North Royalton City Schools Honors Carmen Rademaker as “teacher of the year” and bryan Sheffield as “Support Staff Person of the year”

North Royalton City Schools named Carmen Rademaker from North Royalton Middle School as the “Teacher of the Year” and Bryan Sheffield, Assistant Head Custodian at North Royalton High School as the “Support Staff Person of the Year.” The formal presentation of these awards was made at the annual North Royalton Education Foundation Reception at Carrie Cerino’s this spring.

Carmen Rademaker has distinguished herself as an exemplary teacher since joining the North Royalton staff in 1980. She has taught at Valley Vista, Albion and Royal View Elementary before joining the NRMS staff 14 years ago. Carmen is immensely respected by students, staff, parents and colleagues. During her time in North Royalton she has been involved in the various curricular initiatives and is constantly looking for new ways to help students and new things to learn herself.

Kirk Pavelich, principal of North Royalton Middle School presented Carmen with the award. He said, “Currently she is a 6th grade math teacher and team coordinator on the Diamonds team and she has done an outstanding job with her students, often staying late into the evening to plan new lessons and activities that will help all of them succeed.

Our staff recognizes the fact that Carmen is an outstanding teacher who works tirelessly to bring out the best in her students. She once commented to me that when she first came to NRMS she didn’t know anyone and didn’t have any friends here. Now after 14 years in our building she not only has a great many friends, but she is also well-liked and respected, not just by the colleagues on her team and grade level, but also by staff members throughout the building.”

Carmen was very touched and in her thank you speech said, “I have been in 12 different classrooms and the one thing that remains constant is the kids. We are all in it together for one thing – the kids. I am honored to be a part of the North Royalton City School District family.”

Bryan Sheffield joined the North Royalton staff in 2005. “He has made an incredible difference in the lives of all he touches,” said Superintendent Ed Vittardi. “His commitment, care and collaborative style are a tremendous asset to the high school and the entire district.” Bryan was an integral part of the district’s strategic planning process by not only his participation on the management team but also offering his insights and leadership during the two–day retreat planning sessions.

Both Mike McGinnis and Sam Grida, assistant principals at North Royalton High School presented Bryan with the award. They said, “Bryan is a phenomenal asset to our school. The traits that represent Bryan the most are tenacity, commitment, class, productivity, dependability, and a leader.”

Bryan said, “I am pleased and honored to receive this recognition. You believe in me and I will always be that person you can count on. Thank you for creating a work environment where employees can share ideas and have the opportunity for me to be a part of something as meaningful and important as the strategic plan committee. I enjoy my job and I enjoy working with the kids. No two days are the same. I still have a lot more to give to our schools!”

Vasil and Smith Named North Royalton City Schools Friends of Education

Teacher of the Year Carmen Rademaker was joined by her husband, Jim, who also was recognized for his retirement from the district along with (back row) Carmen’s sister-in-law, Sharon; daughter, Kelly; and her sister, Millie.

Superintendent Ed Vittardi, NRHS Assistant Principals Mike McGinnis and Sam Grida along with Support Staff Person of the Year Bryan Sheffield.

Each year, the North Royalton City Schools recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the school district with the Friend of Education Award. This year, the district is proud to present two outstanding individuals, Larry Vasil and Jim Smith, with the 2011 Friend of Education Award. Vasil and Smith

were presented with recognition plaques at the North Royalton High School Sports Banquet at the Performing Art Center on March 16.

Larry Vasil has been the North Royalton Education Foundation (NREF) president for the last five years and also started the North Royalton Stadium Foundation serving as the chairman. Under his leadership, the NREF has given over $40,000 in mini grants and scholarships to benefit the students of the district. Of great significance is the fact that during this time, he has had no children in the school district. He and his wife, Mary,

have been 30 year residents of North Royalton. They have two adult children that are graduates of the North Royalton City Schools. Vasil is in his 33rd year as a State Farm Insurance agent in Parma. He is a former coach in youth athletics in North Royalton and continues to sponsor little league games. While his kids were in school, he and his wife were active in the PTAs and the Band and Athletic Boosters. They chaired the concession stand for both football and soccer for seven years.

Jim Smith has been a steadfast volunteer for the North Royalton Athletic Boosters serving presently as vice-president. He was a tireless levy volunteer and was also involved in the district strategic plan process. Smith was also on the school levy committee in 2009. Smith is a North Royalton resident and President of Big Game Capital, LLC. He also is a member of the advisory board for the Cleveland chapter of Midwest Council for Children with Disabilities and he has coached various youth teams in both baseball and soccer through the years.

Both Vasil and Smith have assisted in the fundraising efforts of the North Royalton Stadium Foundation. As of the beginning of June, more than $1 million has been raised for the stadium project.

“To say these folks have been ‘friends of education’ is a true understatement,” said Superintendent Ed Vittardi. “The amount of time and effort they have given to make a difference for North Royalton City Schools students is beyond countable hours.”

Larry Vasil, Ed Vittardi, and Jim Smith

Interesting Facts about the Class of 2011

North Royalton High School Graduates 376 Students Friday, June 3 marked a new beginning in the lives of the 376 graduates of North Royalton High School. The commencement program, held at the majestic State Theatre in Playhouse Square began with Music Director David Vitale leading the Commencement Band and Band Seniors in a selection of music. The RSS Lakewood Color Guard did the presentation of the colors followed by the Commencement Band playing the National Anthem.

As the band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” the seniors, dressed in gold and purple gowns, proceeded to their chairs and were welcomed by Senior Class President Max Schlessel. Both Adriana Krasniansky and Kali Savoca shared stories, quotes, and life-learned lessons with their fellow graduates.

High School Principal Carol Moehring gave her final commencement speech, as she will be retiring at the end of the school year. Moehring then presented the class and introduced Superintendent Ed Vittardi who expressed his sincere congratulations on a milestone of such great significance. He asked the graduates to reflect on those that have enabled them to get through each and every day. “I hope that you take time to express that kindness, gratitude and thank all those that have helped you through your life.”

The roll call of the Class of 2011 was announced by Seniors Matthew Bobereck and Anna Busi. Carol Moehring provided the closing remarks.

Congratulations Class of 2011!

One of the goal’s of the North Royalton City School District Strategic Plan is to obtain student feedback on all aspects of our district. The Class of 2011 participated in a survey to share such reactions. In addition, students will periodically be surveyed up to five years after graduation. The above charts are excerpts from the comprehensive survey.

North Royalton Education Foundation GrantsThrough the generous support of the North Royalton Educational Foundation donors, Foundation trustees were able to give $5,500 in grants to teachers within the district this year. Highlights include:

District-wideRACHEL HOAG: “Positive Reward Systems for Children” Housed at the Early Childhood Center as well as the North Royalton Middle School, several copies of the Tough Kid Tool Box book & CD will be purchased for use in dealing with students that present challenges in the classroom. With over hundreds of interventions to search, teachers and administrators at the ECC, middle school, and throughout the district can use this resource to develop a plan with new effective ways to help students.

SUSAN FINELLI: “birdmania” This in-depth project will provide second graders visiting the Nature Center in the spring with a comprehensive lesson on birds before, during and after their visit. Before their visit, students will engage in various classroom activities (identifying birds, building bird houses, create bird legends) in multiple subject areas to enhance their interest and understanding of animals and the interactions between living things and their environment.

ECC KindergartenJEANEttE MODIE “Learning through Music” This project will be used by Kindergarten students using music to introduce reading and math materials that will strengthen understanding and provide differentiation if needed. Education songs will be recorded on CD’s to be used individually by students with accompanying books. Students will use the materials when student assignments are complete and others are still working, during class free play time, and during indoor recess.

AlbionAMANDA McCLAIN/SHANNON WINKLER “Geared Clocks” The geared clocks will be utilized in second grade classrooms to help students better understand the concept of time by manipulating the hands of the clocks during intervention and math flex grouping. These clocks are unique because the hour hand moves appropriately as the minute hand is moved.

Royal ViewKAtHRyN HINDELL “Integrating Guided Reading

into the Classroom” The purchase of a set of materials called Reading and Writing Instant Learning Centers will be used during small group work time. The kits have eight different instant centers with four different activities at each center. These learning centers are designed to be independent activities to help the student self-check their work. There are enough materials for up to four students to work at once. This gives the flexibility to have the students work independently or in groups.

Valley VistaCHRIS GORbEtt “building a Math Library” This grant will help to begin building a library of math manipulative for the staff and students of Valley Vista to support the diverse learning needs, strategies and concepts taught in the general classroom. This collection will include resources aligned with the state standards including but not limited to telling time, fractions, money, and geometry, as well as to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

bEtH tHOMAS “Non-Fiction Fun” This project is designed to purchase items that will aid with the differentiation of the curriculum to better accommodate learners at all levels and to support the academic content standards for second grade. These materials will be used to supplement the science, social studies and non-fiction reading, and they will be used to write extended response questions to help students prepare for the OAA.

Middle SchoolCAtHy DRESCHER “Debate in the Middle School”A pilot debate team within the Enriched Language Arts/RICA classrooms will be formed with interested students. During the first year, purchased materials, Speak Out! Debate and Public Speaking in the Middle Grades, The Great Debaters, and Speaking Across the Curriculum will be used to help students gain valuable instruction and knowledge in the useful art of debate. If this proves successful, the program will be expanded throughout the middle school.

DON FILIPS “Let the Digital Natives ‘Flip’ Out!”Middle school students and teachers will be trained in fifth and eighth grade computer literacy classes to use digital camcorders and tripods to be their own producers/directors of school related content. Once students are trained, the technology will be used in all subject areas, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. Student-created content will be displayed in NRMS classrooms, on the WNRMS Morning Show, the NRMS Facebook Page, NRMS assemblies/presentations, and the new North Royalton District Web Page.

SARAH FRANKO/JOANNE REID Project “board”Project “Board” will enable students to use educational/academic board games to enhance their problem solving and critical thinking skills, while also making connections to core content standards. The entire fifth grade teaching staff, as well as the enriched language arts/math will have access to the materials purchased through this grant. Using board games to supplement the core standards and curriculum will allow us to differentiate and to best meet the needs of each individual student.

LAURA WHItEHEAD “Hear ye, Hear ye!”The Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Project will provide wireless listening centers for students to engage in the reading process either by following along in the text or taking a “reading” break and listening to the story. The listening centers can also be checked out for teacher use in the classroom. The ability for the wireless listening centers to be on different radio frequency channels can allow for students in different teams to listen to a book in the shared pod area near their classrooms. Audio books can be played using the portable CD player, an IPod or MP3 player or computer.

KAtHy ZAMbORSKy “Moving Forward with Flip Movies”Students will use the Flip cameras to video tape themselves and their peers to be used in presentations using movie software and PowerPoint in computer literacy classes. Projects may include researching the history of the desktop computer, public service announcements highlighting the importance of Internet safety, as well as promoting the atmosphere of “The Bear Way” philosophy of the North Royalton Middle School.

High SchoolbARb SOZA/MELISSA KARAGIOZIS: “Pasta Machines” The purchase of six pasta machines for students in Gourmet and Entertaining, International Cuisine, and Best of Baking classes to learn how to make homemade pasta like ravioli and fondant for cake decorating. The purchase of these machines will enhance the experience of students

interested in pursuing culinary arts.

Distance Learning Arrives at North Royalton Middle SchoolElisabeth Miller showed her PVX Software and Webcam she was able to purchase as a recipient of the NREF mini-grant last school year. The program brought museums and art expert lectures into her classroom through the use of the equipment and distance learning.

Cheri Wells from the Early Childhood Center explained how her grant money enabled the school to purchase a series of music CDs that contained movement songs and music for their preschoolers.

Some of the 2010-11 NREF Mini-Grant Recipients: Shannon Winkler, Rachel Hoag, Susan Finelli, Kathy Zamborsky, Sarah Franko, and Laura Whitehead
