Dear WInS Community,

Upper Secondary Excursion to KL

The 5 days 4 nights educational trip took place on 20th May until 24th May 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A total of 33 secondary students were accompanied by three teachers throughout the tour, namely Mr.

Bong, Mr. Albert and Dr. Lee.

Upon arrival, students visited the Petrosains Discovery Centre in KLCC. They got to experience the hands-

on exhibits and participated in exciting science shows where fun meets science for all ages.

The following day, the group took a journey to 817 hectares forest of Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam.

Students participated in “Skytrex adventure”, an educative eco-recreational activity that bring them closer

to the natural environment. Though the course is challenging but our students manage to overcome their

fear and reached the finishing line.

The next day students embarked on a historic journey into Malaysia in the National Museum. The galleries

present an exciting and innovative approach for the students to explore the history of Malaysia from

prehistoric times to the present. In the afternoon, the group visited the world-class aquarium in KLCC that

showcases animals and marine life from Malaysia and around the world. Students enjoyed the 90-metres

transparent tunnel with a moving walkway that took them past Sand Tiger sharks, giant stingrays, marine

turtles and shoals of other fishes.

After few days of learning about science, nature and history, it was time for students to have fun. Students

went to the adrenaline-pumping theme park in Sunway Lagoon. Some students even managed to meet

the infamous Malaysian radio DJ on Hitz.fm, Jinnyboy, who is filming with a few other renowned

Youtubers.

On the day before departure to Sibu, students stop by the Kidzania, an 80,000 sq. ft. kid-sized city with

more than 60 establishments. Students experienced real-life occupations like firefighters, pilots or even a

doctors through a fun and engaging hands-on learning environment.

Many thanks to all the Secondary staff who assisted in the organization and planning, and a special thank

you to Mr Bong, Mr Albert and Dr Lee for being surrogate parent for all our attending students.

University Guidance

Woodlands were delighted to receive a visit from Mr Tim Joseph from MPW Schools on Friday 16th June.

He came to debrief pupils on the processes involved in applying to further and higher educational

institutions in the UK. He offered tips on both university selection and developing their personal

statements for their application. I do hope it inspired some of our older students. Many thanks to Ms Loh

for facilitating the visit.

We will be having another information session next month for our Secondary students from the University

of Canterbury, England towards the end of July.

Piano Competition

On Saturday 17th June Woodlands played host to its first Piano competition. We had some 45 contestants

registering across three different age categories, not just from Sibu, but across Sarawak. Due to the large

amount of contestants the recitals were broken into two sessions – categories one and two in the

afternoon and category three in the evening.

The high level of performances meant that our international judges were kept very busy over the course

of the performances.

I am very grateful to our COO, Mr Charles for orchestrating the event, supported by selected teachers and

most especially our own very talented Music teacher Mr Thomas Ling.

Well done to all the contestants that played so wonderfully, including several Woodlands students.

Staff Development and Training

This term Vice Principal Peter and I will complete two more sessions with staff on differentiation. Many

thanks to Mr Charles for arranging whole staff training with Red Crescent to ensure we all know the

correct procedures to follow in case of accidents in and around the school compound. They will be running

two sessions for teachers and staff members.

Improving Communication between Home and School

The Senior Leadership Team have been looking at a variety of software that will improve communication

between home and school. We have identified a programme that we would like to trial with Years 7 and

8 parents. If successful, we will extend this throughout the school. Parents are invited to school for a

short demonstration at 2pm on Friday 28th July in our Common Room (L2). We look forward to seeing you

all.

Late Arrivals

I am delighted we have made inroads with parents of our Secondary division who have made a more

concerted effort ensuring their child is arriving to school on time. However I am aware that some of our

students in Primary and several in our Early Years division are failing to get to school in a timely fashion.

Late arrivals negatively impact on learning. Students arrive in a stressful state, the flow of the lesson is

curtailed by the unnecessary distraction, which, in turn will inevitably impact on all the students already

in the class. Please be respectful and thoughtful in this matter.

Health and Safety

Following several practice fire evacuations, on Thursday 22nd June WInS invited the Sibu fire brigade to

watch a demonstration to offer further advice. Following the evacuation the Chief firefighter gave

separate safety talks to Secondary, Primary and Early Years students on what to do in case of fire, and

how to successfully put out fire using fire extinguishers.

Ms Priscilla models appropriate use of fire extinguishers

Many thanks to our Head of Admin (Mr Desmond) for facilitating this and a huge thank you to all the fire

fighters for their interesting and informative demonstrations.

Early Years and Primary Students’ Health and Safety

Please be informed that the Early Years corridor will be closed off between 8am and 3.15pm to parents.

Should parents require access in case of emergencies, please check in with Ms Anne first in the School

Office. Please note that no parents should be in the building during school hours apart from the Lower

Ground floor. In case of emergencies, please go directly to Ms Anne who will help facilitate your request.

Student Crèche (Child Minding) Service

Please be reminded we are trialing after-school care facilities. We do have some available spaces left. Your

child/ren will have educational based activities prepared and enjoy ligh snacks and refreshments. You can

register your child with Ms Anne.

Fidget Spinners

From time-to-time new child - centred toys hit the market, and the latest fashion are spinners.

Fidget Spinners

Originally designed as a tool to assist students with Special Educational Needs (ADD, ADHD and autism)

they have become mainstream. Please be informed that the school would like to monitor their usage, and

therefore we request that students SHOULD NOT bring their own spinners into school. Each Primary

teacher will have their own bank of spinners to share with the students when appropriate.

领队老师是 Mr. Bong, Mr. Albert and Dr. Lee 。

Page 9: Dear WInS Community, - Woodlands · 2017-07-24 · The following day, the group took a journey to 817 hectares forest of Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam. Students participated in “Skytrex

Mr Tim

Joseph。

Ms Loh

Page 11: Dear WInS Community, - Woodlands · 2017-07-24 · The following day, the group took a journey to 817 hectares forest of Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam. Students participated in “Skytrex

Ms Anne .
