Dear Parents/Guardians,

Happy New Year and we’re off and running into our second semester of the

year already! I was amazed and impressed with the band and choral

performances of our middle school students prior to the holidays, and

particularly noted the quick growth of our 5th

grade band members

Sadly, our nation dealt with the tragedy that struck Sandy Hook Elementary

in Connecticut, which naturally makes us reflect as a school community on

how we conduct business daily to keep our students and staff safe at all times.

We continually monitor our practices and are reflective as a building on how

we can be alert and diligent at following processes consistently. I’d like to

thank our PTA for heading a quick project under the National PTA to have

the students make snowflakes to send to Connecticut in an effort to create a

“winter wonderland” for surviving Sandy Hook students to return back to

school in. Additionally, fifth grade teacher, Mr. Quayle, coordinated an

opportunity for NRMS students to sign a banner we had made for the Sandy

Hook school community that offered our support to them. Many of our

students wanted to reach out to help in some way so both of these efforts

provided that opportunity for our students.

Last week, all NRMS students had the opportunity to experience the fun,

excitement, and motivation of Andy Thibodeau, a national speaker in the

area of student leadership. Follow-up sessions were held with all student

council members in grades 5-8, and then again with our 8th

grade Leadership

students and Honor Society members at our Middle Level Leadership

Conference which included 15 other area middle schools. The premise of

Andy’s presentation is to make care contagious. In other words, spread the

good work done at and for the school onto others! The students and staff

greatly enjoyed what Andy had to offer and were reminded of how each of

them can continue to develop their internal leadership qualities by getting

involved in activities at school. Be sure to ask your student about Andy’s

visit to NRMS!

Since our return back to school this month, teams have begun conducting

benchmark assessments in the area of reading and math, 8th

graders taking

courses for high school credit took midterms, and our Winter Sports Club

has begun under the direction of Mrs. Dostal and Mr. Filips. Additionally,

our wrestling coaches (Mr. Benze, Mr. DeMattie, Mr. Foldesy, and Mr.

Vadini) sponsored their annual tournament, and NRMS hosted the district

Power of the Pen tournament (coordinated by Mr. Anderson and Mrs.

Drescher). These events could not take place without a great amount of

parent help and support which we greatly appreciate!

PTA President’s Message Happy New Year to everyone! It’s hard to believe the school year is half over! PTA volunteers have been hard

at work around the school. Thank you to everyone who has been donating their time. Thanks to April Lozinak

and her committee for their hard work with the Memory Book. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Fall

Fundraiser. With all of the orders, and Marie Laheta’s hard work, PTA raised over $4800.00!! This money

will be used for the kids and our school- so thank you! In addition, thank you to the many PTA parents who

volunteered to help at the Jump Rope a thon run by the PE department, the Leadership Conference and the

Power of the Pen. Thanks to Helena Johnson for all of her hard work with the Sunny D labels. With all of your

Sunny D labels, we were able to obtain over 160 books for our school. Each team will receive 13 new books!!

Keep saving those labels!

At our January meeting we selected our Nominating Committee. The following people were voted in: Jen

Porter, Michelle Yuzwa, Brad Hughes, Mary Ellen Watrobski and Beth Knull. Becky Humes will be the

alternate. If you are interested in being on the Executive Board for the 2013-2014 school year, please fill out

the Executive Board form (in the newsletter) and return it to the PTA mailbox by February 1st, or contact

myself.

I will be accepting nominations for the Ohio PTA Achievement Award. If there is a teacher, parent or someone

in the PTA that you feel has done an outstanding job and goes the extra mile for our students- please take the

time to nominate them for this award. I will accept nominations up until one week before our March meeting,

which is March 12th

. We will be voting at our March meeting. No nominations will be accepted from the floor.

You may email or send your nomination to me.

North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes January 22, 2013 Community Room

Call to Order: 9:35 a.m. Lynn Dorman, President

Pledge and Welcome

SECRETARY’S REPORT – Mary Ellen Watrobski

Nov. minutes posted online. No changes or additions to be made.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT – Jen Porter - none

TREASURER’S REPORT – Sandy Mraz

Balance on hand: $33,665.63

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mrs. Vojta

A lot has taken place since our last meeting. I just want to mention the Sandy Hook tragedy. It really

hits home when something like that happens. We’ve been spending time as a district reviewing procedures.

We will not be afraid to question someone who is around without i.d. Unfortunately we would’ve increased

security if the bond issue had passed. Thank you for your support of the Sandy Hood community.

We had numerous concerts before the holidays. It’s incredible to see the growth in the students,

especially the 5th

graders. It’s hard to believe the year is half over. Some eight graders took midterms last

week.

We have benchmarking going on, the students use the computers. We changed things a little bit, because

the media center needed to be shut down for testing. So, with the exception of the 5th

graders (because of the

length of their math test) we are having each team take one day to do all of their testing. This will also help to

prepare the students for the future online OAA testing. So far it’s going well, and we don’t need to shut down

the computer lab. We are looking to having more mobile devices in the future for testing.

Winter sports club has started. This year we have been able to arrange with our transportation department

to get two buses to come early after school, so they can fully use their ski passes. The kids are happy to get an

extra hour of skiing.

We had another Pride of NRMS since being back from break.

We have a meeting tonight at 6:00 p.m. for the 5th

grade trip to the CVEEC. Tomorrow the 8th

grade

parent meeting for HS registration will be in the PAC. Eighth graders are encouraged to attend with their

parents.

Andy Tibido is coming in to do student leadership conferences. All students will attend an assembly.

Then, Student Council will have a special workshop. On Friday there will be a leadership conference with

several other schools for 8th

graders who are leadership students or honor society students.

This Saturday is the Power of the Pen.

Date changes: the basketball tailgate party will be on Feb.7th

, so this Thursday’s games have been

rescheduled for that date. We may need help from PTA during the tailgate party; I’ll let Lynn know what we

need. Feb. 5th

we had concerts scheduled, but there is a home basketball game, so the concerts have been

changed to March 13 in gold gym.

TEACHER REPRESENTATIVE – Mrs. Haberkorn, Mrs. Connelly

Thank you to the parents who helped with the parties before winter break and for your continued support.

SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE – Heidi Dolenzal

No re-elections of board members. No legislation changes. There is a survey going on regarding the bond

issue, just looking for community feedback, some of you may be contacted via a phone call. It’s about a 10

minute call. It’s a well-rounded survey, as far as demographics. There will be 400 done.

Stuff the Bus will be March 15 & 16 at Giant Eagle.

OFFICER’S REPORT

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Lynn Dorman

Thank you for having your children do snowflakes for Sandy Hook

Mrs. Bonk is retiring, so we will be doing something for her.

Susan Finelli’s father passed away on Saturday.

Susan Kieklak needs breakfast items donated for Power of the Pen, as well as help passing it out his

Saturday morning.

I will be accepting nominations for the PTA Achievement award. Please let me know if you would like

to nominate someone. You will be responsible for the presentation & getting the nominee and their family

(secretly) to Founder’s Night. Nominations will be accepted until our next meeting.

Mr. Francescone is working hard on the Jump-a-thon. We will need volunteers to help during P.E.

classes on 1/28 & 1/29. Money is also being raised through a student raffle. Money raised will be donated to

the American Heart Association.

The newsletter deadline is Friday at noon. E-mail articles to Becky Humes.

COUNCIL DELEGATE- Lori Krzwycki

We met on 12/6; Mrs. Voijta was the special guest, and she shared what has been going on at NRMS.

The phone survey was discussed.

The district is looking at permanent improvement money to see what most needs to be done.

Next school year’s calendar is complete and posted.

The district is hoping to add a third class of all-day kindergarten.

The Taste of NR was a big success & both foundations earned over $6,000.00.

Fall Fundraising Final Wrap Up: Once again, thank you to everyone that

participated in the Taste of Home/Ultimate Beverage Sale. The December delivery date went well with the helping hands of students, custodians, secretaries and Lynn Dorman, Beth Knull, Susie Perez, Valerie Kanieski, Karen Maguire, Nancy Porter, Susan Kieklak, Linda Rudy, Lori Krzywicki , anyone I missed (sorry) and all families that picked up their orders. Only 2 orders were left at the end of the pickup time! With all of those perishable items… that was great! An added thanks to Treasurer Sandy Mraz, who was always ready for another deposit or check request for prizes and fundraising company bills! Because we chose our own prizes this time, it was more work. In the end, we sold the remaining NR Bears bags and about 40 NR Bear dog tags. Our profit increased as our costs decreased. I have confidence that we will vote on donating the remaining 105 dog tags to the spring carnival prize committee. WHEW!!! Your support of North Royalton Middle School PTA is appreciated. Robert Matus won the IPOD Touch and Cameron Lipp won the$25.00 I-Tunes gift card. The 5 winners for $10.00 I-Tunes gifts cards were: Sarina Morganti, Mindy Fairbee, Hamdi Ali, Bradley Humble and Callie Papenfuss. Four students sold 20 items for the NR Bears blankets and twenty- two sold 10 items for the Handel’s pint cards. Thanks to Handel’s and Gearin’ Up for discounting the costs of these items. Hope you enjoyed the tastes of these special snacks and coffees/ beverages. I know my family did! Marie Laheta, NRMS PTA Fall Fundraising Chairperson

TOGETHER WE CAN…

Parent Teacher Association

Make A Difference Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends:

The beginning of the school year marks the beginning of another school year of opportunities and

challenges for the students of North Royalton Middle School. We all want to see our students become the

best they can be. We try to support them in many different ways throughout the school year. One of the

most important ways we can support and encourage our students is by becoming a PTA member. Your

$6.00 membership fee helps provide social activities and creative challenges for our students. Our PTA

volunteers chaperone socials, provide tutoring, and assist the staff in many different ways.

Please show your children that their education is important to you by joining the NRMS PTA. Fill out

the bottom portion of this sheet and enclose it and your $6.00 membership fee in an envelope marked

“PTA Membership”, and return it to the school via your child as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome at

our PTA meetings, but it is not necessary to attend the meetings in order to become a PTA member. The

meeting dates and times are as follows:

Tuesdays at 9:30 AM (All meetings will be held in the H.S. Community Room unless noted otherwise):

09/18 Dec.: no meeting 03/19 (MS Loft)

10/18 01/22 04/16

11/19 02/19 05/22 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important Information

Did you know?

Every year, each PTA unit must report their number of volunteer hours to Ohio PTA to maintain our tax-

exempt status with the Federal Government!

What hours should be tracked?

Time spent writing PTA agendas, minutes, correspondence, reports, newsletter articles

Time spent on PTA-related activities at school or within the community: party planning meetings,

parties, fundraising activities

Telephone time regarding PTA business

Travel time to and from PTA activities or travel time spent shopping for PTA related items (party

food, decorations, etc.)

Attendance at any PTA related meeting, workshops

There are several ways for you to track your volunteer hours:

E-mail volunteer hours directly to me: [email protected] . This is the BEST way to communicate your

hours to me. If you remember at a later date you did not document your hours, this is a great way to

still let me know what time you volunteered! Better late than never! Please do not submit hours to me

via email that have already been captured on paper

There will be a sheet at all PTA meetings for you to log volunteer hours

Committee chairpersons should have a form available at all large events for you to document the

volunteer hours you contributed to that event

There will be a form that you can fill out in every NRMS PTA monthly newsletter [you can print the

form from the online copy of the newsletter]. Return to PTA mailbox or send to school with your child

in an envelope marked “PTA Volunteer Hours”

What I need to know when you submit hours:

Your name

Month activity took place

Number of hours you volunteered under each category (service, fundraising or legislative)

Please help to capture the true amount of hours we contribute as PTA members for NRMS. If you have any

questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help and your time! The NRMS PTA, staff and students

appreciate all you do!

Sincerely,

Karan Kyle
