tasting of two wines with different themes and vintages. Using the same themes at each chateau, participants will be able to taste and compare:

� Second Wines: recent Vintage � The Effects of Terroir and Vintage: older Vintage

One portion of the route between the two chateaux will be a gentle stroll on foot, weather permitting to learn about terroir, harvesting techniques and recognizing grape varietals by their leaves.

Light brunch will be a moveable feast, with one snack served at each chateau, allowing participants to taste the two wines and then pair them with food.

Participants will also visit the ancient walled village of Saint-Emilion, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to winemaking traditions and superb medieval architecture preserved through the centuries.
