Dear customers Mechanical Seals
core component in process industry
According to a study of the VDMA,
mechanical seals are regarded as “A”
components in the process industry and
guarantee of system availability as well as
people - and environmental protection.
CHETRA mechanical seals + systems
address these requirements - by building
products, achieving high service life (MTBR
- / MTBF factor), ensure optimal reliability in
conjunction with environmental protection.
As a medium-sized manufacturer, we can
offer our customers a flexible approach to
your requirements including the design of
customer-specific solutions. CHETRA
mechanical seals are always adjusted to the
aggregate - and not vice versa. In addition to
these high-tech mechanical seals we offer a
range of high-quality standard mechanical
seals of the latest series: 209D-Eco / 809D-
Eco (eco = ecology + economy). You get a
first impression of CHETRA and the
products in our current newsletter.
Suggestions and comments are very
welcome.
With best regards
Hans J. Rabl
Recent developments of mechanical seals and establishment of foreign CHETRA subsidiary companies are the keys to please our customers‘ needs.

ACHEMA 2015 ACHEMA 2015 was a special exhibition as always . Exchange of information with
our visitors about their needs for mechanical seals and mechanical seal systems,
conversations with customers, who themselves were exhibitors and we could take
a closer look at their latest products. A special highlight was the selection of our
stand as one of the booths with innovative products ("who supplies what"). A video
showing the selected CHETRA Loopsystem, a mechanical seal-utilities/ monitoring
unit.
A few photos convey an impression of the lively operating at ACHEMA 2015.
CHETRA APP
For a successful operation mechanical seals require certain methods how to be operated and/ or in addition certain supply systems. Mechanical Seals need to be cooled, lubricated, have to be pressurized, solid matter needs to be eliminated or minimized etc. For years the API Plans (API 682; API American Petroleum Institute) have proven to be a reliable information for this area. The most common and mostly used API Plans are available to you – free-of-charge- by the CHETRA APP – as on overview – and schematic drawing, including a short description of each plan.
Mechanical seals high-quality repairs
Mechanical seals are high-quality machine parts. They are "A" parts/
components for over 2/3 of all users in the fields of oil, gas, chemical, power
plants and paper according to a study of the VDMA. More than 20% of the
users evaluate the importance as "A/B" components. High-quality mechanical
seals as cartridge component, i.e. fully assembled with sleeve and cover it is
worth to fix it. The mechanical seal manufacturer CHETRA is committed to
the goal not easy to repair – "we want to understand why a seal has failed".
When a seal reaches a 'bad' time between failure, the specialists in the plant
go to see what can be improved. CHETRA Service Department gathers the
experiences at the plant operators and transfers it to the repair department.
So, specific expertise is continuously spreading.
A mechanical seal must be repaired, all items are cleaned of course. While
attention is paid to sensitive materials, because the items might be
refurbished once again.
O-rings, springs and screws are replaced every time. CHETRA has different
ways to test mechanical seals - statically or dynamically using an API-
leakage test bench. Each repaired mechanical seal is tested on the leakage
test. Each certified seal gets a leak log and all repairs are identified, so that
traceability is ensured.

CHETRA supports sport teams
Sportclubs rely on volunteers. A small
infant football team from North Rhine-
Westphalia has been successfully
developed by the support of their
coaches.
We promote the youth and team sports,
because we know how important it is to
take care of young athletes.
As additional sports facilities, CHETRA
has bought a tracksuit to the young
players.
Good luck!

CHETRA standard on the road to success
As producer of demanding "high end" mechanical seals we have profound
know-how, what matters in mechanical seals. This know-how inspires the
design of our standard cartridge mechanical seals:
• style 209D-Eco - single acting
• style 809D-Eco - double-acting
This mechanical seals are designed for packing conversions, retrofits,
standardization and universal stakes. Area of application: p (stuffing box): up
to 18 or 23 bar. Dimensions: 25-100 mm and imperial measurements. Both
mechanical seals are in stationary design and are independent of the
direction of rotation. The 809D-Eco is double balanced (i.e. operating as
tandem / non-pressurized buffer or with barrier; pressure API plan 52/53)
and has an integrated feed system. This series with the addition of <eco>
stands for ecology plus economy. Short delivery times and mechanical seals
on stock complete the picture.

We keep on track (CHETRA Style 500)
We were challenged by a big chemical company:
Within short time CHETRA had to develop a shaft-seal cartridge which was
to optimize the meantime between failure (MTBF).
The problem in this case: No documents regarding dimensions were
available, so CHETRA used a shutdown of production to take the important
dimensions. Concentration and precision were needed.
The MTBF of the former sealing device was 6 months at the maximum.
Therefore 2 repairs p.a. were needed – high repair-, shutdown costs and
production loss coming along.
Such projects often need an
additional time reduction; in
fact the reactor was leaking
much earlier than expected.
So we had to hurry up – the
reactor was repaired the next
day - including our new
designed seal.
Same day, late night we got
the phone call – everything
was working perfect.
A service which made our
costumer very happy.
CHETRATHENE
High-duty cleaner with better formula,
based on renewable raw materials.
• free of aromatic and hexane
substances
• no fragrances that can trigger
allergies according to
detergents-regulations
• minimization of risk of explosion
• posing the fewest hazards possible
• minimization of risk of fire and
explosion
Screw pumps
Challenge: Mechanical seal for screw-spindle pumps, narrow seal
installation space, large diameter, demanding pressures.
We were contacted by a well-known German pump-O.E.M with the following
sealing requirement for a single acting component mechanical seal: Shaft
size: 190 mm, media to be sealed: crude oil; n: 1350 rpm, pmax (dyn.) 35
bar, pmax (stat.) 75 bar.
Any modification of the relatively narrow seal installation space was not
possible; such it was also not possible to design a cartridge mechanical
seal. The Southamerican enduser required documented test-runs of the
mechanical seals with above stated max. values.
From the very beginning a close cooperation between pump-O.E.M and
CHETRA took place. This was very helpful, especially in regards to the
specific requirements for the dynamic seal test rig, since it has to handle
very sizeable forces when testing such a single mechanical seal within the
specified pressure range.

New CHETRA-back-up mechanical seal type 825TAG in
tandem arrangement
Known as "back-up" mechanical seals are enjoying increasing acceptance
in the industry. The product-side mechanical seal is a balanced liquid-
lubricated seal. With our new development 825TAG, the atmosphere-side
seal is equipped with a low spring-force applied on the stationary ring, as
well as with gas-grooves for N2 (nitrogen) buffergas. The mechanical seal is
also designed so that it lifts off "automatically" upon reaching the usual
speed of centrifugal pump. The 825TAG has connections for flush (11 or
13), GBI = gasbuffer inlet, CSV = back-up ventilation and CSD = back-up
drain.
The 'back-up' arrangement can run with leak drain to a reservoir. Relevant
API plans are: 72, 75, 76. The first 825TAG are running successfully in a
large German refinery. More CHETRA mechanical seals of the "back-up"
components are 828TAG, stationary arrangement of the product-side
mechanical seal, and 851TAD, dry-running, independent of rotating
direction. In addition we have gas-buffered mechanical seals: Type 370 G
and 877GS; for higher N2 barrier (API plan 74).
