PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Report on the Student Free Day 13 May 2016:

The Student Free Day on Friday 13 May was very productive for all the staff. The day was divided into two areas. During the morning staff were involved in Professional Development and the afternoon was dedicated to a curriculum and in particular assessment and reporting.

The Morning session focused on resilience and the staff worked with Hugh van Cuylenburg from “The Resilience Project”. Hugh and his team had previously presented to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students through the Tutorial Program. The students and the staff were united in their view of the high quality and value of Hugh’s presentation. It most certainly supported each of us to build stronger resilience but further to this it provided a range of strategies of how we can continue to build resilience in our young people.

The afternoon session was spent primarily on looking at Compass Learning Tasks and Common Assessment Tasks at each level (Years 7-10) across each Learning Domain. This aligns with our preparation to move to continuous reporting during Semester 2.

Whilst there are a number of individual teachers who are already using learning tasks as both a way of delivering homework and learning activites to students and a communication tool to engage parents in their children’s learning, it is not consistently applied across the school. A great deal of work is currently going into this to ensure that we are ready to move in this direction as a whole school as we move into Semester 2. Our consistent approach will begin with a focus on Common Assessment Tasks. Some staff may continue to use the Compass Learning Task platform for a range of other tasks, More information on this will be provided to as we move into this process.

Mid-Year Exams:

Year 11 exams begin this Friday, 27 May and conclude on Monday 6 June. Year 10 Exams will then follow and the Year 9 Exams after that. The GAT for any student undertaking a Unit 3/4 sequence will take place on Tuesday 7 June.

Information including exam timetable and expectations document have been provided to the Year 11 students at this time others will follow. This is the time for students to make their studies the number 1 priority, I do acknowledge that many students have already been preparing for their exams and this is highly commendable. We all know that hard work and strong effort will bring about positive outcomes. Please encourage students to see their teachers to clarify things that they do not fully understand prior to the exams. I know that students will put in their best effort.

picnics, singing and dancing, and ceremonies in which people join together and make reconciliation a reality.

The Nillumbik Shire Council and the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group has invited us to join with other schools on Thursday morning, 26 May in a range of activities.

Four of our students; two Year 12 students and two Year 9 students, will represent our school and be involved in the flag raising ceremony at the Shire Offices. Our senior students have been invited to provide a short statement of how Reconciliation is important to our school.

National Sorry Day (26 May, 2016) marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week. This day remembers the Stolen generations of children who were taken from their families to missions so they could learn the ways of settler culture. I am certain that once again our students will make us proud.

Follow on from IBAC:

As a result of the recommendations made through Operation Ord and Operation Dunham, recently, the Department of Education and Training has referred matters to the Office of Public Prosecutions. It is anticipated that criminal charges may be laid against one or more people named in these investigations.

Whilst there has been a period of calm across the media, over the next few weeks there will be the potential for the media to re-engage with its reporting of the issues presented in the Investigations as well as make comment about the action(s) taken by the Office of Public Prosecutions. As a consequence you may hear or read generic references made to The Department, Schools, Principals, Business Managers and even teachers potentially swaying public opinion in relation to the Government School System towards a negative light.

We all know that the inappropriate actions of a few misguided individuals is not a reflection of the system as a whole. In fact the vast majority of personnel irrespective of whether they work in Central Office, Regional Offices or Schools, undertake their day to day work within an ethical framework displaying a great deal of commitment and a high level of Integrity.

Over the last few months, the Department has put in place a range of strategies to ensure that Integrity and ethical behaviour remains high on everyone’s agenda. Processes have been altered to ensure consistent approaches across the system and some old practices have either been totally eliminated or changed dramatically. Everyone has the responsibility to raise the bar as well as the perception and pride in our system.

I ask each of you as members of our community to keep your ears open and speak into conversations that seem both misinformed and unfair. I will rely on your support in this matter as I do in most matters that relate to the profession, our school and our community, and I thank you in anticipation.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is with great pleasure that I am able to inform you that the Year 7 City Experience Camps will be occurring in July/August this year. Our Year 7 classes will be divided into three groups, with each class attending camp on the dates shown below:

• Camp One, Wednesday July 27 – Friday July 29: 7A, 7B 7C and 7D • Camp Two, Wednesday August 03 – Friday August 05: 7E, 7F and 7G• Camp Three, Wednesday August 17 – Friday August 19: 7H, 7J and 7K

You may have noticed that the cost for this camp ($250) appeared on your Eltham High School financial statement forwarded at the end of 2015; parents are requested to ensure payment is finalised for this camp by the end of Term 2. If payment by this date causes any difficulties please contact our Revenue Administrator, Paula Hogan (9430 5118), to discuss payment options.

To ensure students are able to fully participate in the City Experience Program, all students will need to have a Myki card with at least $30.00 credit.

The itinerary, camp agreement and consent forms, special dietary requirement forms, payment forms and Medical forms are all available on compass and a hard copy has been given to students. All forms need to be completed and returned no later than Wednesday 13 July, 2016.

If you have any questions about the Year 7 City Experience Camp or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Anam Javed on 9430 5270 or by email at [email protected].

Year 9 Camps and Pathways Program.

Last week our Year 9 students participated in a 3 day camp at Kinglake Ranges Wilderness Camp and a 2 day Pathways Program at school. The challenge based activities at Kinglake presented students with a range of physical and psychological challenges as part of a carefully planned growth and wellbeing program. If you are a parent of a Year 9 student I encourage you to ask about the camp and the activities students undertook. During the Pathways Program students spent one day preparing for and undertaking an interview during which they reviewed their reports, identified strengths and growth strategies and discussed work experience placements. The second day saw students discuss career pathways, Tax File Numbers and training requirements for work experience. I believe that that the 5 day program was a varied and rewarding undertaking for all who participated.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Harrison McBean and Mav Saill-Dilnot who have both just returned from trips overseas with Australian Youth Volleyball Teams.

Mav gives us an insight into her experience below;

How many buckets can you sweat in 2 weeks of volleyball? I found out the hard! way. With an average of 35°c and 95% humidity, playing sport in Thailand was a test of endurance both mentally and physically. Training in these conditions meant the constant consumption of vast quantities of distilled water, which seemed to instantly result in drenched clothing. We were also presented with many cultural experiences. A trip to the tiger zoo, multiple outings to night markets and a visit to the huge shopping centre, MBK, gave us all an understanding of what life is like in Bangkok. Whilst this was all exciting and interesting, this gave me a whole new appreciation of how privileged we are to live in Melbourne; it’s the simple things such as drinking water straight from the tap. As part of the whole Thailand package experience, plenty of the girls in the squad fell ill whilst on tour. Regardless, training had to continue at the same vigorous level and this meant eating yet more rice and hoping that it would stay down. Overall, the intensity and excitement whilst on tour was nothing less than a dream and it is an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Brooke Freckleton has been selected in the Australian Junior team to take part in Asian championships in July. More on that later from Brooke.

ARTS

Elizabeth Gower - Artist’s Presentation

The 2016 Artist’s Talk series continued last Wednesday with artist and VCA lecturer Elizabeth Gower presenting work to Senior School Art students and interested staff at lunchtime. Elizabeth was talking predominantly about her Collage works. These are based on traditional decorative patterns but created from everyday found printed matter, advertising and shopping catalogues. Her juxtapositioning of the traditional decorative and often ornate with consumerist trash creates aesthetically enticing artworks that reveal their criticality of contemporary everyday practices such as shopping, information overflow etc. on close inspection.

Elizabeth Gower’s work had recently been on show at Montsalvat during the ‘Laughing Waters’ exhibition and the Shire of Nillumbik has acquired three of her collages for the Nillumbik Art Collection.

Elizabeth Gower, Cycles 4, 2015

Throughout the talk Elizabeth presented her creative process and explained the artistic techniques and explorations of her research. Additionally to presenting her work she also answered questions about studying at the VCA.

Elizabeth Gower’s work can be viewed at http://www.elizabethgower.com/

Lunchtime Artist’s Presentations are an art initiative to expose VCE Art students to the wide spectrum of contemporary art practices. Artists give a 45 minute presentation of their work which gives students an insight into artists’ lives and practices and enables them to put their own work into context.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS17

Tuning Relationships with Music (TRM) is an 8-session intervention that aims to coach parents with a history of interpersonal childhood trauma and their teens (10 – 18 years) in interrupting negative escalating cycles of interaction, and to develop responsive patterns of communicating. Parents and teens are taught these in a combination of individual and conjoint sessions, through psychoeducation and a structured sequence of musical exercises that support acquisition and development of emotional competence (parent and teen) and emotion coaching (parent) skills. The intervention aims to equip parents and their teens with new interactive templates via which difficult issues can be worked through in a way that is experienced by each as emotionally safe. Supporting parents and teens to communicate initially through music is designed to assist them in changing non-verbal patterns of relating before working on changing maladaptive verbal communication patterns. When combined with teaching parents emotionally responsive parenting, it is hoped that this will change both the way parents respond to their teen, and the quality of connectedness between parent and teen.

Goals of TRM are: -

•To help parent and adolescent recognise and interrupt conflictual and negative escalating cycles of communication.•To help parent and adolescent increase responsive ways of relating to each other.•To help parents to use emotion coaching strategies to become aware of and connect to their teen’s emotions, to accept and listen to their teen’s expression of emotion, and to reflect on what they hear from their teen (Havighurst et al 2012). •To improve the mental health of both parent and teen
