C5.2 Professional Service Mentorship of junior faculty As a senior faculty, I have been an effective mentor of a number of young Omani

demonstrators, lectures and others who are on their way to becoming excellent educators and independent researchers in accordance to the Omanization process in the Department. Haydar Al-Lawati received training in research in analytical chemistry in preparation for his PhD studies. He published two papers with our group (publications no 29 and 38). He also consults with me on various aspects of teaching of Analytical Chemistry I. Bushra Al-Waheibi our young lecturer joined the Analytical Division as a demonstrator. During this time she received mentorship in both teaching and research. Recently she was teaching Chem. 3341 (Analytical Chemistry I) in close consultation with me. She also consulted with me regarding preparations for her forthcoming PhD programme. Ahmed Al-Harasi our young Research Associate receives mentorship in the Research aspects. He received training in preparing a research proposal which have been submitted for funding to the Deanship of Postgraduate studies and Research at Sultan Qaboos University. He was involved with co-supervision of two final year project students in 2006 and 2008 with me.

C6. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

C6.1 Research Experience

1. During my doctoral research, I acquired experience in the synthesis and

structural elucidation of fluorigenic labels based on the coumarin nucleus. 6-coumarin sulphonyl chloride and its analogs such as 4-methy and 7-methyl 6-coumarin sulphonyl chloride were synthesized and used for derivatisation of amino acids and phenol compounds. The fluorescence and phosphorescence properties of the labels and the derivatives were studied and used for the detection of amino acids in biological fluids and food samples using HPLC. I

continued the project after my Ph.D. by studying fluorescence properties of the label in micellar and micro emulsion.

2. As a post-doctoral research fellow in Tokyo, I was involved in the synthesis of chiral derivatisation reagents needed for HPLC separation of enantiomeric anti-inflammatory drugs and amino acids.

3. During my sabbatical scholarship with Prof. J. N. Miller, I worked on the development of methods for the analysis of polyclic nitro aromatics using fluorescence quenching of various fluorophores. The method gave low detection limits for the analytes.

4. During my visit to Prof. M. E. Diaz Garcia at the University of Oviedo, I was involved in the development of optical sensors for toxic metals based on molecular imprinting techniques. The project is being continued now at SQU to involve the imprinting process of pesticides and their analyses on HPLC or as optical sensors.

5. Currently, I am working on the development of analytical methodology and instrumentation: drug analysis in pharmaceutical and biological matrices, monitoring of organic pollutants and toxic metal ions in water and food samples using techniques such as HPLC, FIA, SIA, GC and GC-MS.

6. I was the group leader of Group 4 (Analysis of Volatiles and Essential Oil) of the completed HM Project "Bioactivity-driven Chemical Investigation of Omani Biodiversity for Medicinally and Agronomically Valuable compounds. The Development of Omani Natural Product''.

7. Other projects I am interested in involve the development of Microfluidic Systems for Routine Analysis of Pharmaceutical Samples.
