Many hours, days and months went into the planning of this event but I couldn’t have made it happen without the following people: The Area F Council, The CASL State Board, Tyler Durman, Jostens, Herf Jones, Pegleg Entertainment, Inflatable Adventures, all the amazing speakers and finally The Disneyland Hotel and Resort. I have already booked the high school conference for next year, November 24, 2014…so mark your calendars. The Annual CADA State Convention in Reno, Nevada is now our focus. The Area F Council will be meeting at the end of this month (Jan 27th) to finish off our convention plans. The meeting will focus on the Bob Burton Award winner, the Area F Booth, Area F giveaways, etc. Our theme this year is “Bugs Bunny & Looney Tunes!” Hope to see you all in Reno! Blood Drives! They work =)I have been asked to share my story. It is a hard story to tell. Four years ago I was told I was pregnant with twins, this after I had my tubes tied. Needless to say there

were “complications”. On November 9th, 2009 I was having a lovely dinner at my in-laws home as a family dinner when suddenly I felt hot, pain and

starting to become ill. After a few hours of not getting better I had to call an ambulance.

Arriving at the hospital I had to sign a consent form for blood. I was unsure why at first. The surgeons told me that I had lost over 4.5 liters of blood and needed to quickly replenish my body or not only would I lose my baby, but my life as well.

I took over 15 pints of red bags and 3 white bags of blood. I thanks daily the people who donate blood, because of them, I have a life to share with my family.

Thank you, Amy Leigh Vollmar

TOWN HALL MEETING

You're Invited to....This year we wanted to try something new and I got the idea from a post on the CADA Facebook page. During the second week of November (right after the end of our first grading quarter), we held an ASB Town Hall Luncheon. We sent out 40 invitations to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students inviting them to a lunch hosted by ASB officers. Invitees were told that the purpose of the

luncheon was to get their feedback on current and past ASB activities and give input on types of activities and spirit days they would like to see coming up. Each ASB officer along with an ASB representative hosted a table. Students were grouped by grade level and were asked questions specific to their grade-level, the ASB officers developed the questions a few weeks prior to the luncheon. A few days prior to our luncheon, we made place cards for each invitee and came up with the seating arrangement. I called

Subway and ordered turkey sandwiches, using chips and sodas left over from the October dance and we were ready. The luncheon was a big hit and the officers and representatives took careful notes and brought back the students’ feedback and ideas to our next ASB class. We are looking forward a great second quarter and another ASB Town Hall Luncheon in February and again in May! I think we may have begun a new tradition!

Leadership Challenge

From Ken NeddlerFormer UCLA football coach, Pepper Rodgers once said, “coaches donʼt build character, we just cut those who donʼt have it”. What is it like when you select your new ASB each year. Myself, like many others, had a system that weeded out the weak links and left me with only the elite student. But what of the others? Can they not become leaders, given an opportunity? And of those we keep, are we teaching leadership, or do they already posses it, making our job easy. Last year at CADA, Dr. Alan Nelson of KidLead shared that in any given group, 10-20% are your true leaders, no matter the size of the group. I found that number to be both interesting and challenging. If that number holds true, and I did some math for this one, then I should have at least 285 student leaders on my campus. How do we identify them all? Better still, how do we reach out to them and make a difference in their lives, and perhaps the lives of every student on campus. I am currently experimenting on this project. Itʼs a challenge, and I will share my progress at CADA this year. For those of you taking the time to read this far, I offer you the challenge presented me: reflect on what you do, and can you build leadership capacity in more than just a select few? I hope to see you in Reno.

Generation iY Book review written by Rachel Blom. Generation Y, also called the Millennials, are the young people born between 1984 and 2002. The youngest group of these, those born after 1990, are what author Tim Elmore calls Generation iY: the generation defined by technology (‘i’) and for whom life is pretty much about ‘I’.

His book Generation iY: Our Last Chance to Save Their Future is aptly titled, for the whole book is a somber picture of what the future of this generation looks like if we (parents, teachers, youth leaders, etc) don’t act. It’s the strength of the book, for Elmore bases his conclusions on plenty of hard facts, data and reports. It contains valuable insights into the minds of the Millennials.

There is tons of extremely helpful and challenging information in this book. Here are some interesting facts for instance:

• Generation iY will be the largest in earth’s history, already nearly half the world’s population is under 25 years old

• It’s demonstrably the most narcissistic generation, yet also the most social

• It’s a generation that is technologically savvy, yet reading comprehension is declining, as is general vocabulary

• As far as emotional maturity goes, generation iY lags behind previous generations. A significant percentage is what Elmore calls ‘emotionally backward’. Their Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is generally speaking low.

• Boys are especially lagging, less and less are going to college (boys are a minority in college now and the percentage is still dropping) and one third of men aged 22-34 are still living at home with their parents

There’s much, much more in this book that you need to read. It’s not just the data that’s interesting, the analysis and the predictions are challenging as well. How about the fact that history shows that when young people are in the majority, unrest and violence are the result? After reading this book, I much better understand where this

generation is coming from, what caused them to be who they are and to behave like they do.

Elmore shares a lot of practical tools we can use as youth leaders to help this generation of young people find their way in life and in society. He suggests topics for talks, approaches for mentoring programs, questions to ask and methods to use in teaching. His conviction is that we must instill in them the habits and the attitudes they will need to become effective leaders.

A challenging goal, for sure, but one that’s well worth the effort. This book offers plenty of suggestions for us as leadership teachers to do that. Read it and apply!
