D.C. UNITED vs COLUMBUS CREW SC RFK MEMORIAL STADIUM, Washington, D.C.

May 2, 2015 (WEEK 9, MLS Game #81) 7 p.m. ET (CSN-MA; TWCSN-OH)

One of the initial rivalries in Major League Soccer is renewed when a key clash in the Eastern Conference takes center stage as D.C. United and Columbus Crew SC meet on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United have reeled off five games without defeat, returning home after a 2-1 win at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, to move into a tie atop the East. Crew SC have put together a four-game undefeated run of their own following an impressive 4-1 win against Philadelphia Union on their home ground last weekend, sitting just three points out of the top spot in the division. Crew SC have taken points on each of their three trips to RFK Stadium, with two wins and a draw. United haven’t won in Columbus since 2007; Crew SC have won five of their seven home meetings since, with two draws.

Coaches record: Gregg Berhalter vs. DC: P3 W1 L0 D2 … Ben Olsen vs. CLB: P11 W3 L6 D2 D.C. UNITED D.C. United extended their undefeated run to five matches, coming back from an early deficit for a 2-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening at BC Place. United are in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with 14 points from 7 matches. LAST MATCH

Whitecaps FC took the lead in just the second minute, when Octavio Rivero's cross found an unmarked Pedro Morales just inside the box and he hit a perfectly controlled volley past United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra.

But United were back on level terms just seven minutes later when center back Bobby Boswell shook off his marker to powerfully head home a Michael Farfan cross.

The match took a turn three minutes before the break when Matias Laba clipped Fabian Espindola as he raced into the 'Caps half, and referee David Gantar issued him his second booking of the match to leave the Caps down a man.

The visitors grabbed the eventual winner in the 64th minute. From a quick counter, the ball fell to Chris Rolfe, and he buried his shot past Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted from just inside the box.

United head coach Ben Olsen made three changes to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo at RFK Stadium. Chris Korb came into the back four in place of Taylor Kemp, and Nick DeLeon and Fabian Espindola came into the side for Davy Arnaud and Jairo Arrieta.

D.C. UNITED (4-4-2): Andrew Dykstra (Travis Worra 58) - Sean Franklin, Bobby Boswell, Kofi Opare, Chris Korb - Nick DeLeon, Perry Kitchen, Michael Farfan, Chris Pontius (Conor Doyle 90) - Fabian Espindola, Chris Rolfe (Luis Silva 76).

TEAM NEWS United extended their undefeated streak to five matches with a second consecutive away victory in the victory

at Vancouver. They have not lost since the March 22 defeat at the New York Red Bulls. “We’re certainly happy with the three points. It’s not an easy trip to come out here and take anything away,”

said United head coach Ben Olsen. “Obviously, the red card helps. But I thought up to that point, we were in good form. I’m just happy for the guys to come out with the win.”

Chris Rolfe scored a goal for a second consecutive match, playing up top as part of a strike partnership after lining out as a wide midfielder from the start of the season.

“He’s a classy player. His heart rate doesn’t get too high when he’s in front of goal. He’s pretty even keeled and a wonderful finisher. When he gets his chances, he does very well,” Olsen said.

Fabian Espindola made his first league start this season, partnering with Rolfe up top, after coming off a suspension levied in the MLS Cup Playoffs last year.

“I think he did great. For him to play the full 90 minutes, physically, is pretty impressive,” said Olsen. “He’s a very dangerous player. He didn’t get his looks on goal enough but once he gets in there and we get a rhythm with him, things will start clicking better. He’s always a danger and it was good to have him back.”

Michael Farfan moved into a central midfield role and contributed his first assist of the season, his first in MLS play since May 25, 2013, when he was with Philadelphia Union.

Travis Worra finished out the victory playing the final 32 minutes in goal, coming on to make his MLS debut in place of an injured Andrew Dykstra.

“To have those guys in front of me helped me out the whole time. As soon as I ran out there in the field, Kofi Opare and Bobby Boswell both looked me in the eyes and very calmly said, ‘Relax, you will be fine.’ I think before Bobby even said that, he said ‘Congrats,’” Worra said. “I still had a game to play so I asked him to tell me what to do. There was a job at hand and I was there to get the job done and get three points.”

Dykstra was making his second consecutive start between the posts in place of an injured Bill Hamid, who last played in the April 11 match vs. New York Red Bulls when he suffered a thigh contusion.

“Obviously, it was Travis Worra’s first game. I think he did really well in his first MLS game. He’s been with us since the preseason and we know what kind of goalkeeper he is,” said Opare. “Obviously, it’s hard to get minutes especially when you have Andrew Dykstra and Bill Hamid in front of you, but he’s more than capable of stepping in and getting the job done. We had confidence in him when he came in.”

Bobby Boswell scored his first league goal in almost exactly one year – his last previous goal in MLS came April 26, 2014, vs. FC Dallas.

COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC stretched their undefeated streak to four games, rolling to a 4-1 win against Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 7 matches. LAST MATCH

Crew SC took the lead as Kei Kamara hit for the opener in the 21st minute. Ethan Finlay worked his way down the right wing and broke free again, before lofting a ball that Kamara controlled with his chest and blasted underneath Union goalkeeper John McCarthy.

The lead was doubled in the 32nd minute as Finlay was on the receiving end. Waylon Francis put a ball from the left side directly onto Finlay's foot, and he simply redirected it past McCarthy on his first touch.

Crew SC extended their lead to 3-0 just before the halftime break. Emanuel Pogatetz floated a long ball toward Justin Meram, who was guarded by Union defender Maurice Edu. Meram managed to flick the ball in front of him and carry it 40 yards downfield before slipping a shot past McCarthy.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 64th minute when Eric Ayuk Mbu would provide some consolation for Union fans by smashing home a header from a C.J. Sapong cross past Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark.

But Finlay sealed the scoreline 10 minutes later after a blistering run and a beautiful Kamara pass that left him one-on-one with McCarthy for a chance that he easily finished.

Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter made no changes to the team that rolled to a 3-0 win against a 10-man Orlando City SC at Mapfre Stadium.

COLUMBUS CREW SC (4-2-3-1): Steve Clark - Hernan Grana, Michael Parkhurst, Emanuel Pogatetz (Tyson Wahl 56), Waylon Francis - Mohammed Saeid, Tony Tchani - Ethan Finlay, Federico Higuain, Justin Meram (Kristinn Steindorsson 66) - Kei Kamara (Aaron Schoenfeld 77).

TEAM NEWS Crew SC won their second match on the trot and extended their undefeated streak to four games following the

triumph against Philadelphia. Crew SC have scored seven goals over their last two games – they had scored five goals total through their

first five games of the season. Crew SC lead MLS with 12 goals this season, an average of 1.71 goals per game.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“I think it was a very good performance. The goal of the season is to navigate your way through the season. You want to be consistent, you want to keep performing and hopefully at the end of the season, the playoffs are there and you’re peaking at the right time to be able to win a championship,” said Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Ethan Finlay netted a pair of goals – his first career multiple-goal game – and added an assist in the win. Finlay had ended the 2014 season with five goals in his last seven matches.

“Anytime someone scores after not scoring for a little bit, it’s a relief, no matter what the circumstances are,” said Berhalter. “I think that [Finlay] has been playing well and for him, we couldn’t be happier because of the work he has put in assisting teammates and now for him to get on the scoreboard, that’s great.”

Said Finlay: “I think we’re one of the best offenses in the league. I think we’re a team that no one wants to play when we’re all clicking. The other part of that is, when one guy’s not having a great game, you can have three other guys that can really make a huge impact and a huge difference. So when you have that, that’s extremely dangerous throughout the season. We’ll need it. We’ll need it from all types of guys.”

Kei Kamara scored a goal for a second consecutive match and now has five goals for the season, tied atop the MLS Golden Boot standings with Vancouver’s Octavio Rivero. Kamara’s goal came in his 200th career MLS league appearance.

“He has been fantastic. Besides the assist and the goal that he had, he was dominating out there. Every ball in the air he was winning, bringing his teammates into the game,” said Berhalter. “That’s what we imagined when we signed him. We are very pleased with him so far.”

Said Kamara: “I’m here to click with the team. I’m here to help the team out. I’m happy I’m getting on the same page with a few of the guys, and it’s working out … I feel like I’m really part of this league, I’m really part of MLS. I feel like I’m one of the originals. I’ve been around here so long; that’s why I feel like I’ve played more than 200 games. I respect this league so much.”

Justin Meram also netted for a second consecutive game and now has three goals for the season, tied for third in the MLS Golden Boot standings.

"I am most happy with the collective effort of the group and I have been telling people that our style of play needs the guys working together and that is our whole training. Everything is about passing it to each other, then moving together and the collective effort was outstanding,” said Berhalter. “If you look at the scoresheet, our three attacking players get on the board and [Federico Higuain] probably had, in my eyes, one of his best games of the season without getting on the scoring line.”

UNBEATEN STREAK AT HOME D.C. United tied the Houston Dynamo, 1-1, on Apr. 11 to extend their home unbeaten streak to 15 matches in all competitions, including 11 straight in regular season play. United’s last loss at home came on June 28, 2014, a 1-0 defeat against Seattle. ROLFE WITH TWO IN TWO D.C. United midfielder Chris Rolfe has goals in back-to-back games, recording his first goal of the 2015 season with a spectacular free kick in the 36th minute of United’s 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Apr. 18. He also scored the game-winning goal in United’s 2-1 win at Vancouver on Apr. 26. Rolfe, who finished 2014 with six goals and six assists, also leads the team with two assists in 2015. He now has 56 career goals, tying him for eighth among active MLS players and 30th all-time. THE RETURN OF FABIÁN ESPÍNDOLA Argentine forward Fabián Espíndola made his first start of 2015 in United’s 2-1 win over Vancouver following a six-game suspension to start the season. He is coming off the most productive of his eight seasons in Major League Soccer. In 2014, he was tied for D.C. United’s team lead in scoring with a career-high 11 goals and led the squad with a career-high nine assists. He’s also one of only four MLS players with at least nine goals every year from 2011-14, a group that includes Landon Donovan, Thierry Henry and Chris Wondolowski. Espíndola has two goals in 2015 (outside of MLS play) against Alajuelense in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. ARRIETA FACES FORMER CLUB This game marks the first time that Jairo Arrieta will have the opportunity to take on Columbus Crew SC, where he had 17 goals and nine assists in 67 appearances over the last three seasons. Arrieta scored twice in eight games against D.C. United, in the Crew’s 3-0 win at RFK Stadium on Mar. 8, 2014, and in D.C. United’s 3-2 win at RFK on Oct. 20, 2012, a game in which United clinched its first playoff berth in five years. UNDEFEATED WHEN SCORING FIRST D.C. United improved its 2015 record to 3-0-2 when scoring first with the team’s 1-1 draw against Houston on Apr. 18. D.C. United was the only team in MLS that did not lose a game when scoring the first goal in 2014, finishing the regular season 16-0-1 (.971). In addition, the Black-and-Red went undefeated when leading at the half (14-0-1). FIRST WIN IN VANCOUVER D.C. United earned its first win against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place in four tries with its come-from-behind 2-1 victory on Apr. 25. It was also D.C. United’s first come-from-behind victory since June 11, 2014, when Montreal owned a 2-1 lead for two minutes in United’s 4-2 victory at Saputo Stadium. BOSWELL HOLDS STEADY AT CENTERBACK Defender Bobby Boswell, a 2014 MLS Best XI selection and 2014 MLS All-Star, made his 61st consecutive MLS regular season start in D.C. United’s 2-1 win at Vancouver on Apr. 25. His current streak is the second longest in Major League Soccer behind New York goalkeeper Luis Robles (78 consecutive starts). Boswell has started 41 straight games since his return to D.C. United in 2014. He is tied for 11th all-time in starts (295) and tied for 25th in games played (298). DYKSTRA RETURNS D.C. United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra made his first regular season start of 2015 against the Houston Dynamo on Apr. 18, replacing injured Bill Hamid, who missed the game with a thigh contusion. Dykstra finished with four saves. It was his first regular season start since June 11, 2014, in a 4-2 victory at Montreal, and his first regular season start since a season-ending Achilles injury suffered in an exhibition match against Fulham on July 26, 2014. After missing much of preseason, Dykstra started D.C. United’s 5-2 loss on the road at Costa Rican side Alajuelense in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals in February. Dykstra made four starts for D.C. United in 2014, going 3-0-1 with two shutouts. WORRA MAKES DCU DEBUT Undrafted rookie goalkeeper Travis Worra made his MLS debut in D.C. United’s 2-1 win at Vancouver, replacing an injured Andrew Dykstra in the 58th minute. Worra finished with one save and zero goals allowed. The former University of New Hampshire product has gone 2-0-1 with two shutouts and a penalty kick save on loan with the USL Richmond Kickers in 2015. ARNAUD BECOMES MOST FOULED PLAYER IN MLS HISTORY Midfielder Davy Arnaud became the most fouled player in MLS history in D.C. United’s 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Mar. 28. Finlay also ranks second in MLS in assists, with four ... since his first career helper on May 31, 2014, only four other players have more assists (Landon Donovan, Marcelo Sarvas, Pedro Morales, Dillon Powers).

CREW SC ATTACK LEADING LEAGUE ... Following the Black & Gold’s four-goal performance against Philadelphia, Crew SC now leads MLS in total goals, with 12 ... Columbus also ranks first in the League in goal differential (six) and assists (13) ... the Black & Gold have scored five of their 12 goals between minutes 46 and 60, leading the League in goal-scoring within that interval as well.

Kamara’s first MLS appearance came on April 1, 2006 for Columbus, where he scored a goal in his debut against Kansas City ... the forward has gone on to make 43 total appearances for Columbus, with 12 for San Jose, 32 for Houston and 113 for Kansas City in his career.

Kamara also is second in MLS in total shots (31) and shots on goal (14).
