Once a poor kid was given an assignment by a teacher on what he wanted to be when he grew up. the kid did not hesitate for a minute and wrote a seven-page paper about his aim to be the owner of a horse ranch. he covered many details, including an exhaustive plan of the house and the stables. the teacher returned his paper with a big “F”, and then explained to him that he had gone nuts—a boy with no money or resources can’t attain such ambitious goals. then the teacher offered an opportunity to rewrite the paper with a more realistic attitude. the boy replied instantly, “keep the “F”, and i will keep my dream.” today the boy is grown up and owns a 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of a 200-acre horse ranch and still has that school paper—framed over the fireplace.

Moral: Follow the calling of your heart. Unless we are nuts about something, how will we be all that we can be?

But wait, there is a prequel. Once a monkey found a pile of nuts inside a box. the box had an opening at the top. the monkey slid in his hand and grabbed the nuts. now his hand had become a fist. The monkey tried to get his hand out; the opening was big enough for the hand to slide in, but too small for the fist to come out. The monkey had a choice, either to let go of the nuts and be free, or hang onto the nuts and keep trying to get free. he chose the latter. For the monkey, the nuts held the same significance as the ranch dreams held for the boy. unfortunately, the box had been intentionally placed there by some smart monkey-hunters who came and caught the monkey.

Moral: Curtail the calling of your heart. If we keep going nuts about something, we will never be all that we can be!

Similar stories, opposing morals. Why? Because we searched for the morals at

a wrong place. You see, the lesson here was not of the heart, but of the head. While both the monkey and the boy held on to their nutty dreams, there was a fundamental difference in their pursuits: the monkey had little to gain and everything to lose, while the poor boy had everything to gain and little to lose!

Often, our professional or personal triumphs don’t lie in the dreams of the heart, but the logic of the head. On our ability to distinguish between an opportunity and a threat, between a permanent and a temporary gain, between reality and fantasy. and above all, in our knack to pinpoint the lessons surrounding the daily stories of our lives…

cybage defeated tech Mahindra (tech M) by three wickets to clinch their win at the eleventh ankur Joglekar Memorial (aJM) inter-it cricket tournament held at the Poona club ground. the cybage team scored 140 runs at a loss of 7 wickets in 19.4 overs to bag the aJM champions trophy and ` 40,000 as cash prize. the challenge of 137 runs set by tech M seemed difficult with wickets falling at regular intervals before unbeaten knocks by Prashant Dwivedi (38 not out–21b, 3x4, 2x6) and Sanket aikal (29 not out–11b, 2x4, 2x6) helped the team reach the target with just 2 balls to spare. Our star cricketer, Prashant dwivedi, was adjudged Man of the Match while kaushalendra Singh was feted as the Bowler of the tournament.

Cybage goes Solar the rooftop cafeteria at cybage tower 1 has witnessed a sea change with abundant greenery, relaxing canopy corners, and a large and well-stocked cafeteria. the latest development at the rooftop cafeteria is the successful installation of 204 solar panels with a capacity of generating 61.54 kW. as part of its go-green initiative, cybage inches closer towards greener pastures. this installation will generate sufficient electricity to power all the computers and lights on one floor of the Cybage towers. Besides financial savings and carbon credits, we are excited about contributing to the shift towards earth-friendly, renewable energy.

you can do to succeed. So spend 50% of your time thinking about hiring and developing the right team and the rest will take care of itself.”

richard dedicates his ascent to his parents and his family, who have been his inspiration.

We ask him about tips on achieving the elusive work-life balance, and he answers in a matter-of-fact manner, “today, everyone is accessible 24x7 due to the presence of the internet and mobiles.

hence the concept of work-life balance has become more and more difficult to attain. it takes deliberate planning and effort to strike the right balance. This helps significantly towards one's performance at work and a quality life with family.”

On a lighter note, when richard is not working, he can be found boating with his family.

For richard, india will always be an amazing place, the culture in particular. He recalls his first trip to India, “I packed five cans of peanut butter and 20 boxes of crackers because i didn’t think i would eat anything. On the flip side, I didn’t eat any of the packed food i carried but gained 10 pounds.

another high point was the delightful dinner with arun and his wife. the indian cuisine certainly left a great impression on me and i still eat a lot of indian food today, here in the uS.” an unforgettable moment richard still cherishes is his visit to the taj Mahal during the full moon. He finds the glow of the white marble ‘surreal’.

"We wouldn’t be where we are in our business today without the contribution that the Cybage team has made."

“In our offshore relationships, I would like an offshore team to feel empowered to raise a hand and say, there is a better way to do this... and to provide the inputs as though they were a part of Dealertrack...”

Winning partnerships

dealertrack’s association with cybage goes back to 2009 when the company acquired aaX, a suite of inventory management solutions, from a company called JM Solutions. richard recalls cybage as a vendor of JM Solutions. this partnership continued with dealertrack after the acquisition too.

richard feels that working with cybage has been a very positive experience. an interaction with arun, cybage’s extensive experience of aaX, and its work ethics convinced richard that with cybage, his employer has always been on the right track. he says, “the part that stood out for me during my sessions with the team at that time was the degree with which you rely on data and matrices to manage business. i think that was a learning for me; and as someone coming from a financial background, I completely understood that.”

talking about the passion that cybagians put into their engagements, he says, “i remember meeting the team when I was at the office, the interaction with the group—it was fantastic. i sensed lots of energy in the organization, especially from arun, around the way the company is run, and the values all of you live every

day. it’s something i would like to experience again at some point.”

richard, on empowering offshore teams, says, “in our offshore relationships, i would like an offshore team to feel empowered to raise a hand and say, there is a better way to do this. the team should be able to provide the inputs as though they were a part of dealertrack, which they actually are.”

his mantra for success is also fairly clear. “if you hire the right team, then there is virtually nothing you can do as a manager to fail. But if you hire the wrong team, there is virtually nothing

Richard McLeer, Chief Information Officer, Dealertrack Technologies, in conversation with CybageTimes, acknowledges Cybage as an effective partner, and expresses his gratitude towards the team’s contribution. He shares a few insights into achieving the elusive work-life balance, and speaks of his interesting experiences during his visit to India.

“The degree with which Cybage relies on data and matrices to manage business was the learning for me; and as someone coming from a financial background, I completely understood that.”

Richard McLeer Chief Information Officer, Dealertrack technologies

Richard has been a part of Dealertrack Technologies for the last 14 years, and since then, the company progressed from being a single product provider to a premier end-to-end provider of on-demand software and data solutions for the US automotive industry. His background in Accounting and his stint with Ernst & Young from where he got his CPA certification, has paved the way for his current role at Dealertrack.

Message to cybagians

“thank you for the contribution you have made to aaX and broadly to dealertrack over the years. We value the great relationship. i think it has been very predictable, steady, and well-managed. We wouldn’t be where we are in our business today without the contribution that the team has made. i want you all to understand how much we really appreciate your contribution.”

Talent beyond cubicles

Every individual finds his own mode of expression. For Sanket, it has always been acting.

Being a chatty kid at school, he would participate in elocution competitions. at that time, he had no idea about communication skills or public addressing techniques; he simply knew that applause is an assertion and acceptance of being good enough! he received constant motivation from his parents and teachers who encouraged him to participate in various inter-school drama competitions. he won numerous awards for his performances at events such as ‘Loksatta - Multi talent hunt’ and ‘all india Multi-lingual Fest’.

he recalls that he initially worked as a backstage artist in school dramas and along with that, he mastered his hobbies of tabla and dancing.

acting helps Sanket to re-live and enjoy every moment of his life, leaving an air of anticipation towards the untouched and the unconquered.

When Pratik opted for engineering, many of his teachers and fellow students told him that he is picking the wrong field, and should take up theater instead.

He was 4 when he first shook a leg on stage, in front of a crowd of three hundred, at an award ceremony in his town. his music teachers spotted his talent for singing and trained him further for two years.

after this training, Pratik received no other formal or professional training; but by this time, he was thoroughly sure of his love for dance, drama, and music.

there was no stopping him after that. he has won several inter-school singing competitions and danced in almost every annual day function, during his school and college years. he has been a part of the prestigious Purushottam karandak competitions too.

the nightingale of cybage, Suvasri debroy, was initiated into the world of music when she was just seven years old. her inclination towards music, dance, and art comes from her family, which has an artistic background. her grandmother was a vocalist and the first Guru and inspiration for Suvasri. Suvasri’s mother is a theater actor and has supported her in her musical journey.

On the academic front, Suvasri completed a diploma in hindustani vocal Music from allahabad university. She also has a national scholarship from the center for cultural resources and training Board, delhi. also a trained kathak dancer, Suvasri expresses her gratitude to her family and friends for their support.

currently, she is learning music from gautam Mukherjee in Mumbai. Suvasri has not participated in any reality show yet, though she has taken formal training from gajendrra Singh’s (founder of Zee TV's Sa Re ga Ma Pa show) Sa re ga Ma Pa academy, Mumbai.

Suresh M unplugged

early lifeduring his learning years, Suresh’s inspiration was his father, who was then a school headmaster and appreciated top-level students. he recalls, “When i was a child, whenever i used to go home with my report card, my parents used to ask me one question—who the topper was, irrespective of how good the progress card looked.” his father’s repeated questioning made Suresh think, “if someone else is able to do better than me under the same circumstances, then i should be able to do that too.” this egged him on to be a top grader throughout his academic years.

his professional inspiration comes from one of his former managers. “he was a level-headed, logical, and principled person. Watching the way he dealt with difficult situations or applied very basic yet creative thoughts while responding to rFPs or initiating Presales processes was my true learning. it is this kind of managers that anyone would love to draw inspiration from.”

Professional highsSuresh’s career took off when he joined tcS, Mumbai, as a trainee programmer

after completing post-graduation in instrumentation engineering from anna university, chennai. this was the time when his career veered towards uS-based clients. eventually, he moved to technical leadership and management roles while working out of uSa with leading companies such as Syntel, uSa, and MetLife, uSa. he played a critical role in accentuating the company profit by structuring large deals.

ultimately, unable to resist the call of his motherland, he returned to india and joined Syntel in Pune, where he worked before starting work at the hyderabad development center of cybage as delivery head in March 2013.

about cybageSuresh thinks of cybage as a company with a scientific approach. “I am amazed at the focus on delivery excellence and internal governance with an excellent tool support. there is so much thought process built in to bring in operational excellence. i am also amazed at the executive commitment towards enhancing internal efficiency and employee connect through various channels. While companies struggle to deliver with onsite presence, we are

fairly successful with our offshore-driven delivery,” explains Suresh.

Marching ahead, togetherLeadership for Suresh means freedom for all to think and contribute whatever they are best at. Suresh’s theory of leading his team is fairly simple. he says, “everyone is good at something and it is the collective effort that makes a team successful. giving enough freedom to everyone in the team to play their roles effectively will make them feel more responsible.”

his mantra for team building? “a professional and informal connect is important to understand how to back each other and succeed as a team.”

‘get that stress out’it isn’t stress that breaks us, it’s how we respond to it. and how does Suresh respond to it? “Yoga!”

he adds, “i practice this pretty regularly and it keeps me healthy and fuels my mind. To find strength to face various challenges that life throws at us, i strongly believe that we need to give our body and mind space to rejuvenate every day.”

Suresh, an ingenious engineer with more than 17 years of rich experience in IT, both in India and USA, heads the company’s operations at Hyderabad. He brings with him exhaustive knowledge of various domains. In his interview with CybageTimes, Suresh talks about his success mantra and his approach towards leadership that can illuminate the paths of many.

Suresh Mamunurudelivery head – hyderabad development center

Success mantraunderstanding the client unlocks the doors to success, says Suresh, adding, “the ability to understand the client environment, business and technology, and adaptively interfacing with the client is very important.”

his message for young professionals is: “understanding the expectations of the role, challenging oneself, continuous learning, complete dedication, and a service-oriented approach are the key values i follow.”

ties that liberateFor Suresh, family is everything. he speaks of his wife, krishna Priya, “We have been together through various phases of life and through sampling and prioritization, we were able to see what we wanted, and moved on.”

the proud father in Suresh comes to the fore. “Our 12-year-old son, SaiSrinivas, loves sports. While i’m not a professional player, i do play tennis and table tennis sometimes to unwind. Sharanya, who is 7 now, is taking music classes and loves to talk. if she has an audience, she will be very happy and engaged. they have taken our relocation to india quite well.”

giving back to the societytalking about his charity efforts, Suresh says, “i feel great working for our community-based group, ‘Parivarthan’, which raises supplies for the needy.”

the most treacherous yet thrilling of all the treks till date was an overnight trek to kulang fort. this fort, situated in the kalsubai range, stands 4,822 feet tall at the end of the Sahyadris in Maharashtra.

With the highest climb to the top, the fort offers amazing views of alang, Madan, and ratangad forts along with the Bhandardara dam. at a further distance, one can also see the tallest peak in the Sahyadris—the kalsubai.

On the way back, the cybagians felt that the trek gave them a sense of accomplishment and reinforced their confidence.

celebrating a milestone

Finding motivation on a Monday morning was the thought behind Monday and Beyond (M&B), one of the most popular cybage clubs with a reader base of more than 500 employees today. an inspirational article every Monday morning from fellow colleagues soon became something that most cybagians look forward to. the initiative that started in January 2013 recently saw its

100th article being published on 9th February, 2015.

this calls for a celebration right? that’s exactly what the M&B committee, with elston as director, Leticia as Makeup artist, robin as editor, ketan as critic, and anishya as Promoter & distributor organized. the event titled ‘an evening in Paris’ saw good attendance with several members sharing their feedback.

contributors of the maximum articles and maximum feedback were felicitated.

the felicitation was followed by the highlight of the evening—a treasure hunt that was organized around the theme ‘an evening in Paris’ with fun facts and clues related to the city of Lights. the action-packed event concluded with the victorious team being awarded with eiffel tower mementos.

a bird’s eye view of nature the ever vibrant trek unlimited committee recently organized a unique event—bird watching at Bhigwan.

Bhigwan is a small town around 100 kms away from Pune on the Pune-Solapur highway. it is also referred to as the ‘Bharatpur of Maharashtra’ because it becomes a hotbed for migratory birds during the winter.

The day trip to Bhigwan offered magnificent views and unforgettable experiences for bird watchers, nature lovers, and photographers. Painted storks, grey herons, black-headed ibises, night herons, flamingos, and little cormorants are some of the migratory birds that throng this area in winters as their home away from home.

golden memories tl: having witnessed the growth of cybage from a rented-bungalow workplace to a sprawling, modern twin-tower workplace, i feel a sense of association with the company. Signing on a new client, team outings, senior management meets, and our annual seminars are some of the most gratifying moments.

nC: i remember the past decade spent with cybage very well; nevertheless, a distinctly etched memory is of the cricket matches held in 2008 that we struggled with, but eventually entered the finals. Another fond memory is of the Microsoft bash held in

2007 for which we prepared a two-hour show and practiced on weekends for almost a month.

Special camaraderie tl: i have always maintained a healthy bond with my team. i think the key to bringing the best in people is to empower them, while making them aware of the operational boundaries of the organization that they are working in. i invest time to mentor everyone in my team and try to percolate this model, down to the ground level.

Managing righttl: understanding client requirements, relating the project to the big (business) picture, and mapping the execution needs with the team’s capabilities are essential for success. as a project manager, i believe in bring harmony and transparency across these groups to effectively manage and successfully deliver projects: a passionate team that delivers, a great client who trusts us, and a management that supports us.

after hours tl: cooking and listening to music helps me de-stress, while meditation aids introspection. i also enjoy an occasional long drive to a nearby beach or a hill station to revitalize my mind.

nC: i have a passion for adventure outings and exploring unknown destinations. Playing cricket and listening to the songs of Mohammed Rafi, S.P. Balasubramaniam, Asha Bhosle, and chitra, are my other interests.

Quotable quotes tl: remember that success is a journey, not a destination. So keep learning to be a better person. dream big and pursue your goals with focus and hard work.

nC: in your professional life, focus on creating value for the client. don’t shy away from connecting with the client, especially during tough times, as they say—‘baat karne se hi baat banti hai’.

Khushboo scholars My mother has been the only working member of our family.

She has supported my needs whenever she could. cybage khushboo was the beacon of hope when my college admission plans seemed impossible due to high fees. With their help, i could complete my education. i’m now supporting my mother by working for Yardi Software. using the knowledge gained, in future, i would like to develop an innovative solution.

My father could only support my education till the diploma level. it crushed me to think about halting my education and taking up a job after diploma. But cybage khushboo understood my plight and supported me with a scholarship to continue with engineering. My confidence was also boosted by the program in soft skills organized by cybage khushboo. though i am working with crompton greaves Ltd., i want to become an IAS officer so that I can work for the people.

My father works at Midc and is the sole bread-winner of our family. Pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering and that too in a city like Pune was impossible. cybage khushboo helped me fulfill my dream of getting an engineering degree. I have been hired by tcS through campus recruitments. Since this is just the beginning of my career, i wish to learn more and enrich my knowledge.

My father is an autorickshaw driver. Supporting a large family is an everyday struggle for him. after completing hSc, further education seemed unattainable for me. My father found out about cybage khushboo and the scholarships they provide to the underprivileged yet deserving students. it was with the help of cybage khushboo, that i was able to complete B.Sc. degree. i am placed with hSBc Software development and now capable of supporting my younger siblings. i wish to also study further to become a Software developer.

Supporting three children with the only source of income being selling snacks at the weekly village bazaar was challenging for my parents to make ends meet. Without the major financial backing of cybage khushboo, it would have been impossible for me to pursue engineering and develop my skills for the corporate world. i am successfully placed at accenture. cybage Khushboo gave me the confidence to learn more technologies and aim to become an entrepreneur. Some day, i also wish to write a book on ‘my journey into this technology world’.
