What is Cyber Etiquette?

Manners applied to the Internet and the use of technology in everyday situations.

business lunches.

The oldest adage, revisited

If you don’t have anything nice that anyone else will give a shit about to say, don’t say anything

at all. And for heaven’s sake, don’t like your own status.

Can facebook get your fired?

Five employees fired from this:“Lydia Cruz, my coworker feels that we don’t help our clients enough at [work]. I about had it! My

fellow coworkers how do u feel?”

Hispanics United of Buffalo – 12.14.12:NLRB and administrative law judge concluded that “the employees’ Facebook comments amounted to concerted activity protected under Section 7 of the NLRA.”

Nick Bilton – What did he say?

Page 22: Darcy W Hardy,PhD April 18, 2013 # Got Cyber Etiquette?

What really got people going…

“My father learned this lesson last year after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to

complain that I never returned his calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “No one

listens to voice mail anymore. Just text him.”

My mother realized this long ago. Now we communicate mostly through Twitter.”

Page 23: Darcy W Hardy,PhD April 18, 2013 # Got Cyber Etiquette?

Bashing Nick

• My heart breaks for this man's father. • SHAME SHAME ON YOU. • Get over yourself.• Maybe Mr Bilton ought to listen to the song, "Cats

in the Cradle."• [Your father] should have called your sister and

told her how rude and what a butt you are and that he was writing you out of the Will yes said writing not texting or emailing but writing.

Page 24: Darcy W Hardy,PhD April 18, 2013 # Got Cyber Etiquette?

On the other hand…

“As a 17-year-old, it’s kind of frustrating to read the comments here and find them all made by

condescending older folks who don’t seem to get the gist of this article. As a society, we

communicate a lot more than we used to (or, at least, the younger half of us do). We’re constantly

in touch with each other, via text, e-mail, Facebook, whatever. If we don’t use these tools

efficiently, they will consume huge portions of our time.”

-Jake Soiffer, Brooklyn

Page 25: Darcy W Hardy,PhD April 18, 2013 # Got Cyber Etiquette?

Academia

• “Oh, the irony. It seems particularly ironic that academics, who make a living talking and hoping someone is paying attention, no longer think it is important if they themselves pay attention.” (Essig, Chronicle, 2.27.13)• Writing Across the Curriculum - model• Policies and rules that are student driven.• Sexting…men vs. women• Help students understand the risks.
