The Pediatric Trauma Program was established by the KiwanisCali - Nev - Ha Foundation in 1994, focusing on the needs foreducation and training in injury prevention and pediatric trauma.Their mission statement is ʺto develop local projects, which willreduce the number of children in our district who are killed orinjured by trauma.ʺ

ARE YOU READY TO HELP?A birth of a newborn is a joyous event in any lifetime. However,in 38 different countries, that amazing event can quicklyturn into a tragedy. With the Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International andUNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neona-tal tetanus. This deadly disease takes the life of one babyevery nine minutes — nearly 60,000 innocent babies everyyear. That’s 60,000 babies a year that will never grow up,play with friends, hear their mother’s laugh, or even dreamabout their future.A significant number of women also die due to maternal teta-nus. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny new-borns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensi-tivity to light and touch.Learn more about The Eliminate Project atwww.TheEliminateProject.org.

Last year, the California-Nevada-Hawaii District began a new district project: ProjectJump Start. This 2-year project is geared towards providing children from ages 0-5 a jumpstart during the most crucial years of an infant’s life. Project Jump Start is a great way to giveback to your communities and give infants the jump start they need to succeed, one baby step ata time. The potential of Division 38 West is more than enough to make an impact on ourcommunities through Project Jump Start.

Project Jump Start allows children to have a successful childhood, and to one daygrow to be competent, caring leaders like each and every one of us are today. By providingthis support to young children, we are giving them the opportunity to grow and becomestrong-willed individuals. Not only does this project affect our communities, but it goes as faras to provide a benefit to children internationally. By focusing on children’s education, health, safety, and wellbeing – we will be giving children all around the world equal opportunities tohave a fresh and vibrant beginning, a jump start.

Now here’s the fun part: how to get involved. Simply, by finding a project, or even better, making your own. Working with local organizations is a great way to get involved in theDistrict Project. Even Key Club International’s service partners: UNICEF, Children’s MiracleNetwork, and March of Dimes support our objectives in Project Jump Start. The amountsof service projects are endless, so what are you waiting for? I’m looking forward to hearingabout your club participating in Project Jump Start. By submitting articles, visuals, and adescription of your project to Jeanie Paek at [email protected], you havea chance to be spotlighted on the CNH Cyberkey for the whole district to see your involvementin the District Project. Subjects in any visuals you submit must sign a photo release form, which can be found on the Cyberkey.Together, Division 38 West can make an impact: one baby step at a time.
