Thursday Breakout Sessions 10:45-12:00 –Room 102 - Rhyan Garcia-Helping Students & Teachers CONNECT: An Intervention Model to Pro-mote a School Climate of Resiliency- Research has proven that the quality of the teacher-student relationship strongly impacts a student’s academic achievement, social/emotional development and functioning. Positive teacher-student rela-tionships impacts a student’s ability to become resilient and withstand adversity while negative teacher-student relation-ships contributes to failure. By focusing on the teacher-student relationship, school counselors have the opportunity to impact the success of a large number of students. This presentation emphasizes the CONNECT model, which utilizes skills based from Child Centered Play Therapy. School counselors will be provided with a model of assisting teachers in evolving a set of skills and attitudes to create successful relationships with students. By emphasizing the relationship of students and teachers, school counselors contribute to a climate of resiliency, thus preparing students to overcome ob-stacles and adversity that impede success.

10:45-12:00 –Room 108- Jordan Chesler- Creating the Culture & Expectation of Dual Enrollment and Post Second-ary Education -As we teach our kids to set goals to attend post secondary education we can help them develop tools to cope and become resilient when things don't go as planned. 10:45-12:00 – Room 109 - David Chehey, Julie Drews, & Rose White - Practicing Mindfulness Within/Beyond the Classroom: Strategies for Self-Care and Student Success - Self-care, mindfulness, and stress management tech-niques for counselors -- along with exercises, activities, and resources for students -- are relevant and effective in foster-ing/improving school climate, self-regulation, and resilience.

10:45-12:00 - Room 113 - Kim Kane, MPA - Think Strength-The program to be presented, Sources of Strength, the core of the Idaho Lives Project, is the only evidence-based, best practice, peer leader program on the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s Best Practices Registry and “harnesses the power of peer youth social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying, and substance abuse. [Sources] increases help seeking be-haviors and promotes connection between peers and caring adults.” Sources reinforces resiliency in youth and teaches students (and adults) to rely on their strengths during difficult times. In addition, Dr. Joiner's interpersonal theory of why people die by suicide (feelings of burdensomeness and not belonging) will be briefly presented, as the Sources of Strength program counters these feelings. 1:00-4:00– Cafeteria -Chuc Diemart & Wanda Bouchard-Current Court Rulings & Implications for School Counselors

1:00-2:15– Room 102 -Angela Robinson- Professional Counselors ASCA and ACA- Counselors are the backbone of

resiliency. We are PROFESSIONALS supporting our students and families to advocate for themselves.

1:00-2:15- Peggy McFarland & Shannon Shayne - Creating Resilience for Girls with Small Group Interventions Based upon extensive research, this presentation will provide resources for conducting small groups for girls to achieve overall wellness, resilience, and to help girls resist more serious problems as they grow older.

1:00-2:15 – Room 108 -Adrian San Miguel - Passion. It is what should drive our conversation in working with par-

ents and students about the value of CTE. -By helping students understand their passion and interest, they can see

all their opportunities and be better prepared to overcome failures and adversity in their journey to career.

2:45-4:00 - Room 102 -Jennifer Tachell & Katie Bubak-Azevedo- A Journey Through the Escalation Cycle: Support-ing Students with Challenging Behaviors –Increasing resiliency in students makes them better able to cope with big emotions and therefore return to the learning environment more quickly on those occasions when they have a "meltdown". This session will help school counselors understand the escalation cycle and how to support students with challenging behaviors so that they can help students to become more resilient. 2:45-4:00 - Room 108 -Jason Hudson - Hands-On Career Training Without Student Debt-Registered Apprentice-ship Options in Idaho For diverse reasons, an academic course of study at a college or university is not a good fit for many Idaho students. Whether it is because they prefer to learn in a hands-on environment than in a traditional class-room or because they are not in a financial situation to forego a full time income and take on mounting student debt, the decision not to pursue a college degree does not preclude a well paid, respected, and secure career.

2:45-4:00 - Room 109 -Nick Smith - Understanding the Idaho Career Ladder and Master Premium

2:45-4:00 - Room 113 -Joy Miller - State of Idaho Scholarship Programs Scholarship programs are essential to students going on to college, which is where students learn resilience and over-coming adversity. Educating counselors on our programs is essential to their professional development.

Friday Breakout Sessions

10:45-12:00 - Room 102 -Lori Lodge & Angela Robinson - College Begins in Kindergarten, Tools K-12. Cultivating resiliency and preparing students for their future to overcome adversity begins in kindergarten and should be a FLOW thru their Senior years of high school. It's all about ME! Students OWN their futures and work toward buy-in with the help, support and guidance of Professional School Counselors.

10:45-12:00 - Room 108 -Carmen Brooks- Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho-PERSI "Go" Workshop -Great for those employees who are close to retirement, this will help them understand their options and the retirement process. Benefit estimates may be provided

10:45-12:00 - Room 109 -Jennifer Tachell & Jena Bubak - The Basics of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Sup-ports PBIS gives educators a new way to think about behavior and is a framework for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for ALL students. Additionally it is the only approach to addressing behavior that is specifi-cally mentioned in IDEA law and is implemented in all 50 states.

10:45-12:00 - Room 113 -Kelly Hall - SPED Department Management 101: Google to the Rescue! Providing practi-tioners with tools that will enable them to better understand the needs of the students and families they serve as well as ways they can provide training and support to students, families and teachers that will assist students to be resilient. 1:15-2:30 - Room 102 -Randi Brattin - Using Google Forms to Organize Your Program. Learn how to use Google Forms to collect data on everything in your program from student behavior, student visits, parent visits, teacher meet-ings, lessons, student/parent/teacher interest, and much, much more to help serve your student population's growth

1:15-2:30 - Room 108 -Rhyan Garcia - Involve Me & I Learn: Experiential Activities to Promote Student Resilience. Through the use of experiential group & classroom activities, students are provided the opportunity to experience suc-cesses, identify obstacles, develop improved self-esteem, and take greater responsibility for their actions. Each activity presented in session has been chosen for it’s applicability at enhancing a student’s ability to overcome adversity and prevent failure. Change, emotional growth, and personal empowerment are all among the benefits of participating in an effective experiential activity. Because experiential activities are often focused on the task or activity at hand — rather than on the therapeutic aspect of the experience — students are more likely to behave in an unguarded and genuine manner. School counselors learn strategies to provide students the opportunity to identify and evaluate the behaviors that he/she exhibited during experiential activity, as well as the thoughts or prior experiences that may have prompted those behaviors. Through actively experiencing the activities, participants will recognize the power of experiential pro-cessing as a means to heal and leave with impactful tools to enhance their school counseling programs.

1:15-2:30 - Room 109 -Dr. Jennifer Hill - Helping Your Teachers (and yourself) Write Better College Recommenda-tion Letters. For many at-risk high school seniors, simply filling out a college application is a victory and a sign of their resiliency. High school counselors and teachers are often asked to write college recommendation letters as part of the application process for at-risk students, ivy-bound students, and everyone in between. This session will focus on not only the skills and strategies for writing strong rec letters, but also the skills and strategies necessary for school counselors in helping the teachers at their schools write strong rec letters as well.

1:15-2:30 - Room 113 -Dr. Moody & Michele Stefanic - K - Career: Learn about free ACT resources to prepare stu-dents on their journey toward college and career readiness. Resources from ACT and the ACT Center for Equity in Learning provide counselors with actionable data to assist students and information students may use to overcome barri-ers to college and career readiness. 1:15-2:30 - Library Alison Lowenthal & Michael Humphrey - Preparing Students for Post-Secondary Goals: Virtually Through VR. Preparing learners for a 21st century job market and/or post secondary-education opportunities. Almost no one gets the first job they apply for, most people will experience this as a “failure” in their life. However, this sense of “failure” is not what matters; what matters is having the skills to overcome these challenges and use them to better your future. Digital literacy skills are essential to success in college and the workplace. Digital literacy is not just knowing how to use a computer it is about using technology to change the way you think, overcome challenges, and increase opportu-nities. This is a critical skill for all students, and is an identified “gap” in the services provided to students with disabilities. A strong digital competence helps prepare all students to overcome challenges that they will face.

Friday Breakout Sessions Cont’d 2:45-4:00 - Room 102 -Beth Hoover - Healthy Relationships: Teaching Middle School Students the Skills They Need to Get Along Together. Resilience is about more than academics. Students need social skills that will serve them their entire lives. That's what our lesson helps with - teaching students what they deserve in healthy peer relationships. The skills our lessons teach can help students build resilience in all their relationships. When students primary needs, like relationships, are taken care of, it frees them to be more focused and potentially successful at academics.

2:45-4:00 - Room 108 -Sara Scudder & Inessa Palnikov - Life Maps. The goal of this session is for audiences to under-stand the correlation between early life mapping/planning and how it can effect students in overcoming their failures

2:45-4:00 - Room 109 -Dr. Sherawn Reberry & Jeff Simmons- Pathways to Career and College through Idaho Digital Learning and Partners. Students / Teachers / Counselors will learn about the different options available for students, as well as adults, regarding pathways forward. This session relates to the theme of the conference because it is important to understand options and how our future can be resilient, no matter where we are. 2:45-4:00 - Room 113 -Josh Lane & Jennifer Tachell - What RAMP Can Do For Your School: Reflections and Re-sources to help your program go from good to great. A comprehensive counseling program informed and reinforced by data driven interventions will allow counselors to become/remain central figures in the cultivation of resilience in all students.
