Abstract

As CIOs, IT managers, system administrators and business stakeholders it’s our goal to make sure technical infrastructure is not an impediment to team collaboration across our organizations. Just a few years ago industry analysts were convinced Cloud only collaborative systems would provide the solution to this SharePoint infrastructure dilemma. However, today reality is full of “hybrid” environments: cross version SharePoint (2007/2010/2013), geographically distributed on-premises Environments, and Cloud to On-Premises connected systems.

In this session we take a look at several hybrid SharePoint infrastructure scenarios that have allowed organizations to fully integrate their technology investments and human capital.

We will explore:

• Distributing and Synchronizing Collaborative content between Cloud (O365, DropBox, Salesforce, etc. ) and on-premises systems (SharePoint)

• Building multiple and geographically dispersed on-premises environments to increase adoption

• Overcoming barriers to managing multiple SharePoint Farms

• Understanding the impact of networking connectivity on Collaboration

Enough about us… What about you?

POLL

What Hybrid are you interested in?

• Cross version SharePoint (2007/2010/2013)

• Geographically distributed on-premises Environment

• SharePoint Online to SharePoint On-Premises

• Cloud to On-Premises

What Users Want

Access to documents and content - regardless of technical issues• "If I can't get to my documents, I'll just use a different method for my workflow..."

Availability to documents• "You promised me 99.999% uptime and availability for all of my information - this is a Mission Critical operation

and I need them all the time..."

Ownership of information• "Thanks for letting me manage the permissions to my files, it helps to ensure that I control who has access...

wait , what do you mean I can't change who has access?"

Ease of Use• "Why does my information not synchronize and show up between the different portals and apps?"

8

Our Goals as Stakeholders

Keeping all users engaged and active (no matter where they are or how they connect)

Providing the best possible speed and access to content even through disruptions

Keep confidential information shared with partners/agencies in approved environments (and safe)

Keep information authoritative across all systems

14

What about you?

POLL

What challenge are you most concerned about?

• Low Bandwidth / High Latency

• Geographically distributed Environments

• Disaster Recovery of All Content

• Integrity and Security of Data

• Continuity of Operations (COOP) of some selective content

15

• Service Level Agreement (SLA)

• Identity

• Authentication

• Authorization and Permissions Management

• Security and Compliance

• Cloud Connectivity Options (Network Bandwidth, Public Network versus Private Network)

Considerations

16

• 3rd party tools required

• Not everything equal

− Capabilities that are retired

− New App Model

• Classic vs. Claims

• Look & Feel/ User experience differences

• Managing distributed farms

• OneDrive for Business and Windows Explorer Views

Considerations

Cross version SharePoint (2007/2010/2013)

17

• Network topology, Latency & Challenged networks (WAN)

• Keeping information up to date -Authoritative information

• Compliance / Risk

− PII regulations

• If using satellites - $

• Data Collisions/ Health of Infrastructure -performed by different teams in different locations

Considerations

Geographically distributed

18

• Throttling of Transactions

− Office 365/ Azure / AWS

• Network bandwidth requirement planning-http://aka.ms/tune

• Availability of APIs / limitations of what content can be accessed

• Authentication / SSO / ADFS / Azure AD

• Backup Services

• Actual Cost – Beyond just storage and processing

Considerations

Cloud to

- On-Premises

- Cloud

19

What to do

Prioritize Content

− What type of Hybrid are you building?

− Move e-mail first

Identify the initial effort to move content

− Migration of content

− Synchronization of content

Perform the Business Cost Analysis

− Describe the risk of NOT utilizing Hybrid

− How will the Infrastructure be managed?
