Marion County Extension and the Marion County Development Commission (MCDC) have once again joined together to sponsor the annual Marion County Photo Contest. The contest is open to all amateur photographers. Each person can submit up to 10 photographs. These can be all in one category or split between several categories. Categories include scenic (e.g., landscape and water scenes, historical and outdoor structures, skylines, and gardens), wildlife (e.g., animals, plants, and insects), and people (residents having fun, action shots—people doing things; no portraits, please). All photos must be taken in Marion County. Photographs should have a resolution of at least 240 dpi at 11 x 14 inches or be from an original photo negative, print, or slide. Landscape orientation is preferred. There are two divisions for each category; Adult (age 18 and up) and Youth (age 17 and under). Photographers should use their age on January 1, 2014 to deter-mine the division in which to enter. Entries will be judged by a panel on their creativity, photographic quality and their effectiveness in portraying Marion County. The three top photos in each category will be selected for exhibit throughout the county in the year following the contest. Photos will also be used in a 2015 Marion County Calendar. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons will be awarded in each category. A Best of Show prize will also be awarded. The entry deadline is Wednesday, June 16, 2014 at noon. Photos may be submitted on a single CD or attached to an email (limit 1 photo per email). Deliver CD to Marion County Extension, 210 N. Iowa St.., Knoxville, IA 50138, or email entries (one photo per email) to [email protected]. An entry form for each photo must be attached to the CD or accompany each email. Forms (and ad-ditional information) are available at the Marion Extension Office or online at www.extension.iastate.edu/marion. For additional questions, contact Karen Ackley, Ag/Horticulture Assistant, Marion County Extension Office, 641-842-2014, [email protected].

4-H Trend Spotters National 4-H Council & the 4-H Mall is looking for 4-H Trend Spotters. These members spot the next generation of style, fashion, and 4-H in their communities. We want 4-H youth to be the eyes and ears of the 4-H Mall with your friends, family, and fellow club members. 4-H Mall is always striving to introduce amazing new products, and no one knows more about what 4-H'ers want than 4-H'ers
themselves. You will send one product idea per month based on specific themes coming from 4-H Mall. Product suggestions
can be original ideas or existing products that you think would be cool with a clover on them. If 4-H Mall decided to make it,
you will be involved in the design process from start to finish, and you'll get that product free to show off to your friends and
family! After one year of participation we will send you some free 4-H Gear. If you think this program sounds like it was made
for you, please email [email protected] with your name, age, and a few sentences of why you would like to join.

Record Keeping
It is not too early to start record keeping. If you
weighed-in beef or if you have started an exhibit
for Dyer-Hudson it would be a good idea to start
record keeping. It is easier to do it as you go ra-
ther than trying to remember everything four
months from now.
The updated Marion County Record Keeping
Guidelines and Awards Guidelines came out in
April. Please be aware they did not change from
last year. However please remember that in or-
der to receive any awards members must turn in
a complete Record Book for the year applying
for.
Record Keeping/Awards Information packets are
available at the Extension Office or on the web
at: www.extension.iastate.edu/marion/info/
recordkeeping.htm
Setting Goals - A.R.T. It is very important to set goals for your project are-as, as well as the exhibits you are working on. There are three main parts to each goal:
1. Action: What you want to do in your project area or with your exhibit? “Learn how to work with model-ing clay.” “Create a sculpture out of modeling clay.”
2. Result: What are you going to do to achieve your goals? “Read publications from our club library, at-tend workshops, and practice with modeling clay.”
3. Time Table: When are you going to work towards and complete your goals? “During the year and at the fair.
Clover Kids
We will be having a Clover Kids exhibit in the Dyer-Hudson building again this year and all kids grades Kindergartin-3rd grade are invited to bring up to 3 items to be judged at the Marion County Fair. Judging will be on Thursday, July 10th from 9a.m. to 3:30p.m. in the Dyer-Hudson Building. All items will be on display during the Marion County Fair and will be released on Wednesday, July 16th beginning at 7:30p.m. along with the 4-H exhibits.
Conference Judging
As we begin fair season please keep in mind confer-
ence judging is a great opportunity for members in
many different ways. They get to share what they
have learned and experienced through project are-
as they are interested in. They may also have the
opportunity to learn new skills or ideas from the judg-
es. There are many different things a member can
learn from Conference Judging so please come
with an open mind, a positive attitude, excitement
for Marion County 4-H, and it will be a successful
day for all!
Here are a few things to remember for Conference
Judging:
● The ribbon placing/award winners are selected
by the judges and the judges decisions are final.
● Please respect the judges decision and remem-
ber that the decision was based on the exhibit
and the information that was presented to them
during the conference judging with the member.
● If you have a question during judging, don’t be
afraid to ask the judge or if there is confusion ask
for clarification of a question or comment from a
judge.
